Middle School Composition Camp
This camp is designed to give middle school students
insights into both traditional and more recent methods of
music composition. In our exploration we will examine
ways in which composers have worked both within a
purely tonal musical setting but, depending upon the
experience of the students, we are likely also to examine
more modern methods of composing that include using
whole-tone, pentatonic, quartal, quintal and 12-tone
techniques.

GEAR UP North Carolina
GEAR UP stands for “Gaining Early Awareness and
Readiness for Undergraduate Programs” and is a national initiative whose mission is to significantly increase the
number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP is funded
through a competitive seven-year matching grant from
the U.S. Department of Education. As an early intervention college access program, GEAR UP serves an entire
cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh
grade and follows the cohort through high school.
GEAR UP’s goals are to:
•Increase academic performance and preparation
for postsecondary education;
•Increase the rate of high school graduation and
participation in postsecondary education; and
•Increase GEAR UP students’ and their families’
knowledge of postsecondary education options,
preparation, and financing.
To achieve these goals, GEAR UP provides a variety
of interventions to students and their families including
college visits, summer programs, career exploration,
mentoring, job shadowing, tutoring, college advising,
and financial aid workshops. In addition, professional
development is offered to school and district staff to
share best practices and to assist with the creation and
strengthening of a college access culture in the target
schools and the community.
During the 2012-13 academic year, GEAR UP North
Carolina will be serving cohorts of students attending
qualifying schools in the following school districts:
•Alamance-Burlington School System,
•Edenton-Chowan Schools,
•Lenoir County Schools,
•McDowell County Schools,
•Pamlico County Schools,

Wake Forest
LENS @ Wake Forest (Learn, Experience, Navigate, Solve)
LENS is a three-week, residential experience at Wake
Forest University that offers high school students the
opportunity to do something different and challenging
during their summer. Thirty-six students will be chosen
to participate in the program designed as an “incubator
for change-makers.”
The academic theme is “Sustainability: Operate
Locally and Extend Globally.” Wake Forest University
professors and experts will engage students in the
biological, ecological, political, economic, social,
and legal aspects of sustainability. The Experiential
Classroom will offer participants hands-on opportunities
to explore scientific concepts underlying current issues
of sustainability. Through Living Labs, participants will
explore local businesses and organizations incorporating
principles of sustainability. Small Group sessions
will facilitate a platform for participants to research a
community sustainability need, test ideas, and develop
an action plans. In addition to interactive learning,
LENS offers a variety of fun activities to introduce you
to the social life of college.
LENS accepts and reviews applications on a rolling
basis. Students are encouraged to apply by March as the
program may fill early. Limited need-based financial
aid is available and requires a separate form available at

Science Explorations for Girls
This educational and fascinating camp gives girls the
opportunity to explore multiple aspects of science while
experiencing life on a college campus. Campers will
learn anatomy and physiology by engaging in mammalian eye dissections and owl pellet investigations;
discover important aspects of genetics through a human
traits and heredity lab experience; and learn how science
and technology have advanced research by participating
in hands-on, inquiry-based experiments each day. In our
forensics unit, campers will learn about solving a murder
using DNA fingerprinting and blood typing; in earth science, they will build a biome. The camp will conclude
