At the 2003 Employee Awards Assembly, La Vega began the practice of awarding the ball to an individual or group who have made an impact on getting things done to help move LVISD toward the “goal line.” The LVISD Child Nutrition Department was selected this year because they have embraced the federal and state nutritional guideline changes made during the last couple of years and successfully implemented two new federal programs allowing all of La Vega students to eat free breakfast and lunch and provide a free afternoon meal for our after school ACE and tutored students. Bookmobile…Sailing into Summer Reading La Vega ISD is hosting a community bookmobile this summer. The bookmobile will make stops with books available for checkout in conjunction with the La Vega ISD Lunch Bus Express on Thursdays through July 30. The Bookmobile will be at the following locations: Concord Baptist Church 4412 Concord & Crockett Street 10:30 to 11 a.m. La Vega Community Church 1000 Ashleman & Latimer 11:10 to 11:40 a.m. OakLawn Baptist Church 2105 Behren Cr. & Queen Ct. 11:50 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. Brame Park Oak Grove Dr. & Shelton St. 12:30 to 1 p.m. All community members, ages birth through adult, are invited to come on board to select books from our lending library. Books should be returned to the bookmobile at the reader’s convenience. La Vega ISD is committed to the mission of utilizing all resources to provide learning opportunities, tools, progressive technology and guidance to enable all students to become productive citizens and life-long learners. Each school year, when we return from summer vacation, we notice a decline in our student reading levels from the end of the previous school year. The research is clear that children who do not read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect. In an effort to combat reading loss, we will be supplying books at all levels for summer reading. This is an opportunity for our entire community to be part of the solution to the summer reading loss problem. The mobile lending library will operate on the honor system, whereby no penalties or fines will be assessed for lost or overdue books. The purpose of the bookmobile is to keep books in the hands of our students and to cultivate a culture of literacy in our community. We are hoping that families will come on board to choose books together. We have been blessed by donations from community members, area churches, and LVISD faculty and staff members to supply our bookmobile with gently used books. This effort has truly become a labor of love! We hope you will join in the fun as we kick off our La Vega ISD Bookmobile.
