Dissection of A Chicken Wing & Drumstick Lab
Purpose:
The purpose of this laboratory experiment is to dissect a chicken and drumstick. In doing
so you will gain knowledge of the structure and functions of bones and joints
Objectives:
1. Reveal and identify the bones that make up a chicken wing and drumstick.
2. Identify the major parts of bones and joints
3. Draw and label a depiction of the bone and parts that you find during this lab.
Key Terms:
It is essential that you know these terms to participate properly in this experiment
1. Bone- Hard tissue composed mainly of calcium minerals that provide structural
support and produce red blood cells.
2. Cartilage- Shiny, white, hard tissue found at the end of long bones that helps prevent
bones from grinding against one another.
3. Tendon- Shiny white bands of hard tissue that connects muscles to bones.
4. Ligament- Strong white band of tissue that connects two bones together at a joint.
5. Marrow- Soft tissue filling the spongy interiors of bones
Required Materials:
1. Chicken wing 2. Chicken drumstick
3. Paper plate 4. Paper towels
5. Pair of Scissors 6. Microscope (optional)
Chicken Wing Dissection Procedure:
1. Carefully cut the skin off the chicken wing
2. Peel the skin away from the wing
3. Carefully cut the meat off the bones in the chicken wing
4. Find a place where two bones connect inside the wing. This is a joint.
5. Now, bend back the two bones that make up the joint and crack the joint.
DO NOT tear the bones apart.
6. Find a ligament, it should be a tough-looking tissue.
7. Ask your teacher to crack the largest bone that is in your chicken wing.
8. Find the marrow, it is the soft tissue inside a bone.
9. On the top of the next page, draw what you see at the exposed bone end of the bone.
Make sure to label the bone and marrow correctly.
Cross-section of bone (with labels of bone and marrow)
10. Describe what you see in the center of the bone
Drumstick dissection Procedure
1. Carefully cut the skin covering the bony (smaller) end of the drumstick
2. Pull the skin off the drumstick toward the larger end
3. Find the cartilage, it is the shiny white material that covers the bony end of the
drumstick.
4. Remove the meat at the smaller end of the drumstick.
5. Find the tendon, the large, round tough piece of tissue that connects the muscle to the
bone.
Define the following parts that you located in this lab exercise…
1. Bone-
2. Cartilage-
3. Joint-
4. Ligament-
5. Marrow-
6. Tendon-
Special note to Instructors:
A chicken thigh can be used to replace a chicken wing in any part of this lab.
