Walker Elder William H. Walker II, Senior Pastor His Grace The Most Reverend Keith Wright Officiating His Grace The Most Reverend J. Raymond Mackey I, Homilist Biography / Obituary Bishop William H. Walker, Sr. His Grace, Bishop William H. Walker, Sr., founder of Amityville Full Gospel Tabernacle, went home to be with the Lord on November 3, 2008. He was called from his earthly labor to his home in glory at the North Shore Long Island Jewish Hospital in the Cohen Pavilion wing (translated as Priest – in Hebrew). William H. Walker was born to the late Henry and Ruth Walker in Corona, New York on April 25, 1930. He graduated from Jamaica High School in New York City. He enlisted and served in the United States Air Force in 1947 and received an honorable discharge in January 1952 as a Sergeant. After accepting the Lord in February 1953, he attended Bethel Gospel Tabernacle. There he met and married the lovely Beatrice Ellis on March 12, 1955. From this union there are four children, Deon, Melanie, Wesley, and William, II. He was a dedicated husband and a loving father. His family could always count on him. He was employed by Brooklyn Union Gas Company for thirty years. In 1991 he retired at the level of Master General Foreman and went into full time ministry. Elder Walker attended and graduated from Bethel Bible Institute in 1957. In November 1960 he was divinely directed by the late Bishop Roderick R. Caesar, Sr. to lead Sunday School and Wednesday night prayer meetings in Amityville in the home of Mother Augusta Spencer. The ministry began to grow rapidly. The first Sunday morning service took place in the “Old Fire House” on Rosewood Avenue, with Elder William H. Walker and other ministers preaching on alternating Sundays. In September 1961, under the direction of Bishop Roderick R. Caesar, Sr., Elder William Walker was installed as the permanent Pastor of Amityville Gospel Tabernacle. The property was later purchased and regular services were conducted in a renovated two car garage. Elder Walker was known for his heart for evangelistic outreach. The ministry quickly became characterized by its powerful tent meetings and street outreach services. In 1971, God called his brother-in-law William Johnson, who was a building contractor, to spearhead the building of the current edifice. The groundbreaking ceremony was conducted on Saturday, March 27, 1971. Finally on November 25, 1973 the building was completed and dedicated. In 1981 the church was incorporated as Amityville Full Gospel Tabernacle. After 37 years of ministry, God elevated Elder Walker to the office of Bishop. He was consecrated on March 28, 1998. He graciously occupied the office, bringing guidance and leadership to many ministries including Ebenezer Gospel Church in Gates, North Carolina, under the leadership of Elders James and Audrey Sanders. His influence was extended to many churches locally, across the country, and internationally. Bishop Walker was a prolific teacher and preacher who trained and equipped hundreds of people for the ministry and witnessed the raising up of pastors, evangelists, missionaries, and dedicated workers across the globe. He lived a life of integrity and was known as a powerful man of God who was humble but fearless, quiet but powerful, unassuming but a great and unique vessel of the Lord. His passion was always to reach the lost and to stand in the gap as a mighty intercessor. Bishop Walker was retired from the full time Pastorate in March 2004, but continued as the Bishop and Overseer of Amityville Full Gospel Tabernacle along with his wife Elder Beatrice Walker, who served faithfully by his side. His sons, William H. Walker, II, who is currently the Pastor and Wesley Walker the Minister of Music, also faithfully assisted him in the ministry. Bishop Walker was involved in the Ministerial Alliance of North Amityville, H.E.V.N. (a community alliance against gang violence), and other community based organizations.
