NHTI grad and skydiving fanatic
makes biggest jump of his life
Mike Meehan’s feet might be on the ground, but the sky’s the limit
for his manufacturing career
A
ccording to Marcus E. Mann of Turbocam International in Barrington,
NH, there is a $1 trillion backlog of manufacturing work in the global
aerospace industry, and his company intends to go after it. What’s
more, the company is looking to New Hampshire community college graduates
like NHTI’s Michael Meehan ’14 to help build a workforce that can support the
company’s growth and keep up with the swiftly evolving technologies that make
Turbocam a leading manufacturer for the aerospace, automotive, marine and
power generation markets.
Turbocam has hired 81 new employees in the last year, and Meehan is
one of the people it relies on in its recruiting process. Meehan has associate
degrees in mechanical engineering technology and manufacturing engineering
technology, and was hired by the company right after graduation last May.
So how did the gregarious engineering technician become a
representative of the growing company so quickly? One might say the former
skydiving instructor fell into the profession, but his employers say there was a
bit more to the process — and the candidate — than that.
“Mike has ambition and know-how,” says Mann, who met Meehan while
representing Turbocam at NHTI’s advanced manufacturing career fair last April.
“I was there when he picked up his application and again when he came back
to NHTI to recruit for us.”
Less than six months on the job and Meehan was back on the NHTI
campus to recruit more students. For his part, Meehan said he was “stoked to
go back and do it.”
“I’d come full circle,” he said, about being behind the recruiting table at
NHTI’s fall career fair. “For me it was pretty awesome to go there and catch up
with professors. I mean, I got a job — I’m working. It took a little while to sink
in. I did not see myself where I am now five months ago. I figured I’d be sky
diving, throwing job applications out, hoping maybe something would pop up.”
It took him 3.5 years to earn his degrees, but less than a month after
graduation to get into the workforce. Meehan said he pursued both degrees
so that he would be a well-rounded and flexible part of the production process.
“Mechanical engineers don’t do ‘this’ and manufacturing engineers don’t do
‘that,’” he said. “They have to go back and forth. I figured I might as well learn
both how to design parts and how they’re actually built.”
2014 Grad Mike Meehan
What of those who may not be convinced about opportunities in the
field? Meehan says advanced manufacturing offers fulfilling careers with
above average pay potential, but in turn candidates need technical skills.
“Manufacturing is a good place to start,” he says. “It’s not going away, even
with advanced technology. You always have to keep your mind fresh; you
can always go further than you are because there are no dead ends. But it’s
more than pushing buttons; you need skills. Education is important. One of
the things you hear is you’ll never use this stuff again: measurements and
statistics. But it’s everywhere.”
Meehan credits NHTI not only for connecting him directly with his
employer, but also for providing strong student supports as he learned
technical skills. “Some of the classes were difficult,” Meehan admitted, “but
there was always help at NHTI: the learning center, the math lab — you can
stay after class. Everyone is eager to give you a hand and help out, provided
you show some effort.”

Three NHTI Visual Arts students have learned what it’s like to find
success with their art in the “real world”!
Boy + Bear = Bucks!
Dan Tavis won a $100 scholarship, plus a $15 gift certificate, by submitting a sample of his artwork to a contest sponsored by Jerry's
Artarama. Dan writes, "Most of my paintings are straight out of my imagination. Many of the scenarios I create involve fearless
characters, oblivious towards the overwhelming odds stacked against them; making the viewer think, 'What's going to happen next?' I
love illustrating stories built around unusual friendships, an example being the Bear and the Boy. The bear could easily eat the boy for
a lunch time snack but instead, he'd much rather sit with the roaming traveler over a cup of tea."
Drawing the Dreamscape
Darby Upchurch, NH, was recently commissioned to create the CD cover for Dreamscape
Artwork by Dan Tavis
Starlight Rocker, the latest release from Trent (Radons Records)!
Darby writes, "Trent produces wide varieties and styles of music, but for the sake
of simplicity, we can narrow it down to Hardcore Techno, creating loud, fast beats to dreamy synths with splashes of
goofiness. I've actually been a fan of his music before they came to me. We met on a blogging site. I got an email one
day asking for a commission for a CD cover. They described what they wanted and I drew it, and then shortly after it was
a pretty album cover on Bandcamp and CD form. It was all really casual, and they were super nice.
"I was influenced by a lot of other online artists, concept art of video games, and cartoons. I was always drawn
to the brightly colored and unrealistic style. Designing the CD cover wasn't anything different than what I usually do. I
just drew an illustration, then Trent did the typography and cropping. A lot of my other illustrations were also very casual.
Most of them are clients asking me to draw their characters, which is one of my favorite things to draw. It may not sound
like a lot at first, but the gratitude that my clients show make it worthwhile and important."

NHTI Student Wins Year of Tution
Morgan Mackenzie, a 2014 Concord High School graduate, is a recipient of the Bonnie Newman Endowed Scholarship which provides one year’s tuition to a NH community college. Morgan is a student in NHTI’s Robotics and Automation Engineering Technology program.
“I came to an open house (at NHTI) and,
seeing how all the robots in the lab worked, I
fell in love with the idea of programming,” says
Morgan. “It was so much fun talking to NHTI
students — they were having fun. They were able to program robots that could
pick up objects and move them, using sensors and other technology. Seeing the
automation was really cool.”
