OCTOBER 2008
From the Editor: We feel compelled to pass along
information that we have gleaned from alumni who have
been in touch with us this year. We’re always so happy to
hear from you and love to recount your news. We make an
assumption that you enjoy reading about people that you
knew when you were 12, but if that is not the case let us
know and we will remove you from our list. Our journalistic techniques tend toward the gossip column genre since
we usually rely on info that we glean by pumping our unsuspecting alumni. Since we go to print only once a year it
takes awhile for a reprint, so if your information is incorrect
then you might want to grin and bear it. Of course it’s much
safer to send in your news to us to ensure accurate reporting. We do not underestimate the good will of our alumni
who are generous donors to our scholarship fund, provide
testimonials for us, keep in touch and send their boys to us
(or themselves for family camp). We hope this finds you in
good health with good memories of your camping days.
WHAT’S NEW AT CAMP: We had another great
camping season, being fortunate to be filled with a waiting
list in November. While it’s tougher to find good staff we
filled our ranks with the outstanding leadership that we have
been known for. We’re very proud of our staff and the extreme measures they take to entertain our campers. Some of
the new programming we have added over the years really
taps into our campers imagination and creativity. A night
time game called Espionagestayed is a camper favorite. It’s
a game of intrigue and problem solving involving moving
through camp in the dark unnoticed to achieve objectives.
The objectives and theme of the game changes each time it’s
played. Cabin groups have guides that lead them through
this game of sleuthing and chicanery. Our boys now come
prepared to camp with night vision goggles and their camo
gear. Another winner was our King and Country night (A
Medieval extravaganza). Two knights staged mini battles
all over camp using a form of finger wrestling with dramatic
deaths if you lose on the battlefield. The whole event culminated with a huge battle on the athletic field. What no one
knew was that Leb had arranged for real jousters to come to
camp pounding in on their steeds for the final battle. Both
jousters and horses were dressed in historically correct costuming. Not to mention that Genevieve was gorgeous. It
was so much fun to see the surprise on our campers faces.
The 12 foot long dragon operated by two counselors and
the king being carried in on his throne all added to the festivities. Our counselors never stepped out of character and
we loved the costumes that they made. I don’t know what
we’ll do for an encore next summer. Our artist in residence
this summer was a big hit. She and our campers dug clay
out of the ground, cleaned it to get it ready to make pots
that were fired in a primitive kiln the kids helped to make.
In another fun project, when a tree needed to come down
at camp we brought a chain saw artist in to make a great
sculpture. Amazing the artistry one can do with a chain
saw.
We also continue to add programing to address our responsibility to teach our campers good stewardship of the environment. This summer we added an all camp game called
Predator and Prey as well as a nature hunt to teach flora
and fauna identification. We brought in a local naturalist
for our juniors and put in a demo garden. Our campers
were surprisingly happy to weigh their waste in the dining
hall and separate trash for our compost pile which fed our
gardens. Our Trip Director BRIAN GEISLER developed a
new camp site and program called Pathfinders on the nature
trail to teach all of the skills necessary to enhance our tripping program. We also have record numbers of our campers
signing up for our junior tripping program and sign up trips.
We are well aware that we have a nature deficit disorder in
this country and we are doing everything in our power to
reach our goal of No Child Left Inside.
We have in our midst the new president of the Association of Independent Camps representing all private camps
across the country. Leb will be busy attending conferences
in this new post and will sit on the National Board of the
American Camp Association. He is very involved with the
ACA’s mission of 20/20 (twenty thousand campers attending camp by the year 2020). Leb recruited PAUL ADELSTEIN (T.V. and film actor) to help us get out the message
that kids need camp. We just recently returned from the
International Camping Conference in Quebec City with
camp owners and directors from around the world including Mongolia. It was a great opportunity to see all that is
taking place in youth development around the world. However there is still much to do to make the world a better
place for children.
TEN YEAR MEN THIS SUMMER:
It’s a big commitment to return to a place for 10 years. It
means defending camp as a legitimate job with parents and
missing out on what is going on at home. Despite all of that
our list of ten year men is growing and a new twist is that
their parents usually show up for their big roast. However
I’m not sure that they understand all of the embellishment
of the stories that are told. I do have to say that the guys
are getting better all of the time with the psych outs leading
up to the event. This summer JON KOHL, JASON PERELES, MATTY HOLLEB and KIM MCCORMACK
were inducted. Our campers never can get enough of the
stories, however some of the stories left me scratching my
head.
FAMILY
CAMP 2008
Post camp started off with a bang this summer when about
50 post campers ended up at CHUCK WARSHAWSKY’S
new restaurant The Fireside (The old Tony’s Fireside) in
Hayward for dinner prior to our dinning room opening.
Chuck loved cooking for the group, many of whom he attended camp with. It’s been so fun to have him in the area.
Our alumni are coming back to camp with their families for
family camp in good numbers. We love it when they do.
Alumni know what camp is all about and are happy to contribute to the fun or plan their own program if they don’t like
ours. For instance JON SHERMAN sits on the porch most
of the day playing his guitar and before you know it others join in. There is no shortage of music at Family Camp
since our Tennis Pro is a professional musician and brings
his band to camp to play for happy hour. When it comes
to the good vs. evil Capture the Flag game we just let our
alumni run with it. The announcements leading up to it with
MIKE GREEN, JOE MENDES, PAUL NATHANSON and
JON SHERMAN are as much fun as the event. STEVE
RICHMAN is always punking someone usually Leb and I.
KEITH KRETCHMER and his family along with the NATHANSONS ran the breakfast cookout. MARK HOLTZ
was a good sport he brought his three small children without
mom and never broke a sweat.. We provide lots of fun family programing during the week and delicious food. It’s a no
brainer family vacation. A word of caution: once you come
to family camp your kids will not let you miss a summer.
They want to come back to see all of the friends they have
made. Bully for our post camp directors DAN LICHTENSTEIN and ARI GOLDBERG who showed our campers a
great time. Other Alums at family camp included: EDDIE
LESHIN, JIM SILBERMAN, CARY ROSENTHAL, JON
FREMSTAD, ROB PORTER, TOM PETERMAN, PETER
KATZ, ANDY ZUKROW, GARY KRETCHMER, MIKE
CUTLER, PAUL ADELSTEIN, BEN MIZEL, STEVE and
DENNIS RICHMAN, FATHER BILL KEY. If you would
like to join us with your family don’t wait until the summer.
Get on our list soon.
DATES FOR POST CAMP 2009 AUG. 15TH-22ND.
Starting and ending with breakfast. Call our office early
we fill quickly every year.
CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCK
It’s so much fun for Leb and I to have alumni children at
camp. During the friendship fire at the beginning of the
summer we ask our campers to stand up if their fathers,
uncles, grandfathers, brothers attended camp. Its amazing
to see how many of them are standing. We love the history
and connection that camp holds.

ANOTHER SMALL WORLD STORY. TIM ETTENHEIM Writes us this: “We discovered yesterday evening,
here in New York City, that two North Star guys have known
each other for awhile but weren’t aware of the connection
until now. I was a camper during the ‘60s and counselor
and maintenance/driver/opener/closer guy in the early 70’s,
from Whitefish Bay; I’ve lived in Greenwich Village and
worked around Manhattan since ‘78. AARON LAURITO
was a camper from 92-96, grew up in the north suburbs of
Chicago and moved to New York a couple of years ago after college. Aaron is now, although he’s leaving to go to
graduate school, the supervisor of tutoring services at Comprehensive Development, Inc., a very special nonprofit that
provides a network of services to 1200 over-age and undercredited high school kids in one school in New York. I’m
CDI’s board chair. Aaron and I were chatting at a student
event, and he said he wanted to get back to see northern
Wisconsin this summer and you can probably finish the
rest of the story. Long story short, while I’ve long been
inured to meeting Milwaukee expats in New York, learning
that a young star in an organization I value deeply is from
North Star was a very pleasant surprise that needed sharing.” (editors note: I love these small world stories please
share yours)....DOUG BERCU welcomed another little
boy to his family. That makes two future NSC campers says

to individuals “that embody pure motivation and compassionate concern for the well being of others, world peace,
ecology, and global responsibility.” In choosing Michael as

health and healthier communities. Previous award

exploration of the idea of art as an interpretation of and a
catalyst for peace. We love how Michael has used his camp
network to help in his endeavors. PAUL NATHANSON is

did everything there was
to do in the Southwest.
Leb took them up to the
Grand Canyon, they visited Sedona, hiked Bear
Canyon and did all that
Tucson had to offer. Prior
to their leaving I asked little Kerry what she liked best about
the trip and she said “the night that you painted my nails and
having you and Leb all to myself.” Proof that less is sometimes more...STEVE RICHMAN was re-elected to the

and spent exactly 10 hours just so he could say hi to everyone. His place in Melbourne is the North Star meeting spot.
This year he caught up with CHRIS SVOBODA who has
been studying a semester abroad in Sydney. Says Brad,
“Chris now 21 makes me feel old as I remember when he
was my camper in the Junior Village. It was good to see

Sydney. Because we have such a wonderful base of alumni
in Australia Brad is contemplating hosting a reunion. It’s
been a wonderful reciprocal thing. When our international
staff travel after camp they are the recipients of some amazing hospitality by our parents and staff. When our staff
travel abroad it has been returned in aces. It makes Leb and
I so proud of our community.... GREG HAMMERSCHLAG (Little Big Schlag) recently worked at a wilderness program called Soltreks. Schlag says that he had a

NORTH STAR SCHOLARSHIP....CAMP FOR ALL KIDS....THE LOU AND RENEE ENDOWMENT... IT
GETS A LITTLE CONFUSING In late October NSC alums Mike Simons, Rob Porter and Joey Mendes joined the
board of the Camp for All Kids Foundation (CFAK). Many of you know that the North Star Scholarship Fund created by
Lou and Renee in 1945 has taken on the title of several entities. Contributions can be made to the Lou and Renee Rosenblum Fund, the North Star Scholarship Fund or the CFAK Foundation. A little confusing
yes, but easily explained. It seemed only fitting to name the scholarship fund in honor of our
founders Lou and Renee and we did so about 7 years ago. However, many of our early alumni
and Post Campers who are very supportive were used to contributing to the Scholarship Fund
and they continue to do so. Fifteen years ago NSC alum and owner/director of Camp Kamiji,
Mike “Moose” Jay started the Camp For All Kids Foundation. With Renee’s blessings we began to divert Scholarship Funds to the CFAK Foundation. The beauty of CFAK is that funds
are provided to enable kids to attend either North Star or 4 other camps whose directors are
alumni of North Star. The camps are Kamaji (Mike and Kathy Jay), Camp Timberlane (Mike
and Leslie Cohen), Birch Trail (Gabe and Barb Chernov), and Chippewa Ranch Camp (Cliff
and Lisa Lissner and formerly owned by Tom “Flash” and Pam Adler). Funds coming into our scholarship program are
also sent to Milwaukee’s Children’s Outing Association in honor of Lou and Renee. Rob and Joey have been instrumental
in expanding the CFAK Mission to include Cleveland campers. Last summer 4 campers were able to experience a camping experience as a direct result of their efforts. As a teacher in Cleveland Joe works with students that fit the mission of
CFAK and he is working hard to communicate with the campers, the families and the camp directors. Before the board
meeting Joe met with the families of the campers that attended camp this past summer and took video footage of the kids
and families talking about the value of their camp experience. If you view the footage, and we are working to make that
possible, you will see that It is not an exaggeration to say that the kids and their families believe they had a life changing
experience. The beauty of the CFAK program is that the campers are able to attend camp for as long as they like. Therefore,
they are just like the rest of the campers and at the end of the summer they are able to give hugs to their buddies and say,
“See you next year.” The problem that CFAK is experiencing is not unlike every non-profit organization in the country.
There is a serious shortfall of funds. I am committed to allow our scholarship campers to return to North Star for as long
as they like, regardless of funding. However, CFAK may be forced to limit the number of campers they can send in the
future because of a shortage of funds. Many of you have been incredibly supportive of the scholarship program and Sue
and I sincerely appreciate your contributions. Current campers are contributing Bar Mitzvah money to the program. One
camper Tommy Mills contributed over $8,000.00 last year. AMAZING!!! We hope that you will continue to support this
very worthwhile and important program. Last year 73 kids were able to attend camp. There are several grass roots efforts
across the countries that are being implemented to raise money. One of the most interesting is an effort by Tom Adler. Tom
has written a book entitled, “Campingly Yours.” Tom traces his experiences as a camper and staff member at North Star
and then discusses his decision to purchase and his adventures as owner of Chippewa Ranch Camp. I have read the book
and believe that any NSC alumni will particularly enjoy reading it. In fact, anyone will enjoy reading it and it can be purchased on line or found in some national book chains. While reading the book you will learn about many of the North Star
traditions. It is a fun, heartwarming book and has a great message. A couple of NSC alums have purchased enough copies
of Tom’s book to send a copy to each of you. We will also be asking for a contribution to the Lou and Renee Rosenblum
Fund and hope that you will contribute generously. Tom’s goal in publishing the book is to raise significant dollars for the
scholarship program and has indicated that all proceeds from sales of the book, after expenses, will go to the fund. This is
a very, generous offer and a substantial commitment as Tom spent 2 years writing the book!
There is one other thing I would like to mention and this is probably directed to very few of you. Sue and I would like
the Lou and Renee Rosenblum Fund to raise enough money to fund an endowment for the CFAK Foundation to provide
camperships to deserving kids forever. To do this we need substantial money. We know that some of our alumni have been
remarkably successful and some have substantial family trusts. I would love to talk to any one of you that is interested in
making a sizable contribution. There are multiple ways that this can be accomplished. Please let me know if you would
like to initiate a conversation. I can promise you that your TOTAL investment would go to sending kids to camp and would
provide them with a life changing experience. You can ask Joe Mendes, he’s seen first hand the benefits of camp.
Best wishes and keep those campfires returning. Leb
