Food and Drink Centre of Excellence
We are pleased to announce our plans to create a dedicated food processing/manufacturing education and
training Centre of Excellence. The centre will support the training needs of the local food manufacturing and
processing industries and train people who wish to pursue a career in these industries. The new purpose built
centre will be located on our Park Crescent Campus and will open in September 2016. The centre will provide an
‘actual’ food manufacturing production line to support students and local businesses in the design, development
and manufacture of processed food products.
The centre will harness the specialist expertise of local businesses to help us shape our offer and deliver
training to full-time students, apprentices and adults in the workplace. The College already offers a
Maintenance Apprenticeship at Level 2 via the Engineering Manufacture
Apprenticeship. The new training Centre of Excellence will enable us to
specifically tailor this to the food industry. We are in the process of confirming
the additional programmes we will offer but if you are interested in a career in
this sector and would like to receive updates on the courses and
Apprenticeship opportunities we will be offering at Level 2 and Level 3 in the
first year.

getting to college
If you are a full-time student you can apply for a place on a college bus. The current fee for home to college
transport is £150 per year. This is a subsidised amount available to all, however the College will require evidence of
the household income. Additionally, if your household income is £25,000 or below you may be eligible for free
transport. The added bonus of travelling on a college bus is that we drop off and pick up right outside the College
entrance, so you only need to make your own way to and from your local pick-up point.
If there is no college bus route you may apply for a Stage Coach Smartcard if your house hold income is £25,000 or
below and you live over 2 miles away from college. If you live a long way from your nearest pick up point you
should contact your local county council who may provide additional transport assistance. If you receive this
additional support you may need to pay your local council a higher charge than £150 per year.
If you prefer to cycle, ride or drive, there is a secure area for bikes, motorcycles and also a free student car park, for
those who are more than 2 miles away from the College situated via the Eastfield Road entrance. Students can also
borrow bikes from the College for short journeys during the working day.

gcse english and maths
the importance of english and maths
Maths and English are central to work and life; success in these subjects is linked to better life chances and greater
achievement. It is government policy to enable as many young people as possible to improve their literacy and
numeracy with the aim of gaining a GCSE grade C or above in maths and English.
Achieving a good level of English and maths is important for young people to compete in today’s labour market. It
is clear from discussions with employers that GCSE is a qualification they trust and many use it to select employees.
However Functional Skills are emerging as qualifications that are valued by employers, learners and the education
and training sector.
For anyone wanting to continue their education at university, English and maths at
GCSE grade C or above is a standard requirement. For competitive courses universities
might request a grade B or above it these subjects.

could be just what you’re looking for
Our Apprenticeship team helps hundreds of people like you into free or subsidised work-based training with local
employers each year and works hard to ensure that you are in the right job with the level of support that you need.
What are Apprenticeships?
An Apprenticeship is a job with a development programme designed by employers in the relevant sector. This
allows apprentices to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience, along with functional and personal
skills, required for their immediate job and future career. These are achieved through a mix of learning in the
workplace, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practice and embed new skills in a real work context.
You, your employer and the College will agree an individual learning plan of what you are going to achieve and
how.
Earn while you learn
All apprentices must receive the appropriate national minimum wage. Apprentices will be paid for the time they
spend in college as well as at work. Many Apprenticeships have pay increases when milestones are reached.

ready to come to college?
happen
make it
Step 1: Take a moment and collect your
thoughts…
Make sure the course you are applying for is right for you.
See the ‘before you apply’ section on this page for more
help. This step is the most important when considering
any big decision, especially a decision about your future.
Before you fill out an application you need to find out
your predicted grades from your school. This will help
you to choose the correct level of course for you.
Step 2: How to apply
You have two options for applying for a course, either fill
out the application form at the back of this brochure,
there are some tips to help you fill out this form in this
section. Alternatively, you can apply for your chosen
course online.
Simply use the course search facility on the website at
www.peterborough.ac.uk. Each course will have an
apply online button, which will direct you to our online
application form. Once you have filled this in and
submitted, you will receive a confirmation email from us.
There is no problem if you have already applied to other
schools and colleges. It makes sense to have as many
options open to you as possible. Once you have sent us
your application, we will send you an acknowledgement
letter to let you know we’ve received it, and you will also
be invited to a welcome event.
Step 3: Come in for a chat –
the College Welcome Event
There really is no need to worry, it’s not as scary as it
seems! It’s an informal chat between you and a college
tutor. It is a good opportunity to find out more about us
and our facilities, as well as helping you to decide on the
right course.
Our advice is always impartial, and if, for any reason, we
think you would benefit from a course elsewhere, we will
always give you the details. At the end of the welcome
event and when the right course has been agreed you will
receive an offer of a place at the College which may be
provisional on your exam results and/or references etc.
Step 4: Exam results and enrolment
