Overseas Business Operations
Nisshin Steel is moving forward with overseas operations through the establishment of joint venture companies and capital
participation abroad, as well as foreign technical cooperation in providing technical know-how, mainly for coated steel and
stainless steel.
In the field coated steel in particular, the joint venture company Wheeling-Nisshin, Inc. was established in partnership with
Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corporation in the United States in June 1984 to manufacture galvanized and aluminized steel sheet.
Its first production line went into operation in 1988, and operations are proceeding smoothly. To meet the growing demand for coated
steel sheet in the American market, in 1991 the company began construction of a second production line, which came online in 1993.
At present, the company maintains a combined monthly production of 50,000 tons.
Chang Fu Stainless Steel Center(Suzhou), a Nisshin Steel
joint venture, aims to help meet China's increasing
demand for stainless and high-tech steel.

Zinc-Coated Products at a Glance
Zinc-Coated Products Manufactured through Nisshin Steel's Unique Gas Wiping Process
The experience of Nisshin Steel in galvanizing extends back a century, making us one of the pioneers in coated steel products.
Over the years, our objective has been to develop innovative products and technologies. In the coated steel segment,
the opportunities have been many as demand has grown and applications broadened. The result has been an increasing variety
of Nisshin products.
To manufacture these products, we have developed innovative processing technologies. The gas wiping technique which we
developed has achieved superior coating uniformity for zinc-coated sheet. Additional advancement have enhanced other
properties such as corrosion resistance, paint adhesion, and formability.

■ Zinc-Coated Products at a Glance ■
1.GALVANIZED STEEL SHEET
Cross-sectional composition of
galvanized steel sheet
Zn(zinc)
Superior workability
Moonstar brand galvanized steel sheets have a minimum
iron-zinc alloy layer. This insures that the coating will not
peel under normal forming methods.
Regular Spangle
Fe(iron)
Uniform coating thickness
Moonstar brand galvanized steel sheets are manufactured
by Nisshin Steel's unique gas wiping process which assures
the formation of a uniform zinc coating over the steel surface.
Many problems of the conventional process have been
completely overcome, greatly improving the quality of the
finished product.
Minimized Spangle
High corrosion resistance
Excellent appearance
Zinc coating prevents corrosion by sealing off the steel
surface from corrosive environments. If the coating is
accidentally scratched the surrounding zinc then acts as a
sacrificial anode and "heals the wound". This is called
"sacrificial protection."
This sheet has a beautiful, smooth surface due to the
complete suppression of spangles by a special treatment
right after galvanization. Its excellent appearance is ideal
for uses which require high corrosion resistance without
painting.
2.GALVANNEALED STEEL SHEET
Variety of coating thicknesses available
Galvannealed sheet is an iron-zinc alloy suitable for painting.
Several different coating thicknesses are available to suit
individual applications.
Cross-sectional composition of galvannealed
steel sheet
Zn+Fe (zinc-iron alloy)
High corrosion resistance
Galvannealed sheet is specially galvanized by our unique
gas wiping process, which forms a uniform zinc coating.
If scratches occur during one of the primary forming
processes or during transit, the galvanic action will prevent
rust from occuring.
Fe(iron)
Strong paint adhesion
This sheet's coarse surface induces paint adhesion far
better than other coated steel sheets.
Economical
There is no need for chemical treatment when applying
paint. This means great savings in labor, materials, and time.
A broad range of applications
Galvannealed sheet is ideal for a broad range of applications
from construction materials to electrical appliances.

Guide to Ordering
1.Specification
Select the most suitable grade from this brochure according to the desired degree or method of forming to be employed and the
intended final use.
2.Surface Treatment
Select the most appropriate surface treatment from this brochure according to the desired method of treatment after forming and the
conditions under which the final products will be used.
3.Coating Mass
Specify the proper coating mass according to the desired corrosion resistance, the conditions of use of the final products, the forming
method to be employed and other relevant factors.
4.Oiling
The application of rust-preventive oil may be specified regardless of the surface treatment. It is recommended to specify oiling in order
to protect against rusting in intermediate processes and against fingerprints, smearing or damage during handling, as well as for
lubrication during the forming process. Oiling is necessary for zinc-coated steel sheets without surface treatment.
5.Coils
Specify delivery in coils or cut lengths according to the conditions of cutting or forming. Coils offer a higher material yield and assist
in the automation of forming operations; however, some detective portions might remain because they cannot be removed
through inspection.
6.Edge Finishing
Select either mill edge or slit edge according to the conditions of use.

Precautions in Use
1.Unloading and Storage
(1)If zinc-coated steel sheets become wet during unloading or storage, white rust will occur. Keep zinc-coated steel sheets fully
protected from rain, dew and seawater. Storage where humidity is high or in a sulfur dioxide atmosphere should be avoided. Store
in a clean, dry place.
(2)Any damage to packing paper should be repaired.
Abrasion spots (black spots)
■Very occasionally, black stains of film 1mm to 5mm in diameter appear at regular intervals on the surface of zinc-coated
steel sheets in coils as well as cut lengths. Such stains cannot be wiped off even with benzene, ethyl alcohol, or any
other solvent. These stains, usually called abrasion spots or black spots, do not form during manufacturing but are
caused by sheet-to-sheet friction due to repeated vibration during transit. Although it is true that abrasion spots spoil
the appearance of zinc-coated steel sheets, they present no practical problem in use apart from appearance.
■How do abrasion spots occur? Zinc-coated steel sheets in transit are subjected to repeated vibration of various
degrees, which causes sheet-to-sheet slippage. The long duration of this repeated slippage causes extremely minute
projections and indentations on the sheet surface to enlarge, resulting in the formation of black or abrasion spots.
Thus, to prevent abrasion spots, special devices are needed to ensure that steel sheets in transit are not subjected to
repeated vibration.
2.Forming
(1)Use lubricating oils if zinc coating sticks to the surface of the roll in roll forming or to the die in press forming.
(2)Some lubricating oils containing an extreme-pressure additive are corrosive to zinc. Before using a lubricating oil, confirm that
it is not corrosive. If the use of corrosive oil is unavoidable, perform degreasing or other post-treatment immediately after forming.
3.Welding
When resistance welding is employed, zinc will stick to the electrodes, requiring them to be cleaned or replaced as appropriate.
4.Painting
In order to obtain good paint-to-sheet adhesion, the surface of zinc-coated steel sheets should be subjected to chemical or
similar treatments prior to painting.
5.Fabricating
Chips such as metal dust which occur in fabricating spoil the appearance of the products. Remove chips from the products
carefully.

ISO Certification
1.All the Company's Works Achieve ISO 9002 Certification
ISO 9002 certification was obtained by all Nisshin Steel's works by 1997/98. In acquiring this certification, the company's quality
management systems have acquired a global assurance "passport" for all of its products and production technologies.
2.All Zinc-coated Steel Sheet Produced under ISO 14001 Certification
To further promote the principle of "continuously improving the company's environmental management system,"Nisshin Steel
has been actively seeking ISO 14001 certification. By March 1998 five of Nisshin Steel's works attained certification for this
international environmental management standard. The certified works include the Kure works which serves as our melting
center and the Sakai and Ichikawa works which produce coated steel. Thus, all Nisshin Steel's zinc coated steel sheets are
manufactured in the works with ISO 14001 certification.
The Sakai Works, our first works obtaining the certification, uses a variety of manufacturing processes to create a range of
products-principally different types of surface-treated steel sheets. Moreover, the works' proximity to populous urban areas as well
as the Seto Inland Sea National Park requires it to have all the more stringent controls in place. Keenly aware of the importance of
promoting environmental protection, the works established an environmental management system, which directly led to the
achievement of ISO 14001 certification.
ISO 14001 Certificate of Registration awarded to the company's Sakai Works.
