With great excitement, the Springbank Community High
School (SCHS), Rocky View Schools and the Global Sport
Academy Group are launching the Springbank Sport
Academy in September of 2015. SCHS Principal Pam
Davidson and her team, along with Global Sport Academy
Group CEO Mark Maloney, have been refining this
audacious vision for some time.
The Sport Academy supports the entrepreneurial spirit of
Alberta Education, while enhancing school programming
and choice for students in multi-sports for both males
and females. The Academy will attract outstanding
young leaders and student athletes into the Springbank
Community and allow them to develop their skill sets
in our outstanding athletic and academic facilities in the
Springbank Community. In the first year, the academy will
be offering hockey, soccer and golf for students in Grades
9 - 12.
The Sport Academy is not simply a physical education class
or education program. The people at Global Sport Academy
Group are visionary leaders in the sport industry and are
striving to transform the coaching and development model
of youth sports on a global level. To be eligible, prospective
student athletes are required to complete an academic and
athletic review, as well as a meeting/interview. With over

Springbank Minor Hockey Association Tournament Highlights
SMHA Hockey Players Have Fun & Give Back With Team Tournaments
Another season of Springbank Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) tournament hockey came to an end in March in
conjunction with the close of the past hockey season. Each year the SMHA Ice Scheduler and Tournament Coordinator
endeavor to provide all the teams with a home tournament.
This year, we saw an increase in player numbers and consequently an increase in the number of SMHA hockey teams. This
did place a strain on our already taxed ice allocations, but we were able to schedule 38 tournaments - 29 were held at SPFAS
and 9 at Winsport in Canada Olympic Park. Many teams co-hosted their tournaments, or hosted their tournament games
over week days instead of hosting them using the standard weekend tournament format. By the end of the season, SMHA
was successful in provided all teams a home tournament experience.
This past hockey season, SMHA teams hosted a number of special tournaments. The SMHA Midget 1 team hosted their
annual Chase Hudye Memorial Tournament in December - this year’s tournament was the 3rd annual such event. The
Timbits age group honored the memory of Nathan O’Brien from January 9th -11th with the Nathan O’Brien Timbits Festival.
The SPFAS arenas were taken over by superheroes for this weekend, including many community “superheroes” who attended
a very special opening ceremony. Many of our teams hosted tournaments that included “community building and giving
back” initiatives which generated food bank donations, involved fund raising to support adopted families, or contributed
funds that have been allocated to help kids to be involved in sports.
SMHA is proud of the efforts of our hockey teams, their community spirit and their generous hearts. We are already looking
forward to our next hockey season, and the related tournaments that will be held, commencing in the Fall of 2015.

General Manager’s SPFAS Updates
Along with our entire Springbank Community, SPFAS is
transitioning from Winter to Spring & Summer activities.
Subject to weather conditions, the SPFAS playing fields
are presently scheduled to be available for a wide array of
recreational activities in and around May 1st. SPFAS is also
in the process of planning for various Spring & Summer
special events, including the Ride Don’t Hide Cycling Event,
the EKKOC Dog Show, the Springbank Antique Show, the
Calgary Highland Games and the Springbank Community’s
Fall Fair.
Additional SPFAS updates with regards Spring & Summer
plans are outlined below.
SPFAS Capital Project Updates – SPFAS is continuing
to advance the planning work required to complete
grounds grading changes, parking lot alterations and other
infrastructure enhancements that are included in the SPFAS
Main Site Stormwater Drainage Plan. Completing this high
priority initiative in the Summer of 2015 is vital for assisting
SPFAS to sustain and preserve the Park’s existing recreation
facilities, equipment and related infrastructure. The primary
objective of this capital project is to, on a timely basis, move and
channel stormwater that runs into the SPFAS Main Site from
other adjacent properties off of the Main Site, especially away
from the Joe Phillips and Red Dutton Arenas, the Outdoor
Rink, the two baseball diamonds and the main parking lot.
This capital project also includes infrastructure installations
that are intended to reduce subsurface groundwater volumes
and related high water tables evident at various locations
throughout the Main Site. The completion of this capital
project is currently subject to receiving related permit and
funding approvals that are presently pending. In addition,
SPFAS has prepared a formal plan to replace the rink boards
and enhance the players bench seating in the Red Dutton
Arena. As with the Main Site Stormwater Drainage Plan
project, this initiative is currently anticipated to be completed
this Summer subject to the receipt of required funding, time
line and other approvals that are presently pending.
Shane Homes Curling Rink Spring Transition To Indoor
Baseball & Other Sports Facility – Earlier in April, SPFAS
completed the conversion of the Shane Homes Curling Rink
to a drypad training facility that includes artificial turf, netting
and baseball training equipment installations. This facility
will be used extensively by the Calgary West Little League
Association (the organization with which Springbank baseball
players can register to play Little League baseball) during the
months of April, May and June. Other opportunities are
available to rent this venue for other activities. SPFAS invites
other organizations and parties to inquire about renting this
facility during April, May and June. It can be modified so the
artificial turf can be used for indoor soccer, football practice,
rugby play and other dryland training activities. To inquire
about renting this indoor training venue, contact SPFAS by
6
calling 403-242-2223 Extension 22 or by sending an email to
springbankpark@springbankpark.com .
Outdoor Rink Status – The Outdoor Rink has a concrete
drypad available that can be utilized for a wide array of
sports (including ball hockey and lacrosse) activities, as well
as for birthday parties and other events. To inquire about
renting this facility, contact SPFAS by calling 403-242-2223
Extension 22 or by sending an email to springbankpark@
springbankpark.com .
Spring Indoor Ice – During the upcoming Spring and Summer
seasons, SPFAS will be retaining ice in the Red Dutton and
Joe Phillips Arenas. You are welcome to skate at SPFAS as you
coach a group of kids playing hockey, host a birthday party,
plan a hockey team’s season ending wind up celebration,
bring your family for a skate, or play a casual shinny hockey
game with friends. Or maybe you just want to skate or play
hockey with your family members and friends to enjoy a cool
skating rink on a very hot Summer’s day!. You can direct
your ice booking inquiries to SPFAS by calling 403-242-2223
Extension 22 or by sending an email to springbankpark@
springbankpark.com. Come to SPFAS, your “home away
from home”, to skate or play hockey with family and friends!
To obtain more information about SPFAS and the activities
at the Park, go to the SPFAS website (www.springbankpark.
com), give us a call, or come for a visit. Thank you once again
for your ongoing support for SPFAS.

Springbank Community Planning
Association (SCPA) Update
SCPA held a very successful Annual General Meeting (AGM)
and Community Meeting at the Springbank Community
High School on March 2nd. We had a very large crowd, with
loads of questions be presented regarding the Government
of Alberta’s proposal to place a dam in Springbank in order
to save a portion of the City of Calgary from future flooding.
We even had a surprise guest at this meeting, Matt Machielse,
one of the Assistant Deputy Ministers from Alberta
Environment and Sustainable Resources. Unfortunately, he
had no more answers available at this meeting than members
of the Springbank community were able to provide to each
other. We are keeping our eyes and ears open for complete
science and cost/benefits for all of the options available for
flood management in the Elbow Watershed.
Thank you to all of Springbank for continuing to show
interest in our Community.
SCPA thanks Dave Laurie for his contributions to the board
– a term well served. We welcome both Kim Magnuson and
Simone Byers to the board.

A Beautiful Tail
Red Fox Vulpes vulpes
The Red Fox is a common sight in Alberta. It
can be found in many different environments
in the countryside, including forests, pastures,
farmlands, mountains, prairies, and even arid
areas (like south eastern Alberta). The Red
Fox is an adaptable animal, and has
learned to live alongside people in the
city, in parks and golf courses. They
really get around, travelling about 10
km everyday, the distances depending
on how good the local food supply is
for them.
The Red Fox is a member of the canid
family, and has very similar features to the dog,
with long legs and a slender body. Red Foxes
live out in the open by themselves most of the
time, unless they are raising a family (starting
in the spring). They dig dens and live as a
family until the pups (also called kits or cubs)
are ready to go out into the world on their own
(in the fall).
Although it’s called a “Red” Fox, their colouring ranges from red to brown and even
to black or silver-tipped fur. The males (called dogs or reynards) are a bit bigger
(Red Foxes weigh from 5 to 8 kg) than the females (called vixen) and their beautiful
rust-coloured, full, bushy tails are about 2/3 of its body length. This tail is very useful
to a Red Fox, because if it is cold or sleeping out in the open, it can wrap its tail
around its body to keep warm.
The Red Fox is a carnivore and hence eats mostly meat: hunting mice, voles, gophers,
hares, frogs, insects, and birds’ eggs. They do eat some plants, often just the fruits
and berries. Red Foxes hunt and store food even when they
aren’t hungry, just in case their next meal is hard to find.
Watching a Red Fox hunt is fun because they crouch down
low and then pounce on their prey, acting very much like a
cat.
The Red Fox has excellent eyesight and hearing, and a terrific
sense of smell (smelling their prey even through a thick
blanket of snow) making them good hunters. Although the
Red Fox is nocturnal (being out and about mostly at night), it is not uncommon
to see them in the daytime too, especially when they are raising a family. After all,
when you have a family to feed, it takes a lot of time and effort to hunt enough
food to keep everyone happy and healthy.
If you find an injured or orphaned Red Fox or other wild animal in need, please
contact the Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society at 403-239-2488 or

Bruce McAllister, MLA,
For some time, we have been spending the most on services
while also taxing less than anywhere else in Canada, and it
isn’t sustainable. So in order to straighten things out without
losing our competitive advantages, this plan will get us back
to treating the Heritage Fund the way Premier Lougheed
originally intended.

Challenge and excitement often go hand in hand, and the
current situation in Alberta politics is a good example.
You’ll know that the new budget was revealed recently, and
you’ll also know that it contains a few items that some people
might have a tough time swallowing at first glance. These are
challenging times we face, so naturally this new budget reflects
that. But the way I see it, we can either wring our hands and
worry, or we can play the hand we’re dealt to the best of our
ability and take ownership of our future as a province. I can’t
speak for anyone else, but I’ll opt for the latter any day, and I
believe this new budget allows us to do just that.
Yes, oil is down, and yes, so is our revenue along with it. This
gives us all the more incentive to chart a course forward that
will ultimately take us to a place where we’re no longer held
hostage by volatile resource revenue. This budget is the first
step forward to a more stable and prosperous future, setting
in motion a process that will unfold over the coming years.
This means
! reigning in spending while boosting revenues.
As the MLA for Chestermere-Rocky View and as an Albertan,
I’m pleased this government has a clear, concrete plan for
moving forward. This is a time that calls for decisive and
fiscally responsible leadership, and that’s what we’re getting.
I also applaud this government for laying this plan out for all
Albertans to see. Too often governments reveal an election
budget full of goodies. Premier Prentice has not done that. The
budget is measured, it’s responsible, and most importantly it
puts Alberta back on a path of fiscal sustainability.

We also realize that we can’t slash and burn. That isn’t
sustainable, either. After all, basic things like schools and
infrastructure are absolute necessities. If you have kids or
drive on highways, you’ll appreciate this fact all too well. That’s
why this budget sticks to the promised schools that we’ll need
in order to take care of the growing student population. We’re
going to hold the line on spending, but we’ll also continue to
make sure the essentials are covered. I think we’re striking
the right balance by doing so.

Canadian Mental Health Association – Calgary Region
(CMHA – Calgary) will host its 2nd annual Ride Don’t
Hide event in Alberta on June 21, 2015. Ride Don’t
Hide is a community bike ride hosted, nationally, by
the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA),
with the goal to raise awareness and help break the
stigma surrounding mental health while raising
essential funds to support mental health programs.
CMHA rides will be hosted in four provinces in over
30 communities with the aim to engage over 6,000
participants and raise over $1,000,000.
The community event is a ride, not a race, with routes
designed for riders of all ages and abilities—from
novice rider to the advanced cyclist. CMHA – Calgary
led Alberta’s first ride in 2014 with over 125 cyclists,
raising over $30,000 and in 2015, it is expected to
double in size and engage 250+ participants.
One in five of our neighbours, friends and family

remains one of the biggest barriers for those seeking

The vision for the nation-wide event is to create the

stigma and discrimination surrounding mental illness
and help local communities raise needed funds and
meet local mental health needs.

Competition Successes At The
Springbank Figure Skating Club
While the adage of “April showers bring May
flowers” rings true, our figure skating team
has been showering us with medal wins all
season long! Our athletes have practiced
very intensively all season and have shown
impressive feats of athleticism at various
competitions and test days. Skaters in our Club
have been representing us well in all levels of
competition, from STAR 1 all the way up to
competitive Pre-Novice level skating.
As parents, we are incredibly proud of them for
their persistence demonstrated with training
as well as for their determination to achieve
their own personal bests, all while at the same
time excelling at their schoolwork and other
activities.
Dr. Alison Arnold is a well-known psychologist
working with elite athletes and has these
tips for mental preparation for Competition
Countdown.
It’s very simple.
You compete based on how you train.
If you train well, you compete well.
It’s not about who is lucky - it’s about who
is prepared.
Thank you and congratulations to all of
our parents and coaches, and of course
to our athletes, for training well and
competing well. This team effort has
proven fruitful once again!

Don’t Damn Springbank Organization’s Update
for the Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir Proposal
Here is a summary of where we are today:
• Our group
dontdamnspringbank.org remains firmly
100% in opposition to the proposed
dam.
• The Government of Alberta is proposing
our community be sacrificed to attempt to
save another. There must be a better way.
• This project does nothing to protect
upstream communities (Redwood
Meadows and Bragg Creek).
• We have learned from the recent open
houses that the true size and costs of the
dam are much larger than previously
reported.
•The Government of Alberta needs to buy
approximately 7,000 acres of expensive
Springbank land for this project- and buy
out many homes, farms, and businesses.
• A much better option is on Crown
land- the McLean Creek option.

Harmony Update to the
Springbank Community
The arrival of Spring is a happy time. We have been hard
at work throughout the Winter months, building the
foundation of Harmony. As we progress toward our public
opening this Fall, we want to provide our Springbank
neighbours with an update.
Construction on the Harmony began in October of 2014,
allowing our development teams to install the necessary
requirements for sewer and water access for Phase 1. This
allowed for work on the first set of show homes to begin.
Harmony’s first two show home parades will feature a
total of 15 stunning homes crafted by our premier builder
group – Augusta Fine Homes, Baywest Homes, Broadview
Homes, Homes by Avi and Sterling Homes. These five
award winning builders will showcase their interpretations
of Farmhouse, Arts & Crafts, French Country, Prairie and
Contemporary architecture in two distinct collections.
Once open, visitors can explore the Carriage Home
collection, featuring detached garages with optional suites
above, and the Estate Home collection, set on larger lots
with triple attached garages. Show homes are set to open
in the Fall of 2015 with a special advance viewing being
arranged for guests who have registered with us. Register at
www.liveinharmony.ca if you would like your own invite!
Harmony’s “Connection Centre” will be the crowning
jewel of an already exciting show home experience. The
Connection Centre will offer an interactive and welcoming
place for visitors to learn more about Harmony and what
Spring Is Here At The Springbank
Playschool!
We’ve all been looking forward to warmer weather for our
children to enjoy the outdoors. Our kids, particularly those
in the 3 year old program, have enjoyed some nice days at the
SPFAS playground to close off some of their classroom times.
There, they’ve had fun running around with their buddies in
a safe and adventurous playground.
Speaking of buddies, the Playschool hosted a Buddy Night
in March. This was an opportunity for parents, who may
not normally be able, to join their children at the Playschool
for a night of games and treats. It was a great way for them
to see some of what their children do during class time. The
children take alot of pride in showing off their classroom
activities to their Moms and Dads.

makes it such a special community – including the history
of the land and land owners, the technology and innovation
being used in the community, and the abundant amenities
that will complement existing amenities in the community,
making residents and neighbours busy and active for
generations to come. We look forward to the Connection
Centre becoming a place for visitors and neighbours to
gather, learn and connect with one another.
Construction on Harmony’s Water Treatment Plant, a key
component to our Integrated Water Strategy, has begun.
With an anticipated two year build out, the Water Treatment
Plant will eventually provide the community of Harmony
with all of its potable water.
Construction has also begun on Harmony’s Waste Water
Treatment Plant. This facility is the first of its kind in
Canada and one of the most advanced waste water facilities
in North America.
We are immensely proud of the measures being taken in
Harmony to be good stewards of our water supply. To learn
more about how the Water and Waste Water Treatment
Plants contribute to a much larger Integrated Water System,
please visit www.liveinharmony.ca and take a look at our
Sustainability page.
Thank you to all of our friends and neighbors for your
interest in Harmony. Please stay tuned for more updates as
the coming months are sure to be exciting!

The 3 year olds have also recently started their music program
with Miss Rosalyn. This is an 8 week program that consists
of fun through music, song and interactive activities. They
certainly look forward to their time with Miss Rosalyn!
The last day before the Easter break, the children were happy
to make their Easter egg baskets for their Easter Egg hunt,
which took place just outside in front of the SPFAS building.
It’s always an adventure here at Springbank Playschool!
If you like to know more about what we are doing at our
Playschool, please go to our website ( www.springbankplayschool.ca ) to obtain additional information, as well as to find
out how you can get your child enrolled in the Playschool.
