Training for Life
CGC training provides “life skills” plus adoption appeal
Justin and Audrey Paslow searched
for the right dog for nearly a year.
It was a Facebook video of Karma,
a pretty brown and white pit mix
showing off her good manners in
Canine Good Citizen class, that
convinced them that their search
might be over.
When they met, Karma quickly
closed the deal with her playful,
sweet personality and some face
licks. Karma found the wonderful
home she deserved, but it took
a while. Karma arrived in June
and we all waited for someone to
realize what a great dog she was. It
wasn’t until she began the Canine
Good Citizen (CGC) class that
some “good karma” came her way.
Cyd Cross, president of Out of
the Pits, teaches a Friday evening
class at the APF and she offered to
include Karma. Jennifer Perrigo,
APF’s adoption coordinator, was
Karma’s handler for seven of the
eight sessions. Justin and Audrey
attended the last couple of classes
with her, including the CGC test,
which she passed with flying colors!
According to Cyd, CGC training
teaches good manners at home
and in the community, but one of
its greatest benefits, especially for
shelter dogs, is that it helps them
to learn to think with distractions.
Training at home is good, but it’s
not the same as being in a room
with several other dogs and developing the kind of focus that will
help in life. It gives dogs essential

tools for managing life both in the
shelter and in the world.
A visit with animal
communicator David Louis
Four more shelter dogs have begun
the class. Two have been adopted
and are completing the training
with their new owners. Tiger Lily
and Chica are doing great, and their
staff handlers continue to reinforce
what they learn in class daily.
We recently had several
animals whose behaviors
and conditions concerned
us. We used all of the
traditional means we knew
to provide comfort and ease
their fears, but we wished
we could know what they
were feeling. When animal
communicator David Louis
offered to spend some time “talking”
to them, we were thrilled!

Meet Tiger Lily
Miss Kitty and Elroy were two
special cats. Miss Kitty had a
condition which caused constant
tremors and Elroy was blind. We
felt they would both be more
at ease with a companion, so
we housed them together. They
seemed to get along, yet we
wondered if Miss Kitty’s constant
motion and exuberance was a bit
too much for Elroy. So we asked
David. He learned that Miss Kitty
felt a sense of responsibility toward
Elroy and in turn, Elroy very much

Tiger Lily is an easygoing 1-year-old
pit bull mix who loves to cuddle. Yet
she’s always up for playtime when the
opportunity presents itself. She is a
smart girl who looks to her person for
guidance and truly enjoys learning.
We recommend a home with older
children and no cats. She may also do
well with another dog in her new home.

From the Executive Director
Dear friends of APF,
As the new year has arrived, we look forward to implementing our objectives for running our new Community Spay/
Neuter Clinic and animal shelter. Preparing for 2014 began last fall. We started with developing the budget, a not-sosimple task given the many animals we serve. After the budget was approved, we completed plans to enter into our first
full year of running our low-cost clinic. Since opening in September, we have successfully performed over 600 spay
and neuter surgeries. We are also committed to increasing adoptions as we prepare to receive those oh-so-cute, but ohso-homeless kittens that will soon arrive. The APF is ready for 2014, but we cannot succeed without your help. Your
contributions will enable us to accomplish the following objectives this year:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Convert our former grooming space into a separate receiving room for cats and kittens, thus reducing their stress;
Recruit additional volunteers to help enrich the lives of our animals as they await placement in their forever homes;
Participate in more community adoption clinics;
Enhance and expand our fundraising and development programs;
Perform air quality testing to ensure that the air in each of our rooms is of the highest quality for our animals, which will reduce the spread of respiratory illness, so common to shelters, and perform necessary upgrades;
Improve our website so people can better access and share information about adoptable pets;
For the second time in seven years, host a team of experts from Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine to review APF operations and suggest opportunities for improvement;
Collaborate with other animal welfare groups to standardize regional statistics.
As we move into this new year, we want you to know how extremely thankful we are for your friendship, support, and
contributions. We are optimistic about sharing the future with you as we continue to work to reduce pet overpopulation
and place more homeless pets in loving homes.
Thank you,
Michael Daugherty

Miss Kitty & Elroy
Boot Camp for Shelter Dogs
Miss Kitty was a 4-month-old tiger kitten who was given up by her family
in November. She was born with a condition known as cerebellar hypoplasia, a neurological problem which causes jerky movements and uncoordinated motion that increases when an animal is excited and subsides when
they are at ease. The disease does not get better or worse with age, and
animals can adapt and live otherwise healthy, happy lives. Although she
seemed to be in constant motion, Miss Kitty loved attention. We knew
we needed to find a special home for this sweet, playful girl.
When Samantha Smith and Amy Pollard, owners of doggy day camp
CaNine to Five were building their business, they knew that helping
homeless dogs find their forever homes would be an important part of
their work. So they created Shelter & Rescue Boot Camp.
About two weeks later, Elroy arrived. At 4 months of age, he was the
youngest of three strays brought in together, found wandering around
an apartment complex. We quickly realized that Elroy could not see.
This sweet little guy was very confused by his surroundings, and we did
our best to reassure him by holding and cuddling him, which he loved.
One day, animal care staff members had the idea of putting the pair
together. They seemed to bond quickly, but we questioned whether Miss
Kitty might be a bit too much for Elroy. (See related cover story on
David Louis.) We watched them as they played, wrestled, slept together
and cleaned each other and, day by day, seemed to be more and more
content in each other’s company.
So the challenge to find a loving home – now for two special needs cats
– became greater. Miss Kitty’s photo on our website drew in a young
man named Nathan. Right before Christmas he came for a visit with
the pair, which he adopted that day.
Boot Camp is a “board and train” program for shelters and rescues.
It lasts between two and four weeks and teaches good leash manners,
obedience, and social skills. The pup attends camp each day, then goes
home with Samantha at night and on weekends to learn proper “at
home” skills. The training provides a great deal of information about
the pup and, all throughout, CaNine to Five posts “pupdates” on their
website and Facebook page.
Sleepy (now Otter) was the APF’s first Boot Camp pup. Although
Samantha tried not to fall in love, she ended up adopting him. He now
goes to camp each day and helps other pups with their play skills and
confidence building. Our second Boot Camp pup was Coco, a happy
girl and a great student. She was transferred to Out of the Pits rescue
and adopted by a wonderful family who hopes to train her as a therapy dog.
The shelter environment can be tough for dogs, especially those who
need socialization. Boot Camp has proven to be a great regimen for
dogs like Paris, a tri-color beagle mix who was initially nervous around
other dogs. Through Boot Camp, Paris has become much more at ease
with other dogs through slow introductions and confidence-building
exercises. Paris has completed her training and is now available. See her
bio below.
CaNine to Five is located at 1742 Chrisler Avenue in Schenectady. Learn
more about their day camp and training programs at www.caninetofivellc.com.
Our thanks to Samantha and Amy for their commitment to homeless pets.
Meet Paris!
Miss Kitty’s and Elroy’s special needs made them perfect companions for each other.
According to the new pet dad, Miss Kitty, now Samus, and Elroy, now
Bambino, settled pretty quickly into their new home. Samus immediately toured the house, while Bambino hid for the first couple of days.
Now, Nathan reports, Bambino runs throughout his home with confidence. He knows where his food, water, and litter box are and climbs
up to the sofa or bed for naps. Bambino comes running when he hears
the crinkling of his favorite mouse toy, and likes to carry it around in his
mouth like a hunter. Samus tries to catch everything on TV. They love to
play and chase one another, and sleep together as well.
Though Nathan was a bit concerned about their conditions, a visit to
their vet reassured him that both are healthy and that their special
characteristics won’t prevent them from living good lives. We wish them
many happy years together.
Paris greets everyone with a fullbody wiggle. She loves playing
fetch, going for walks, and pretty
much any activity that involves her
people. At about 2 years old, she is
the perfect age at which to see her
true personality, which can best be
described as playful! She has nice
leash manners, is crate trained and
housebroken, and knows many
commands. Paris has become quite
a social dog and would do well with
a friendly male dog in her forever
home. She will need plenty of
exercise, structure, and love.

Perrigo, at 374-3944, ext. 105, or

Dr. Durham Joins
S/N Clinic Team
The APF welcomes Dr. Jessica Durham as its
Community Spay/Neuter Clinic veterinarian.
Dr. Durham has been with us on a part-time
basis since October,
and will start full-time
in March. Originally
from Indiana, Dr.
Durham received
her veterinary degree
from the University of
Missouri College of
Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Jessica Durham is the
She has worked in
APF’s new Spay/Neuter Clinic
small animal practice veterinarian
locally for eight years.
She especially enjoys surgery and dentistry – a
good thing, as she will be performing upwards
of 25 operations daily. She shares her home
with her husband, a daughter age 8, a son age
5, and a lab, a husky, and three cats.
She is excited about this role as it allows her
to help pets that most likely have never before
seen a veterinarian or may otherwise not be
able to afford veterinary care. She gives her
colleagues in the clinic high praise, calling
them “efficient, caring, and professional.” She
especially likes working in the new clinic’s
surgical suite with its bright, natural light.
Lazy Dog Loves
Shelter Dogs
Perhaps the one thing that Lazy Dog Cookie
Co. owners Amy and Keith Augustine are
as passionate about as making healthy, allnatural dog treats is helping shelter dogs find
forever homes. Lazy Dog, based in Ballston
Spa, supports a variety
of animal welfare causes
in the region and now
they will be providing a
package of yummy treats
for every dog adopted from the APF. They
also have a new program that allows people to
order their cookies online, receive a discount,
and donate a portion back to the shelter. Learn
more at www.lazydogcookies.com.

Intake by Appointment
If you were to spend a few hours observing
animal intake in the shelter, you would see the
gamut – from quick drop-off “transactions”
to more lengthy and often tearful good-byes.
In a busy setting, the experience varies greatly
for both the public and our staff. With no
control over the number of animals coming
in the door, it’s a challenge to have personal,
one-on-one conversations and to capture all the
information we can about an incoming pet. For
that reason, we are transitioning to a “surrender
by appointment” process for owned pets.
Other shelters that have instituted such a
process report more thorough intake interviews,
which lead to more useful information for
adopters. But most importantly, having some
control over the influx of animals prevents
overcrowding and allows for planning,
especially in the case of young animals for
whom foster care is needed.
We will continue to accept stray cats and
small animals without appointments and in
emergency situations we will accept owned
pets as needed.
Continued from page 1
enjoyed her company and felt secure with her.
We kept them together and are so glad we did.
(Read their update on page 3.)
Whether or not you believe that some people
have the ability to intuit what animals feel
inside, our feeling is that we won’t rule out
any positive, safe means of helping an animal
during the transition they face once they enter
the shelter. For so many, we have no way of
knowing what their life has been like up to
that point. We only see the outward behaviors
– such as fear – which point to emotional scars
they hold within. It’s one more way to understand and help them … and don’t we all want
to better understand the animals we love?
David defines his life’s mission as “bringing
people and animals together through extraordinary means to facilitate healing, happiness,
and improved communication.” People seek
out his talents for many reasons – from general
curiousity, to gaining information that will
complement veterinary care, to knowing when
it is time to let an animal go. Please join us on
March 8 for a chance to meet David and watch
him demonstrate his fascinating work with
shelter pets. Learn more about him online at

Thank you to all of our donors who made the APF Community Spay/Neuter Clinic a reality.
Space limitations prevent listing all of the names here, but the entire list of 700+ donors is included on our
website at www.animalprotective.org on the spay/neuter page. We are grateful for your support. If your name has

And the Winner Is ...
The lucky winner of a brand new 2014 Subaru
Impreza from Capitaland Motors was Lois
Pasternack of Slingerlands. The winner of a 40”
television was Liz Mack of Schenectady, and the
winner of $100 in Lyle’s Hoagies gift cards was
Wendy Keller of Fort Pierce, Florida.
The raffle effort was coordinated in memory of
Tammy and Jessie McCormack, mother and
daughter, who were murdered in Rotterdam in
April of 2013. According to Joanne Fontanelli,
a close family friend who spearheaded the effort,
this was a way for friends and family to turn the
tragedy into something positive for the animals.
She called Tammy a beautiful person who
was well-loved in the community and known
through her work in the Schenectady school
system for many years. The McCormack family
also owns Lyle’s Hoagies.
Throughout last fall, Fontanelli and her team
attended many community events with the goal
of selling 500 tickets at $50 each. With great
perseverance and a positive attitude, she met that
goal and nearly $6,000 was raised for the shelter.
Our thanks to Joanne, her husband Joe, friends
and family of the McCormacks, Capitaland
Motors, and all who purchased tickets.
Our congratulations to the winners!
Lois Pasternack gave the 2014 Subaru Impreza she won to her
son, John. Regina Grego, owner of Capitaland Motors presents
him with the keys to his new car.
