NPA owns up to ‘execution’ of San Jose, Tarlac mayoral bet
BY DING CERVANTES
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO The New People’s Army (NPA)
has admitted responsibility for
the killing of San Jose, Tarlac
mayoral candidate Rudy
Abella of the Lakas-ChristianMuslim Democrats party in remote Sitio Sta. Cruz during a
political meeting in his town last
May 6.
In a statement, Jose Agtalon, spokesperson of the NPA in
Central Luzon, said Abella, who
is barangay chair of Burgos in
San Jose, was meted the death
penalty by the NPA’s Nelson
Mesina Command for his
“crimes against the people.”
“Abella was a former policeman, but he was more notorious
as member of the Monkees in
Central Luzon, especially in Tar-
lac in the 1970’s. The Monkees
were the notorious private army
of Eduardo ‘Danding’ Cojuangco during the dictatorship of USMarcos,” the NPA statement
said.
The NPA accused Abella of
being involved in “murders, massacres, rapes, intimidation, and
other crimes against the masses.”
The rebel group also said that
as barangay chair for 11 years,
Abella “was the mastermind of
a syndicate that terrorized in
many towns in Tarlac. The syndicate was responsible
for widespread cases of murder,
poaching of carabaos, extortion,
robbery and holdups.”
The NPA also accused Abella of being the “handler of a bandit group pretending to be NPA’s
so as to barge into homes, tie
up folk and hold them up.”
“His men are former guerrillas of the NPA who left and surrendered to the reactionary government.
These
men
include Crisanto dela Cruz alyas
Reggie or Bunso; Maring dela
Cruz alyas Clara; Kris Pitero alyas Lemuel; Randy Osorio alyas Ingkit; and Berting Osorio
alyas Alvin,” the NPA said.
The NPA also said that as
head of the Liga ng Barangay
in San Jose, Tarlac, Abella was
also active in “pushing for the
construction of the Balog-balog
Dam in Maamot, San Jose despite a resolution of the Sangguniang Bayan against the
project.” The project, the statement said, would adversely affect local farmers.
The statement also accused
Abella of being an “active and
avid supporter of the psywar operations of the Army’s 703rd
Brigade at 3rd Mechanical IB
also based in Burgos under
Oplan Bayanihan.”
The NPA said Abella’s may-
oral candidacy hinted of a “plan
of the US-Aquino regime and
other enemies to strengthen
warlords such as the Cojuangcos and intensify terrorism in the
province.”

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — Vessels coming into harbor at the
Subic Bay Freeport would feel doubly secure now, as the Subic
Bay Freeport Chamber of Commerce (SBFCC) installed a new vessel tracking system to help raise the level of safety in this maritime
port.
SBFCC president Danny Piano said the business locators’
group installed a new Automatic Identification System (AIS) antenna on May 2 at the iconic Lighthouse Marina Resort, which is
conveniently located to receive transceiver signals from ships entering or leaving Subic Bay.
Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Chairman Roberto Garcia
welcomed the initiative of the SBFCC and said the equipment would
complement the AIS that the SBMA, as manager of the maritime
port, has been using to effectively keep track of vessels within its
area, including those without any transmitters.
Piano said the additional AIS would help increase the level of
safety in Subic Bay, which is increasingly becoming a major maritime hub.
“Placing a new vessel tracking system will boost safety and
security, as it provides real-time data on ship positions and movements including arrival and departure information,” he also explained.
Piano said that the Lighthouse Marina Resort is a suitable location for the new AIS because it also has a tower equipped with a
blinking white light that serves as a guide for ships.
He added that vesseltracker.com, an international provider of
AIS services with a network of over 800 AIS receiver stations worldwide, is now the antenna partner of SBFCC in cooperation with
The Lighthouse Marina Resort.
The Automatic Identification System is used on ships and by
vessel traffic service outfits to identify and locate vessels by exchanging electronic data with other nearby ships, base stations
and satellites.
Vessels fitted with AIS transceivers and transponders can be
tracked by AIS base stations located along coast lines or, when
out of range of terrestrial networks, through a growing number of
satellites that are fitted with special AIS receivers which are capable of de-conflicting a large number of signatures.
AIS information supplements marine radar, which continues to
be the primary method of collision avoidance for water transport.

Coalition
group sees no
improvement
in last polls
BY DING CERVANTES
ANGELES CITY- While many people seemed to be
satisfied with how last Monday’s elections went, a
coalition group called Kontra Daya says otherwise.
“This 2013 elections revealed no improvement in
the process. With all these so-called modern, hightech and expensive equipment funded by taxpayers’ money, voters in the region still suffered and
inconvenienced,” said Kontra Daya regional coordinator Roman Polintan.
Polintan noted that early morning last Monday,
“PCOS machines malfunctioned in Angeles City,
Mabalacat City and Magalang town in Pampanga,
Tarlac City, Dagupan City in Pangasinan, Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija and Maria Aurora town in Aurora province.”
“Even in the afternoon, machines failed in precincts in Guagua and Magalang (Pampanga), Dagupan City. In Maria Aurora, the machine was even
tinkered by an incumbent councilor,” he noted.
Polintan said that the failure of PCOS machines
was coupled with defective ballots, as he cited a case
in Mabalacat “where they were moist” and another
case in Cabanatuan City where ballots were rejected due to their thickness.”
The group also reported that “elements of the
police and military illegally stayed around voting precincts, such as in Angeles City, where two army
personnel armed with high-powered rifles, and three
police are inside the premises of Sto. Rosario Elementary School.”
“In Dipaculao town, Aurora, a military personnel
in civilian clothes approached a precinct though he
was not a registered voter. In Barangay Tambac,
Dagupan City, elements of SWAT police were in the
vicinity of the precincts,” he said.
“If we are to look deeper in the last elections, an
orderly, honest and fraud-free elections still remain
a fantasy. The Comelec and the Aquino government
should be ashamed of promising electoral reforms
but disappointing the voters,” said Joseph Canlas,
another Kontra Daya-CL coordinator.
Canlas also decried “massive fraud and vote-buying” and the observation that “most of the
candidates belong to the rich and privileged class
such as landlords and compradors.”
“In the national and local elections, we hear same
names and see same faces, thus, the people remain in poverty and misery,” Canlas said.
Kontra Daya is a coalition of various groups
including Makabayang Koalisyon ng Mamamayan,
Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, Alyansa ng mga

Association , Anakbayan, League of Filipino Students, Promotion of Church Peoples’ Response,

also cast votes
CITY OF SAN FERNANDO - Some 4,000 jail inmates took part in last
Monday’s elections, the
Commission on Elections
(Comelec) here reported.
Comelec regional director Rafael Olaño said
the election in jails were
done in two modes.
The first was via a “special voting precinct inside
the provincial, city or municipal jail for 50 or
more voter-detainees,” he
said.
The second is for
jails with less than 50 voter-detainees who were instead escorted by personnel of the Bureau of Jail
and Management to their
respective precincts.

IT’S ALL over. Even the shouting. Even the last burst and bang of

Time for the joyful anatomy of victory and the dreadful autopsy
of defeat. Time for bragging rights over predictions come true and
embarrassing acceptance of failed, if fearful, forecasts. Albeit fast,
and furiously. Leaving deeper analyses to some future columns.
The Iglesia ni Cristo vote holding on to its primacy as tipping
point in the electoral contest in Angeles City – the margin of Mayor
Ed Pamintuan’s re-election over Cong Tarzan Lazatin, near-perfectly
corresponding to the bruited-about number of INC votes – 16,000 –
in the city.
The INC too spelling the come-from-behind victory of Coach
Yeng Guiao over cool Blueboy Nepomuceno in the first district in
the margin of some 20,000 votes in the partial, unofficial tally.
Serving also as one of the seven pillars that collapsed on and
buried re-electing 3rd District Rep. Dong Gonzales was the INC
bloc – now presumptive Cong. Oca Rodriguez making one on his
own, with President PNoy, the Pinedas, GMA, the mayors, and
the cause-oriented groups comprising the others.
Yeah, I was spared of my vow to kneel – even
prostrate myself – before Cong Dong if he won
his re-election against such impossible odds. For
then he would have most certainly been certified
as the greatest of the political gods hereabouts.
Perennial also-ran in the Arayat mayorship
Bon Alejandrino made it this time, with the INC
vote. And I said, if vaguely, in a televised preelection forecast that the once Huk supremo could
very well end his political losses in these
elections.
Failed I did in tagging Minalin’s Katoy Naguit
as shoo-in, the INC factor but one of several
considerations, for another win against
comebacking Edgar Flores.
Though, along with Jun Sula, I made some
definitive pronouncement – over CLTV-36 last
Tuesday – of a Rimpy Bondoc win in the fourth
district, I did some reconsideration and deemed
Candaba’s Jerry Pelayo “very much capable” of
upsetting the Harvard grad when John Lloyd
snatched the INC vote from him at the penultimate
hour. Still, the mastery of the Macabebe
champions over the Candaba upstarts prevailed.
The governorship, the vice governorship and
the second district congressional districts as
surveyed, as foretold, were no contest. No matter
the illusions and delusions uploaded – though
barely shared – in some facebook accounts of
the once and ever-running governor “already
gaining 47 percent” of the vote.
Aye, Among Ed’s running mate, Mai TiglaoCayanan having some 20,000 more votes than
him.
So how do we account for that difference?
Simple, more than 20,000 voted for Cayanan
with Lilia G. Pineda as their choice for governor?
To what can we attribute this?
That’s part of the anti-dynasty vote. They like
the mother but did not want the son to be spared
of a dynasty at the Capitol.
Got to end it here for now.
TODAY IN HISTORY
Pope John Paul II is shot
ON MAY 13, 1981, Pope John
Paul II is shot and wounded at
St. Peter's Square in Rome, Italy. Turkish terrorist Mehmet Ali
Agca, an escaped fugitive already convicted of a previous
murder, fired several shots at the
religious leader, two of which
wounded nearby tourists. Agca
was immediately captured.
Agca claimed that he had
planned to go to England to kill
the king but couldn't because it
turned out there was only a
queen and "Turks don't shoot
women." He also claimed to
have Palestinian connections,
although the PLO quickly denied
any involvement. Detectives believed that his confession had
been coached in order to throw
investigators offtrack.
When his trial began on July
20, 1981, Agca tried an unlikely
legal gambit: He maintained that
Italy did not have the right to
prosecute him since the crime
occurred at the Vatican. Although he threatened to go on a
hunger strike if his trial wasn't
shifted to a Vatican court, his
request was denied and he was
found guilty two days later. He
was sentenced to life in prison
but released in 2010 due to several amnesties and changes to
the penal code.
Many people argued that the
very unusual and short trial must
have been an effort to cover up
evidence of a conspiracy. In fact,
Italian authorities had their own
suspicions but did not want to
disclose them in a highly publicized trial. Instead, they conducted a relatively quiet investigation into the connection between Agca and Bulgaria's KGB-
connected intelligence agency.
The motive behind an alleged
Soviet-inspired assassination
must be viewed in the context of
the Cold War in 1981. Pope John
Paul II was Polish-born and openly supportive of the democratic
movement in that country. His
visit to Poland in 1979 worried the
Kremlin, which saw its hold on
Eastern Europe in danger.
Although the exact extent of
the conspiracy remains unknown today, Agca reportedly
met with Bulgarian spies Sergei
Antonov, Zhelio Vassilev, Todor
Aivazov, and Bekir Celenk in
Rome about assassinating Lech
Walesa, the Polish labor union
leader. However, this plan was
abandoned when Agca was offered $1.25 million to kill the
pope.

Regarding
Henry
Henrylito D. Tacio
YES, a person can have sex again – even after a heart attack.
Such assurance comes from a doctor who is a recipient of the
Outstanding Filipino Physician Award from the Department of
Health.
“A person who survives a heart attack that can sex again
provided he follows some precautions,” says Dr. Willie T. Ong, an
internist-cardiologist, who is an active consultant in cardiology at
the Manila Doctors Hospital and Makati Medical Center.
A heart attack happens when some of the heart’s blood supply
is suddenly and severely reduced or cut off, causing the heart
muscle to die because it is deprived of its oxygen supply.
“About two of three people who have heart attacks experience
intermittent chest pain, shortness of breath, or fatigue a few days
or weeks beforehand,” notes The Merck Manual of Medical
Information.
Generally, the most recognizable symptom of a heart attack is
pain in the middle of the chest that may spread to the back, jaw, or
left arm. Less often, the pain spreads to the right arm.
“During a heart attack, a person may become
restless, sweaty, and anxious and may
experience a sense of impending doom,” the
Merck manual informs. “The lips, hands, or feet
may turn slightly blue.”
A heart attack is a medical emergency. “Half
of deaths due to a heart attack occur in the first 3
to 4 hours after symptoms begin,” the Merck
manual points out. “The sooner treatment begins,
the better the chances of survival.”
Those who survive a heart attack are usually
wary of having sex with his partner. But the
chance of another heart attack during sex is a
myth. In fact, the chance “is so low that it’s not
worth worrying about,” says Dr. James E. Muller,
a researcher who published a 2000 study,
‘Triggering of Cardiac Events by Sexual Activity,’
in the American Journal of Cardiology. “The
absolute risk is very low and should not be a
consideration for those with stable coronary
disease,” he points out.
Of course, it’s normal for patients to have sex
less frequently in the weeks and months after a
heart attack. A patient has “no choice but to
abstain (from any sexual activity), by virtue of the
fact that he or she is still recovering from the
illness,” says Dr. Helen Ong-Garcia, a cardiologist
at the St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Generally, patients can resume sex after a
heart attack if they are “able to walk a couple of
flights of stairs, if they’re able to walk on a
treadmill, or do moderate-intensity activity without
any chest discomfort or without any severe
shortness of breath,” says Dr. Randal Thomas, a
preventive cardiologist and director of the
Cardiovascular Health Clinic at the Mayo Clinic.
The American Heart Association says a doctor
may prohibit sex among those who survived heart
attacks in the following instances: a few days after
a heart attack, bothersome chest pains, and
shortness of breath.
Dr. Ong advises patients with heart disease
or those who survived heart attacks to follow these
five tips before engaging in sexual acts:
Get a medical clearance first from your
doctor. After a heart attack, a cardiologist would
usually request a treadmill test (jogging while
being monitored by electrocardiogram). This test
would determine how much physical activity,
measured in metabolic equivalents (METS), a
patient is allowed before the oxygen supply to
the heart is hampered.
“During an orgasm, the heart rate dramatically
increases from 80 beats to 114-145 beats per
minute,” Dr. Ong says. “The blood pressure also
jumps by 40 millimeters of mercury, so a systolic
blood pressure of 130 can reach 170 during
climax.”
A person will expend 5 METS while having sex
with his wife, Dr. Ong informs. However, he
discourages those who survived a heart attack to
engage in sexual activities other than their wives.
Doing so would bring the energy level to 10 METS.
“The stress and excitement of having an
unfamiliar partner in unfamiliar territory is
equivalent to an hour of heavy cycling or rowing,”
Dr. Ong says. “This explains why some people
unceremoniously die in motels while ‘in action.’”
Ask the healthy partner to do the work.
“For more serious cases, the heart patient may
preferably lie on his or her back and let the
healthier spouse stay on top,” suggests Dr. Ong.
“It’s hard to imagine a post-heart attack patient
performing acrobatic maneuvers in bed.”
If both partners have heart problems, Dr. Ong
suggests that they practice “intimacy without sex.”
Do it in the morning. Here’s the reason why,
according to Dr. Ong: “Patients usually feel
stronger and healthier in the morning as compared
to the wearisome hours of the evening. Older
patients usually feel weaker and more tired as
the day goes by. So a ‘morning special’ may be
a good idea.”
Take a light meal only before sex. Some
motels advertise of three-hour use of their special
mirrored rooms, including a free steak and soda
for only P800. You better take note.
“Gorging on food immediately before making
love is not advisable because digesting food would
make the blood supply preferentially go to the
stomach and deprive the heart of much-needed
oxygen,” warns Dr. Ong. His friendly advice: “Take
your free meal after sex and not before.”
But for those who have already eaten, they
must waiting from one to three hours after eating
a meal before engaging in sexual activities. The
waiting time allows the digestion of food being
taken.
Don’t forget to take your medications. This
is very important. Usually, heart patients take
several pills like nitroglycerine to dilate the arteries
of the heart, and other pills for high blood pressure,
diabetes or cholesterol problems.
“Just continue taking your medications a few
hours before lovemaking as we want you to be
strong and protected,” Dr. Ong reminds. “Those
with chest pains should have their pills handy just
in case they feel something wrong. Be prepared.
Have all your pills, patches, gadgets and a glass
of water ready to go.”
What about those having problem with erectile
dysfunction or impotence? Can they take those
erection-enhancing medications? Although they
are not highly recommended, its intake remains
safe, as long at it is not taken at the same time
with nitroglycerin, physicians caution.
The US Food and Drug Authority warns that
the combination can send blood pressure
plummeting to unsafe levels and cause dizziness,
fainting, heart attack or stroke. “There have been
some reports of death,” says Dr. Thomas.
“Anybody who’s had a heart attack or heart surgery
should definitely be cleared through their doctor
before they think of using any of the medications
for sexual dysfunction.”
Dr. Edgardo E. Eba, consultant of the Cardiac
Rehabilitation at the Philippine Heart Center,
assures, “No one dies (by engaging in sexual
activity). Just don’t go into any sexual activity
without preparing yourself.”
I am not dying, not anymore than any of us are at any moment.
We run, hopefully as fast as we can, and then everyone must stop.
We can only choose how we handle the race. –Hugh Elliott

Matapos ang
halalan, ano ang
kailangan?
PAGLABAS ng isyung ito ay tapos na
Ang botohan, pero ang mga lokal na
Kandidato na siyang nanalo talaga
Itong ihahayag ng Comelec muna.
At posibleng ilang araw pa marahil
Bago iproklama itong halal nating
Nabigyan ng sobre, kundi man envelope

ang ginanyan niyan pati na ng handler niya, they will never heard the end of it!
he more na maging maramot sila, the more na kukulitin sila ng press! Respect begets respect kaya kung
gusto nilang irespeto, matuto rin silang rumespeto, ’no?
Lastly, if they can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen!!!
Hahaha, kilalang-kilala naming kayong dating magkabit, huh!
This time, ang
“I think I would rather act than… Of course, every week, sumasayaw kami, kumakanta sa Party Pilipinas pero
mas nagkakaroon ako ng contentment (sa acting),” saad ni Enzo nang aming makausap sa taping ng Kakambal
ni Eliana.
Dumating din kasi siya sa puntong frustrated sa
career.
“Yeah, na-frustrate ako. Sa three years ko sa
showbiz, I really… I didn’t know kung ano ba talaga
ang gagawin ko rito. Saan ba ako lulugar? Or what’s
the plan for me.
“Siguro, what I realized is to work hard. Ngayon,
sobrang dedicated ako. I can admit that before,
sige, hintay lang ako. Siguro I’m tired of it so nagfocus talaga ako sa acting. I showed everyone na
I am dedicated sa trabaho ko.
Xian Lim
“You can trust in me!” rason ng aktor.
Hindi ba naging negative sa kanya ’yung
pagkakaroon ng relasyon kay Louise delos Reyes?
“I don’t think so. Naa-appreciate ko ang lahat ng
experiences ko sa buhay. It made me. Mas marami
akong emosyon na nababaon because of my
experiences! Mas marami akong
napaghuhugutan. Hindi palagi ’yung
happy ang thoughts ko!” paliwanag
ni Enzo.
Walang away sina
Xian Lim at
Enchong Dee
EVERYONE knows Kim Chiu and
Maja Salvador are feuding after
Maja hooked up with Kim’s ex,
Gerald Anderson. They speak on
the set of “Ina Kapatid Anak” only
in front of the camera. Now
comes the report that their
leading men in the show, Xian Lim
and Enchong Dee, are also at odds
like them. At the presscon of
“Promil Pre-school i-Shine Talent
Camp 2,” Xian denies this.
“What happened was my fans
came to the set before Kim’s birthday
last month, bringing a lot of food to
surprise Kim,” he says. “E, bawal sa
production for fans to come and visit us.
Kaso, they spent a lot na for the
occasion, alangan namang palayasin ko
na lang sila. I told the production staff na
wag magalit sa’kin. Nandiyan na sila, wala
na akong magagawa, bumibisita lang sila.
Nagalit daw si Enchong because of that,
kasi his fans were not allowed on the set. Nagusap na kami ni Enchong and there’s no feud
between us. Some people just blew out of

At

araw sa pag-iinterbyu ng mga artista and now that the election campaign is over, back to normal na kami.
Makakausap na uli kami ng mga artista!
Of course, be wise in choosing your candidates.
