2009-2010 VIEWBOOK
Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada
www.swgc.mun.ca
“ Grenfell College is a small campus, so it feels
safe and you really get to know everybody.
You get a lot more attention here than at a
bigger university. There are free services like
the learning centre that can help you if you’re
having problems with any of your classes.
2
And the accommodations are fabulous. In
residence, you have your own room and share
a bathroom, shower and fridge with only one
other person. You cook your meals in a shared
lounge and your floor mates become like a
family. The chalets are gorgeous; they give
you the independence and feeling of living
”
off campus with the convenience of
actually living on campus.

City at night...
4
...or day. Corner Brook is a vibrant, safe,
pretty city where everyday living is a
pleasure. With a population of 22,000,
Corner Brook has all the amenities of a
larger city but the charm of a smaller town.
Corner Brook is the service centre for
the entire western region, which has
a population of about 45,000. Movie
theatres, galleries, restaurants, fitness
centres and shopping malls are all
within walking distance of the campus.
THE CITY OF CORNER BROOK
IS LIKE GRENFELL COLLEGE –
SMALL IN STATURE BUT
LARGE ON LIFE.
You’ll find Corner Brook where the mighty
Humber River flows into the Bay of Islands.
Settled into a valley of the Long Range
Mountains, the city is a mecca for those
looking for outdoor adventure. A forested
trail system sits right at the heart of the
city.
City residents are always on the move,
taking advantage of the area’s alpine and
cross-country skiing, snowmobiling,
golfing, hiking, boating and fishing.

Steady growth
Like you, Sir Wilfred Grenfell College is
evolving. Our new bachelor of resource
management degree has hit the ground
running, and we’ve grown our research
capacity nationally and internationally.
We’re planning campus improvements
that will see an increase in academic
space and residence accommodations.
6
WE’RE GROWING,
BUT WE’RE STAYING
TRUE TO OUR ROOTS.
Though our program offerings are
diversifying, we remain dedicated to
the liberal arts and science tradition.
We’re proud to be part of Memorial
University – the largest university in
Atlantic Canada. But with approximately
1,300 students at Grenfell College,
you’ll enjoy a personalized education
in an inspiring and distinctive location.
GOOD TO Grenfell College is one of four Memorial
KNOW : University campuses. We also have two
campuses in the capital city – the St. John’s
campus and the Marine Institute – and one
in Harlow, England. For a full listing of all
degree programs offered at Memorial,
check out page 50.
Kick back
All work and no play?
Unlikely.
Where else can you find first-rate alpine and
cross-country ski facilities within a 15-minute
drive of a university campus? How about hiking
and kayaking adventures? Or maybe you’ll be
enchanted by Gros Morne National Park,
recognized by the United Nations for its
ancient history and unique geology.
Whatever the weather – and we get all kinds –
you’ll find something exciting to do in this
adventurer’s paradise. Warm summers might
find you exploring Corner Brook’s cave system
or meandering along our city trails. Winters are
equally invigorating – an average snowfall of
about 400 centimetres makes Corner Brook
the snowiest city in Canada according to
Natural Resources Canada. So break out
your skis and snowshoes!
All work and no play? Not on our watch!
7

such as the Environmental Affairs Committee,
students actively promote positive change.
In coalition with other member locals of the
Canadian Federation of Students (CFS), the
GCSU successfully lobbied for the current
freeze on tuition and the implementation
of up-front needs-based grants.
The GCSU is your voice in all issues affecting the
student population. It organizes activities, offers
comprehensive health and dental plans, and
provides basic services such as photocopying.
The GCSU operates the Student Centre,
including a foodcourt, The Backlot campus
pub, and a student lounge, affectionately
known as “Couchland” (for reasons that
will quickly become obvious to you!).

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
BACHELOR OF BUSINESS
ADMINISTRATION (BBA)
No one escapes the influence of business.
Business is all around us. It’s the science and
art of managing people to produce goods,
services and experiences. Sir Wilfred Grenfell
College’s bachelor of business administration
will teach you how to provide these commodities
in today’s marketspaces in the most effective,
creative and responsible way.

WHETHER YOU PLAN TO BECOME
THE EDITOR IN CHIEF FOR A NEWS
MAGAZINE OR TO RESEARCH THE
SOCIOECONOMIC IMPACT OF
CANADA’S HEALTH CARE POLICIES,
YOU’LL BE PREPARED FOR YOUR
CAREER PATH.
There are employment prospects in human resources,
accounting, marketing, and wealth planning and
management, as well as the countless opportunities
that exist in the area of self-employment. Or, if you’re
interested in regional economic development, you
will be well positioned to pursue opportunities with
various municipal, provincial, territorial and federal
government agencies and departments.
Jenna Jones, BBA
The bachelor of business administration (BBA)
at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College is a 120-credithour undergraduate business program that
is designed to deliver a comprehensive
foundation in the fundamentals of business and
decision-making. The program also emphasizes
the importance of honing such practical skills
as critical thinking, research and analysis,
professional verbal and written communication
and interpersonal conduct. A required suite of
traditional business courses ensures you will be
equipped in the functional areas of business
operation, such as accounting, marketing,
finance and human resources.
In addition, the Grenfell BBA allows you to
concentrate on one of three growing areas
of interest in our ever-evolving business
environment: contemporary business studies,
small business and entrepreneurship, and
regional economic development.
9
17
There are several ways you can gain entry to
the Grenfell BBA. You may apply for admission
directly from high school, or those with the
appropriate academic background may be
eligible for advanced standing. If you have
advanced standing or are a transfer student,
make sure you consult with the program chair
before seeking enrolment in the program.
GOOD TO Grenfell College is a place
KNOW : to explore, discover and
Jenna Jones chose Grenfell's business administration program because she saw it as
a degree that would open a lot of doors. "The BBA program helped me establish a
strong work ethic," said Jenna, who hails from Lourdes-de-Blanc-Sablon, Que. "It
pushed me to pay attention to detail, to see things from a logical standpoint and
to develop critical opinions on real life issues." She said the level of instruction at
Grenfell is by far its best asset – "the professors are very knowledgeable, agreeable,
helpful and dedicated. They set the bar high." And even though Jenna has
graduated, she still insists she can't get enough of the place. "If I’m not taking
classes here, I find work here. It’s a fun and fresh place to be. There is always a
new project, art exhibit, fundraiser, sociable, society or other activity to take part in."
innovate. Gateway West
embodies this spirit. Gateway West is a

the Grenfell community who are investigating
small business development. If you have a

EDUCATION
BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (B.Ed.)
They say teachers are called. Heed your
calling and reach your goal of becoming
a teacher more quickly by enrolling in the
Faculty of Education’s primary/elementary
education program, fast-track option, at
Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. Officially called
the “consecutive delivery program,” it can be
completed in just four consecutive semesters,
including a teaching internship in the winter
semester.
18
IN JUST 15 MONTHS,
YOU WILL BE PREPARED TO
TEACH IN THE KINDERGARTEN
TO GRADE 6 EDUCATION SYSTEM.
Through courses such as art education and music
education, you will learn how to approach art in
relation to current theories of art and music education,
as well as how to enrich other subject areas through
these disciplines. You’ll gain an awareness and
understanding of childhood behaviour, while focusing
on the development of and distinctions between
“normal” and “exceptional” children.
Lindsi Hutchings, B.Ed.
Your coursework in the fast-track program
will give you an intensive, rich educational
experience. Courses are complemented with
a winter semester internship where you’ll
actually teach children in the classroom. This
intensive educational experience will allow
you to develop your individual teaching style
and recognize the scope and complexity of a
classroom teacher’s roles and responsibilities
under the guidance of a co-operating teacher.
The bachelor of education, primary/elementary,
consecutive delivery option, is a competitive
program. Students applying to the consecutive
delivery option must have completed a total
of 78 credit hours (26 courses). There are
specific courses necessary within these 26
courses, including a required focus area.
Further details are outlined in the Memorial
University Calendar. Students are strongly
encouraged to meet with an academic adviser
to discuss appropriate course selection.
19
GOOD TO They’ve been there…most
KNOW : of the faculty members in
the fast-track program will
have hands-on experience in local schools,
or as program specialists at the school
board level. So you can rest assured that
you will receive instruction from people who
have first-hand knowledge of teaching children
and dealing with the many different classroom
situations in which you may find yourself
following graduation.
www.mun.ca/educ/
Lindsi Hutchings has always known what she’s wanted to do with her life.
“For as long as I can remember, I have wanted to teach,” she says.
“The question was, what university would provide me with the skills
I needed to become the kind of teacher I wanted to be? After spending
three years completing pre-requisites at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College
I knew I’d made the right decision.” Lindsi feels confident and prepared
to contribute to the quality of education and the overall quality of life
of children in the school system.
ENGLISH
BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
Award-winning poets, novelists and
writers – our English faculty members have
earned provincial, national and international
reputations. Discuss atmosphere and
characterization in the classroom or take
in a reading by a leading international writer.
ENGLISH STUDENTS AT
GRENFELL COLLEGE WILL
FIND THEIR MINDS STIMULATED
AND THEIR HEARTS INSPIRED.
20
An English degree forms the foundation for a variety
of fields, preparing you for a career in journalism,
writing, public relations, public service, advertising,
education or tourism promotion. English is also a
favoured first degree if you’re considering a career
such as law or medicine.
ToddDaniel
Hennessey,
BFA,
Pinsent,
BAMFA
Majoring in English improves your knowledge
of the mechanics of the language, as well as
your ability to understand and use literary
references in speaking, writing or research.
Beyond introductory first-year English courses,
you will focus on a three part literary survey,
as well as an exploration of English language
development, critical approaches to English
literature and individual projects.
You will also complete course work in a
selected area of concentration: modern
literature, dramatic literature, Canadian
literature, or a combination of these
three areas.
GOOD TO English faculty and students
KNOW : participate in the March Hare
literary festival, an annual
event during which emerging and
internationally acclaimed poets and writers
tour Newfoundland and Labrador. And the
April Rabbit, Grenfell’s answer to the March
Hare, just celebrated its 10th anniversary.
The Rabbit invites the writers of original poetry,
prose and music to take to the stage among
supportive friends and colleagues.
www.swgc.mun.ca/english/
Daniel Pinsent says Grenfell’s English degree helped prepare him for his
studies at grad school. Although at first he had some misgivings about
attending a smaller college, he found out the opposite was true. “The third
and fourth years of my degree at Grenfell featured many classes that were
as intimate and challenging as graduate seminar classes,” says Daniel,
who is pursuing his his PhD at Queen’s University. “The enthusiasm these
professors show for the material they teach and the people they educate
is infectious. I have been inspired to become an English professor and
I can only hope to have such a strong impact on future students as
Grenfell professors have had on me.”

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (B.Sc.)
The mother of all field trips – our
environmental science program has opened
doors for students to study climate change
in the Arctic and marine environments in
Australia – just to name a couple. But if you
prefer the comforts of home... stay closer to
Grenfell College and participate in a field course
at the Bonne Bay Marine Station in Gros Morne
National Park. Our campus is not far from wetlands,
boreal forest, the ocean, river systems and
sub-Arctic tundra.
22
ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES AND
GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY.
The environment is your laboratory. Our faculty will
encourage you to get involved in the research they are
conducting – everything from the breakdown of
pesticides in the environment to the impact of the forest
industry on our region’s songbird population.
As a graduate of this program, you may be employed
as a science technologist or field scientist. Or continue
your studies in graduate school or a professional field
such as environmental law, business administration,
library science or medicine.
Jake Russell-Mercier, Class of 2010
Our program is interdisciplinary, combining
aspects of all the natural sciences. It includes a
general or honours option and provides a broad
background in many areas pertaining
to the environment, such as oceanography,
soil and soil remediation, environmental
economics, energy and the environment,
global climate change and conservation
biology. We offer two concentrations within
this program: environmental biology
and environmental chemistry.
The environmental biology stream
investigates the relationships between
environmental factors and organisms in
terrestrial and freshwater habitats, and
the human impact on these habitats.
The environmental chemistry stream
focuses on the chemical processes that
enable life to exist on earth. Emphasis is
placed on applied chemistry with specific
courses in aquatic, atmospheric and
industrial chemistry, and analytical techniques.
GOOD TO Thanks to the Gros Morne
KNOW : National Park University
Jake Russell-Mercier chose to pursue the environmental science (honours)
biology stream not only because of his interest in this field, but also
because "it is becoming a subject of increased importance on a global
scale. This program will serve me in the future as it provides me with a
strong interdisciplinary theoretical base along with some valued practical
experience." Jake says he's received excellent instruction at Grenfell and
feels his professors are genuinely interested in his academic career.
"I enjoy and appreciate my Grenfell experience – my profs have
been very approachable, knowledgeable and eager to assist me."
Environmental Internship,
environmental science graduate Alyssa Matthew
spent a summer amidst the beauty of Gros
Morne National Park. Alyssa, who hails from
Prince Edward Island, studied the trails of
Western Brook Pond to measure the impacts
of limestone gravel paths on native plants.
The internship, valued at $4,500, is sponsored
by Gros Morne National Park of Canada and
the Gros Morne Co-operating Association.
“My research will help support Gros Morne
National Park’s mandate to protect the
natural environment,” said Alyssa.

ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
From almost any vantage point on the
Grenfell College campus you can see the
sparkling Bay of Islands, or the majestic
Blow-Me-Down Mountains.
Where better to study the environment
than in a place as rich and lush as this?
WE ARE SURROUNDED
BY MOUNTAINS AND OCEAN
AND WE’RE NOT FAR FROM
NATURAL WONDERS AND
WORLD HERITAGE SITES.
24
At Grenfell College we follow our own best practices.
We promote environmental excellence and foster an
identity as an environmentally friendly university. We
are developing a campus master plan that considers
energy efficiency, water use, the indoor environment
and use of resources. The best way to know
environmental excellence is to live it.
Our environmental studies program can lead to a
variety of careers. You might work in environmental
education, park interpretation, journalism, law, or
policy and planning. You could find yourself conducting
environmental impact assessments, or taking it all in
as you work in outdoor recreation or adventure tourism.
Maria Makowska, BA
In the environmental studies program, you’ll
take courses covering topics such as resource
management, mapping, environmental
economics, ethics and policy. We offer
two concentrations within this program:
environmental perspectives and outdoor
environmental pursuits.
Environmental perspectives will help you
develop a comprehensive understanding
of environmental issues.
Outdoor environmental pursuits explores the
hows and whys of various outdoor skills, such
as kayaking and skiing, in a way that respects
our valuable environmental resources.
GOOD TO Avalanche! Not something
KNOW : you want to hear while skiing in
the mountains. But avalanches
are a hazard of which many outdoor winter
enthusiasts are not aware. In Newfoundland
and Labrador alone, 60 people have died in
avalanche-related accidents. Our environmental
studies program offers recreational
avalanche courses in partnership with the
Canadian Avalanche Association to raise
awareness of avalanche safety.
www.swgc.mun.ca/envstudy/
Maria Makowska grew up in Coquitlam, BC, and fell in love with nature
at an early age during her family's summer camping trips. "I chose to
study at Grenfell because of the small class setting, which has allowed
me to make great connections with professionals in my field," she says.
Maria received the Gros Morne Internship in her final year of study,
which gave her "a great opportunity to put the skills I had learned
to the test and gave me hands-on experience on conducting my
own research."

GENERAL SCIENCE
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (B.Sc.)
Remember high school science?
Eviscerating frogs, blowing up test tubes
and setting Bunsen burners ablaze?
Remember math and physics? Puzzling algorithms,
and the hair-raising thrills of electromagnetics?
BIOLOGY. CHEMISTRY.
EARTH SYSTEMS. MATHEMATICS.
PHYSICS. SO MANY CHOICES.
At Grenfell College you can have it all.
26
As a graduate, you will find your degree useful as a
foundation for a bachelor of education. In addition,
upon completing this undergraduate degree you can
use it as a springboard into professions such as law,
dentistry, medicine, journalism or library science.
Jason Lanza, B.Sc.
The beauty of the general science degree is
your ability to learn about several different
subject areas, as opposed to focusing on just
one. As a student in the general science degree
program, you will complete a minimum of eight
courses in three of the following five disciplines:
biology, chemistry, earth systems, mathematics
and physics. Any combination will allow you to
accumulate courses in at least three teachable
science areas. So rather than the usual “major”
and “minor,” you will, in essence, be taking
subjects in areas that are equivalent to a
triple minor.
A general or honours option is available.
GOOD TO Dr. Geoffrey Rayner-Canham

was named as one of the
2007 honorees of the 3M National Teaching
Fellowships. Over the past 30 years, Dr. RaynerCanham has promoted science to countless
students in Newfoundland and Labrador. He
has become one of the most sought-after
experts at Grenfell. Through his “Chemistry is
Everywhere!” show, he has reached thousands
of students and teachers, including those in
isolated communities in Labrador that can be
reached only by plane or coastal boat.

Grenfell's general science degree gave Jason Lanza the experience he
needed to become a science teacher. "I want to teach specifically the areas
of mathematics and physics," said Jason, who hails from Corozal Town,
Belize. "All the professors who taught me the sciences of mathematics,
physics, chemistry, earth science and environmental science have truly
stimulated my interest to pursue further studies at a graduate level. They
have challenged and guided me to discover my true potential and my true
interest in the fields of science. Because of them, I am even more eager to
become a teacher. I want to be like them.” Jason is the winner of the 2009
University Medal Academic Excellence in General Science.

HISTORICAL STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
Historical studies is more than learning
facts, dates and lists of events. It’s an
intriguing, challenging, creative and inspiring
form of intellectual and practical exploration.
At its essence, it helps everyone make better
sense of the moments, years and centuries
which have led to today’s world.
STUDYING THE PAST HELPS US
UNDERSTAND THE PRESENT,
AND PLAN FOR THE FUTURE.
28
To understand the past, you must begin by learning
from whence we came. You must understand what it
was like when European powers encountered native
peoples, why wars were fought over religion, trade
and power, and what led to key political and diplomatic
decisions. History addresses the differences which
surround us, such as between countries like Canada
and the United States, places like Newfoundland and
Labrador. It also provides different ways of looking at
the past, the many viewpoints of history’s rulers, artists,
philosophers, scholars and just “plain folk.”
Our historical studies faculty bring to life the study
of Greek, Roman, Medieval, European, North
Atlantic, Newfoundland and Canadian history. Their
specializations and interests encompass art, national
and colonial history, military history, the history
of ideas, social and cultural history, and more. What
we teach also links to related areas of historical studies,
including literary and theatre history, history of
science, and social and cultural studies.
Carolynne Gabriel, Class of 2010
Our historical studies program offers a flexible
and multi-disciplinary approach to history.
Choosing it as your major will help you develop
the ability to articulate the significance of
political, social, cultural, economic and military
events. You may also take a joint major or
consider taking historical studies as a minor.
At Grenfell we will help you develop the ability
to analyze and interpret past events, and to
learn how they’ve shaped our world. Our
faculty make every effort to help students
think critically and become independent
thinkers. The research, writing and other
skills you will learn can open doors to
professional careers in education, law,
public service, journalism, tourism, museum
studies and politics, communications and
knowledge-based industries.
Our low student-professor ratios combine with
quality instruction to provide a more
personalized teaching approach. And our
excellent library system provides collections of
documents and scholarly works to assist and
encourage students to learn about the past.

Carolynne Gabriel believes Grenfell’s BA in historical studies ensures that
students have a well-rounded understanding and appreciation of history.
“A broader understanding of how history has unfurled, as well as the
instruction received on how to think critically, are important for understanding
the present and are applicable in one's own life,” says Carolynne, who hails
from Komoka, ON. “The instruction I’ve received at Grenfell is of the best
quality, not only because the professors are highly knowledgeable in their
areas of interest, but also because they are very supportive and always
willing to offer assistance and encouragement.”

To communicate effectively.
WELCOME TO HUMANITIES
– WHERE HUMAN NATURE,
PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE COLLIDE.
30
Once you have your humanities degree in hand,
you’ll be versatile and will be able to take on just
about anything. You could go on to graduate
studies or other professional programs, or perhaps
work in areas such as journalism, law and social
science, just to name a few.
In fact, the Social Sciences and Research Council of
Canada says “humanities and social-science graduates
land good jobs, earn more and suffer less unemployment
than those with only technical or vocational training”
and that a background in liberal arts provides
“long-term earning power.” Sounds like a plan!
Josh Fleming, BA
Our humanities program encompasses seven
disciplines: Classics is the study of the ancient
cultures of Greece and Rome. English courses
develop communication skills and introduce
you to literary masterpieces. French courses
ensure you are well versed in both of our
nation’s official languages. History introduces
you to current and past events. Philosophy
offers the opportunity to study the works of our
greatest thinkers. Religious studies provides the
opportunity to explore many aspects of human
spirituality. Fine arts history takes you through
the development of visual and theatre arts.
GOOD TO The Grenfell College
KNOW : Humanities Society is a
student-run organization
that’s open to anyone who holds an interest

Josh Fleming chose Grenfell's humanities program because it covers a
broad reach of subjects in which he is interested. "The humanities teach
you to think critically, which is essential in the workplace as well as
everyday life," said Josh. "The instruction I've received has been
superior; the beauty of the program is that you grow to know professors
from a variety of disciplines. Humanities courses allow you to develop
rhetoric while being educated on a broad range of topics - If you're
willing to learn, there is always an open door at Grenfell.”

NURSING
BACHELOR OF NURSING (BN)
They are on the front line. These men and
women are responsible for your care. Few
careers are more rewarding, or more

WORKING AS A PART OF AN
INTERPROFESSIONAL HEALTH CARE
TEAM, NURSES DEAL WITH LIFE
AND DEATH SITUATIONS EVERY DAY.
32
As a nurse, you’ll be part of the largest group of
health care professionals in Canada. And you’ll be
in demand worldwide. Career opportunities extend
outside traditional hospital roles. You could work as a
practitioner in remote and rural areas, conduct research,
monitor occupational health risks or work in the
community health field. Or you could find yourself
working as an administrator or educator. Either way,
you’ll be a critical part of the community you serve.
You’ll have many opportunities to gain first-hand
knowledge of what it takes to have a successful nursing
career. The ability to think critically, reflect personally
and make informed decisions based on ethics and
evidence, as well as having sound clinical judgment
and technological competence are all essential
parts of making informed decisions as a nurse.
Western Regional School of Nursing offers low studentinstructor ratios in classrooms and clinical settings.
The bachelor of nursing program is offered at three
sites: Western Regional School of Nursing in
Corner Brook, as well as the Centre for Nursing
Studies and Memorial University, both in St. John’s.

To enrol in the nursing program at Western
Regional School of Nursing you must
have completed high school chemistry and
biology in addition to meeting the general
university requirements. Enrolment in the
nursing program is limited and the selection
process is competitive. A supplementary
nursing application is required by March 1
in addition to the general admissions
application.
As for accommodations, you may choose from
Grenfell’s student housing, Monaghan Hall
(adjacent to the hospital), or off-campus in the
Corner Brook area. And you’ll have access to
all services offered through Grenfell College.

Studying psychology at Grenfell College will give
you skills and knowledge with lifelong relevance,
particularly in the workplace: critical thinking,
problem-solving and analytical abilities, effective
writing and speaking skills.
Whether you pursue a bachelor of arts or science,
your degree in psychology can lead to a variety
of careers, such as lab instructor, police officer,
employment training counsellor, group home
director, social worker, speech therapist or physician.
Grenfell’s psychology programs also provide excellent
preparation for graduate studies at the master’s and
PhD levels in experimental, clinical and applied
psychology.
Rebekah Robbins, B.Sc. (hons)
Our first-year course will introduce you to
modern psychology. Second- and third-year
courses focus on the structure and function
of the brain, animal behaviour, the mysteries
of abnormal personalities, group pressures,
and lost and recovered memories. In the fourth
year, you will participate in a weekly seminar
discussing current issues in academic and
professional psychology, and complete an
independent research project.
You can take the psychology specialization
as either an honours or general BA or B.Sc.
If you plan to attend graduate or professional
school, you might consider the honours option.
As an honours student, you’ll take an increased
number of psychology courses in your second

SOCIAL/CULTURAL STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
You and your classmates might come from a
variety of backgrounds, but you all have one
thing in common: an innate curiosity and . . .
THE DESIRE TO FIND OUT WHY
PEOPLE DO THE THINGS THEY DO.
36
The social/cultural studies program examines the
practices and meanings of everyday life from social,
cultural and historical perspectives. It questions why
we wake the dead, have differing notions of ‘the
perfect family’, allow the mass media to influence
us, choose a particular form of medical care or
feel bound to the place where we were born.
Some say our culture – the knowledge and skills we
learned as we grew up – shapes us. Others argue that
society – our community and the media – influences us.
The program allows you to examine the interplay of
society, culture and history from three complementary
perspectives: anthropology, folklore and sociology.
These areas share an emphasis on the concept of
culture and rely on the ethnographic method – an
approach that helps you understand the world from
the perspective of the people you are studying.
The social/cultural studies degree will prepare you
for work in social research, governmental and
non-governmental organizations, social policy
and community/rural development, immigration,
public relations, journalism, cultural heritage
preservation and promotion, and the expanding
cultural tourism sector. It also provides a valuable
background for careers in business, human resources,
policing, law, medical care and social work.
Candice Pike, BA
As an interdisciplinary program, social/cultural
studies will allow you to use various lenses in
studying human behaviour: the ‘sociological
imagination’ lens, the comparative cross-cultural
lens and the informal folkloric communication
lens, among others.
In keeping with the tradition of cultural studies,
social/cultural studies at Grenfell is not taught
as a unified theory but as a diverse field of
study encompassing many different approaches,
methods and academic perspectives. It upholds
scholarly discourse that draws on theory and
methods from these various perspectives while
investigating the relations between specific
cultural practices and cultural objects under
conditions limited by power and defined by
contestation, modification and struggle.
Our faculty bring to scholarly discourse a wide
range of research interests. Faculty research
interests include rural development dynamics,
the modern funeral services industry, non-verbal
communication, medicine, Aboriginal identity
and socio-economic issues, belief systems,
identity construction in women’s narrative and
the interrelationship of power/knowledge, and
western social and cultural institutions.

SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE
MANAGEMENT
BACHELOR OF RESOURCE
MANAGEMENT (BRM)
Water, forests, oil and gas: are we using our
planet’s resources responsibly? How can we
better manage these precious renewable and
non-renewable resources, which, more often than
not, we are guilty of taking for granted? Grenfell
College’s bachelor of resource management in
sustainable resource management will equip you
to become a leader in this developing field.
THROUGH YOUR STUDIES YOU
WILL MELD ENVIRONMENTAL THEORY
WITH EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES.
38
As a graduate, you’ll be prepared for a wide variety
of careers including resource management in the public
service or private industry, environmental policy
development, ecological restoration and domestic
and international governmental and non-governmental
organizations. Or, if you wish to continue on with
advanced studies in related fields, you might like to
investigate disciplines such as geography, marine
studies, environmental planning, oil and gas studies,
or environmental law.
Erica Noseworthy, Class of 2011
For the bachelor of resource management
degree, you will be required to complete 120
credit hours, including courses in disciplines
such as biology, chemistry, economics,
environmental studies, geography and
statistics. Sustainable resource management
courses focus on areas such as marine and
terrestrial environments, industry-specific
approaches, environmental planning and
management, biodiversity, remote sensing
and image interpretation, environmental
law and renewable and non-renewable
energy resources.
A fourth-year research seminar will allow
you to focus specifically on select resource
management topics. The seminars are
presented on current research and
environmental issues by faculty, students
and guest lecturers from universities,
government and industry.
39
An independent research project will require
you to carry out an approved project on a
topic in sustainable resource management.
You will be expected to prepare a major paper
under the supervision of a faculty member,
including a systematic literature review and
independent research. This approach has

explore the many techniques of performance
and take to the stage under the guidance of
our experienced faculty. If you’d rather work
“behind the scenes”, the stagecraft
specialization will teach you the specific skills
of carpentry, props and wardrobe, stage
management and more. All your hard work
will culminate in a full-scale production.
Your home away from home will be the Fine
Arts Building, where you’ll perfect your craft
in a 200-seat theatre – a laboratory for actors,
technicians, designers, directors and audiences.
