Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery is very pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by nationallyacclaimed artist, John Hartman. Cities is an exhibition of 40 paintings depicting (mostly) aerial views of cities across Canada and elsewhere including New York, Glasgow, London, Halifax, St. John’s, Toronto and Vancouver. The paintings are semi-abstract. They identify key routes, patterns and landmarks and combine this with a sense of the history and culture. There are a number of sketchbooks and watercolour studies that we can discuss regarding the artist’s working process which we can apply to our local geography. We are inviting classes in your school to visit the gallery for a tour and then participate in a watercolour painting activity based on the tour and which is geared to the appropriate grade level. The overall tour and project will take approximately 1 ¼ hour. All materials are free. Alternatively, we are happy to give a tour, discuss the artist’s work and suggest related activities. This exhibition would be ideal for visual arts, geography and history students in intermediate and senior grades and for all students in primary/elementary grades. The exhibition runs from January 22 to April 4. The opening reception is Thursday, January 22, 6 to 8 p.m. with an artist’s tour at 6:30. All are welcome. We gratefully acknowledge the support of Scotiabank Group and Canada Council for the Arts. We have a limited number of timeslots available.
