PSU Final Exams Schedule Research For the Term 122- Academic Year ’12 - ‘13 Adeel Umer 5/12/2013 A. Umer PSU Term 122 final exams: 13 days, 125 exams and 4788 examinees. Intro On 21-April-2013, the Prince Sultan University (PSU) admin updated on their website, the latest version of the Final Exams schedule for the semester 122 of the academic year 2012-2013. I looked it up in search for the exam date for my only course Com 301. I noticed that there was a hidden column on the sheet that showed the number of students sitting for each exam. The person who uploaded the schedule, had just hidden the “number of students” column instead of deleting it. So, with many numbers at hand I went about doing a simple analysis on the schedule to find out a few interesting facts. The Purpose The real purpose of this research that I have conducted is because I had data which can be used to draw some interesting conclusions. However, I must state that the data used in this report comes only from the Exam Schedule published on the website. Therefore, as I might have already understood, the data is not reliable. I have used no other source for this research. I must also state that the estimations in this report are my own and henceforth, may be very far away from real. The Basics To begin with, I am going to state the most basic facts that were evident from the first look. The Final exams would start from 19th May 2013 and would end on 2nd June 2013. A total of 125 exams would take place over a period of 13 days, with a total of 4788 examinees taking part. 2 A. Umer An unrealistic stat shows that on Average there will be about 39 students per course. The reason for this is the large outlying data. While some courses, namely MATH002 will see up to 191 students, other courses such as IS336 is expected to have only 1 student and the number for MATH001 is simply blank, which is highly unlikely. The Timings On the whole, 53 exams, involving 2379 examinees, will be held in the morning hours before 12pm, making up nearly 49.7%. While another 50.3%, 2409 examinees, will appear for the 72 exams set to be held after 1pm. This shows a very well balanced schedule in terms of the timing! Exam Timings - PSU Final Exams, Term 122 Morning 50.3% 49.7% 3 Afternoon A. Umer The Big Ones After some detailed research, I had enough info to come up with some big numbers. However, I must reemphasize that my numbers are only estimates that may be far away from the real number, as my source is not very reliable. By putting everything together, I came up with an estimate that puts the total number of students in PSU at a number close to 3000. Assuming that, I can estimate that 29% of the student in PSU are enrolled in PYP(Preparatory Year Program), while another 28% took the General courses. As per Colleges, College of Business Administration (CBA) is the largest college in PSU with approximately 20% of the students, followed by College of Computer & Information Sciences (CCIS) with 10% students. The remaining students are from Computer Science and Engineering. Students, PSU Courses - Term 122 1000 900 800 700 600 500 400 300 200 100 0 PYP 4 General Courses CBA CCIS English Engineering A. Umer Students, PSU Colleges Term 122 English 10% Engineering 3% PYP 29% CCIS 10% CBA 20% General Courses 28% The Conclusion In conclusion, it can be asserted that the findings of this research are very much in line with the general perceptions. It is widely known that CBA is the biggest college in PSU and that PSU is growing with many new students enrolling in PYP each year. It was therefore, no surprise to see similar results in my research. However, as I have previously emphasized, the source is not very reliable so the research may be of no real use to anyone. by Adeel Umer 5 A.
