Vocabulary Writing Assignment
Purpose
The purpose behind this assignment is to get you to practice and use the vocabulary from this
unit in a fun and educationally productive way. The more practice you have with the words,
the better you will understand them! This will make learning about economics much easier
because you will have a mastery of the key words from the unit.
What Are We Doing?
For this assignment, you will write a story about Gary the Grape and how he and his friends are
produced into grape jelly (something ALL grapes strive for!). Gary and his friends are very
excited to be made into jelly, but what I need you to do is tell me how that happens (hint:
PRODUCTION/CONSUMPTION CHAIN). You can be as creative in telling the story as you like, so
long as the story is accurate and follows the production/consumption chain.
Requirements




You must use at least 8 of the 12 vocabulary words from the unit in the story, and they
must be used CORRECTLY (ex: the demand for grape jelly was very high, so producers
decided to use Gary and his friends to supply the public). That was an extreme example,
but you get the idea.
Just like in the example above, the vocabulary words you use MUST BE UNDERLINED.
The story must accurately portray the Production/Consumption chain

What Are We Doing?
You are an aspiring young entrepreneur who is looking to make it big in the business world.
You recently moved to Salem, Virginia to start a business because of Virginia’s low tax rates on
small businesses. One of the requirements to start a business in Salem is you must write a
letter to the Mayor of Salem, Mayor Giancola, explaining the type of business you want to start
and why you think it would be good for the town. Also talk about how you as the business
owner would help Virginia stay active in international trade. BE CREATIVE in convincing the
mayor to let you open a new business in Salem!
Requirements

You must use at least 10 of the 15 vocabulary words from SOL 12 in the story, and they
must be used CORRECTLY (ex: I am starting a proprietorship making and trading chess
sets in Virginia, as well as selling my products around the world to globalize my
business). That was an extreme example, but you get the idea. A LIST OF THE WORDS IS
ON THE BACK OF THIS SHEET.

Just like in the example above, the vocabulary words you use MUST BE UNDERLINED.

The writing assignment must be IN THE FORM OF A LETTER.


Directions
You are the head of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, and the United
States economy is in crisis; paper money and coins no longer have ANY VALUE! Not only has
this hurt the citizens of the US, but the government can no longer collect taxes to provide
services to the nation. Because of your vast knowledge about the economy, currency, and the
money supply, President Obama has tasked you to write him or the government a letter with a
plan to create a new form of currency that will save the United States. You can use whatever
you want (rocks, new paper money, gold, silver, copper, etc.) to create the new form of money,
but you must EXPLAIN why you are using it. HELP SAVE THE UNITED STATES!!!
