FAMOUS LAST WORDS “Dear Woman, Here Is Your Son…” March 20-21, 2010 Pastor Tom Stroup “ When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. "Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, "They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing." (See Psalms 22:18) So this is what the soldiers did. Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," 27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” John 19:25-27 Mary…a mother with a broken heart. Mary “treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” (Luke 2:19) “And a sword will pierce your very heart.” (Luke 2:21-35.) WHAT DOES JESUS TEACH US HERE? 1. Never Stop _____________________________ Your Mother And Father. Jesus never stopped obeying the fifth commandment: “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12). How can we honor our parents? • By Making Sure They Know That You _______________________ Them. • You Can Honor Them By __________________________________ Them. • You Can Honor Them By Refusing To _____________________ Of Them. 2. Followers of Christ form a spiritual ______________________. “From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.” John19:27 "Your mother and brothers are outside looking for you." "Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother." Mark 3:32-35 3.
