Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in MAC 1140 and MAC 1114 or MAC 1147. Topics include circle and parabola, limits and continuity, derivatives of algebraic and trigonometric forms, applications of derivatives, definite and indefinite integral. Gordon Rule course. Minimum grade of C required if MAC 2311 is used to satisfy the Gordon Rule and general education requirements.

Attendance :

The student will be responsible for obtaining and doing any assignment that is made during their absence. The assignments will be posted on Blackboard at https://online.valenciacollege.edu/ . If a scheduled test is missed, the test score will be the lowest score and treated as described in the Grading section below. If a student realizes in advance that he/she has a conflict with a scheduled test, please contact the instructor and it may be possible to schedule the test for an earlier time. If you do not contact the instructor prior to the test, then there will be no make up test given.

Absolutely no make-ups of quizzes will be given . A student who misses more than three consecutive classes without discussing their situation with the instructor is subject to withdrawal.

Homework:

The assignments will be posted on Blackboard at https://online.valenciacollege.edu/ . Look under

“Content” on the far left. Each day the first part of the class period will be spent working in groups discussing questions about the homework assignment. To be successful in the class(and so your group mates don’t want to seriously maim you) it is important to set aside time between each class meeting to work on the assignment . Groups will be assigned by the instructor in an effort to maximize the benefits to all group members.

Tardiness:

Being late to class, leaving early, or leaving and returning, is a disruption to the class and is discourteous to the professor and the other students. All students are expected to be on time to class and to stay for the entire class period. Please inform the instructor if you know you will need to leave the class early.

Withdrawal Deadlines :

Students who do not attend class at least once by September 5 th class as a “No Show.”

2014 will be withdrawn from the

November 7, 2014 is the last day to withdraw and receive a "W" grade. After that date a student is not allowed to withdraw from the class. A student may be withdrawn by the instructor up to the beginning of the final exam period for violating the attendance policy. A student who withdraws or is withdrawn from a class during their third or subsequent attempt in the same course will be assigned a grade of “F”. No withdrawals can be made after December 7, 2014.

It is not the responsibility of the faculty member to withdraw any and all students that have excessive absences, so please do not assume you will be withdrawn automatically. If you have extenuating circumstances that cause excessive absences and the withdrawal deadline has passed, please contact your instructor prior to the final exam period to discuss this issue further.

Chapter 3, 5.2, 5.3

Final Exam will be Monday December 8, 1:00 – 3:30

Grading :

11/10

12/3

Grades will be based upon four in class exams, a quiz average, and a comprehensive final exam.

Each of the class exams will count 100 points, the quiz average will count 100 points and the final exam will count 100 points. The highest 80% of the quizzes will be counted. For each unit, one quiz grade will be given for class participation(See below). The final exam score may replace the lowest test score, but the quiz average can not be replaced or any grades assigned because of cheating.

Zeros will be recorded for all missed quizzes and tests. Letter grades will be assigned according to the percentage earned using the scale 90 to 100% is an A, 80 to 89 is a B, 70 to 79 is a C, 60-69 is a D.

Grades will be posted and viewed in WebGrade. Each time you have a new grade to view, an email will be sent to your ATLAS email with your login information and a link to the WebGrade site. For more information, watch a video about using WebGrade. You can find a link to this on the course webpage in Blackboard.

Class Participation Cards

For each unit, each student will be given a CP card. It is the student’s responsibility to bring their CP card to class each day. Stamps will be awarded in class and for various other activities. Each stamp is worth one point. Each unit will have a different amount of points possible depending on the activities assigned during the unit. Points will be given for board work(turns to be taken within each group), insightful comments/questions, participation in your HW group, posting a helpful website on the BB discussion board with a reflection, a 10 out of 10 on a quiz, turning in quiz corrections, getting an A on a test or improving your test grade by a letter grade and for other outstanding behavior. Two points will be given for perfect attendance within the unit, one point for only missing once. Points will be taken away for not participating fully in group work, repeated instances of not being prepared for the HW group discussion, coming late, leaving early, having your cell phone out on the desk, or other disruptive classroom behavior. Points earned above the base points will be given as extra credit points on the exam for that unit up to 5 extra credit points.

Calculator

A graphing calculator is required for the course. The TI-83, TI-84, TI 89, or Voyage 200 will be used by the instructor but a TI-82, 86,85, 89, 92 or Inspire will also be acceptable. Storing notes, formulas, problems, etc. in the calculator is considered cheating. The instructor reserves the right to inspect the memory of the student's calculator at any time during the semester. If inappropriate information is found stored in the calculator during a quiz or test, the student will receive a 0 on that quiz or test.

Cell Phones:

Cell phones are a distraction! Students should turn the ringer off on all electronic devices and

THEY SHOULD NOT BE IN SIGHT . There should be no texting or talking on your phone during class time.

Academic Honesty :

All forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited at Valencia. Academic dishonesty included, but is not limited to, plagiarism, cheating, furnishing false information, forgery, alteration or misuse of documents, misconduct during a testing situation, and misuse of identification with intent to defraud or deceive.

Sanctions available to the professor should a violation occur are described in the Valencia Student

Handbook or online at http://valencia.college.edu/policies/PDF/10-16.pdf

The professor will determine which sanction(s) is appropriate for the specific situation.

Students with Disabilities

"Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide a notification from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and discuss specific needs with the instructor, preferably during the first two weeks of class. The Office for Students with

Disabilities determines accommodations based on appropriate documentation of disabilities. The

East Campus Office is located in Building 5, Room 216."
