“JUSTICE FOR MIGRANT FARMERS”
Thursday, September 10, 2015
Time: 10:00 am
Woodstock Town Hall Theatre
Grades 5-12
Performance: 60 minutes
Curriculum Connections: Music,
Mexican Culture, Social Studies,
Agriculture, Immigration Reform
Masterfully blending elements of jazz, classical, rock, and Mexican folk music in their original
compositions, the Villalobos brothers deliver a powerful message of love, brotherhood and
social justice. Brothers Ernesto, Alberto, and Luis Villalobos are three highly accomplished
violinists from Veracruz Mexico, and along with guitarist Humberto Flores, drummer Rosa
Avila, and bassist Leo Sherman, they have brought their inspiring songs to music halls around
the world. Acclaimed as one of today’s leading Contemporary Mexican ensembles and one
of the best bands in New York, (2013 winner of NPR’s Battle of the Burroughs) the Villalobos
Brothers offer a dynamic and inspiring performance wherever they play.
Along with their concert, a presentation will include themes of Mexican culture, and the
power of practice in our lives. How long does it take to learn a skill and how can this
discipline impact other parts of our lives? What is culture? What do people bring with them
when they leave home? There is a large community of Mexican migrant workers in Vermont
on dairy farms, and in agriculture all over the country. What makes them leave home, and
what are their struggles in the US? Students will learn about the Migrant Justice movement in
Vermont and their Milk With Dignity Campaign.

MY HEART IN A SUITCASE

Woodstock Town Hall Theatre
Grades 4-8
Performance: 55 minutes
Curriculum Connections: Family Relationships, Historical,
Literature-Based, Values-Based
ArtsPower National Touring Theatre’s production of My
Heart in a Suitcase is based on the autobiography written
by Kindertransport survivor Anne Lehmann Fox. While every
student in America learns about World War II, not many people
remember the Kindertransport. In 1938 and 1939, 10,000
Jewish children living in Nazi occupied Germany, Poland,
Czechoslovakia, and Austria were permitted to leave their homes, via the Kindertransport,
in order to find safe haven in England just prior to the outbreak of World War II. They were
forced to leave behind their parents, their homes, and everything they knew and loved;
most of them would never see their mothers and fathers again. Anne Lehmann Fox was one
of those 10,000 children. She left on the Kindertransport in December of 1938, when she
was just 12 years old. Years later, she would record her experiences in the book entitled,
My Heart in a Suitcase.

Theatreworks’ The Lightning Thief is a musical adapted from the
book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, featuring script by Joe
Tracz with music, lyrics & orchestrations by Rob Rokicki.
Percy Jackson is about to be kicked out of boarding school...again. And that’s the least of
his troubles. Lately, mythological monsters and the gods of Mount Olympus seem to be
walking straight out of the pages of Percy’s Greek mythology textbook and into his life. And
worse, he’s angered a few of them. Zeus’s master lightning bolt has been stolen and Percy
is the prime suspect.
Now Percy has ten days to find and return Zeus’s stolen property and bring peace to a
warring Mount Olympus. But to succeed on his quest, Percy will have to do more than
catch the true thief: he must come to terms with the father who abandoned him; solve the
riddle of the Oracle, which warns him of betrayal by a friend; and unravel a treachery more
powerful than the gods themselves.
