A merican ASSET S ociety of S houlder and E lbow T herapists SUMMER NEWSLETTER 2012 PRESIDENT’S REPORT With the majority of our membership in the middle of a record high summer heat, it sure sounds good to talk about spending a few days on the ocean! As you will read, registration for our Annual Meeting in Sea Island, GA is upon us. Chuck Thigpen, Kellie Bliven, Aaron Sciascia and their respective committee members have been diligently working to put together another wonderful program. We hope many of you will make plans to attend as this meeting is always the highlight of my year and is the cornerstone of our Society. See the updated information included in their articles to follow and submit your registration now! Currently, registration and abstract submission have opened for the 4th International Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists. The meeting is being held in Nagoya, Japan JOE KOSTUCH on April 10-12, 2013. ASSET members have played a critical role over the past decade PRESIDENT in helping to establish this International Congress, several of which currently serve on the International Board. It is with this in mind that ASSET would like continue our tradition of representing our Society at this International Congress by offsetting the conference registration fee for any Active Member whom would like to attend and present. The window for abstract submission and travel planning is upon us, so take time to visit the ICES at http://www.congre.co.jp/icses2013/icset/index.html to gather more information. Please contact myself at jkostuch@hprc.net should you wish to attend and ASSET will make every effort to assist you in your planning and representation of our Society. In the past, when there has been an International Congress, we have chosen some years to defer our „stateside‟ Annual Meeting. After much discussion the Executive Board has chosen to hold our Annual Meeting stateside in 2013. As per our tradition, we will be holding our Annual Meeting in conjunction with ASES Closed Meeting on October 12-15 at the Bellagio Resort in Las Vegas. Our growing membership, the travel required for the International Congress, the amount of time between meetings and the flourishing of the ICES have all factored into our decision to move forward with our stateside meeting in 2013. Mark the dates now! As of our Winter newsletter, we‟ve successfully transitioned our Executive Management to AAOS and have been delighted with their services. As our Society has grown significantly over the past 5 years, the full-time, experienced support afforded us by AAOS, has proven itself invaluable over the past 6 months. We look forward to expanding the scope of our involvement with AAOS over time to include greater financial back-end support and member tracking software. We hope to have the opportunity for you all to meet some of our AAOS support staff at our Annual Meeting in October. Once there, ASSET members can enroll in the course and enter the promo code: ASSETCUFF12 to receive the 50% discount. This discount applies to ASSET members only – please do not share this with co -workers, etc. REG WILCOX EDUCATION CHAIR Additionally, ERS and ASSET have arranged to share the profits from this online course so please promote this CEU option to colleagues to help meet their state requirements! ASSET Rotator Cuff Course in 2012: Plans are in place for this year‟s ASSET RC course on August 18, 2012 at Duke University. Registration is in full gear on the ASSET website. Many ASSET members have been actively involved to get this course planned. Many thanks to Aaron, Joe, June, Mark and Dr. Mallon. Post-Operative Rotator Cuff Guidelines: I am working on finishing up the cuff guidelines so that Chuck Thigpen, Brian Leggin, and Mike Shaffer can review prior to publication submission. We will be incorporating a decision making algorithm that Mike Shaffer and Brian Leggin have been working on. Total Shoulder Arthroplasty & Inverse Arthroplasty Guidelines: The goal is to have a draft of each ready for membership review by the 2012 ASSET annual meeting. We have previously asked all ASSET members to complete a survey to help us better understand current practice trends/expert opinion for patients following shoulder arthroplasty. To date 44 ASSET members have completed the survey. We received some great feedback both via the survey tool as well as via email/conversations about the survey. One of the biggest pieces of feedback received was that many members did not feel comfortable completing the survey (or parts of the survey) because they did not feel they were an expert on either TSA or rTSA. This has raised the issue/question about who we are as ASSET members. We may use the survey data as part of the manuscript for this project but feel we need to better describe who contributed to the survey data (i.e. what does the membership look like; years of experience, etc...) We have a few additional questions that will help us clarify the demographics of the survey member responders vs. member non-responders. There are 6 additional questions we would like to have you complete via a new survey monkey survey. Survey for those that completed the original survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/B8RX7Y3 Survey for those that did not complete the original survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KKSM7NG www.asset-usa.org ASSET NEWSLETTER Page 6 RESEARCH COMMITTEE REPORT We received 18 abstracts for the upcoming meeting ~ a big thank you to those members who submitted an abstract this year! All members were notified about abstract acceptance and presentation format. In addition to oral presentations, this year we are introducing two new formats: group discussion and a thematic poster session. Assistance and/or templates are available to anyone who needs it in developing presentation materials, just ask! Reminder: handouts of presentations should be submitted to Kellie Bliven KELLIE BLIVEN (kbliven@atsu.edu) by September 30, 2012. All abstracts and presentation handouts RESEARCH CHAIR will be available on the ASSET website prior to the meeting for members to access. We will not be providing paper handouts of presentations this year. I‟m looking forward to this meeting and all of the good information our members have to share with one another! MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE REPORT It has been seven months since our last newsletter and the membership committee has welcomed 9 new members. Our membership total as of July 05, 2012 is 106. This represents a growth of 13% in membership so far in 2012. Currently, there are 45 Active Members, 51 General Members, 9 Foreign Members, and 1 Affiliate Member. From January of 2011 to now our membership has increased 30%. We are excited about the continued growth of ASSET and our new members commitment‟s to our mission. As a specialty society, member contributions to the committees and the educational content of the annual meeting are vital to the strength and value of the organization. Please ERIC SAUERS consider how you can get more involved in advancing the mission of the Society. One MEMBERSHIP CHAIR way to do this is by recruiting other individuals with a passion for shoulder and elbow therapy to apply for membership. WWW.asset-usa.org www.asset-usa.org Page 9 Page 9 ASSET NEWSLETTER TREASURER’S REPORT Financially we continue to maintain our checking at just over $40,000 and our tracking well with respect to our 2012 budget. With the continued success of our annual CEU Conference along with the diligent planning of our past-presidents, we‟ve been able to continue keeping the registration for our Annual Conference reasonable. As 2012 has progressed with our new relationship with AAOS for Executive Management Services, we have been able to remain below our estimated budget for their services while experiencing the highest level of service. The Executive Board has been very happy with transition and will look at the possibility of expanding their services in 2013. We have continued a much appreciated revenue stream from our corporate sponsors, but our largest „non-dues‟ revenue sources have been our CEU Conference. As usual, our operating margins remain small so it remains the Board‟s highest goal to maintain the financial viability of the society. WILL CLARK TREASURER As our Annual Meeting approaches, I will be turning the Treasurer duties over to Kevin Laudner. I have appreciated my time on the board and look forward to continuing an active role in the society!
