BELLMEAD’S HAVING A BOOMING ELECTION ON MAY 10. Every
year three of the six
Council seats are open
for candidates to run to
serve on the City Council.
On odd years, residents may vote if the
seat is open for their
precinct. On even years,
everyone can vote for
the at-large position and
some can also vote for
their precinct. This year,
everyone gets to vote
because we have a challenger for the at-large
position. Does your one
vote count? You bet it
does.
In the Bellmead City
Council election of 2012,
an election in a tie for
two candidates. One additional vote on either
side would have won the
election! So be sure to
get involved and VOTE
VOTE VOTE.
BELLMEAD MEANS
BUSINESS.
The March City Council meeting on March 11
began with a prayer by
Pastor Ronnie Holmes
of Church of the Open
Door and a Pledge of Allegiance to our nation’s
flag.
We had a large audience present and several citizens and business
owners spoke about
items on the agenda.
Reports included information about the Texas
Department of Transportation beginning the land
purchases for the right
of way on the expansion
of Interstate 35. Land in
Bellmead is expected to
be purchased starting in
about four to six months.
This is a $320 million
project and it is still not
yet funded. The regular
agenda went as follows:
• We h a d a g o o d
discussion about the
trailer ordinance, which
we were expecting to
modify to allow a grandfather clause for businesses that had trailers
before the ordinance was
passed. A three-to-three
vote was taken thus no
changes were made to
the ordinance this month
either. It will probably
be re-visited again in an
upcoming meeting.
• The Council accepted a bid from Hoyt
Breathing Air Products
to provide service and
maintenance for our
air breathing devices
used by our emergency
response personnel in
the Fire Department.
This important service
is recommended by the
National Fire Protection
Association.
• We voted to accept
the bid on city-owned
property with the requirement that the buyer must
build a building to house
new businesses on the
property within a set period of time. The bid
amount that was accepted is for $8,100.
This additional revenue
will be added to the city’s
general revenue fund
and put to good use in
the future.
• We had a long and
heated debate in regards
to our current mobile
home ordinance.
Some members of
Council would like to
modify or repeal the ordinance and authorize
the placement of mobile
homes throughout the
city.
Others feel this violates
the harmonious structure
that most cities have and
would lower the value of
property and discourage
new businesses.
It was also pointed out
that the Comprehensive
Plan that Council adopted in 2012 indicated
that the citizens actually
targeted mobile homes
as something that they
did not want to see more
of in Bellmead.
In the end, no change
was made to the ordinance. However, it will
most likely be brought up
again in a future meeting
very soon.
• The Council went into
executive session to deliberate the appointment
of a new city attorney.
There were three firms
that applied and after reviewing the qualifications
one was selected. We
would like to welcome
Charlie Buenger and
Associates as our new
legal team for the City of
Bellmead. This change
will likely also mean a
change for our municipal
judge, who happens to
also be an attorney for
Buenger and Associates.
Remember, city elections will be May 10.
Everyone can vote this
year because of the atlarge position being challenged. Please take the
time to get to know your
Council representative
and the challenger and
make an informed vote
for the person of your
choice.
Have a Beautiful day in
Bellmead!

Meet the Candidates
At-Large
Gary Moore (Incumbent)
Moore has lived in Bellmead all of
his life. He has served on the council for one term. He works in the
collections and deliveries industry.
Moore wants to continue to maintain low taxes and provide responsible government to the citizens.
In the next five years, he would
like to see low property taxes,
infrastructure improvements, full
disclosure and transparency in city
government and to continue the
support of Baylor Research & Innovation Collaborative (BRIC).
Lisa Morales
Morales is a registered certified
medical assistant and has been in
the Bellmead area since the first
grade.
She said she would like to serve
Bellmead in order to better parks
and other areas for the future generations and include all the children
in the community. This includes the
baseball fields and all of the parks.
She also suggests evening activities for area children and their
families.
Precinct 3
Danny R. Lechler
Lechler has lived in Bellmead
for 20 years and is retired from the
mobile factories industry.
Lechler said he wants to serve
Bellmead to help improve the community with new businesses and
parks for children.
In the next five years, Lechler said
he hopes to bring more money to
Bellmead making it a better place
for future generations so that they
choose to stay.
He also wants to encourage parks
and places for family gatherings.
He is particularly proud of the water
park off of Hogan Lane. He said he
believes it’s important for parks to
have a ramp with barbecue grills for
picnics and handicap accessibility
for the elderly and disabled.
He said that he would like to see
Bellmead grow, repair the roads and
bring new businesses here.
Mathew R. Jordon
Jordon has lived in Bellmead
since 1965, except for a couple of
years when he lived elsewhere. He
has been retired since 1997 from
fire and rescue in the Air Force.
Jordan said he wants Bellmead
to be a family town and he would
like to see buildings fixed up instead of tearing them down. He
said would like to see Bellmead be
a place where families can have
outings like they have in McGregor.
He said he wants to retain downtown Bellmead, even though many
businesses are gravitating toward
Loop 340. He said he would like to
see another fire station behind the
Church of the Open Door or across
from the Holiday Inn. He also said
some of the roads needs to be fixed
as a future goal for Bellmead.
U. F. Roberts (Incumbent)
Roberts was born in Streetman,
Texas, and was a farmer and machinist before joining the U.S. Air
Force in 1966.
He worked for General Tire and
operated several businesses in
Bellmead. He said he wants to the
Council to make good decisions
based on sound judgment and
common sense and the city to be
managed by designed rather than
by crisis.
He suggests that issues coming
before the Council are explored and
weighed. He said he feels strongly
about education and activities
geared toward young people.
Jose R. Arrollo Jr.
Arrollo has lived in Bellmead
since 1967. He served in the Texas
Army National Guard for 12 years
and worked at Fleetwood Homes for
more than 20 years. He also worked
in retail and construction. He said
he would like to see some positive
changes in Bellmead with hope for
growth and improvement. He wants
to attract major businesses for more
opportunities.
He said he envisions Bellmead
as a thriving community that will
attract people who want to live here
and raise their families. He believes
more activities for younger age
groups would be beneficial.

PM PM PM PM Emergency notification system provides reverse 911
The Heart of Texas Regional Emergency
Notification System is offered by the Heart
of Texas Council of Governments, along
with local counties and cities. An emergency
notification system, or a reverse 911 system, gives local emergency management,
public safety and governmental jurisdictions
a chance to inform the public in case of an
emergency incident or public threat.
This phone and email system is designed to provide emergency messages
to the public quickly and effectively. Types
of events that may require messages are
natural disasters such as fires, floods, severe
weather; man-made disasters such as bomb
threats, hazardous material incidents, terrorism threats; evacuation notices and criminal
threats; and public health threats such as boil
water notices and health alerts.
People may still call 911 for emergency
requests. Reverse 911 provides a means to
disseminate critical information to the public via a mass notification system when the
need arises. Contact information is needed
to ensure people can be reached when emergency messages are sent by local officials.
The database of land line telephone numbers registered in the Heart of Texas region
is constantly being updated.
Since many individuals do not have a land
line phone, the system is interested in obtaining cell phone numbers, email addresses and
Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) phone
numbers.
Citizens are encouraged to register at
HOTReady.com.
