This is your first English assignment for high school, and it is worth actual points toward
your English grade. This is also our first impression of you, so make it count!
Directions: Create sentences using each part of speech AND underline the part of speech.
Keep in mind that your sentence WILL have more than one part of speech, but for purposes
of this assignment, be sure to underline the part of speech that the assignment is calling for.
If you see terms that are unfamiliar, you should go online and look them up.
Assignment #1 Nouns: Nouns name a person, place, or thing. Nouns name things that
can be seen and touched (concrete) as well as those that cannot be seen or touched
(abstract).
a. Write 1 sentence with a common noun and underline it.
b. Write 1 sentence with a proper noun and underline it.
c. Write 1 sentence with an abstract noun and underline it.
d. Write 1 sentence with a concrete noun and underline it.
Assignment #2 Verbs: Verbs just might be the most important part of speech in the
English language. A verb is a word or set of words (verb phrase) that shows an action
(runs, is going, has been painting); feeling (loves, envies); or state of being (am, are, is,
have been, was, seem).
a. Write 1 sentence using an action verb and underline it.
b. Write 1 sentence using a linking verb and underline it.
c. Write 1 sentence with a verb phrase and underline the whole verb phrase.
d. Write 1 sentence with a helping verb and underline it.

questions What kind? Which one? How many? or How much? Articles are: A, An, and
The.

Assignment #4 Adverbs: Adverbs modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
Adverbs answer the questions Where? When? In What Way? or To What Extent?

Assignment #5 Prepositions: Prepositions relate a noun or pronoun that appears with it
to another word in the sentence. The first word of a prepositional phrase is always the
preposition, and the last word of a prepositional phrase is the object of the preposition
(noun or pronoun).
a. Write 1 sentence and underline the entire prepositional phrase.
b. Write 1 sentence and write the object of the preposition next to the sentence.
Assignment #6 Conjunctions: Conjunctions are words that connect other words or
groups of words.
a. Write 1 sentence using the conjunction AND.
b. Write 1 sentence using the correlative conjunction EITHER – OR.
c. Write 1 sentence using the subordinating conjunction BECAUSE.
Assignment #7 Pronouns: Pronouns are words that stand for nouns or for words that
take the place of nouns.
Use a pronoun in a sentence about your favorite hobby. Underline the pronoun and write out
the antecedent.
Ex) John loves to kayak with his friend.

*For EXTRA CREDIT write additional sentences where you use these different types of
pronouns: personal, intensive, reflexive, demonstrative, relative, interrogative, or indefinite.
Underline and identify the type of each pronoun you use.
Assignment #8 Interjections : Interjections are words that express feeling or emotion.
Use an interjection in a sentence about touching something that is scalding hot.
Ex) Ouch! The concrete is burning my feet.
Assignment #9 Subjects and Predicates: A sentence is a group of words with two main
parts: a subject and its predicate.
Write a 5-word sentence and draw a vertical line between the subject and the predicate. Label
the subject and predicate below the sentence.
Ex) Her long silver hair /was blowing around in the breeze.
