THE ORATOR ST. DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH March 2016 Presiding Priest: MESSAGE FROM FR. NICHOLAS What will you do this lent? Fr. Nicholas Hadzellis Cell: 617.530.0885 Every year I meet someone of a different denomination that asks me what I am giving up for lent? I tell them, I don't give anything up, as an Orthodox Christian, I do more. I Fast more, I pray more and I offer more charity. We are called to do more during this preparatory period of Lent in expectation of the Passion and Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. But some will then ask if I am a monk, because their understanding, fasting is for the monastic. But that is not true. The goal of the monastic is the same for any Christian, that is to grow closer to Christ and find salvation through Him. God does not need me to fast, nor pray, nor provide charity or acts of mercy. God doesn't need me to do anything for Him, after all, He is God. It is I who need to fast, I need to pray more, I need to provide charity and acts of mercy. I benefit by battling the passions of pride, anger, lust, envy, gluttony, avarice, and sloth. As we battle these vices, we develop virtues and a closeness to Christ. Through these practices, it is I who benefit from these spiritual works and exercises, and so will you. So the better question is, how are your preparing for Easter (Pascha). What will you do to bring you closer to Christ? How are you willing to let the Lenten season and the spiritual exercises change you? The church has taught us to fast, to pray, and to work acts of mercy, but it may not be what you think. So we fast, but purpose of fasting is not to “give up” things, nor to do something “sacrificial.” The purpose of fasting is to learn discipline, to gain control of those things that are indeed within our control but that we so often allow to control us. In our culture especially, food dominates the lives of many people. We collect cookbooks. We have an entire TV network devoted to food [the “Food Channel”]. We have eating disorders, diets galore, weight loss pills, liposuction treatments, stomach stapling—all sorts of things that proceed out of the fact that we often allow food, which in an of itself cannot possible control us, to control us. We fast in order to gain control, to discipline ourselves, to gain control of those things that we have allowed to get out of control. DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH ] With this understanding then, we can add that our fast is not just from meat and dairy, but from gossip, idleness, judgment of others and other vices. As we face spiritual struggle, it is Christ who comes close to us. Fasting is a help to us, we should approach the fast with expectation of spiritual improvements. Saint John Chrysostom writes "Dost thou fast? Give me proof of it by thy works! Is it said by what kind of works? If thou seest a poor man, take pity on him! If thou seest in enemy, be reconciled to him! If thou seest a friend gaining honor, envy him not! If thou seest a handsome woman, pass her by! For let not the mouth only fast, but also the eye, and the ear, and the feet, and the hands, and all the members of our bodies. Let the hands fast, by being pure from rapine and avarice. Let the feet fast, by ceasing from running to the unlawful spectacles. Let the eyes fast, being taught never to fix themselves rudely upon handsome countenances, or to busy themselves with strange beauties." When you compete in the spiritual exercise, you experience spiritual reward. May we all participate in the the Lenten fast, as we prepare for the passion of Christ and His glorious resurrection to receive the reward of a closeness to Jesus Christ. Fr. Proverbs 22:6 ORTHODOX TRADITION March 25, the Independence Day in Greece March 25 is both a national (revolution against the Turks) and religious holiday (Annunciation of Virgin Mary). There is school flag parade in every town and village and a big armed forces parade in Athens. The Byzantine Empire fell to the Turks in 1453 and the Greeks remained under the Ottoman rule for nearly 400 years. During this time their language, their religion and their sense of identity remained strong. On March 25, 1821 the bishop Germanos of Patras raised the Greek flag at the Monastery of Agia Lavra in Peloponnese and one more revolution started against the Turks. The people of Greece shouted "Freedom or Death" and they fought the War of Independence for 9 years (18211829) until a small part of modern Greece was finally liberated and it was declared an independent nation. The struggle for the liberation of all the lands inhabited by Greeks continued. In 1864, the Ionian islands were added to Greece; in 1881 parts of Epirus and Thessaly. Crete, the islands of the Eastern Aegean and Macedonia were added in 1913 and Western Thrace in 1919. After World War II the Dodecanese islands were also returned to Greece. (Explore Crete.com) 4 ST. We will reflect on the lives of the saints, and how God uses ordinary people with no pretensions to heroism to be catapulted by circumstances into heroic deeds. God chooses the most unlikely people to proclaim His name, often unto the ultimate sacrifice. We will study some unlikely heros and learn how they are not so unlike us. Adult religious education class begins March 20 after the fellowship hour. International Orthodox Christian Charities: News and Information IOCC Relief Eases Hardship For Syrian Refugees And Greek Hosts Baltimore, MD (IOCC) — In spite of worsening weather on land and sea, the number of refugees from Syria and other war torn countries landing on the Greek isles this year has surpassed 500,000. Greece remains the busiest entry point for new sea arrivals in the Mediterranean. Overwhelmed Greek island authorities lack the resources to continue feeding refugees as the country struggles to address the needs of its own people affected by the economic crisis now in its sixth year. 8 ST. DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH ] International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), and its partner, Apostoli, the humanitarian arm of the Church of Greece, are responding to the most urgent needs of vulnerable refugees with food assistance and helping ease some of the strain on Greece's refugee relief efforts. IOCC is providing up to 1,000 hot meals and water daily to refugees landing on the small Greek island of Chios, and up to 1,000 meals and water daily for refugees on the island of Samos. All food sourced by IOCC for the refugees is being prepared by local restaurants to help support the local economy on these small islands. The influx of Syrian refugees arriving at Chios island's outdated immigration reception center also have access to shower and sanitation facilities upgraded by IOCC so that they can take care of their personal hygiene in privacy. In addition, IOCC has distributed sleeping mats, sleeping bags, personal hygiene kits, infant supplies, and school kits to refugees and school-aged refugee children arriving at the center. Even as Greece continues to receive refugees to its shores, IOCC continues to address the needs of Greeks facing their own food insecurity as a result of the prolonged economic crisis. Since 2012, IOCC is supporting the distribution of dry food parcels, prepaid grocery cards, and hot meals at church-run soup kitchens in Athens. IOCC, an ACT Alliance member, is providing immediate and ongoing humanitarian assistance to families in need who have endured four years of Syria's brutal civil war. More than 3.2 million Syrian people displaced in their own country, or living as refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Armenia, Greece, and Serbia have received assistance from IOCC. FORGIVENESS SUNDAY March 13: On this last Sunday before Great Lent, the last day that traditionally Orthodox Christians eat dairy products until Pascha, the Church remembers the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise. God commanded them to fast from the fruit of a tree (Gen. 2:16), but they did not obey. In this way Adam and Eve and their descendants became heirs of death and corruption. On Forgiveness Sunday many attend Forgiveness Vespers on the eve of Great Lent. They hear on the Lord's teaching about fasting and forgiveness and enter the season of the fast forgiving one another so that God will forgive them. If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your heavenly Father forgive you your trespasses (Matthew 6:14). 9 ST. DEMETRIOS GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH ] The Gospel reading of the day also gives advice on fasting. Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. (Matthew 6:1618). The Rite of Forgiveness After the dismissal at Vespers, the priest stands beside the analogion, or before the ambon, and the faithful come up one by one and venerate the icon, after which each makes a prostration before the priest, saying, "Forgive me, a sinner." The priest also makes a prostration before each, saying, "God forgives. Forgive me." The person responds, "God forgives," and receives a blessing from the priest. Meanwhile the choir sings quietly the irmoi of the Paschal Canon, or else the Paschal Stichera. After receiving the priest's blessing, the faithful also ask forgiveness of each other. At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy we will pray an abrievated Vespers Service and participate in the Rite of Forgiveness. 2016 STEWARDSHIP UPDATE 2016 Goal $213,200.00 Goal Paid 8.18% Total Stewardship Pledged $122,204.00 57.32% Additional Pledges Needs to make Goal: $90,996.00 42.68% Total Collected thru 02/20/2016: $22,218.00 Number of Families Contributing: Avg.
