Most of us have gears we never use. - Charles M. Schulz Well, my term as President is almost over. I want to express my gratitude again to all Committee Chairs, CoChairs and members of each Committee. Without you, my job would have been very difficult. I am so impressed with your dedication, assistance, and timeliness in getting everything to me on time. You truly deserve the credit in assuring this Association runs, and runs smoothly and efficiently. This Association would not be possible without you. I came across this quote below and wanted to share it. “No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself or get all the credit for doing it.” Andrew Carnegie In allowing me to be your President, it has taught me many things. One of the many things that stick in my mind is the responsibility to not only myself, but to others. People look up to you and expect certain behavior. It makes you accountable and being accountable to others makes you more aware of others expectations. It has reminded me of the old saying: “Don’t do anything you wouldn’t want someone else to do.” Also, you should lead by example. It is true that everyone is watching and therefore the decisions that you make effect not only you, but everyone you are trying to lead. “Leadership, is about taking responsibility, not making excuses.” Mitt Romney I want to thank this Association for giving me this opportunity to learn and grow. I have enjoyed leading this Association and look forward to seeing everyone at Convention in Roanoke. The Nominating Committee looks forward to conducting the elections at the VALS Annual Convention in Roanoke. February 6th, we hosted a mock trial at Spotsylvania Circuit Court. FALSA, Attorney Ghislaine Storr Burks and Attorney Jennifer Parrish teamed up to conduct a Mock Trial Presentation. Attorney Storr Burks’ University of Mary Washington Mock Trial Team prepared an interesting and informative litigation experience. Attorney Parrish was wonderful as our presiding judge. Local High Schools were invited to attend for extra credit, education, and a bit of fun. The night was a success! Don’t Forget!! For more information, contact Robin Wilson. NVLSA will elect their officers at the annual meeting in April. We look forward to attending the Annual Meeting in Roanoke, Virginia and seeing all our VALS Gals. See you soon!!!! NPALSA Leslie A. Thibeault, Governor Things are mostly back to normal after the holidays. NPALSA continues to participate in CLE and community activities. We encourage our members to invite guests to our monthly meetings, and we discuss membership with co-workers. In September we took a portion of a certification exam. In October representative from Swiftwing Express, LLC, Certified Process Servers and Legal Couriers spoke to our members. In November we had no speaker. In December we had our holiday party at Waterman’s Surfside Grill and then drove on the boardwalk to see the “McDonald’s Holiday Lights at the Beach” display. Our fundraising efforts also continue with Avon and Popcorn Palace. Popcorn Palace was so successful the first time we did it, that we’re doing it again! In February, NPALSA and VBLSA will be co-hosting the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office at the Regent University School of Law as they present a Mock Jury Trial. The charge is murder! We’ll report the outcome in the next newsletter. Spring Issue 2012/2013 The VALS News Prince William County Association for Legal Professionals Mary Stewart, Governor Our chapter has been quiet since the holidays. Two of us braved the weather and attended the January meeting in Richmond. We enjoyed hearing from the former JAG office and learning what the Attorney General’s office is really about. We look forward to spring and coming to Roanoke for more education and fellowship. Page 7 by a brief town meeting and the board meeting in the afternoon. If you were unable to attend, I certainly hope you’ll plan on attending the annual meeting at the Holiday Inn Tanglewood, April 26-28, in Roanoke (with a hospitality preview on the evening of the 25th). Those gals are really planning a terrific weekend for us! Since our last report, RLSA, like all of you, has maneuvered through the holidays. We attended a holiday dinner meeting in December and held a business meeting in January. With luck and preparation, we hope to get busy in the coming months with new meeting programs and with attempts to recruit new members. As community service projects, RLSA contributed money to a NALS and a VALS sister to help defray expenses they incurred from Hurricane Sandy losses. It is horrifying to continue to discover how devastating this storm has been to folks. Sometimes we just never suspect how close to home the damage hits. RLSA looks forward to attending the annual meeting in Roanoke, in April. We hope to see most of you there! RVLSA…the association for legal professionals Cathy S. Freeman, PLS, Governor RLSA…the association for legal professionals Greetings from the Roanoke Valley! RVLSA RVLSA is in high gear getting ready and making final preparations for convention. Even so, we continue to hold monthly board meetings and our monthly membership meetings to include our legal education. We had our Christmas Social at the home of honorary member Cathy Caddy (who is also the Roanoke Bar Association’s Executive Director) and those in attendance enjoyed an evening filled with lots of laughter, games, yummy food brought in by our members, and beverage (don’t want to forget the beverage - I think the general consensus would agree to re-categorizing the “rum balls” Shana made as a “beverage”! Hahaha!!) and did I mention lots of laughter? In addition to the socializing, we provided Christmas gifts and gift cards for a family whose home had recently burned down (and was personally acquainted with one of our members that went to their church). Elaine G. Blackmon, Governor We’ve just attended the VALS Winter seminar and Board of Governors meeting at the Wyndham Richmond Airport. It was certainly fun to catch up with many of you, there. We had some really good speakers, followed During this year, we have raised almost $3,500 by selling candy, Yankee Candles, using our Kroger cards, and selling tickets for our raffle baskets at VALS meetings. Many thanks to the efforts of our Ways and Means Chair, Dawn Nichols, PLS and to our membership for all their Spring Issue 2012/2013 The VALS News hard work and efforts in each of these fundraising projects. We did not work at the Roanoke Civic Center this year, but we were still able to keep funds coming in thanks to Dawn’s dedication, and to our members’ hard work and participation. We continue to assist with registration for monthly Roanoke Bar Association meetings and other RBA functions as requested. We took on the additional task of handling the registration for the newly formed Federal Bar Association in the Roanoke Valley which has only been together for the past year. Through the contributions of our members, RVLSA continues to participate in many community projects throughout the year. We made our annual donation of Teddy Bears collected at our Day in Court Mock Trial to the local police departments (I believe the total teddy bears collected was 75 or 85? somewhere in that range), we sent a huge care package over to my nephew and his army platoon while he spent the past 8 months in Kandahar, Afghanistan. We filled Christmas stockings through the Salvation Army, collected items for the SPCA, and donated items to the IHN/Turning Point shelter; Naturally, as we trudge through the first half of 2013, RVLSA’s main focus has turned to finalizing plans for the VALS 51st Annual Convention. This will definitely be a weekend you won’t want to miss (nor was Melinda’s address to the membership at Winter Board regarding Friday night’s goings on – absolutely hysterical!) so, please, make your plans now to join us the weekend of April 25-28, 2013. We will celebrate with Kelly as she winds down a triumphant achievement as VALS 50th President and passes the gavel on to Heather. Heather is known by all as warm and giving, cheerful, and always there to help lend a hand. We look forward to walking with her through this journey this next year as VALS 51st President. With Heather at the helm we know it will be an inspirational year for all. And remember, “you only get out of it what you put in to it” so please consider saying yes to working on a committee when you get that call. Best wishes to our VALS sisters for a wonderful and warm spring. We look forward to seeing you all in just a few short months! Page 8 Virginia Beach Legal Staff Association VIRGINIA BEACH LEGAL STAFF ASSOCIATION Visit our website at www.vblsa.org Caroline Adler, PP, PLS, Governor Hello from the Beach. I am now back at work and recovering from hip replacement surgery – sorry that I wasn’t able to attend the Winter Board but I was still spending most of my time napping! We have had several interesting speakers since the last reporting. In November, Sally Haynes, CPA, spoke on tax issues; it was very enlightening! We had our holiday party and ornament exchange in December, 2012, and collecting food items for the VBCPS Beach Bags program. In January, Andrae Via, Esquire, presented “Magnifying Hidden Dangers by Using Title and Survey.” I understand it was a very interesting and informative presentation (I wasn’t able to attend). We are looking forward to our Day-in-Court on Monday, February 11, 2013, which will be held jointly with NPLSA. We will be attending a mock jury trial at Regent University. As a reminder, we are still selling VBLSA cookbooks for $12 each, two for $20.00, and will bring them to future VALS gatherings.
