the Old Field Club. Norman H. Edelman, MD, President of the Medical Board, Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice President of the Health Sciences Center,
conducted the business meeting.

Other developments in the past year include:
JCAHO conducted its triennial site visit and we
received a score of 95.
The Stony Brook University Hospital Cancer Care Program has received approval from the Commission on
Cancer of the American College of Surgeons as a
teaching hospital level approved program. This is only
awarded to 20% of hospitals nationwide and Stony
Brook is the only institution in Suffolk County to earn
this award.
A MPH professional track is available to physicians who want
to improve their knowledge and earn an additional degree.
The 30th convocation of the medical school was celebrated this past year. The speaker was Edmund D.
Pellegrino, founder of HSC and winner of the University
Medal awarded by the Stony Brook Trustees. We now
have 172 Stony Brook medical school graduates on
our faculty.
Stony Brook initiated the creation of a Tissue Bank to
support the cancer program.

Report from
Director and CEO
Bruce Schroffel, Director and CEO,
presented the strategic goals and
the master facilities plan for the
hospital.
The 5-year strategic goals include enhancement of
quality and safety programs, the implementation of an
electronic patient record system, improved patient satisfaction and service excellence, improved long-term
financial stability and implementation of the major modernization plan (MMP).
Continued on page 2
Continued
from cover
The 5-year major modernization plan includes plans for
equipment replacement and hospital infrastructure as
well as hospital expansion and renovation. Physician
recruitment is also a major part of the master plan.
Expansion and renovation will be seen
with the new heart center, relocation of
the helipad and Emergency Department parking facilities. Most road
changes are expected to be completed
by July 2005 and the construction of
an Ambulatory Care Pavilion is scheduled for completion in early 2006. The
65,000 sq. ft. Ambulatory Care Pavilion
will be located adjacent to the Ambulatory Surgery Center and will integrate
cancer clinical services to improve
patient access and continuity of care.
The building will house the Long Island
Cancer Center (including the Carol M.
Baldwin Breast Care Center), outpatient medical and surgical oncology
services, outpatient pediatric oncology
services and cancer support services.
The Pavilion will also include a state-ofthe-art outpatient imaging center and
pain management services. Also
included in the MMP is a renovated and expanded
Emergency Department, new and remodeled Operating
Rooms, a new main entrance and lobby as well as a
new Women’s and Infants’ Center.
Keynote
Speaker
Our keynote speaker was Troyen
Brennan, MD, JD, MPH, Professor
of Law and Public Health and Director of the Program of Law
and Public Health at the
Harvard Medical School and a physician at the
Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston,
where he is President of the Brigham and
Women’s Physician Organization. Dr. Brennan’s research interests concern legal and ethical issues in medicine and public health. He
is a regularly invited author for the New England Journal of Medicine.

explored the relationship between
safety and malpractice.

JCAHO NEWS
JCAHO will be using the Tracer Methodology
when conducting future site visits. This Methodology, which replaces the traditional unit visits,
follows the course of a patient’s care from the
time of entry to the hospital, across the continuum of care, wherever service was rendered.
For example a patient who enters through the ER
will be “traced” to every area of the hospital that
provided care or services, i.e., ED - Unit - Radiology - Operative Services - Pharmacy - and other
supporting disciplines such as Respiratory Care.
There are four types of tracers
1.
Patient Care
2.
Medication
3.
Infection Control
4.

COMPLAINTS ---SUGGESTIONS
In an effort to improve communication between
physicians and hospital administration, the hospital has instituted a Physician Complaint/Suggestion Program, which will be administered by
the Medical Staff Office.
While the Patient/Guest Relations Department
remains the first course of action for circumstances regarding patient situations, the program
has been created to address other situations.
For example, if you have a complaint or
suggestion regarding a system process, a
computer system, the hospital webpage, parking,
cafeteria, communication, etc., this program is
the forum to address your concerns.
While we may not be able to resolve every issue,
we can assure you that we will bring your issues
to the attention of the appropriate party and we
will make every effort to address and resolve
your concern.

There are three ways to access this program:

Approximately 25% of Stony Brook’s 2004
medical graduates matched with Stony Brook
University Hospital residency programs.
Nov. 6
163 residents and fellows attended an orientation program prior to beginning their residencies/fellowships on July 1. In response to
suggestions from the 2003 incoming residents,
the orientation program included a hands-on
hospital computer training session. This year
the residents were required to complete part of
the orientation program on-line. Several
departments and services created presentations
which were available on the internet. Once
completed, residents were able to send
electronic attestations to the Medical/House
Staff Office. As a result of the on-line program,
100% of all residents were trained in various
modules. This information will remain available
on line as a reference source for the house staff.
