Objectives This Fellowship program offers faculty members in Japanese Studies at designated international institutions the opportunity to undertake 2-12 months of research at Waseda University in Tokyo. It also aims to provide Waseda students the opportunity to learn Japanese history, culture and society from new perspectives by having the Fellows do limited teaching during their stay. 2. Eligibility Applicants must meet the following criteria: -hold a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or above at one of the designated international higher education institutions both at the time of application and during their scheduled fellowship at Waseda -have a demonstrated research record in Japanese studies -have teaching experience at the college level -be proficient in English and be able to conduct classes in English 3. Term of the Fellowship Successful applicants may designate a period of stay at Waseda for up to 12 months, provided that it includes one of the following instructional terms: - One academic year: September 26, 2013, through August 3, 2014 - One semester: September 26, 2013, through February 5, 2014 or April 6, 2014, through August 3, 2014 4. Fellowship Obligations - Fellows will conduct research in their specialized field in conjunction with Waseda faculty and their graduate students. - Fellows will acknowledge Waseda University in any research papers published during their Fellowship or resulting from their work at Waseda. - Fellows will teach two classes per week, each being 90 minutes long and conducted in English. The number of teaching sessions will vary depending on the length of the Fellowship: Fellowship Period One-year (12 months): 2 classes/week for 16 weeks×two terms (including the examination period) One-semester (6 months): 2 classes/week for 16 weeks (including the examination period) *Fellows may also offer classes based on our quarter system. (2 classes/week for 8 weeks including the examination period) Academic Calendar based on quarters : September 26, 2013, through November 22, 2013 November 25, 2013, through February 5, 2014 April 6, 2014, through June 7, 2014 June 8, 2014, through August 3, 2014 *Fellows may teach summer intensive courses during the University’s summer vacation. Class Details Title: Japanese Studies in Global Perspective *A subtitle will be added reflecting the Fellow’s area of specialty. *Fellows may offer classes according to the following three options: (a) teach the same class twice, (b) teach two different classes, or (c) teach one class and participate in a graduate seminar led by a Waseda faculty member with whom the Fellow is collaborating in research. Expected Number of Students: approximately 30 students/ per each class *Fellows will teach in classes which consist of both Japanese and International students and students may range from first-year students to seniors. 5. Waseda Affiliation and Position - Fellows will be affiliated with Waseda’s Center for International Education. - Each Fellow will hold the position of Visiting Professor, Visiting Associate Professor, or Visiting Assistant Professor at Waseda University, depending on the rank held at his or her home institution. 6. Compensation and Benefits - A stipend of JPY 240,000 per month for living expenses plus a teaching salary (at a minimum of JPY 110,200 per month for two classes) will be paid to the Fellow. *Utilities fees, JPY34,000 per month, will be deducted from the stipend during the period of the Fellow’s stay. - Fellows and their immediate family members will be given priority listing for accommodations owned by Waseda University. No accommodation fees will be charged. - Fellows will be provided with a single, economy class round-trip plane ticket. - Each Fellow will have use of a private office. - Research support services, as needed, will be provided by Waseda’s International Affairs Division. 7. Use of Waseda Libraries Fellows will be able to use the Waseda University Center for Scholarly Information. They are welcome to make use of any and all of its library collections (with borrowing privileges), archives, and other scientific and scholarly resources. 8. Accommodation Fellows will be given priority for staying in researchers' housing of Waseda University. All units are fully furnished and are located within a 15-minute walk of the main campus. Health Insurance Fellows are requested to obtain travel & health insurance designated by his/her home institution prior to departure from their home country. Fellows with resident status for at least 1 year, are required to enroll in the Japanese National Health Insurance Scheme. The premiums for this are the responsibility of the Fellow. 70% of medical expenses will be covered under the Japanese National Health Insurance Scheme. Professor’s visa Fellows must obtain a professor’s visa in order to engage in activities at Waseda. Waseda will act as a proxy to apply for Certificate of Eligibility (Professor) at Tokyo Immigration Bureau, which normally requires 1 to 2 months to process requests for issuance of the certificates. Fellows will then be able to obtain a visa by submitting their Certificate of Eligibility to an embassy or consulate of Japan together with other necessary documentation. Fellows are requested to submit to Waseda the Visa Application. 11. Application Procedure Applications will first be submitted to the facilitating office at each institution, typically that of Provost or Dean of Faculty. Should more than one application be received for any given academic year, the head of the facilitating office will select the application to be submitted to Waseda. (see the attached designated form) - A research proposal, including, as appropriate, the name of a Waseda faculty member who might serve as research collaborator during the period of the Fellowship. (Waseda’s International Affairs Division can be helpful in suggesting appropriate faculty to serve as research collaborators.)- Two letters of recommendation, one from the appropriate Dean (or higher official) at the applicant’s home institution, the other from an expert in the applicant’s field of research (either at or outside of his or her institution). -Visa Application Sheet 12. Applicant Screening - After all documents have been received at Waseda, applications will be screened and successful candidates chosen. Notification of the results will be sent to the facilitating office of the applicant’s home institution and to the successful applicant. 13.
