As we native Houstonians say, the “dog days” of summer are upon us and I hope
that everyone has put the rain, poor economy, and the last of Ike behind them!
We had a very busy spring for the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter! The most successful
and really great fun event of course was the 2009 Texas Gulf Coast Chapter
Golf Classic made possible by KIVA Kitchen& Bath, our Title Sponsor! Because
of them and the other sponsors and supporters, we netted close to $27,000.00
for the Chapter. Funds will go not only toward maintaining the workings of our
chapter (including a much needed new phone system) and community involvement but more importantly we will be able to once again contribute to the students
with scholarship opportunities. See a complete listing of the loyal supports and
sponsors inside this issue.
Speaking of success, how about a National ASID Award going to the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter! Thanks to our
Community Involvement chairperson, Thomasine Johnson, Allied Member ASID our chapter will be awarded
the 2008 ASID Chapter Community Service Award. This award comes after careful review and judging of
submitted documentation presented to a national committee for judging. The award is bestowed upon a
professional chapter whose community service best exemplifies the spirit of bringing design to life in the
service of others. Our chapter will be recognized in ASID ICON magazine and will be honored at Celebration,
the ASID Design Awards taking place in July in conjuncUPCOMING EVENTS
tion with the ASID Chapter Leadership Conference.
Please extend your congratulations to Thomasine for
June 30th
her contribution to the community and for her commitJune Program Meeting - Finance 101 “Keeping your Business

Texas Gulf Coast Chapter Wins The ASID
National Community Service Award!
By Thomasine Johnson, Community Involvement Chair
Texas Gulf Coast Chapter ASID partnered with Gifts with
Heart, Houston Community College (HCC), The Greater
Houston Builders Association, Habitat for Humanity
along with 27 other sponsors on a project called “Beyond
the Build”. On May 8, 2009, we were notified that our
project was awarded the prestigious ASID National Community
Service Project of the Year. The project is being published
in the next issue of ASID ICON publication.
Through this design initiative, sponsors gave two new
Houston Habitat for Humanity families the experience of
not just walking into a house, but a home—from flowerbeds,
to furniture to finishing treatments on the walls. Simultaneously,
the project also allowed homeowners from all over Houston
the opportunity to apply these same concepts to their own
homes.
The end result was not only a beautiful space for the blessed families,
but also the opportunity for each
sponsor to work together as a team
and build new community partners.
Congratulations to all who worked
so hard to make this project of honor.
What’s Next? …
Designers needed to help mentor
design students at Houston
Community College.
Are you interested in participating
in a high visibility community service project, make a difference, support future designers
and have fun along the way?
In September 2009, Texas Gulf Chapter ASID is teaming with Gifts with Heart, Houston
Community College and Jet Power Tools to design, execute and film the building of two
reading spaces. One space will be for Communities in Schools (CIS) and one for the
Mental Health and Mental Retardation Authority of Harris County (MHMRA).
How can you help? Help select and critique the two winning reading space designs by HCC
design students. The Construction students at HCC will follow design specifications to build
and install the furnishings. Gifts with Heart will film the process.
By documenting the initiative, the space designs can be utilized by other schools, families
and organizations needing reading rooms, enhance woodworking shop programs, and teach design principals related to the project.
If you would like to participate in this project or would like to propose another project to the community involvement committee, please contact

Community Involvement
By Thomasine Johnson, Community Involvement Committee Chair
• Public or nonprofit projects that show the benefits of sustainable design.
The mission of the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter of ASID Community Involvement
Committee is to pursue pathways for alternative community-based work,
thus raising the quality and quantity of pro bono design, service and work
to the public interest in the local communities. Our goal is to:
• Demonstrate to the local community why design matters.
• Discover leadership opportunities for emerging professionals by discussing
the social ethics of volunteerism.
• Demonstrate the responsibility of community service in the profession
of design.
The community service projects criteria include but are not limited to
the following:
• Public or nonprofit building projects that assist persons in need, such
as Habitat for Humanity.
• Community shelters or centers to assist persons in need, such as the
homeless, abused women and children, persons with disabilities.
• Public or nonprofit healthcare, rehabilitations, respite or hospice facilities including Ronald McDonald House and similar facilities.
• Public or nonprofit day care or educational facilities
• Public or nonprofit projects that show the benefits of universal design
The projects we have scheduled for this year include:
The Woman’s Home
We are partnering with The Woman’s Home project to help with their plan
to build an 87-unit green complex apartment to assist women in need. It
is our goal to provide the design services of their model unit. The groundbreaking is scheduled for April 09.
Universal Design Project
Diane Alexander with the Houston Art Institute is spearheading our
universal design project. It involves the students, ASID and medical industry.
Our goal is to publish a book of case studies and design tips that address
the unique issues of universal design.
We are in the process of providing a link on our TGCC/ASID Web site that
will direct you to other organizations that need our assistance on ongoing
bases such as, The Furniture Bank, Habitat for Humanity, etc. I would like
to thank Diane Alexander, Lela, Beltran, Melanie Brectel, Melanie Brown,
Deborah Donald, James Keathley, Donna Page, Stacie Phillips Bible,
Stephanie Samper, Rachelle Starr, Shasta Swift, Diana Walker and the

TEXAS BOARD OF ARCHITECTURAL EXAMINERS
Questions and Answers: New Interior Design Title Restrictions
Background.
Recently, design professionals across Texas might have heard about
developments at the Capitol regarding the use of the title “interior designer.”
There also has been chatter about court decisions on the same topic.
So to make recent developments intelligible, here is the story in a handy
Question-and-Answer format. But first, a quick summary of what, exactly,
has changed:
PREVIOUSLY, only a TBAE registrant could use the term “interior
designer” to advertise or describe him- or herself.
NOW, ONLY a TBAE registrant can use the term “registered interior
designer,” while use of the title “interior designer” is unrestricted.
More and more registered interior designers include “RID” with their
name and title on business cards, and we will follow suit in referring to
a registered interior designer as an RID. (Including RID in your “appellation,” as it’s known, isn’t a requirement—some professionals simply
think it’s a good way to demonstrate that they have, in fact, earned
state registration.)
Q: Did TBAE support the bill?
A: TBAE is a state agency, so it doesn’t take an active stance for or against
any bill. But TBAE did attend a stakeholder meeting to determine
support or opposition to the bill, and all stakeholders supported it.
Q: How does this bill relate to the lawsuit I heard about?
A: The new law takes care of the issues involved in that lawsuit, and
closes down the legal action.
Q: So did TBAE “lose” the lawsuit?
A: Absolutely not! The plaintiffs didn’t win, and TBAE didn’t lose. The
lawsuit was placed “on hold” while the legislature considered the bill,
and now the bill has become law. (Governor Perry signed the bill, HB
1484, into law on May 12th, and it became effective immediately.)
Q: What can a registered interior designer do, that a non-registered
one can’t?
A: First, an unregistered person cannot apply a professional seal to a
construction document—not even a seal that “looks like” the official
Registered Interior Designer seal that registrants use. (See Section
1053.160, Tex. Occ. Code Ann.)
Questions and Answers.
Q: What sets an RID apart from a nonregistered interior designer?
A: Here are a few things that draw a distinction between RIDs and nonregistrants:
• Nonregistrants may not apply a professional seal to construction documents; RIDs can. A professional seal is one way an RID can indicate
that his or her documents are prepared professionally, and that the
RID stands by them.
• RIDs must complete continuing education each year, including training
in accessibility and sustainable design; nonregistrants have no requirement.
• RIDs must undergo a criminal background check before earning and
renewing a license; nonregistrants have no requirement.
• RIDs provide an additional layer of assurance (via TBAE regulation) to
their clients.
• RIDs are required to display their certificate of registration in their
place of business; nonregistrants, of course, have no certificate to
display (and would be subject to TBAE enforcement for improperly
displaying an invalid one).
Q: Why was the law changed?
A: The new law draws a clearer distinction for consumers between those
licensed to perform interior design, and those who aren’t. Consumer
surveys seemed to show some confusion about that.
Angle • Texas Gulf Coast Chapter
16
Also, an RID is recognized by the Texas Department of Licensing and
Regulat ion (TDLR), along with architects, landscape architects, and
engineers, as a design professional who can submit his or her sealed
construction documents to TDLR for Texas Accessibility Standards
Review.
Finally, in an RID’s contract documents, a “statement of jurisdiction”
must appear. The statement alerts the RID’s client of an additional
layer of assurance (via TBAE regulation). A nonregistrant cannot include
such a statement, because of course TBAE has no jurisdiction over the
practice of nonregistrants. A nonregistrant’s client has one fewer outlet
to find satisfaction in the event of a disagreement.
Q: Did anything change regarding who can practice interior design?
A: No, nothing changed. Anyone can still practice interior design, just
like before.

HCC’s Mulligan Chair Draws Highest
Bid at 2009 ASID Golf Classic
By Kimberly Jeffery Spyker, HCC Student
With the 2009 ASID Texas Gulf Coast Chapter Golf
Classic looming, the call went out for students to create
“mulligan” chairs (redesigned or refurbished chairs) to
be sold to the highest bidder in a live auction at the
event. HCC Mulligan Chair team, Becky Demetriou,
Ariana Smetana, Amanda Lopez, Kimberly Jeffery
Spyker, Mona Draper and Associate Chair & Instructor
Dennis McNabb, we set about the task. The concept
was to use the meaning of a mulligan in golf to inspire
our chair’s design.
Wikipedia, a free online encyclopedia, defined the word
Mulligan as: “In golf, a mulligan is a retaken shot, usually
due to a previously errant one. Like “gimmes,” mulligans are strictly prohibited in the official rules of the
game, but are commonplace in social golf. This is also sometimes referred
to as a “do over.”
For those of you that have a golf crazed fanatic in the family as I do, you
know that if a golfer is asking for a mulligan, he or she is having a pretty
bad day on the course. With this information in mind, we set out on our
goal, keeping in mind that the more serious the golfer, the greater the
need for humor.
A Louis XVI style chair (with horrible pink and blue printed fabric circa
1985), was donated from the HCC design department. Astroturf was innovatively used as upholstery fabric. Knowing that if you’re having a bad
day on the course, you’ll likely spend some time in a
sand trap, we used sand textured paint on the exposed
arms and legs. Argyle fabric- a classic staple in golf
attire- was used to create machetes on the arms. Golf
balls and golf tees were used to simulate upholstery
tacks, and well used golf shoes were added on the front
feet of the chair. To finish it off, we acquired a pillow
from Goodwill for $2.44; after some washing, iron-on
letters and painting –yes painting- we had a coordinating pillow (with “HCC Interior Design” on one side,
and “Take a Mulligan” on the other). Perhaps a golfer
would sit here and have a scotch after a bad round.
With our design completed, and only $40 of our $50
budget spent, we were quite pleased and hoped everyone
would feel that it was in the spirit of a Mulligan. We
were happy to see the excitement over our chair before
dinner, and had high hopes for the live auction to follow. Four local schools
submitted chairs, but in the end, our Mulligan Chair received the highest
bid at auction. Maybe next year we’ll include the scotch!

ASID Student Career Day 2009
How to Seek and Find a Successful Design Career
What an exciting day, that started with a wonderful buffet in our breakfast sponsor’s showroom, Dauphin Sales. Opening remarks included
introduction to our current ASID board, and reminding everyone that
graduates can roll their student membership into professional allied for
just $75.00. Graduates do not miss out on this valuable opportunity.
Lauren McDermott Best Project Scholarship Winner Third Place $250
The Students give a BIG THANK YOU to all of our sponsors, volunteers and ASID TCCG that made these scholarships and this event
possible:
The Art Institute of Houston - Diamond Sponsor
Our first speaker Image Consultant Helen Perry was very effective starting
with a demonstration of what not to wear and how not to dress. After
removing her buck-teeth and wig she got down to the details of professional attire and manners. Visit www.helen-perry.com. Followed by
Susan Fruit, ASID of Susan Fruit Interiors topic was “Designing our
Future.” Mrs. Fruit outlined the steps necessary to become a successful
interior designer.
Our third present was Monica De Los Santos, Career Services Advisor
for the Interior design Department of The Art Institute, by displaying
and then deconstructing actual resumes she showed us how to apply the
correct steps in formatting our own resumes. Up next and batting a thousand was James O’Neill founder of O’Neill Hill & Associates now known
Inventure design. His topic, “Job Searching 101” and “Interviewing” what
to expect and how to interview.
Last but certainly not least Industry Partners extraordinaire Christa
Sharpe of Kravet and Sunbelt Window Film’s Ray Levy spoke about the
added value Industry Partners bring to any design practices design team.
Luncheon sponsor Peggy McGowan, ASID hosted us in her new showroom Kitchen and Bath Concepts. She spoke to the group about the latest
and future trends in the kitchen and bath industry.
From one to four the students broke in to three groups and made their
way around to the showrooms; tour organized by Denzel with The Houston
Design Center. During this tour time students that pre-registered for portfolio review, Resume Review, and/or private Image consulting excused
themselves from the tour to sit down with their appointments. Our fabulous Portfolio Panel consisted of two groups: James O’Neill principal of
Inventure Design, and Christa Sharp with Kravet and second group
Tracy Smith, RID with Morris Architects, Sheila Lyon, ASID with Sheila
Lyon Interiors, and Colene Joiner, ASID with Joiner Partnership, Inc.
At the end of the reviews the panels voted for the best Portfolio in their
group for a scholarship of $500 each. The second opportunity the students
had to earn scholarship money was to submit one of their best projects
without their name or school on it at a chance at $1000, $500, and $250
for first second and third place. After this info packed day we had the
students meet up in the ASID office for a farewell gift bag full of
goodies from many sponsors and the announcements of the scholarship Awards.
I am pleased to announce the following winners of the 2009 ASID
Student Career Day:

Chapter Update
By Sylvia Fullerton, ASID TGCC Communications Director
For the last five years, Dan Wallrath of Wallrath Custom Homes and a
member of Bay Area Builder Association. has been building homes
for injured marines and their families.
Natalie Kelly, ASID student chapter President of Sam Houston University
offered the services of her chapter to help with design and selecting materials for a new home of an injured marine. This would support the
families’ needs and the special needs of the husband who has physical
limitations.
Natalie, Nathanael Cook, Shannon Mathias, and Aimee Wetzel interviewed Scott and Heather Warsick, the new owners about their design
styles. This design team also visited their current home to record and
measure their furniture and to see what will not work and what more
they may still need for their new home which is a Chesmar Home being
built in The Tuscan Lakes subdivision of League City off I45S. Various
Houston companies are donating all items for this home.
At the Pasadena Fairgrounds during Memorial Weekend, proceeds were
given from a concert featuring many well known country stars as well
as dinners being given throughout this same weekend in which donated
money will go towards helping with the cost of this home.
This new home is in the framing stage and during the last week of May
the design team will begin shopping for flooring, cabinets and counter
tops.
Natalie expressed that this is an amazing opportunity for her school and
the design students involved. They as a whole feel very honored to be
working on this very special project.
We, too at ASID TGCC are very proud of the ASID Student Chapter at Sam
Houston University for this most unselfish outreach.

IP Message
By Christa Sharpe, Kravet/Lee Jofa Fabrics
Industry Partner Rep. to the Board
Exciting news! We have our first ‘IP Quick Look’
reference phone directory printed and ready for
all of our Designers to begin using. The phone
directory is included with this issue of the Angle
and the “Kick-Off Party” to introduce these to our IP members was on
June 18 and was graciously hosted by Melanie Dauphin-Brown/Dauphin
Sales.(next door to the ASID office at HDC). We were pleased that we’ve
been able to get a speaker from Nationals to come speak to our group
on the benefits of being an IP and what our organization can do for you!
This will be a great evening to get your advance copy of the ‘IP Quick
Look’ and network with other Industry Partners that can give you leads.
And as usual here are a few tips to boost your service quality, do this
visualization exercise:
Imagine what the perfect service interaction would be like. How would
the customer service rep feel as he or she talked with the customer? What
would the rep say? How would the customer feel during- and at the
end- of the conversation?
Reason: Once you have a clear picture in your mind of what ideal
customer service is like, you can strive to turn it into reality.
Another tip for when you communicate with customers on paper or email…taking a too formal or "official" approach may turn off your readers.
Follow these suggestions to warm up your messages:
• Ditch the corporate tone. Don't write "Information regarding our
products can be accessed via our web site." Better: "Log on to our web
site if you have questions about our products."
• Bring customers into the conversation. Avoid third-person phrases like
"All customers must......" Instead write: "you" and "we" statements.
Examples: "You need to...." and "We will...."
• Choose an active voice. Passive verbs create confusion, leaving your
readers unsure who should be doing what. Vague: "Payment must be
received before your order can be shipped." Clear: "You must send in
your payment or provide a credit card number before we can ship your
order to you.”
And now I have some news about a few of our current IP members that
I’d like you all to know about. This is an Industry Spotlight that affects
three of my very dear friends; Steve Addiego/G&S Draperies, Ray
Levy/Sunbelt Window Film, and Bruce Getschman/Relative Sound. I
wish them all success in this new endeavor!

Industry Partners Team Up

There has never been a more effective method
of marketing or selling your product than a good
referral. The best way to get a good strong referral
is to network with someone respected in your
industry.
Many Industry Partners focus on marketing to
ASID Designers. Others will network with other
IP members. Both work well and can be equally
valuable to your business.
