COACH
INTERVIEW
Chris at the HPC continued...
Adam Barratclough and Patrick Howe coaching HPC players
Margi: So how did the Northumberland
HPC Start?
Margi: How has this funding helped the
Northumberland HPC?
Chris: It would be a good seven years ago.
After an LTA review, it was decided that there
should be centralised training for the talented
junior players in the region. Northumberland
decided to set up The Northumberland
Tennis Academy to provide training for the
County Teams and for players competing in
regional and national tournaments. Around
eighteen months later, when the LTA
launched their High Performance Centres
(HPC’s), we applied and were successful.
Chris: The Fixed Programme Funding has
enabled us to expand our coaching team as
well as introducing Nick Grantham and Joe
Wear, who take control of our strength and
conditioning side. We also have Peter Finlay,
our physio and involve experts in sport
psychology and video analysis.
Margi: Tell us more about the HPC’s.
Chris: There are 18 HPC’s throughout the
UK. Each one is given funding to subsidise
training programmes and to fund outstanding
players for their tennis costs, such as travel.
We still cater for County standard players but
we place a greater emphasis on developing
regional and national level players.
10
Margi: You mention that many of your players
travel to compete?
Margi: How do you work with your players?
Chris: The comprehensive coaching
programme we operate enables strong
relationships to be built between players and
the coaching team. They are able to work
together to help the players achieve their
long-term goals in the game. We take the
long-term view. When our U14 players win,
we are pleased for them. However at that
age, we want them to enjoy their tennis and
not get too down about their losses.
Margi: How about your older players?
Chris: The HPC takes a number of trips
abroad throughout the year with players who
are competing in U12 and U14 Team Europe
and ITF through to U18, then up to ATP and
WTA. We have travelled extensively through
Europe and as far as the Philippines and
Australia!
Chris: The U14 game is very different to the
competitive tennis played when a player
reaches mid to late teens. The physical aspect
of the game becomes more important, so
we work with our players to ensure a
smooth transition into the adult game. This
involves equipping them with more weapons
for competing successfully.
Margi: What do expect of your players?
Chris: We provide the structured sessions
but we expect our players to take ownership
of their own development.
Margi: How do your players balance tennis
and education?
Chris: Education is very important. No
matter how talented the player, they need
their education to fall back on. We place a
high priority on building strong relationships
with our parents and schools to help our
players achieve a good balance.
Margi: Are all your players at school?
Chris: No. We provide tutors for those
talented players, who are competing
extensively. This gives them more flexibility
with their studies. Arrangements for our HPC
players who would like access to tutors are
available on request.
“
Be performance
orientated not results
orientated. Always have
long-term goals to work
towards. Train at a high
intensity with as many
diļ¬€erent training
partners as possible.
Margi: And how do you manage your players’
expectations?
Chris: We always take the long-term view.
Junior players tend to get wrapped up in
achieving better ratings and ranking, but we
see these as a guide. We focus on what a
player needs to improve upon, whilst still
maintaining an enjoyment of the game.
Ambition and expectation have to be
realistically managed.
Margi: So how do promising players get into
the HPC?
Chris: In the U12 age group, promising
players are identified through the Mini Tennis
Talent Identification Programme run by Mike
Woods. Another route is through referral
from club coaches.
Margi: How much coaching do players have
at the HPC?
Chris: 20-30% of our players are on a fully
comprehensive weekly schedule. 70-80%
are access players, who have access to 2-3
squads per week at the HPC, but still have
coaching at their own local clubs.
Margi: And who is your coaching team?
Chris: Nigel Beavers is the Head
Performance Coach and delivers the majority
of squad work on a weekly basis to all age
groups. He also travels extensively with
individual players and teams.

COACH
INTERVIEW
Chris at the HPC continued...
Margi: How do you work with the local clubs?
Chris: We have an open invitation to all clubs
to get involved and come and see our
training sessions. We want to be in a situation
where we cater for talented players, who can
no longer be catered for by their local clubs.
It can be difficult for club coaches to meet all
the demands of the performance
environment, such as the travel and the
significant number of hours that have to be
given to individual players. So many great
coaches are introducing huge numbers of
young players to the game. I guess the HPC
is an exit route for a very small percentage of
their most talented players who want and
need to pursue their ambitions in a
performance environment.
Margi: And what advice to you have for up
and coming player?
Simon Telfer coaching HPC players
Patrick Howe is a Performance Coach
and was recently awarded the
Northumberland Performance Coach of the
Year award. He is a popular coach with a real
passion for the sport. Patrick has an extensive
knowledge of tennis statistics.
Simon Telfer is a Performance Coach,
who has been involved since the early days.
He coaches the mini tennis squads right
through to the performance programmes.
Sarah Gregg is the latest addition to the
coaching team and brings a wealth of
knowledge from playing at the highest levels
of the ladies game.
Adam Barratclough and Chris Whittle
are also valued members of the coaching staff
and also deliver programmes at other
centres.
Margi: Are there other ways that players can
get involved with the HPC?
Chris: Be performance orientated not results
orientated. Always have long-term goals to
work towards. Train at a high intensity with as
many different training partners as possible.
Chris: For 16-18 year olds, we run the AASE
Scheme. This is government-backed and
provides 12 hours of free training at the HPC
each week. Players need to have a rating of
6.1 and be taking 3 ‘A’ levels. Full details can
be found on the LTA website.
NOTE: Chris coaches Alex
Walker, who is featured on our
front cover and recently won the
British Tour in Nottingham.
Margi: And what about your coaching career?
Chris: I have been coaching at performance
level for 20 years, firstly in Newcastle and
then in Cornwall, where I was LTA
Performance Officer. Since returning to the
region in 1998, I have been involved with
coaching performance players at
Northumberland. I would love to name them
all, but there are too many to mention!

COACH INTERVIEW
Dave at
Virgin Active
Margi Tweedy finds out about tennis
coaching development at Virgin Active
14
Dave Boddy, Tennis Manager at Virgin Active
in Sunderland is very enthusiastic about the
coaching opportunities, which the Club’s
talented young players have been able to
access. He comments, “Top players like Amy
Hoburn and Jonny Binding have been able to
do their Level 1 coaching courses and are
soon to take their Level 2 qualification. Both
are now making a great contribution here,
working with our junior players”. Dave
explains that players can start with a Tennis
Leaders course when they are aged 14-16
and then progress to take their Level 1
coaching award when they are 16, followed
by the Level 2 course when they are 17.
Dave is passionate about coaching and
believes it is important for aspiring coaches to
spend time learning from good quality
coaches. When Dave was training to be a
coach, he spent time with Jim Mellor, his
coach and mentor at Scarborough. Dave also
identifies the important transition from playing

COACH
INTERVIEW
Dave at Virgin Active continued...
into coaching, “ Players love their tennis, but
coaching is not just about loving playing
tennis. A key aspect of coaching is being able
to relate to people of all ages, most of
whom, at first, you don’t actually know. But
for many aspiring tennis players, their first
experience of tennis is their first lesson with a
coach. If that is not a great experience, they
are not going to come back”.
Dave also stresses the importance of
coaches being able to provide coaching right
through from mini tennis to performance. He
advises against coaches becoming too
specialist too early, “ At a club like Virgin
Active here, we need coaches who can
deliver coaching for all our requirements,
from the mini red squad to the performance
players, from the adult beginner tennis player
to the training of the teams.
16
He also sees coaching as a great way for
young coaches to give something back to the
game as well as getting enjoyment and
earning some money. The coaching courses
are very practical. In addition to 3-5 days
attendance, depending on the course,
aspiring coaches have to work with their own
coach and mentor. Dave adds, “ Being a top
player is not a requirement to become a
coach, but having a passion for tennis and a
good understanding of the game is”. As a
tutor on the courses, Dave is in a very good
position to comment on what works. He also
advises budding coaches to visit the LTA
websites for Cumbria, Durham and
Cleveland and Northumberland to see when
courses are taking place and to register for
them. There are around six courses each
year and funding is available for some of the
courses through the Tony Blair Sport
Foundation.
When players have achieved their Level
2 awards, they can progress onto Level 3. It
is at this stage that they can become licensed
and make a living from their coaching. As
Dave endorses, “ You become licensed to
coach”.
At Virgin Active in Sunderland, there are
eight indoor courts and five outdoors.
Throughout the year, there is a full
programme of tennis coaching taking place to
meet all needs.
For further information, call
Virgin Active at 0191 5114400
One of Virgin
Active’s Young
Coaches –
Amy Hoburn
Amy Hoburn is one of the top Ladies
players in Northumberland. Not only
does she want to keep playing at a high
level, but she also wants to be a top
coach. She therefore, did her Tennis
Leaders training when she was fourteen,
her level 1 at 17 and is preparing to do
her Level 2 qualification in January.
As well as training to be a tennis
coach, Amy is actively involved with
coaching. In addition to working with the
talented junior players at Virgin Active,
Amy also supports John Henderson at
The Northumberland Club with their
mini red tennis programme.
Amy says, “ I love playing tennis and
I am also enjoying organizing
competitions. I regularly assist Jo Cunliffe
with the girl’s mini tennis programmes
and Christine Heppell with the mini
tennis competitions at Virgin Active most
Sundays”. That is, when Amy is not
competing, because Amy is also playing
tournaments on the British Tour and in
ITF events, which take place nearly every
week.
Amy hopes to combine her love of
playing and coaching with business and as
well as her playing and coaching
commitments, is also studying for a
Business degree. We wish Amy good luck
in her forthcoming tournaments, her
Level 2 coaching course and her degree.

COACH INTERVIEW
Jon has great year
at South Lakes
Margi Tweedy met up with Jon Griffin at Kendal
>>
oncourt magazine - Christmas 2011
19
Margi: South Lakes Tennis Academy seems to
be having a fantastic year. Tell us all about it?
Jon: The South Lakes area comprises of a lot
of small/medium size clubs, none of which
could individually sustain a full time coach.
Between myself and my assistant coach Max
Shaw we offer programmes bringing all the
players together training under the `South
Lakes’ banner.
2011 has been a great year for our
players both within Cumbria and beyond.
Our club teams have been dominating
Cumbrian tennis in the AEGON
20
competitions and our players individually
winning all the boys events at the recent
county closed (yellow ball) and also being
runners up in all the events as well. 75% of
the boys who represented Cumbria at
U12/U14/U18 County Cups in 2011 train
with us and in the last eight years 84% of all
boys county titles (U12-U18) have been won
by our squad players.
We also have a very good group of mini
tennis players who are starting to make their
mark again both inside and outside the
county.
Margi: Sounds great! – What does the South
Lakes Tennis Academy offer juniors in the
South Lakes and in Cumbria?
Jon: A full range of coaching / playing
opportunities are on offer whatever your
standard. Max offers a full development
programme and I run the performance side
with the programmes dove tailing each other
so that players have the opportunity to cross
from one pathway to the other.
COACH
INTERVIEW
Jon has great year at South Lakes continued...
Margi: And what do you think are the main
reasons for your players doing so well?
Jon: I think bringing players through as a
group rather than individually keeps training
competitive, more enjoyable and offers
variation. It also enables team events to be
played which provides a good squad spirit. It
is always good to see my younger squad
players looking up to the next age group and
likewise the older boys supporting the
younger squad members. It creates a real
tennis unity. One thing I have noticed often, is
where just one player evolves from a
location, they often fall away from the sport.
As they have nobody suitable to play/practice
with so they lose interest.
Margi: So what have been some of the best
performances from your players this year?
Jon: Sam Clarke winning the treble at the
County Closed (Under 14 Singles/ Doubles/
Mixed Doubles) playing at Wimbledon,
entering European Tour events and
representing the county at U14 & U18 level
has been impressive.
My newest squad, my under 8`s
maturing and developing is a personal
highlight for me, seeing the rapid
development and now seeing them compete
and doing well is very rewarding
Margi: And your son James has also had an
amazing year?
Jon: Yes he is still only 7, but has done well
improving his rating from Red 3 to Orange 2
in the last 12 months, which actually places
him joint 4th in the UK Ratings for 2004
boys. He is part of an 8 player squad who
train with me for 5 hours per week, all
working hard and pushing each other along.
His team won the AEGON U8 County title
this summer with James winning all 4 of his
matches in the final, which for a player with
12 months still left in the age group is
impressive.
oncourt magazine - Christmas 2011
“
“My newest squad, my
under 8`s maturing and
developing is a personal
highlight for me, seeing
the rapid development
and now seeing them
compete and doing well
is very rewarding”
Margi: Tell us about your own tennis career
and how you got into coaching?
Jon: An unusual story probably for a coach,
football was always my first love playing to
county level but dodgy knees (recently come
back to haunt me) meant a change of sport at
the age of 14. I had knocked balls about but
not taken tennis too seriously until then but
enjoyed it and soon progressed to a
reasonable level. A career in finance
beckoned but I took my basic coaching
badges and ended up at the age of 25 with
two full time jobs, Small Business Manager for
NatWest and Tennis Coaching. Something
had to go so goodbye banking, although I
have to say the knowledge gained in my 9
year banking career have certainly helped in
running my coaching business.
Margi: What have been your coaching
highlights?
Jon: That`s a difficult question, not one
stands out but 3 players reaching the UK
National main draws and twice having teams
reach the last 8 nationally in AEGON
competitions. The County U10 Boys team
coming R-Up to Cheshire in the 2001
County Cup Competition and coaching over
75 county champions are all contenders, but
I think the biggest highlight is seeing talented
4/5 year olds rapid progression into
competent players, I always find those early
years of players’ development when progress
is so quick, very rewarding.
Margi: How do you find coaching tennis in
such a beautiful part of the region?
Jon: Beautiful yes, but challenging also. There
are no nice indoor centres on our patch!
Floodlit coaching and working in school
sports halls, is the name of the game in South
Cumbria. One thing it certainly does though,
is toughen up our players mentally. They are
used to slippy courts in the wind, rain etc
Margi: And what is your coaching philosophy?
Jon: Simple, keep the ball in for longer than
your opponent and then as you develop as a
player, always strive to improve the quality of
the ball you hit in. But never forget the basic
principle (always seems to be a winning
tactic)!
Margi: So what do you think it takes to do
well in tennis?
Jon: Hard work, dedication and a good
mental attitude towards training.
Margi: What advice do you have for aspiring
young players in the South Lakes and
Cumbria?
Jon: Work hard at all areas of the game
technique/tactics/metal strength and fitness
are all equally important. But the most
important thing is to enjoy the sport.
Margi: And finally, if players are interested in
joining South Lakes Tennis Academy, what
standard do they need to be and what do
they need to do?
Jon: We offer a full coaching programme for
all standards, just get in touch with myself or
Max and we will organize a programme
which is right for them. >>

INTERVIEW
Jon has great year at South Lakes continued...
Jon receives Performance
Coach of the Year Award
Heversham Tennis Club's coach Jon Griffin has
received the prestigious Performance Coach of the
Year Award at the Cumbria County LTA's annual
awards ceremony at Penrith. LTA officers praised
Jon, who received the award from LTA Chief
Executive Roger Draper, for his successful
development of mini-tennis at the club with county
champions at Under 8 and runners-up in the Under
9 age group.
Jon said, “It is always nice to have your work
recognised and pick up an award, but without the
tremendous support given to me by the local clubs,
committees, players and parents, the strength of
tennis in South Lakes would not be possible.”
Heversham Chairman, Graham Honeybone
added, “This award for Jon has been thoroughly well
deserved. He is the driving force behind junior
development at our club and our regular successes
at local and county level are a reflection of the
outstanding work he has put in over the years.”
Jon receiving award from LTA Chief Executive Roger Draper.

GUIDE
Ian Wood Sports continued...
Ian Wood Sports has been trading for 31 years, not bad for a small business tucked
away within the complex of The Northumberland Club in Jesmond, Newcastle. Ian
Wood has been involved with tennis all his life, as a player, coach, tournament referee,
Club Manager and, ultimately, in 1980, as a retailer specializing in racquet sports.
Asked how the shop came into existence, Ian
explains how, as Manager of The
Northumberland Club in the early 1980’s, he
developed a network of suppliers of racquet
sports equipment for the Club and became
interested in the potential for running a shop
within the Club. In 1980 he resigned as Club
Manager to run his shop fulltime. It is open to
all – not just Club members and in due
course, word of mouth spread across the
North East.
The shop was very small then, and 31
years later, is not much bigger. Yet, as a
racquet sport specialist, Wood Sports
manages to stock the largest selection of
racquets around. The shop is stuffed, floor to
ceiling, with racquets, court equipment and
clothes for tennis, squash, badminton and
racket ball.
44
Undeterred by the lack of space, Ian
includes a racket repair and restringing service
in the shop. In this, he is supported part time
by Master Stringer, Paul Kennedy. Paul has
been the official stringer at Wimbledon, The
All England Badminton Championships and
The British Open Squash Championships, so
he knows a lot about the racket stringing
trade. Paul also does graphite repairs. Two
machines plus stringers, lots of stock and
customers, means it is often a bit of a scrum:
a friendly one, however with time, interest
and knowledgeable advice always on offer.
The Wood Sports Service has earned its
good reputation and, so far, even with
competition from the Internet, it manages to
survive in hard times. Three generations of
Woods are now involved – daughter Emma
and grandson Will. With their rapidly
increasing retailing and stringing skills and their
youthful enthusiasm, Wood Sports hopes to
continue offering good service and a fair deal
for many years to come.

SARAH’S
AMERICAN
INITIATIVE
continued...
Caitlin Hindmarsh
Since we last caught up with Sarah Borwell in
the spring, she has been very busy. After
working for the LTA, helping to place talented
young tennis players into American
Universities, Sarah has now set up her own
business – Tennis Smart.
Sarah explains about her exciting new
venture, “ The Tennis Smart approach is not
only to help our talented young tennis players
find the right American University, but also to
be involved with a player’s welfare, including
their training programmes, internships, etc.”
She is able to bring her vast experience of
American Universities to Tennis Smart as she
adds, “ I know the universities very well, the
type of coaches and I go and assess them all
personally. It is important that players
continue their training in America with
coaches who they like, feel comfortable with
and who understand their game”.
Tennis World’s Jo Garvey and Heather
Robinson, Jessica Courtnell and Cumbria’s
48
Daneika Borthwick are all currently on tennis
scholarships in the USA. Some of the region’s
top young tennis stars are heading there next
year. Durham & Cleveland ‘s Caitlin
Hindmarsh has signed up with Iowa
University and Sarah is helping her prepare.
Northumberland’s Ben Lott is planning to go
to Drake University in Iowa and Sam
Lemberger is considering a number of
options there. For the American Universities,
attracting the top tennis talent is a key factor
and accordingly they award the top
scholarships to those players who combine
top tennis and academic achievement.
Not only is Sarah very keen to see local
young tennis stars reach their tennis potential,
but she also places a strong emphasis on
them achieving a good education. In fact,
achieving good grades at GCSE and ‘A’ level is
vital to gain a place at the top tennis
universities. Sarah outlines the academic
requirements. “ A minimum of five GCSE’s is
required in maths, English, science, a social
science and another subject. What is also
very important is that the GCSE’s are
completed with a players own age group”.
Sarah can’t stress too strongly the need to
maintain a junior’s education alongside their
tennis, “ I see children pulled out of school to
concentrate on their tennis. When they want
Jo Garvey
Ben Lott
to get a tennis scholarship to an American University, they are devastated to find
out that they don’t have the academic qualifications to take them there”.
A player doesn’t just need GCSE’s. They also require a minimum of two
AS’s and two ‘A’ levels or equivalent. Sarah points out “ Look at Rafa! He was in
education until he was eighteen, His family believed that having a good
education has given him strong values, good organisational skills and an amazing
work ethic.”
So how will the American experience help our talented tennis stars with
their tennis careers? Sarah explains, “ The average age for a woman winning on
Tour is twenty-four and for a man, this has increased to twenty seven. What this
is telling us is that players are getting more experience before they are winning.
Having a tennis scholarship at an American University gives them amazing tennis
playing opportunities and build that experience”.
If parents are interested in the American University route, it is worth noting
that the whole process takes around eighteen months. Sarah supports players
and parents throughout this process, playing a huge role in matching players to
universities. When a shortlist of potential universities is reached, players are able
to visit their selected universities, which is all paid for. Sarah is on hand to liaise
with the player’s UK coach.
Once at University in the States, Sarah continues to provide support,
including a private Facebook page, regular visits, liaison with UK coaches and
help with the transition onto the Tour. For players wishing to continue their
studying, Sarah works closely with Durham University, who are offering
undergraduates the opportunity to play for their team whilst undertaking their
Masters degree for free.
Sarah provides the Tennis Smart service for only £750 for around five years
support. Her service unique and it is reassuring for parents to know that their
sons and daughters have such continuous support through their period in the
USA. For interested parents and players, Sarah provides a completely
confidential and personal service and is very happy to meet up initially at no
charge. For more information about Tennis Smart and to contact Sarah, visit her
new website at www.tennissmart.net.

“ Wow...fantastic news. Sam is both gobsmacked and delighted. He has
never won anything on this scale before and was recently joking after a
cold, wet night on court that he wished he could play in the sun,
somewhere warmer!”
Nigel Clarke, Sam’s Dad.
Sam will be telling us all about his week at SotoAcademy in on court.

STA October Camp!
SotoTennis
Academy was
packed out for the
October Halfterm Kids Camp!
Up to 30 performance players from
England came to Sotogrande for
intensive coaching on the STA European
red clay courts. Despite some
unseasonal showers during the week,
(made up for with a trip to Gibraltar and
some extra gym work!) it didn’t dampen
the spirits, and the week ended with a
fun tournament against the STA preacademy players that went on into the
night!
SotoTennis Academy is looking
forward to seeing North East players
again soon!

More Success
at Heversham
Heversham's tennis teams have once again
completed a successful season in the Kendal
and District Tennis League.
In the Mixed Division 1, Heversham (pictured) retained
their title in a close finish with Windermere and have now
won the title 11 times in the last 13 years. In the Mens
Division 1, Heversham's first team, composed mostly of
county juniors, were again comfortable winners and are
acquiring equally impressive statistics with 6 titles in the last
8 years. In the Ladies Division 1 however, Heversham
were once more narrowly beaten to the title by Lancaster.
Heversham Tennis Club have recently recorded
another success with mother and son pair Denise and
Matthew Brown winning the Mixed Doubles competition
in the Save the Children Finals Day tournament at the
LTA's prestigious National Tennis Centre, Roehampton.
Denise and Matthew gained entry to the tournament
as “lucky losers” having finished runners-up in Heversham's
own annual Save the Children Tournament in July. At
“
Roehampton, however, they proved to be “lucky winners”
turning the tables on Heversham's tournament winners Gill
Jack and Peter Metcalfe with a 7-5 semi-final victory and
following this up with a 6-2 win in the final over a couple
from Felixstowe.
With this success, Denise has capped an outstanding
personal season having won the ladies singles, doubles and
mixed doubles at Heversham's Club Tournament as well as
captaining the club's mixed team to the Division 1 title in
the Kendal and District Tennis League.
Denise said, “Matt and I were delighted to win this
title. Save the Children are a great organisation to work
with and next year we aim to expand the tournament at
Heversham to include mens and ladies doubles which will
provide some excellent local competition and raise more
money for this very worthy cause”.

North East Players Bring
7 Trophies Home!
5 players from the North East Visually Impaired
Tennis Club competed in the 4th Metro Tennis
Competition October 29-30 in London.
The competition took place at Islington
Tennis Centre and saw 24 visually impaired
competitors from around the country
competing for Ladies Singles / Doubles,
Men’s Singles / Doubles, Mixed Doubles and
Mixed VI and Sighted Doubles titles.
The North East players included Wendy
Glasper (Darlington), Adele Waterfall-Brown
(Darlington), Jonathan Nesbitt (Newcastle),
Rosie Pybus (Durham) and John Hawkins
(Middlesbrough). They have all been training
hard since Wendy and Adele set up the Club
last October at Sunderland Tennis Centre and
it has certainly paid off with the following
bringing back the trophies,
Special mention must go to Jonathan
Nesbitt who had an outstanding competition,
playing in great spirit, showing great
determination and smiling constantly. The
Newcastle based player certainly deserved
the crown of being ‘Player Of The
Competition’ and we wish him and all of the
players the best of luck with their continued
training and competing schedule.
What a weekend we all had. The
standard of play was amazing and everyone
thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Events don’t
simply happen over night and what the
Metro team continues to achieve is
outstanding and I feel really proud to have
played a part over the weekend. Roy and
everyone involved are certainly growing
British Tennis by ensuring that as many
people as possible experience our wonderful
game. We cannot wait for next year!”
