CirculatorySystemsmartboardfile.notebook The Circulatory System Circulatory system song- teachertube November 18, 2014 Job Description: Name: Circulatory System or cardiovascular system Occupation: body's transportation system Made up of: heart, blood, and blood vessels Why I am important: I move food and oxygen to each cell in the body. I also take away cell's waste. Introduction to the circulatory system Jan 2910:12 AM Jan 2910:19 AM The cardiovascular system is made up of vessels and muscles that control the flow of the blood around the body. This is called circulation. Blood Veins bring oxygen rich blood to the heart, arteries take away CO2 rich blood Circulation song Jan 2912:13 PM Jan 2910:25 AM Plasma Inside blood liquid part of blood that carries nutrients from the digestive system and moves chemicals throughout the body centrifuge Blood is thicker than water and has a little bit salty taste. In an adults body there is 10.6 pints of blood circulating around. In their blood there is billions of living blood cells floating in a liquid called plasma. If you took a small sample of blood and poured it into a test tube and then put it in a machine called a centrifuge, you would be able to see the layers of blood. This machine spins the blood around so fast that it separates the red blood cells, from the white blood cells, from the platelets. The red blood cells sink to the bottom because they are the heavier, more solid parts, but the plasma remains at the top because it is lighter. Inside our blood Let's make our own blood soup! Jan 311:06 PM Jan 2910:27 AM 1 CirculatorySystemsmartboardfile.notebook Types of blood cells November 18, 2014 Types of blood vessels Red blood cells: Form- shaped like discs with a dimple on each side Function- to carry oxygen White blood cells: Form- different sizes and shapes 1. Arteries: carry blood Away from the heart Function- protect body from germs 2. Veins: carry blood to the heart Platelets: 3. Capillaries: Connect arteries and veins Form- irregular shapes Cool fact about capillaries: Function- form sticky blood clots They are the smallest blood vessel, they are so thin that red blood cells can only pass through them single file! That's thin! Jan 2910:37 AM Jan 2910:55 AM Understanding blood vessels Q: What is the easiest way to tell blood vessels How do you think blood apart? strongest muscle in your body divided into 2 sides might move through each of these differently? A: Size Arteries The Heart Veins Capillaries Right side: Pumps blood to your lungs to pick up oxygen Left side: pumps oxygen soaked blood to your body See the heart pump Now, obviously the arteries are not the size of a paper towel roll, or they wouldn't fit in your body. But if you can imagine the artery being the size a paper towel roll, the veins would be the size of a 1 inch tube, and the capillaries would be the size of a straw. Jan 303:21 PM 4 chambers of the heart Pump your blood- Happy Days The heart is made up of four different blood-filled areas, and each of these areas is called a chamber. There are two chambers on each side of the heart. One chamber is on the top and one chamber is on the bottom. They do not work on their own, but together as a team. The body's blood is circulated through the heart more than 1,000 times per day. Between five and six thousand quarts of blood are pumped each day. Jan 2912:21 PM The Heart's job Your heart's job is to pump blood around your body. Its muscles contract and squeeze out blood. The lefthand side pumps blood from the lungs to the rest of your body. The right-hand side pumps stale blood from your body back to your lungs for a fresh supply of oxygen. As blood begins to circulate, it leaves the heart from the left ventricle and goes into the aorta. Find #4, follow the red arrows up to the arch of the aorta and follow it down along the side of the heart to the bottom of the aorta Atria- 2 chambers on top Atrium- 1 of the 2 chambers on top The aorta is the largest artery in the body The atria are the chambers that fill with blood returning to the heart from the body and lungs. The heart has a left atrium and a right atrium. Ventricles- The two chambers on the bottom The heart has a left and a right ventricle Their job is to squirt out the blood to the body and lungs. 1. Real human heart pumping: if you're squimish you might want to close your eyes. 2. Bill Nye- The heart Jan 301:08 PM The blood leaving the aorta is full of oxygen. This is important for the cells in the brain and the body to do their work. The oxygen rich blood travels throughout the body in its system of arteries into the smallest arterioles. See what the heart does as you exercise Click on the grey Overview tab, and follow through to the pumping action. Stop after pumping action. Jan 2912:41 PM 2 CirculatorySystemsmartboardfile.notebook Heart Valves Valves work to keep the blood flowing forward: opening to let it move ahead, closing quickly so it doesn't go backward. November 18, 2014 Q: Is our blood blue inside our body? Take a class vote...stand if you think yes, sit if you think no. And the answer is..... NO! Your skin refracts light, so that deep maroon color of your blood, appears a little blue from outside your skin. Jan 302:13 PM Jan 2910:31 AM 3
