McGill University Department of Mathematics and Statistics MATH 141 CALCULUS II COURSE OUTLINE INSTRUCTOR: Georg Schmidt (BURN 1220, 398-3844, gschmidt@math.mcgill.ca); office hours: MWF 10:0-11:00 or by appointment. PREREQUISITE MATH 139, 140 or equivalent.Students who received a grade of F in the previous course are not allowed to register and those who received a D are encouraged to repeat the previous course before taking this one. Students will be expected to be thoroughly familiar with most of the material of chapters 1 to 4 of the textbook by Stewart listed below. TEXTBOOK: Calculus, 6th edition,(early transcendentals version) by James Stewart There is a Single variable version and a version including multivariable calculus which will be useful to you if you need to take Calculus III later. Other calculus textbooks may also be used, although textbook references will always be to the specified text. COURSE CONTENT: We shall cover the following material from the textbook: Chapter 5 (sections 5.1 to 5.5 ) Chapter 6 (sections 6.1 to 6.3 and 6.5) Chapter 7 (sections 7.1 to 7.5 and 7.8 ) Chapter 8 (sections 8.1 to 8.2) Chapter 10 (sections 10.1 to 10.4) Chapter 11 (sections 11.1 to 11.7) TUTORIALS AND HELPDESK Tutorials for this course are compulsory. The teaching assistants who run the tutorials will also have office hours. In addition there is a Help Desk in BURN 911 whose hours will be posted at http://www.math.mcgill.ca/students/undergrad/help desk ASSIGNMENTS There will be no more than 7 compulsory WebWork assignments. The WebWork webpage is http://msr04.math.mcgill.ca/webwork/m141f07. More information concerning these assignments can be found on the course website. MIDTERM TEST One 2 hour Midterm test scheduled for Wednesday, October 24, 2007, from 19:00 to 21:00. No calculators, books or notes will be allowed. CLASS QUIZZES There will be brief quizzes held during tutorial hours. Each quiz will require a detailed answer to some question(s) taken from the previously submitted WebWork Assignment. FINAL EXAMINATION The final examination will be of 3 hours duration and take place during the regular examination period. No calculators, books or notes will be allowed. MARKING SCHEME: The final letter grade will correspond to the higher of (10%A + 5% Q +25% M +60% E) and (10% A + 5% Q + 85% E), where A is the assignment mark, Q the mark on the quizzes, M the midterm mark and E the final examination mark.. Note that the assignment and quiz marks are therefore a compulsory component of the final grade! Course documents, assignments 1 etc. will be posted there along with announcements so you are urged to consult the site regularly. However, do not lose sight of the fact that you need to do the assignments yourself in order to develop the skills you will need for the final exam.
