While doing these things you can discover many different parts of Chengdu, and China altogether. You will find that religion, environment and the surroundings, and work make up a big part of Chengdu. Firstly, religion is a HUGE part of Chengdu. Most people in Chengdu are Buddhist. One great thing to do in Chengdu is to visit the Le Shan Giant Buddha. This Buddha is carved into the side of Mount Lingyun and is overlooking the Minjiang, Qingyi, and Dadu rivers. The Giant Buddha takes the shape of Maitreya Buddha, who was a successor of the original Buddha. This Giant Buddha is called Giant for a reason! His shoulders are 28 meters wide, and he stands 71 meters high. His middle finger alone is about 8.3 meters, and his eyes are about as big as tables! When you hear about something this giant you would think that it would take hundreds of years to create, but really this Buddha only took about 90 years. The Buddha was started in 713 AD and finished in 803 AD. This Buddha is very old, and has been able to survive for so long because it has been well preserved for over 1,200 years. It is said that each dynasty has done something to help preserve this great Buddha. One other religious artifact is the Wenshu temple. This temple is China’s both most ancient and best preserved temple. The Wenshu Temple is the temple of the Buddha of wisdom. This temple also houses the headquarters of the Buddhist association of Sichuan. Another great aspect of Sichuan is the environment. Without the great environment that Chengdu has places like the Panda Research center could not exist. This Panda Research Center is located about 9 miles outside Chengdu. While at this research center you will get the chance to hold pandas. You will also be able to view research and exhibits that have been collected over time at the center. This research center is also home to both red and giant pandas. You can also see some fossils of pandas while at the Research Center. Conclusion I have learned many different things about china in this class that I would have never known otherwise. From the Leshan Giant Buddha to the different Chinese foods other than what we have here, these things are fun and interesting to learn about. I now feel confident that if I were to go to China I would be able speak to others and find my way around the country.
