Waseda University About Waseda Waseda University is known around the world as one of the top universities in Japan. It has produced seven prime ministers so far, and its alumni are widely active in various fields, not only in Japan, but also on the world stage. Furthermore, under the principle that its founder Shigenobu Okuma advocated“, Harmonization of Eastern and Western Cultures ” , Waseda University has proactively opened its doors to international students since its founding. Currently, approx. 5,000 international students have enrolled from about 100 countries, which is the largest number among Japanese universities. Without a doubt, Waseda is the most internationalized university in Japan. History Waseda University was founded by Shigenobu Okuma in 1882. Throughout its history the university has been supported by three principles of learning, centered on Independence of Learning, and other ideals such as enterprising spirit and an anti-elitist philosophy. Provides an International Student House (WISH) dormitory, where 900 students, half Japanese and half international, can live together for daily interaction and cultural exchange Research Activities The Waseda Goes “Global Plan” (Top Global University Project :during FY2014-FY2023) Waseda Goes Global, also known as the Ocean concept, is a ten-year plan to connect the University with the world and revolutionize its research and education programs, amidst the dynamic currents of global scholarship, to train 100,000 graduates for global leadership and to secure a global top 100 ranking in at least 18 of its 25 research areas. We offer an open and diverse environment whereby world-class students and researchers will have greater flexibility to move dynamically across borders. OPENNESS World-class faculty will be recruited from around the globe. Waseda will implement fundamental governance reforms to integrate powers and responsibilities within the university as well as establish a financial base that will ensure continuous funds in education and research even after the MEXT “Top Global University” project ends. DIVERSITY With the aim of acquiring knowledge and establishing a framework to reform the system for academic programs as well as the governance structure in the university, Waseda will initially implement drastic reforms in model units over six research areas.
