Berry Delahanty Richardson
1923-2007
Berry’s first summer at Camp Monomoy was 1924, and from that time through last
summer, she never missed a camp season. Along with raising her two sons, Bob and
Jim, Berry’s great driving force in life was her commitment to Monomoy and Wono,
The Cape Cod Sea Camps. She was very much her parents’ daughter, and shared
Captain and Mrs. Del’s firm belief that children could benefit tremendously from properly structured recreational activities, and that life at camp was not only a useful experience for a child, but was also, in and of itself, good. She was the ultimate camper!
Generations of campers and staff recognized her special leadership qualities, and benefited from her belief in every individual. She looked for the good, did her best to overlook everyone’s “growing pains,” and worked relentlessly to create camps where everyone was entitled to at least one second chance, and often more second chances than just
one. She viewed camp as her home, and welcomed everyone to it, as valued, important
guests. As she often filled her own house with large numbers of guests for memorable
parties, she also sought to fill the camps each summer with scores of children and staff
from different states and foreign countries, celebrating differences and highlighting
everyone’s commonalities to build a harmonious, dynamic, exhilarating camp community. Her skill in helping children overcome homesickness is legendary, and nothing
troubled her more than having to send someone home. But even in those rare cases
where her magic was insufficient to save the day, she looked to the next day and did
everything she could to have the child return a subsequent summer to find success.
After graduating from the Hanover, New Hampshire, public schools, Berry graduated
from Skidmore College. In 1947, she joined her parents in East Brewster to make camp
her full-time work. She was appointed Associate Director of Camp Wono, working
directly for Captain and Mrs. Del. In 1952, she was promoted to become Director of
Wono, a position she held until she succeeded her mother as Executive Director of
Camp Monomoy and Camp Wono upon Mrs. Del’s retirement in 1971. Berry recognized that her father’s axiom, “change is progress,” was as valid as it ever had been,
and she led the creation of one co-educational, residential camp on what had been the
Wono campus, and a resurgence of day camp offerings to complement the resident
camp. The result of her vision and leadership is the vital Cape Cod Sea Camps of
today, still serving children, and still imbued with the fundamental principles that were
part of her very first summer at Monomoy in West Harwich in 1924.
In addition to her work at CCSC, Berry held leadership positions over the years in both
the New England section and the national organization of the American Camp
Association (ACA). She was an early proponent of Camp Standards, and served as a
Camp Visitor for the ACA for many years. She was known for careful, insightful observations, and was famous for offering helpful advice to others in the camp business. For
many years, she was a member of the Brewster Finance Committee, she served as a
member of the Board of Trustees of The Latham School, was a Trustee of The Brewster
Conservation Trust, and made many other contributions to her communities.
On the last Sunday in April, Berry slipped away from this life quietly and with dignity
at her home next to camp. Her son Bob and the care givers who helped make her final
days comfortable were with her. She was able to look out over her pond to the fresh
waters of Cape Cod Bay, sources of life that had sustained and anchored her for so
many happy, productive years. She was at peace.
She is survived by her son, Robert Richardson, and his daughters, Kanchan, Maya, and
BB. Her younger son, Jim, and his son, predeceased her. She is also survived by her
nieces, great niece and nephews, and great-great nieces. And, of course, her legend lives
on in the memories of legions of children who knew her simply as their friend,

Nancy Garran
Camp Director
Dear Friends,
Our 85th Anniversary Year was filled with excited campers, enthusiastic staff and lots of wonderful adventures. The summer also
held bittersweet memories as we experienced our first summer
without Berry Richardson and her guiding influence of more than
60 years. In remembering Berry, I think of her generous spirit,
dynamic leadership and steadfast loyal dedication to family and
friends. She has left an indelible mark upon the businesses her parents founded in 1921, ushering them to their successful status
today and endearing her to thousands of campers and staff she
mentored throughout her years as Director and Executive
Director.
As the torch is passed to the third generation of the Delahanty
family, we four Delahanty cousins - Carol Baillie Austin, Mary
Jane Baillie Collins, Nancy Garran and Robert Richardson – are
committed to the work our grandparents began. Each one of us is
involved at the Board level, contributing our time and stewardship
of the businesses. We are also educating the fourth and fifth generations about the beliefs and principles of the family business
through participation on the Board, employment in the businesses, participation as a camper, counselor or a member of our family council. All of these strategies help to provide continuity from
one generation to another and a cohesiveness of purpose to the
original founding ideals of Capt. and Mrs. Del. Berry definitely
will be missed but the family legacy she helped nurture will thrive
and extend into the future.
When I recently asked Berry how she would like to be remembered, her quick reply with a hearty grin was – “The Afterglow.”
A fitting tribute since that is how I remember both my grandmother, Mrs. Del, and Berry at camp. Their silhouette standing in
front of the camp community on Cup Night while campers, staff
and parents listen to “The Afterglow”.
In loving remembrance for everyone who has gone before us –
Cheers!

THE AFTERGLOW
The day is doneIn golden splendor sinks the sun
Beyond the horizon in the distant west;
But radiance lingers onThe sky is overcast with shadows
That reflect the sun
As beaming rays illuminate the clouds
And they are bathed in radiant splendorCrimson, purple, orange, gold,
And deeper shadings
Far beyond descriptive powers of the mindThis radiance is not the sunset- - ‘Tis the afterglow.
Dear God, as I go home from camp,
Give me the afterglow.
May radiance of high moments linger onThe woodland warbling of a feathered choir,
The timid rabbit hopping into brush,
The rippling waters, and the cooling breeze;
The great, high moments with Thy presence real,
When spirit of the living God
Touched quickeningly mine own,
And challenges were anew.
Give me a lingering sense of friendship
From the friendships made in camp,
Give me remembrance of the things I learnedThe skills of hand and mindCreative values which can ever live.
Dear God, I’m leaving camp,
Give me the afterglow.
We encourage your connection throughout the year.
If you would like the current information for any
of our camping programs, please let us know.
Have a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.
From my council ring to yours,
Nancy W. Garran

R e p o r t
2007
This was a very good year for the Fund as we raised more than $40,000 bringing our Fund total close to the
$370,000 mark. This afforded us an opportunity to send 8 children to camp (CCSC Resident Camp, Monomoy
Day Camp and 4-H Camp Farley). We can only do this thanks to your generosity. As we continue to grow, we can
open more cabin doors to deserving and needy children who should have the chance to experience the wonder, joy
and excitement of a summer camp experience.

GWK Fundraiser raises $15,000
We had an absolutely great event on the Friday of our Alumni Weekend with a fundraiser at Ocean Edge for the
Grant W. Koch Scholarship Fund. With more than 150 people attending, we auctioned off a wide variety of prizes and
raised very close to $15,000. This was really fun and for a very worthy cause. We also had, for the first time, an online auction of these items and had several winners among that group.

office not having been here for 60 years and was immediately recognized by Rick Francis (M’45-CCSC’07). Bob had
been at Monomoy in 1945 with his brother Peter Ober.
Bob’s father had been a counselor at Monomoy in the late
20’s. Ed Garran (40’s) was also mentioned as Bob had gone
to prep school with Ed and was thrilled that Ed’s niece,
Nancy Garran (W’ born and been here ever since) was
involved with the camp. He wanted us to make sure that
our current charges are aware that the memories from camp
last a lifetime!! Bob Thomson (M’33-’45) is currently living
in Brooksville, ME and sent along his new email address.
So, if you want to say hello – get in touch with me. Roger
Shannon (M’47-’48) has finally gotten on our mailing list
and enjoys reading the newsletter. While he recollected Sue
Staropoli (W’44-‘49), he couldn’t identify too many others
in last year’s newsletter. But he does have vivid memories of
his baseball days with Ray Sterling and his introduction to
sailing aboard our Cape Cod Knockabouts. Rick Francis
emailed me that he had quite a conversation with Art Dodd
(M’40-’47) last January. He could remember how big Rick
was and how far he threw the ball.
50’s
Betty Eigo Golden (W’48-’55) is now living in Mashpee,
MA with her spouse. They have four grown children. Carol
O’Brien Irvine (W’40-’53) sent us the greatest CD of her 4
year old granddaughter singing Wono songs. As a matter of
fact, she has had all of her grandchildren learn Wono songs.
Very cute. Carol lives in Bethesda, MD. George Carney

Francis’s (W’ born at camp). Nancy is living in San
Francisco, CA. Nancy mentioned her brother Bill Leavens
who was at Monomoy at the same time that she was. She is
hoping that we have another reunion on the West Coast.
She enjoyed herself at Wono. Rick Francis (M’45-CCSC’07)
left a note on my desk the other day that he had been in
touch with a boyhood prep school friend of his who has
surfaced in Oregon. Whitney Ellis (M’45-’46) and his brother Bozie went to Monomoy. It was not clear that he enjoyed
Monomoy at the time. This past summer I got this nice note
from Susan McClure Harris (W’50’s for 4 to 5 years): “Hi!
I was at Camp Wono with my sister Betsey in the 50’s for 45 years running. We both have been back to visit. I now live
in Duxbury, a short distance away. Unfortunately cannot
attend the reunion weekend. However, I so enjoyed receiving the Newsletter
with pix of Berry
(who was engaged
while I was there) and
Nancy Greenberger
(who married while I
was there). One
evening recently one
of my best friends,
Betsey Evans Paige
and I, discovered that
she also had attended Lindsey Mead Russell with Michael.
Wono and her brothers, Monomoy. We were not there at the same time but
share many favorite memories. It is indeed a very special
place in the world due largely to the Delahanty family and
others who have continued their vision. I am honored to be
a part of its past and wish you all a special reunion weekend.” Michelle (Mushy) Dugas (W’55-’59) dropped in from
France at the end of the summer and spent quite a bit of
time with us in the Archives on the Big House sun porch.
She had great memories of Wono and was curious as to the
whereabouts of Carey Halperson. Carey’s brother Michael
was very helpful in guiding Michelle to Carey. Got quite an
email from Justin Wilson (M’52-’60) reacting to Rick
Francis’ “Monomoy Memories” piece in last year’s newsletter. Justin had his own list which he sent to his brothers
Tom Wilson (M’54-’61) and Chris Wilson (M’51-’59). He

the Wono’s – this is not to be passed by. There is a group of
Wono women with ties to the Cape called: Women Of

we were discussing the Braves unit in 1960 so anything
goes. Chris and I were in Cabin 10 together that year with
our counselor Alex Arnold (M’53-’64) and John Sullivan

others to Blueberry Pond to go fishing early one morning

We have heard from Jackie Dense Thomas (W’56-’65) that
she is living in North Carolina and has a 29 year old daughter. She would love to hear from her old cabin mates who
she spent so many great summers with. John Serruto (M’61’67) wrote about reading Rick Francis’ column of
Monomoy Memories in last year’s newsletter and how it
ignited so many wonderful thoughts of the six years he
spent at Camp Monomoy. A rare twist of fate recently
brought Michael Yogg (M’58-’63) together with Michael
Halperson (M’58-CCSC’07) at The New England
Conservatory of Music last February. Mike Yogg is busy
working in Boston in the investment industry and has just
written a book about Paul Cabot, the famous Boston
financier. Michael Halperson is just plain busy being
Michael Halperson. We see him at camp a lot. Candace

makes a point of stopping by. And speaking of John
Sullivan – we recently got a letter from Steve Pfeffer (M’61’62) who saw a picture of John in one of our Alumni
newsletters on the web. John was his counselor in the summer of 1961. Steve has nothing but good memories of that
summer in John’s cabin and he even sent along his Reports
Home from July and from August of that year. He hoped
John might like to read them and so we have sent them
along to John. He went back to Monomoy several summers
ago and even though it has become overgrown, he found sitting in the “Chapel” very enjoyable. Jessica Brilliant Keener

Saina Lekarczyk (CCSC’75-’76). She sent us a great personal newsletter about life in Moab, Utah. She is one very busy
woman. We still have great memories of Saina belly dancing. Debbie Glick Roseman (W’68-CCSC’79) sent us a nice
email. She reports that she actually looks forward to getting
the newsletter which we think is nice. She reflected on bringing her daughter to visit camp and not really running across
any of us relics who inhabit it. For that, I’m sorry, but these
things happen. She has been living in Fairfield, Ct for a
number of years, is a mother-in-law and was wondering on
the whereabouts of the Mansfield sisters (Joannie & Suzie).
Susan Hayes (W’75-’78) writes that she used to get the Jib

the many fond memories she has of camp. Susan is living in
Eastham, MA. Dave Peterson (M’) had a call from Jean
Grotzinger Bridges (W’65-CCSC’75) looking into camp for
her son. She is excited to be getting the newsletter and let us
know that her brother George passed away last year. Her
other brother John is well known as the geologist who discovered water on Mars and leads quite a globe traveling life.
Another missive from overseas comes to us from Denmark.
Finn Scheibye (M’72) emailed us to say hello and let us

sent to him and it brought back a lot of memories. His near
term goal is to ride in the Pan-Mass Challenge which we can
only encourage him to do. Bill Sims (M’60’s & 70’s) contacted us recently to see about donating a boat to GWK.
Although that proved difficult to do, it was a great gesture.

Chinman Getto (W’69-CCSC’74) dropped old friend
Melinda Mitchell Shumway (W’66-CCSC’75) a note mentioning that Melinda always looked the same in pictures of
her in the Jib Sheet. As well, the newsletter brings back
fond memories of camp. Her oldest son Jason has gotten
married. Amazing how they grow up. Received a copy of
Inside Westchester from Carolyn Millstein (wife of Jim
Millstein (M’63-’67) about Jeff Dunn (M’68-CCSC’74). Jeff,
as you may know, comes from a huge camp family with
father Mort Dunn (M’36-’43), brother Andy Dunn (M’68’72) and sister Dianne Dunn (W’66-CCSC’82) all having
gone to camp. The article is an interview with Jeff ( in 2/07
he was Nickelodeon’s COO) about children, their imagination and how they learn focusing on the role of camp in all
of that. The last paragraph in a question and answer format
goes like this:
Any final thoughts on camp?
The most amazing things is that I’m fifty
years old and I am still involved, and my father has
been involved for over sixty years. He still looks back

impact on who I am, a personal hero to me, a guy
whose mind and spirit meshed with what camp is all

wise and funny and all of the times when you needed
counsel, he was there. There’s that Latin expression – in

We have heard from Jon Barrengos (M’73-CCSC’83) again
about another move. He is now living in Hartford, CT with
his wife Kate and daughters Acadia and Eliot. Leslie

contribution Dr. Costa made to her understanding of pediatric care as well as the fun she had at camp. She is a public
health nurse and loves reading the newsletter!! Kerry
McIntyre (M’74-CCSC’84) updated his whereabouts information on our web site and is now living in Ellicott City,
MD. He is married and has a son. His most interesting news
was that his brother, Andy McIntyre (M’ –CCSC’) has
recently gotten married. Rusty Phelps (CCSC’83-’86) has
informed us that he is now living in Catonsville, MD with
the wife and three children. Had a nice interaction with
Alice Hafter (CCSC’79-’83) in her quest to acquire a watercolor through our online 85th Anniversary

in that he is living in Toronto. It’s nice that folks keep us
informed as to their whereabouts. I was just in Toronto visiting with Dave (M’71-CCSC’82) and Carey Holland
Burwick (CCSC’81-‘82) and their lovely children. David and
Carey helped me understand the true meaning of hockey!!
Chrissy Rubin (CCSC’86-’99) has dropped us a note mentioned that her father has always dropped off the Jib Sheet

East Coast living in Chappaqua, NY with her husband and
two children. We have heard from Dave Levin (CCSC’83’99) now Dr. Dave Levin. Dave is a chiropractor who has
taken over a practice in Croatia. While he is way over there,
he does like to know what is going on here. Not a bad idea.
He would love to hear from any of you. He is living in Pula,
Croatia. First Croatia and now Japan! Christopher Duffy
(CCSC’75-’83) touched base with us last year looking for
information on registering his son for camp this year. He
was pleased to know that Dave Peterson was still here.
Dave was one of the first people to meet him when he came
from Japan with Kohei Itoh (CCSC’)for his first summer.
Christopher lives in Toyko. Margot Hathaway Clifford
(CCSC’81-’83) has popped up living in Provincetown married to Barry Clifford (W’61). Barry worked for Walter
Sinervo which from what we understand was very interesting. Margot is in touch with Whitney Doherty (CCSC’) who
visits with her when she attends our alumni meetings on the
Cape. Margot wanted to be on the mailing list. Who would-

n’t?? Brett Schweizer (CCSC’85-’89) dropped us a note to
let us know he has been living in Atlanta for 7+ years and
would enjoy making contact with old camp friends from the
80’s. He is married and has 2 children. An April email contained a “shout out” to Henry Mack, Loren Abrams,
Hillary Liss, Andy Pratt, Adam Gould, Steve Andaloro, Jim
Kantor, Lisa Jacobson, Laura Farmanfarian, Ali Reza
Ategetchi, Matt Kane and “others”. It was from none other
than Andrew McGoey (CCSC’81-’84) and his request what
that he be emailed. So let me know if you want his email
address. Sue Williamson Greenwood (CCSC’85-’88)
dropped us a note to let us know she was living in
Burlington, Ontario and has two young children. Madeline
Drapkin Ezanno (CCSC’81-’86) has informed us that she is
living in West Tisbury on Martha’s Vineyard with her husband and child. She mentioned that she stays in touch with
Margot Hathaway Clifford and Whitney Doherty. She
would love to connect with Page Hurwitz, Heather Mori
in NYC. We like that kind of interest. Jeffrey Klein
(CCSC’83-’94) has reported in that he is now living in
Landenburg, PA. Suzanne Nolan (CCSC’79-’94) is married
and now living in Boston. Tim Foley (CCSC’89-’97) reports
in from Orange, FL that he is managing a restaurant in
Ponce Inlet, doing well and curious if we are ever having a
reunion in Florida. (Ed. Note – we are having a Florida
Reunion on Saturday January 19th) Michelle Riffelmacher
(CCSC’88-’99) is doing well and let us know that she is now
in Boston. Julie Harris Pfluger (CCSC’94) sent us note saying the even though she was only with us for one year, she
would love to get the newsletter. We agree. Julie is living in
New York City. Former JC Counselor, Robert Boleyn

was recently looking for Brian Lutes. How silly is that?
Paul Luby (M’72-CCSC’92) dropped us a line about his
time during our reunion spent at the Woodshed. Of course,
some were there with him. As the swallows return to
Capistrano. Lincoln Smith’s (CCSC’85-’88) dad has let us
know what Lincoln is up to and as well that he has enjoyed
reading our newsletter almost to the point where he feels
that he went to camp. Lincoln is living in Duluth, GA. Ellen
Monahan (CCSC’83-’86) has moved to Brewster and is
working for Cape Cod Healthcare. She would love to hear
from her old friends.
90’s
Amira Schumann Lachimia (CCSC’89-’99) has let us know
that she is currently living in Plymouth, MA. Emily
Lovecchio (CCSC’93-’98) has wandered down to the Big
Apple and can’t wait to find out when we are having events
tion. Good idea. He wants to catch up with folks at camp,
so if you want to catch up with him, just email me and I
will send you his particulars. Robert is living in West
Hollywood, CA. Julia Hand (CCSC’88-’92) is living in San
Francisco. Meghan Walsh (CCSC’90-’95) is desirous of
being connected to other campers from the cabins that she
was in for 5 seasons at camp. She is living is Oakland, CA
with her husband and new baby girl. Larissa Haynes
(CCSC’85-’97) is up in Portland, ME whereas Julie
Schlanger Davis is living in Eagle, ID with her husband and
two young children. Pondering that maybe she couldn’t
quite get the years that she was at camp right, Alexis
Topjian (CCSC’89-’92) decided to let us know where she
was and what she is up to. She is married, has a daughter,
lives in Wynnewood, PA and is struck by how fast time goes
by. On the other hand – Camp is like Brigadoon – every
thirteen years we come out of the mist and we’re all still
here. Having graduated from Bucknell University in January
of ’06, Matti Luik (CCSC’92-’98) has a fiancée, a house in
Bowie, MD and works for an animal rescue organization.
He says there is nothing like driving by CCSC every summer
when he visits the Cape. Liz Rubin Joubert (CCSC’83-’91)
has let us know she is living in Chicago with her husband
and two children. Recently we were informed by Michael
Halperson (M’58-CCSC’07) that Elizabeth Kieff, M.D.
(CCSC’93-’94) had been named a 2007 Laughlin Fellow by
the American College of Psychiatrists. She is the Chief
Resident of Consultation Liaison Service, Chief Resident of
the Emergency Psychiatry Service and Chief Resident for
Medical Student Education at the University of Chicago.
Very impressive and obviously a lot of work. It’s like being
on duty three nights in a row. (Only kidding!) Ryan Hurley
(CCSC’93-’94) would like to get in touch with his old cabin
mates so make the effort to say hello. He is living in Boston
and should probably come to our Boston Reunion. (That’s a

wrote saying that it had been a “LONGGGGG” time since
she had said hello. Both she and her brother Chris Mori
(CCSC’78-’84) live in Westport, Ct. Heather is raising her
daughter and son having worked in the fashion business.
Chris is working in NYC for a hedge fund. They both wanted to say hi to Sherry Mernick. As well they said they would
send a picture along which I haven’t seen, but I am patient.
We heard from Erin Finn (CCSC’89-’93), our former photography head, who joined in the bidding on the Silent
Auction for the GWK Fundraiser. She wanted Sims’s phone
number so he could watch the bidding for her. Mark Nilson
(CCSC/MDC ’82-’98) has touched base to let us know that
he is now in Atlanta, GA. Rachel Karp (CCSC’91-’98) was
sorry to have missed the 85th Anniversary celebration at
camp (as were many), however she was in the midst of buying a condo. So she was excused. Sasha Newman Newman
(CCSC’95-’99) is in California for a year with her husband
and is expecting her first child any day now. She missed
camp and the summer breeze. She is living in Lompoc, CA.
Sherry Mernick recently sent me an email of John Gargiulo’s

whereabouts of Emily Noble who we have living in
Stone Harbor, NJ. We are lacking any other information
about her, so if anyone knows her email etc., ship it off to
me. Miles Stubbs (CCSC’90) dropped David and Nancy a
note to let them/us know that he has moved to a Scottish
town with an incredibly long name. Apparently it’s also the
whiskey capital of the world. (Not necessarily a good combination). Former service Cup winner Duncan Seawell
(CCSC’88-’96) has announced a big move from Denver to
Hartford to complete an internship in psychology. Life has
been good in Denver, but he likes the idea of being on the
East Coast for a bit. He did say that Mrs. Campfire’s new
baby girl (aka David Seawell (CCSC’89-’94) is doing well
and is now almost a year old. Page Hurwitz (W’74-
CCSC’94) emailed us looking for Heather Mori. What a
hoot! We were able to send her Heather’s information
because Heather thought it timely to let us know where she
was. Amazing how this works. Holly Lemkau Doran
(CCSC’94-’98) has been interacting on Facebook with my
daughter Whitney Rauschenbach (CCSC’87-’00). She was
looking to get on the alumni list which we will do as soon
as we get her address.

external painting modifications are allowed to the pumpkin.
There is a motorized class, but it is the unfettered class that
is the “only class for self-respecting gourd navigators”
according to our expert Darren. Darren placed 15th in the
race, made the news and beat a couple of retired Boston
Bruins. As you can tell Darren doesn’t have a lot of spare
time on his hands. Darren goes on to say that next year the
field is wide open. Hannah Herzog (CCSC’97-’03) has let us
know she is living somewhere in Texas. And Alexandra
Hartz (CCSC’96-’05) is living in Haverford, PA. Michael
Sullivan (CCSC’92-’00) reports in from Beavercreek, OH
that things are fine. Jenny Brown (CCSC’94-’02 & ’07)
informed us she’d like to be on the mailing list. She is living
in NYC and closed off by saying “Thanks for the great summer!!” Finally, how can a summer go by without hearing
from “Three guys in bow-ties” star Derek Taff (CCSC’93’03). Derek is living in NYC. Dianna Lamb (CCSC’88-’02)
lives in NYC and wrote in to update her information so that
she can get the newsletter. Heard from Carolyn Schintzius
(CCSC’95-’04) who has seen a number of camp folks at
GW. They include Charlotte Bigford, Bridget Roach, Dave
Cheevers and Chelsea Cummings. Not a bad showing for
CCSC. Many have asked the great question – is there life
after the Early Show Orchestra?? Well we now know that
there is. We were very surprised this past summer to open
up the Boston Globe and see the lead story in the Arts and
Entertainment section to be about Maxwell Drummey
(CCSC’94-’02) and his band Chester French. Just out of
Harvard and into a music contract. Very exciting. But of
course, it must have been the Early Show.

MONOMOY DAY CAMP
THOUGHTS WHILE RIDING
SERVICE CUP WINNER
by Otis
Enough of the waiting around. I am so excited because it is
time to start hiring our Mighty Monomoy Day Camp staff
for the 2008 season. I anticipate a very sizeable return from
the great staff of ’07. Andrew ‘Crash’ Sims, an assistant
Director at the MMDC and MMDC Registrar, has just
informed me that we are approximately 85% full for this
coming summer. That means that come the first day of
camp and for the 7 weeks of camp we will have 300 plus
campers joining us each week. How exciting!
ROB DUNN: A THUMB NAIL SKETCH
Rob Dunn was the Mighty Monomoy Day Camp Service
Cup recipient for the camping season of 2007. Rob did an
outstanding job every minute of every day. Rob was
extremely steady, dependable beyond belief, and in his own
quiet and unselfish way was flawless in everything he did.
Rob comes from an incredible camp family. His grandfather
(Mort Dunn) was a counselor in the 1940 era, his dad
(Jeffrey Dunn) was Captain of the Junior Counselor
Training Program at the resident camp when Otis was the
head Counselor in the early 70’s, his aunt (Dianne Dunn)
was a counselor at the resident for 16 years, his uncle
(Andrew Dunn) was a camper and counselor at the resident
camp, and his brother (Chris Dunn) was a long standing
camper at the MMDC. All in all, The Dunn family was at
CCSC for a combined total of 57 years.
Rob attends the Middlesex School in Concord, MA. He is
very active in the school community serving as the coordinator of the Mock Trail Club, he is the editor of the student
run online newspaper, a Senior Proctor and in his spare
time he volunteers at a soup kitchen.

Favorite place visited: London
I'm afraid I don't know where I'm going to college yet.
I find that out in April
Other exciting news has to do with the PMC. Our 21-person 2007 CCSC/PMC team Schuyler raised over $100,000
dollars for the first time. Many of us on the team attended
the check presentation in Boston and were ecstatic to learn
that the event raised 33 MILLION dollars for cancer
research at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. For
all of you that provided the moral, psychological and financial support we all say a hearty THANK YOU. All of you
that volunteered in so many ways we appreciate you being
on our team. Our dream is that one-day cancer will be eliminated.
This fall we had many of our MMDC staff excel on the athletic field either as a player or as a coach. As a coach of 35
years I enjoyed following the progress of our athletes and
coaches. Lindsay Walker-Soccer at Middlebury; Jon BellockSoccer at Union College; Paul Coyle-Soccer at Dickinson;
Callie Lekas-field hockey at Wellesley College; Lydia
Gibson-field hockey at Saint Lawrence Univ.; Emily
Hackert-track coach at Washington and Jefferson Univ.;
Kerrie Francis-soccer coach at Barnstable High School; Phil
Greenwood-soccer at Tabor Academy; Craig Evans-coach at
The Rectory School; Pat Rowan-track at Springfield College;
Mary Sullivan-marching band at James Madison Univ;
Christy Harrington-cheerleader coach at Lafayette H.S.,
LA.; and Alexander Yellen-Capture the flag coach/streets of
Manhattan. I hope I did not miss any of our staff that did
participate this fall and congratulations.
I hope all of you are doing well. Hope to see all of you
campers and staff back at the Mighty Monomoy Day Camp
for the season of 2008.
Your friend, Otis.

Pan Mass
Challenge
PMC makes hundreds of people “Feel Good”.
2007
What started out in 1995 as a Cape Cod Sea Camps ‘Feel
Good’ event for a small handful of us has turned into a mystical event for hundreds. The first full weekend of August
each year is PMC (Pan Massachusetts Challenge) weekend
at CCSC. The event is precluded by many related activities.
Each resident camp unit conducts a PMC fundraiser; Billy
Starr, a Mighty Monomoy Day Camp (MMDC) parent,
founder of the PMC and CEO of the event speaks to our
staff and campers about the PMC; Debby Greenwood
(Resident camp Art Director) with many helpers prepares
displays to be used at da’ Hedge; and generally speaking
staff and campers at the Resident and at MDC gear up for
the event.
The event is billed as the largest and most productive participatory fundraiser in the world. (The 33 million dollars
turned over from the ’07 ride to the Dana Farber Cancer
Institute in Boston helps to solidify that claim). The PMC
involves 4,500 riders that travel from Sturbridge, MA to
Provincetown, MA, a distance of 200 miles, with an
overnight stay at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy
(MMA) in Bourne, MA. Our 21-person CCSC/PMC team
Schuyler topped the $100,000 mark this year for the first
time.
BUT…. What sets the CCSC involvement apart is that we
have hundreds of camp family members involved as volunteers or involved in one-way shape or form. The resident
staff and campers that are cheering at the front hedge a.k.a.
da’Hedge as “Spirit Managers” on the Sunday morning of
the ride (7 am to 10 am-500 total); the overnight crew
called the “Ladies Night Out Crew” at MMA that make
4,000 ‘Biker Buns’ (egg/bacon English Muffin sandwich) and
serve breakfast at 4 am (midnight to 7 am-40 total); the
crew called the “Lug Nuts” that load the 5,000 pieces of
luggage at MMA (3 am to 7 am-30 total); the crew called
the “Baggage Brigade” that unloads and distributes the same
5,000 pieces of luggage in P-Town (6am to 3 pm-100 total);
the crew at P-Town called the “Family Finish Folk” (6 am
to 3 pm-60 total); plus the innumerable number of individuals that give our team such unbridled support financially,
emotionally and spiritually. THANK YOU! It is a true ‘Feel
Good’ Experience for all.
Our CCSC/PMC ‘Team Schuyler’ rides for a young man
Schuyler O’Brien. He is a Brewster resident and a cancer
survivor. He is currently attends Nauset Regional High
School. He has additional CCSC ties as he works for Bruce
Riley at Linger Longer Cottages in the summer. The following article will appear in the PMC annual yearbook and is
about his Mom. Wendy O’Brien is the founder and member
of the “Ladies Night Out Crew”.
High fives all around!!

85th Reunion News
The 85th Reunion was a great weekend of fun, sailing,
rekindling old friendships, sharing stories and basking in the
radiance of camp. With close to 400 different alums attending the GWK Scholarship Fund event on Friday night, the
activities on Saturday, the Saturday Banquet and the Sunday
Chapel service at the old Monomoy site – it was really a
great weekend. And we are very excited to think that four
years from now will be the 90th Anniversary of CCSC.

Service Cup Winners Reception:
Captains of the JC Corps - Megan Corcoran and Matt Fitzgerald were featured speakers at the Banquet.
17 Former Resident and Day Camp Service Cup winners attended a
reception at the Big House before the Banquet.
Banquet:
More than 200 people crowded under the tent on the front
field at Camp for the 85th Reunion Banquet. With
Delahanty family members Nancy Garran, Carol Austin,
Kanchan and Maya Richardson participating, we had a
wonderful time. The keynote speaker of the dinner was
Stephen Wallace – author, national figure on student and
teenage issues, and Director of our Junior Counselor
Program. His talk was humorous and inspirational. Stephen
was preceded by a splendid talk by the Monomoy and
Wono Captains of the JC Corps, Megan Corcoran and Matt
Fitzgerald.

Group Business Report
Most notably is my dear friend, Berry. This time last year I
would be busy at her home preparing for the holidays –
making merry. But as you all know, ANY time of year we
were all greeted with her smile and her generous and warm
welcome. I hold on to that spirit I’ve met at her door and
hope that you will, too.
Please accept my sincere good wishes for you and your loved
ones for the year to come. It would be so nice to see you
here whether it is a quick hello while you are on-Cape for a
business meeting, sending a family member of yours to camp
or even bringing a school group here in our off-season.
Best regards, Cheryl
Dear Cape Cod Sea Camps Alumni,
I had the good fortune to see many of you at the Cape Cod
Sea Camps 85th Reunion this past summer. It was fun to
have that beautiful tent on the front field and have so many
CCSC Alumni attend – right in the middle of the summer!
The history of the Group Business is worth knowing, too. It
officially got started in 1976, although we had a variety of
schools like Boston Bouve use our grounds earlier. Our first
customer that year, and every summer after that, was The
Cape Cod Field Hockey and Lacrosse Camp! The camp was
under the direction of Eleanor Gaffney in the earlier years,
but is now run by Lisette “Lee” Walter. I’ve had the opportunity to work with Lee since I first worked directly with
Groups in 1990 and have become better friends with her
over the years.
Many of those groups from the first couple of years of the
Group Business are still here or return occasionally –
Landmark School, Sage Park Middle School, Park Street
Church, Mosier Elementary (now called Michael E Smith
Middle School), College of St Rose, Lincoln Primary School,
Saint David’s School – to name a few. We have had thousands of children, adults, athletes, scholars, philanthropists,
bike riders, walkers and you name it use our grounds over
the past 30 years. Both Garran (who works the Group
Business with me) and I are excited about the past and look
forward to the future.
Still looking back a bit, I see Henri’s handwriting in the
early paperwork that started us in the business in the mid70s and I also see Jinny Bahr’s presence in the development
of it. Jinny hired me in 1980 and I’ve been here ever since.
This past spring we were contacted by Jinny’s sons, John
and Clint, with the sad news of her passing. I will always be
grateful not just for the opportunity she gave me to work
here - although that itself would be plenty to be grateful for
– but I am thankful for the skills and knowledge that I
gained from working with her. She and I had a lot of fun, a
lot of laughs together. I learned so much from her about
camp and about life. What a fabulous way to begin my
association with the Cape Cod Sea Camps!
Certainly, Camp has lost a surprisingly high number of
Alumni this year. I could write a book about each one!
PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO LOOK AT OUR NEW
GROUP WEBSITE!!
We are pleased to announce that the Group Business now
has its own website.

Remember Inspection at Colors??
The Legend of Wampum
As many of you know – Wampum is a very big thing at camp in the summer – particularly on Sunday nights at the Early Show. We thought you would find this explanation of its origins interesting. It was handed out at the wedding of Garran and Christie
Peterson last year
The spiritual significance and status of Wampum was important to native people. The
English assumed it was a medium of monetary exchange, but Wampum had wide and
varied cultural meanings, encompassing every aspect of native life. Wampum was used
for ornamentations, tribute, prizes for victory in games or sport, incentives to maintain
peace or to wage war, presents between friends and marriage proposals. When an
Indian man wished to propose marriage, he presented his intended with presents crafted of wampum. If she accepted the gifts, the couple was considered engaged. The suitor would also present his future in-laws with a certain measurement of wampum.
When consent was granted by the sachem, the couple’s hands were joined together and
they became man and wife. Truly, Wampum was a declaration of friendship, loyalty
and important gift-giving. The white of the shell refers to the pure of heart of the giver
and the blue or purple to the honesty of intentions. In many instances, once wampum
had been exchanged between two or more tribes, they were allies who supported each
other in danger and adversity.

Passing
Gene Whitman, former Camp Monomoy counselor, passed
away in early January of last year. He was an investment
banker who ran his own firm and was very successful. While
attending Brown and working at Monomoy he met a counselor from Wono, Daphne Tewksbury, who he later married.
They were married for 46 years. He is survived by his wife
and daughter.
Toby Wesselhoeft (M’56-’61) passed away this past April.
Toby was a great guy who worked as a physician in Boston
for a number of years. He is well remembered for his road
trip back to Camp Monomoy several years ago with several
of his friends. He chronicled the event and it wound up as a
story in this newsletter.
Mary Ann Hembrough (CCSC’00-’02) who worked in our
Health Center as a nurse recently passed away. She had
worked at Cape Cod Tech and is survived by her son, Sean
Knight. She was a very upbeat, positive person who always
smiled and viewed life through strongly tinted rose glasses.
She will be missed.
Robert Tracy (M’60-CCSC’74)
Yvonne Peloquin (M’72-CCSC’90) passed away this past
September in Woonsocket, RI. Yvonne was a fixture at camp
for decades having worked as a secretary at Camp Monomoy
for 25 years and then enjoying the beauty of the camp beach
with her husband Marcel, who served as the maitre’d of the
camp dining hall. She is survived by her husband Marcel and
her children, all campers, Marc, John and Michelle.
Robert Tracy (M’60-CCSC’74) passed away in June in New
York City several weeks after Berry at the age of 52. He was
a prolific dance writer publishing a number of well regarded
books on the dance including: Balanchine’s Ballerinas:
Conversations With the Muses; Goddess: Martha Graham’s
Dancers Remember and Ailey Spirit: The Journey of an
American Dance Company. He was the son of Helen and
Frank Tracy and brother of Mary Ellen and Francis. He was
a serious presence in the extended camp family and will be
sorely missed. He is survived by his brother and sister.
Ginny Bahr (M-mid 60’s to CCSC’79)
Ginny Bahr (Mid 60’s to CCSC’ 83) passed away this past
spring and left a large hole in the hearts and minds of many
people in the camp family who remember the rich presence
that she brought each and every day to the Camp office. She
and her dog, Puppy Love, provided countless memories to
campers, parents and staff who laughed and cried with her.
