2012-2013 DESK REFERENCE
A SUPPLEMENT TO VACATION AGENT & AGENT @ HOME MAGAZINES
In Af f iliation with Magic of Mexico
W
hen I think of travel to Cancún I think of my family. A big Irish
family that includes aunts, uncles, kids, cousins and even those
people who simply want to be Irish. That’s the makeup of the
group I’ve been traveling with for the past four years. For each of those years
we’ve chosen Cancún for our family vacation.
The Christmas Holiday planning starts early when the people around you
know that you are the travel guy. Indeed, I’ve already been pestered for
months about the 2012 trip even though it was almost a year away when the
questions and calls started to come in.
The first question everyone wants to know is whether we will be back in
Cancún for this year’s trip. The answer is a resounding yes.

For the past four years I’ve ignored all of the television coverage that tries to
paint a negative picture of travel to México and remembered one key fact:
travel to Cancún is both rewarding and safe. It’s why I bring my own young
children and invite their many cousins along for the trip as well. We create
lasting memories that only travel and the experiences they bring you can
deliver.

Multi-generational travel is a great opportunity for travel agents in today’s
market full of Baby Boomers. Cancún and nearby Puerto Morelos present a
diverse destination with a range of accommodation choices that can meet
virtually any travel budget, and activities that span from Mayan cultural
encounters to swimming with whale sharks. This wide range of activities
means that you’ll be able to meet the needs and desires of the most
adventurous down to the most lethargic... Aunt Betty sitting on the beach
sipping a Margarita!
A Destination Waiting to Be Discovered
P
uerto Morelos is only a short 25-minute drive
from Cancún’s international airport and Hotel
Zone; it is one of the oldest ports in Quintana
Roo, the departure point when traveling to the “Cenotes”
Route or the eco-archaeological parks, and a good place
to start when leaving on tours to the Mayan World.
Set in a rustic atmosphere, but with the same quality
as Cancún, Puerto Morelos offers a wide selection of
cuisine where the highlight is the catch of the day. It
also offers everything from boutique hotels to large
international chains.
Snorkeling and scuba diving are two of the main
experiences offered by Puerto Morelos, thanks to the
great Mayan Reef, which is located only 1,640 feet from
its calm beaches.
The most recommended spots for scuba diving are:
“Cuevones”, “La Pared”, “La Bocana”, “El Túnel”, “Los
Jardines” and the Mexican naval ship, the C-56 Juan
Escutia.
While visiting Cancún, take one day excursion to any of it's
f ive added values that will make your client's holiday once in a
life time experience!
Cultural activities and music festivals are held in the
main square, such as the “International Seafront Theatre
Festival” in April and the “International Deep Sea Fishing
Tournament” at the end of May, along with other popular
national and religious celebrations.
Puerto Morelos also has other attractions such as the
Botanical Garden and the “Crococún” zoo, where the
region’s flora and fauna, such as crocodiles and orchids,
can be observed.
For adventure lovers, Puerto Morelos is the departure
point for tours in the jungle, either walking or by bicycle,
on horseback, ATVs or zip-lines. An ideal place for families
to enjoy these activities is Selvática, where there is also
swimming in cenotes and snorkeling; the perfect balance
between emotion, hospitality and fun.
Getting Here: A 22 km drive from Cancún international
airport.
A key factor in our choice each year is also the ability to access the destination
quickly and easily. The airlines have a number of nonstop options into Cancún
from a variety of cities across the United States, making the destination easily
accessible to a large portion of the country.

Cancún & the Treasures of The Caribbean
These are just some of the reasons why I’m excited to share our 2012 Cancún
Desk Reference, your tool for building sales to this wonderful destination. I
hope you’ll plan on sending many of your clients to Cancún so they can
experience what my family has experienced for years. And if you send them
over the holidays I might even get a chance to run into them – on the beach
of course!

cancun
You might think you know Cancún -- 14 miles of pristine white
beaches shaped like a number “7,” crystalline waters, and sultry
nights sipping on the perfect margarita, right? – Right. And wrong.
If this is the extent of what you are selling your clients, oh are you
ever missing Cancún!
ecological tours, golf and spa packages, longer stays, and (most
important) repeat visits. Cancún offers so many things to see and
do that visitors often have trouble deciding where to spend their
leisure time.
This is where you come in. While clients can easily arrange their
tours upon arrival, why not map out some options before they
arrive? Once you’re familiar with Cancún’s variety of things to do
(by using this Desk Reference) it’s really as easy as UNO, DOS,
TRES!
As we will illustrate in this Desk Reference, Cancún is a gift to the
travel agent. It is a safe, beautiful locale, with an abundance of
quality accommodations and enough activities to keep your clients
busy and enthused. And each time they visit this Caribbean island
paradise it gets event better!
UNO: Qualify your clients by determining their special interests
and what has been memorable about their previous “beach
vacation” experiences.
With extensive renovation of infrastructure, resorts, beaches, and
attractions, Cancún continues to be a destination with something
for everyone -- home to Mayan archaeological wonders, turquoise
seas, a bountiful underwater world (and our new sculpture
gardens), sea turtle rescue programs, and world-class vacation
amenities. Cancún offers a complete vacation experience unequaled
by anywhere else in Mexico or the Caribbean.
DOS: Map out a simple day-by-day outline, using this Desk
Reference and its extensive directories.
TRES: Close the sale via your existing tour operator partners
(whenever possible), or by contacting our local excursion and
attraction operators (described in this Desk Reference). It’s easier
than you think, thanks to email communications, toll-free numbers
and electronic vouchers. And don’t forget the commissions! Just
look for the “C” hat symbol for special commission offers.
Resting on the northeast corner of the Yucatán Peninsula in the
state of Quintana Roo (keen-tah-nah-ROW), Cancún was a part of
the ancient Mayan civilization and is still considered the gateway
to the Mayan World (“El Mundo Maya”). Mayan temples and ritual
sites are literally everywhere, some smothered by lush jungle,
others easily accessible (one pops up at one of our golf courses).
There is even a Mayan temple overlooking the Caribbean Sea in
the heart of the Cancún Hotel Zone!

Cancún is extremely easy for visitors to navigate. The bus system is reliable and inexpensive (one ride

Taxis in Cancún are regulated, safe and reliable. There are over 3,000 taxis in operation. Make sure your
clients know it is a good practice to ask the doorman at the hotel what the rate should be from one point to
another, so there are no surprises when it comes time to pay (most hotels post a list of rates from the hotel
to various points in and around Cancún). Taxi fares within the Hotel Zone can run anywhere from 100-200
pesos ($10 to $18 US) depending on the distance traveled. TIP: take the bus, learn some Spanish, practice
your Mayan and save your pesos for shopping!

BY CAR
If your clients prefer to experience a new place by cruising its highways and byways, a rental car may be the
way to go. Most of the world’s major rental car companies have Cancún offices, and rent the newest vehicle
models. If your clients are planning to stay within Cancún (the Hotel Zone or downtown area), the bus
system will satisfy their needs. If you have booked them on a day tour, comfortable, air-conditioned vehicles
will be provided by their tour company. Otherwise, renting a car is an attractive alternative for those wanting
more vehicles. TIP: some car rental agencies give drivers a ‘get out of a ticket free’ card! If you’re pulled over
for minor infractions, the card is shown to police who will ‘forgive’ your first two infractions! Really!

Cancun
Finding the ideal Mexican
Caribbean Options
You commonly encounter clients who
are undecided about which destination
is best suited to their needs. There are
also clients who have set opinions and
have done extensive research before
consulting you. Cancún’s phenomenal
popularity (over 3.3 million annual visitors)
has created an interesting challenge:
while Cancún enjoys very high top-ofmind recognition, the destination also
falls victim to stereotyped or out-dated
impressions about what it REALLY offers.
Use this Desk Reference to dispel
misconception, and instill your clients
with a realistic view. With repeat business
a “cornerstone” of your success, crafting
the ideal, customized vacation is an
essential part of your job.
Let’s take a look at some of Cancún’s key
audience groups:
Beach Lovers: Combining turquoise
water and talcum-powder-white sand,
Cancún’s magnificently restored beaches
are among the world's finest. With
Cancún’s four distinct water areas (Bay,
Lagoon, Caribbean, Puerto Morelos),
there’s an ideal setting for each of your
unique clients. Note: A $72 million beach
restoration project is now complete. TIP:
beaches along the northern coast of Isla
Cancún (Bahía de Mujeres) are calm,
shallow and ideal for families.
Caribbean Lovers: Cancún delivers
the best of both worlds: the Caribbean
AND Mexico. For clients who frequent
other Caribbean destinations, Cancún
offers an unequalled mix of man-made,
natural, and cultural attractions. TIP:
Puerto Morelos and its boutique hotels
are reminiscent of secluded Caribbean
island getaways.
Cuisine Lovers: Cancún is without
rival in the Caribbean when it comes
to dining variety. Over 200 restaurants
(many with elegant and beautiful décor)
feature cuisine from around the world,
plus delicious nouvelle and traditional
Mexican cooking. Hotel dining is superb,
while our unique regional cuisines
showcase our Yucatecan and Mayan
Customers
roots. TIP: Cancún City has some finedining options featuring Mayan and
international cuisine – and at quite
reasonable prices. Puerto Morelos has a
popular cooking school).
Couples and Honeymooners: A
romantic, warm and exotic setting awaits
the thousands of couples who visit
us each year. From fun outings, to fine
shopping, to superb dining and nightlife,
Cancún is ideal for both seclusion seekers
and activity-oriented couples. TIP: how
about sunsets and fine wine to end the
day? Head to La Europea (a gourmet
and wine shop next to La Isla Shopping
Center) and their lagoon-facing patio.
Pop open a nice Malbec, order a cheese
plate and reeeeeelax.
Eco-Adventure Enthusiasts: Nature
lovers will experience our region’s unique
islands, estuaries, biosphere reserves,
forests, caves, and “cenote” (sinkhole)
ecosystems. Our dive sites are among
the Caribbean’s best, while birdwatching areas, turtle sanctuaries, and
exotic animal zoos (Crococun, Xcaret)
showcase our other natural wonders.
TIP: all our eco-adventure parks can be
visited on your own by renting a car (or
jeep) and heading to these parks at offpeak hours. Rise early and catch sunrise
at Tulum, then work your way north
stopping at two or three parks.
Families: Like other México
destinations, Cancún LOVES children and
families. Getting around is a snap (thanks
to our bus system), kids are welcome
everywhere, hotel children’s programs are
easy to find, and our resorts are safe at
all hours. Imagine your clients swimming
with dolphins in the morning, climbing
Mayan pyramids in the afternoon, and
enjoying a dinner at Bubba Gump’s. It’s
all here!
Golfers: Cancún is on the verge of
becoming México’s new golf leader,
with five courses in Cancún and eight
additional signature golf courses south
of Cancún. TIP: look for ‘twilight’ rates
(usually after 2:00p.m., or inquire if your
hotel has special rates for area courses.
Groups: Corporate meetings are our
specialty. Our hotel partners have the
Caribbean’s most extensive meeting

space. Our professionally staffed Cancún
Center offers over 70,900 square feet of
space. Over a dozen professional DMCs
are ready to handle the minutest details
to ensure a successful event (big or
small).
History Buffs: Remains from this
hemisphere’s most advanced society
surround visitors: the Mayas. In
addition there are nearby colonial cities,
including Valladolid, a 'Pueblo Mágico'
not far from Cancún, as well as 18thcentury haciendas, ex-convents, and
fine museums. Cancún is a top choice
for those looking to explore Mexico’s
enthralling past. TIP: head west to
Valladolid, founded in the 16th century,
then from here head north some 30 kms
to incredible Ek-Balam.
Incentives: Just the mention of
Cancún can inspire incentive travelers
and organizers like no other destination.
Our over 140 hotels and resorts, dozens
of novel and unique outings, and special
blend of the best of Mexico and the
Caribbean make us an incentive leader.
equipment, tours, and training courses. On
land, you’ll find state-of-the-art workout
facilities, “extreme-challenge” adventure
outings, biking and jogging, and worldclass golf and tennis.
Seniors: Affordable lodging, AAA
discounts, handicap facilities, a wide range
of cuisine choices, loads of activities, and
opportunities to interact with local culture
await senior travelers. Should the need
arise, our medical facilities are first-rate,
including American and Spanish hospitals.
Shoppers: From designer boutiques
to open-air craft markets, Cancún has
something for every type of shopper.
A dozen modern shopping malls await
visitors, and competitive prices (thanks to
a strong U.S. dollar) allow you to shop for
bargains and come home with treasures.
Weddings: Cancún and Puerto
Morelos host over 4,500 weddings each
year. You’ll find unique wedding venues,
professional wedding coordinators, and
plenty of activities to keep wedding guests
entertained.

When touring, your clients will be on the most modern airconditioned motor coaches. Guides are experienced and can
speak a variety of languages. Cancún’s modern road network
makes car rental an attractive option for day outings. As your
clients move around, they’ll find that attractions are well managed,
easily accessed and geared toward creating lasting memories.
Remember, it’s easy to set up these outings in advance for your
clients – saving them time while earning your agency additional
revenue!
CHICHÉN ITZÁ is one of the largest and most fascinating
sites in Mexico. It is actually two cities: one that was ruled by
the Maya during the 6th to the 10th century; the other a ToltecMayan city that emerged around the year 1000 A.D. Tell clients
this is not to be missed, and plan to spend at least an entire day
here.
KOHUNLICH is located about 65 km west of Chetumal on
Hwy 186. The road approaches the site from the north and leads
into an enormous central plaza ringed by pyramids and temple
platforms. Settled in 200 B.C., it contains almost 200 mounds
that remain largely unexcavated. The site is best known for its
Temple of the Masks, an Early Classic pyramid whose central
stairway is flanked by huge humanized stucco masks. Most
travelers who currently visit the site arrive on cruise ships stopping
in Mahahual/ Costa Maya. There is one hotel near the site, the
Explorean Kohunlich operated by Fiesta Americana Hotels.
You can do this by booking through your favorite tour operator,

COBÁ (43 km inland from Tulúm; 2.5 hours south of the
Cancún Airport) Cobá is becoming a popular attraction for visitors
wanting the feeling of “discovering” an important Mayan site still
shrouded by thick jungle. In fact, only 5 percent of the site has
been excavated. This once great city is now being extensively
studied for the first time. Built between two lakes during the
Classic Period (300-900 A.D.), Cobá was at one time a very large
city with nearly 50,000 inhabitants and extended over 80 square
km. The main pyramid, Nohuch Mul (large hill), is 42 meters
tall (138 feet) and is the tallest in the Yucatán Peninsula. The
pyramid known as the “Iglesia” (Church), is the second highest.
Much of the site is still unearthed, giving visitors an “Indiana
Jones” type experience.
Part of the excitement of a visit to Cancún is its accessibility to
a world gone by. Remains of the ancient Maya civilization are
scattered throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. Some, like the temple
at the Westin Lagunamar are right in Cancún. Others, like Chichén
Itzá and Ek-Balam are in the neighboring state of Yucatan, just a
couple hours’ drive from the Hotel Zone. All hold the secrets of a
fascinating culture, known the world over for its illustrious
achievements in art, architecture and science.

Kantunilkín
MUYIL was one of the earliest and longest-inhabited ancient
Mayan sites on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is
located approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) south of of Tulúm and is
located within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Sian Ka’an
Biosphere Reserve. Tours to Muyil include walks along a lush trail
in the Maya forest to the Chunyaxché lagoon, a boat ride and the
opportunity to float in pristine, turquoise waters through paths
carved by the Maya thousands of years ago. Tours operated
by Community Tours Sian Ka’an allow you to use Maya guides
who live in the reserve and are the ancestors of the Maya who
first inhabited this costal area. For more information visit www.
siankaantours.org/.
The largest archaeological site in Cancún is El Rey, located
within walking distance from the Iberostar (formerly Hilton)
Cancún (Blvd. Kukulcán, km. 19). El Rey, known to some as
the playground of the ancient Mayans, had its peak during the
post-Classic period (1250-1630 A.D. ). The site includes plazas
outlined by buildings and platforms that are connected by a 220yard path. It is named after a skeleton that was found on the site,
thought to be that of a king (el rey is Spanish for “the king”).
El Rey is open to tourists from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Entrance
fee is $50 pesos. Next to the Westin Lagunamar, on the highest
point in mostly flat Cancún, lies Yamil Lu’um. The site consists
of two small temples that were likely used as watchtowers and
lighthouses between 500 and 700 years ago.

TULUM (117 km or 90-minutes south of Cancún Airport)
The legendary Mayan site of Tulum (Mayan for “walled city”)
is one of the loveliest archaeological treasures in México. It is
the only Mayan port city ever discovered, and one of the few to
still be occupied when the Spaniards arrived in the 16th century.
Overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea, Tulum is a gleaming
white-walled city that invites visitors to roam its small temples
and buildings. The site exhibits strong Toltec-Mayan influences.
More than 60 well-preserved structures can be observed within
three massive walls that surround the site. An evening light and
sound show is now an added attraction.
EK’ BALAM is located 51 km northeast of Chichén Itzá
and 30 km north of Valladolid, a beautiful Spanish colonial town
that should be combined with any visit to this amazing Maya
archaeological site. Ek’ Balam was at its height from A.D. 770
to 840, contains 45 structures and provides a rich resource of
information for understanding northern Classic cities.

Maya cuisine, this area is an attractive alternative.
The list of specialties is infinite: from Mexican fare with all its
regional varieties to the most refined international cuisine.
There are authentic, innovative, elegant and casual restaurants.
By experimenting with new techniques, using new ingredients
and fusing culinary styles, the chefs achieve dishes that are
a delight for all the senses. It is no surprise that many of the
destination’s restaurants are listed among the best in specialized
travel magazines and receive awards from the Michelin guide and
AAA, among other important associations.
Some eighty of our over 200 restaurants are considered “tourist
class” establishments and offer such amenities as live music,
kid’s play areas, highchairs, handicapped facilities, on-site parking
and even Braille menus.
The H Award and Crystal Certificate, among others, are a clear
example of the high standards of quality and hygiene offered by
Cancún's restaurants.
Cancún’s dining scene may factor into whether your clients
choose an EP or an all-inclusive (AI)resort. You’ll also find plenty
of dining variety at our more than 60 AI properties, ranging from
Mexican, to Italian, to Asian to steaks.
Excellence is always a common denominator in the destination’s
culinary experience. The beautiful settings are part of the
enjoyment of a stay here: a thatched roof “palapa” by the sea or
views of sunsets on the beautiful lagoon, both accompanied by
the sound of violins, pianos, saxophones, mariachis and jaraneros.
However, for those who want to fully savor Cancún’s dining scene,
the EP or MAP option may be more attractive. This allows for new
dining experiences throughout the day, and should your clients
be away from their resort (on one of our popular day tours), they
won’t be paying for food and beverage that’s not being consumed.
The fun continues with the nightlife for which Cancún is famous:
discotheques, bars and first-class shows, accompanied by different
styles and trends in live music played every night, are open seven
days a week.
A middle-of-the-road option could be to suggest your clients take
a “meal plan” at their EP hotel. This can provide meal coverage
and affordability, while at the same time allowing your clients
to dine out during a portion of their stay. Commissionable “meal
plans” are currently offered at dozens of our EP resorts.

C
ancún boasts one of the most
enticing, challenging and scenic
golf offerings in the Americas.
Course designers include Jack Nicklaus,
Greg Norman, P.B. Dye, Robert Trent
Jones II, Nick Price, Tom Fazio, Tom
Weiskopf and Robert von Hagge.
Quintana Roo State has attracted
the attention of the PGA Tour. The
Mayakobá Golf Classic (held each
February) is the only PGA-sanctioned
tournament played outside the US or
Canada. Meanwhile, our newest course
for 2012 is the Cancún Country Club.
With 18 holes, TPC was designed by
Nick Price, with another planned course
to be designed by Tom Fazio. Both
courses have been and will continue
to be developed to the standards of
the PGA Tour's TPC Network, bringing
added prestige and notoriety to the
region.
As of 2012 there are 15 operating
courses in the greater Cancún area.
Cancún guests can easily access four
courses within the Cancún hotel zone.
Just north of the hotel zone is the
Playa Mujeres course, while just south
of the airport are the Moon Palace and
Cancún Country Club (see adjacent
map for locations). Guests choosing
to stay in Puerto Morelos have an
assortment of local links (located to
the south), plus, of course, the Cancún
hotel zone courses.
Courses are full-service venues, each
with a professional pro shop, wellmaintained golf carts, driving range,
putting green, Bermuda fairways and
greens, caddies, top quality equipment
rentals, restaurants, and beverage
cart. All of our courses are open to
the public (some require advance
arrangements for access). Some offer
lower rates for guests of certain hotels,
while others have special “twilight”
rates for play after 2:00 p.m. In some
cases the green fee will be all-inclusive,
with snacks and beverages.

Treasures of the Caribbean
Island of Sea and Fun
T
his 8-km-long (5 miles) by one-half-kmwide (.3 miles) wisp of an island sits just 6
km off the coast to the northeast of Cancún.
For those wanting a break from the glitz of Cancún,
Isla Mujeres is a refreshing throwback to the days
before Cancún even existed. The pace is relaxed
and unpretentious, and the setting is pure magic.
Plan on a full day to tour and enjoy the island.
The tourist ferry dock near the Island’s northern
tip is where visitors disembark to enter the island’s
main settlement (measuring a mere four blocks by
six blocks). The town is home to simple shops, a
few restaurants, some funky bars, an occasional
brightly painted clapboard house, and the Plaza
Municipal. Mopeds, golf carts, bicycles and taxis
can be easily rented upon arrival.
The island (population 15,000) seems to defy
change, even though its swanky neighbor (Cancún)
has spurred the development of some visitor
attractions that have spruced up the island’s very
“bohemian” ambiance. In 2008 a number of new
hotels opened (Isla Mujeres Palace, Casa Sirena).
South of town the island’s only road skirts the
western coast past mangrove lagoons, an air strip,
stunning beaches and relaxed seaside restaurants
before looping northbound. The trip to the island’s
southern tip takes about 20 minutes. The island’s
eastern shore is rugged, rocky, and mostly
undeveloped.
Most of Isla’s residents live from diving and fishing.
They make very hospitable hosts for both daytrippers and overnight guests.
Getting Here: By ferry, three locations in the Hotel
Zone or Puerto Juárez, a travel time of 15 to 20
minutes.
A Seductive Combination of Charm and Nature
T
his little-known barrier island rests off the
Yucatán’s northern coast. It is about three
times larger than Isla Mujeres. Holbox(holeBowsh is similar to Isla Mujeres of 25 years ago.
The water is clear and shallow several hundred yards
offshore, ideal for wading and collecting the abundant
seashells. Holbox days can be spent snorkeling,
fishing, and eating fresh lobster and seafood at small
beachfront palapa-roofed restaurants. From August
to September, the beaches are the spawning ground
of green sea turtles. Of special note is the area’s
unique whale shark population, viewable up close
during summer months. Local fishermen will take
people out to fish or snorkel, to see the flamingo
nesting grounds at the Ría Lagartos Nature Reserve,
or take them east around Cabo Catoche to a rarely
visited Mayan ruin at Ecab. Visitors can reach Holbox
via the Cancún-Mérida toll way. Next they travel
north on the road to the village of Chiquillá, then by
20-minute ferry or boat ride. Boats depart daily, and
the auto ferry is daily as well. The tour operators
Alltournative and Eco Colors can arrange escorted
tours.
Getting Here: From Cancún, take the road to
Chiquilá (approx. 2 hours). Boat departures start at
5 am.

study the ecosystem of the island. It also supports
supervised eco-tourism and regulated commercial
fishing. Only a few tour companies have permission
to bring guests to the island and only 200 visitors
are allowed daily. These tours sail from Isla Mujeres
or Cancún. Depending on the weather and the type
of boat, the trip should take one to two hours. If
you plan to visit the island in your own vessel, you
are required to apply for permission first, which can
be arranged at the park offices in Isla Mujeres or
Cancún. For more information on tours, see http://

Caribbean. Declared a National Wildlife Reserve
in 1961, this island is situated just 41 km/25 mi
north of Cancún, 30 kms north of Isla Mujeres,
and it's just 8.5 kms (about 5 miles) long. Only a
few tour operators are authorized to take tourists
for daytime visits. Besides its unparalleled beauty,
secluded sandy white beaches and lush palm
trees, the island boasts more than a hundred and
fifty migrating and resident bird species. The most
numerous and easy to observe are the frigate, the
brown pelican and the double-crested cormorant.
The island is also host to a group of governmentsponsored biologists who continually monitor and

For non-divers, the island has something for
everyone (in fact, only 30 percent of visitors are
divers). Sightseeing includes archaeological sites,
eco-adventure parks, beach clubs, a deserted eastern
shore, museums, and the pleasant city of San Miguel
(pop. 80,000). The town is an eclectic mix of cafés,
restaurants, and boutiques. The charms of island life
are infused with a pronounced contemporary Mayan
culture.
ozumel, the largest island in the Mexican
Caribbean, is located just off Playa del Carmen
south of Cancún. The island measures 48
kms/30 miles long and 16 kms/10 miles wide and
sits just 19 kms from Playa del Carmen on Mexico’s
mainland. A 3,000-foot-deep channel separates the
two. The area’s diving and snorkeling are legendary.
Following a 1959 visit and 1961 documentary by
Jacques Cousteau, Cozumel earned a worldwide
following of divers who ranked it one of the top five
scuba diving and snorkeling sites on the planet. The
island’s surrounding sea is teeming with undersea
life, colorful reefs, and the slumbering hulls of Spanish
galleons.
Getting Here: By air to CZM International Airport,
or from Cancún, México City, many U.S. and Canadian
cities, or via ferry from Playa del Carmen.
