Memorial
Day
is a US Federal holiday
which is celebrated every year on the last Monday of
May. Memorial Day is a day for remembering the men
and women who died while serving in the United States
Armed Forces. Formerly known as Decorations Day, it
originated after the Civil War to commemorate the Union
and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War. By the
20th century, Memorial Day had been extended to honor
all Americans who have died while in military service.
Take some time today to remember all of the brave
men and women who have sacrificed to keep us free.
Information of Importance and Where to Find It
Story Medical Senior Care, by law, must display several important documents in an accessible location
for you to read. These documents include the latest State Survey, the list of the Resident Advocate
Committee members, and the list of staff working on each shift.
These names, numbers, and information are displayed on the bulletin board in the hall on both floors
and by the nurses’ stations on each floor. Please ask someone to help you locate these bulletins if you’d
like to see them.
Our Social Worker, Susan Koehler, has copies of legal papers like living wills and Durable Power of
Attorney. Susan can also assist families with Title 19 applications and answer many other questions
or provide assistance with where to find that information. You can reach Susan at ext. 7014. This
information is also available online at; www.iowabar.org.
Mother
If I could give you diamonds
For each tear you cried for me.
If I could give you sapphires
For each truth you’ve helped me see.
If I could give you rubies
For the heartache that you’ve known
If I could give you pearls
For the wisdom that you’ve shown.
Then you’ll have a treasure, mother,
That would mount up to the skies
That would almost match
The sparkles in your kind and loving eyes.
But I have no pearls, no diamonds,
As I’m sure you’re well aware
So I’ll give you gifts more precious
My devotion, love and care.

Karen Zagcew
Karen is the new Director of Food & Nutrition Services at Story
Medical and is also an Executive Chef. She has been developing
our Food & Nutrition Services department to be even better. Some
improvements you will notice are new menus for each season
featuring more fresh fruit and other new, healthy seasonal options.
Currently, dietary staff and Advocates are conducting a dietary
survey. Residents, if you have suggestions, please feel free to let the
staff know, and we will be glad to pass this along. Karen would like
residents, staff and visitors that her door is always open.
Join me in welcoming Karen to our family here at Story Medical.

100 Good Deeds
Thomas Morgan created a wonderful game with his family called 100 Good Deeds. His daughter Kylee
would receive a bead when she performed a good deed, she would tie them in to her shoe laces and
other creative places.
Soon, she started a club called the 100 Good Deeds Club. Her friends got together and collected items
for a homeless shelter. They collected the little soaps and shampoos you get at the hotel when you travel
and other personal items. The teens made packets up and delivered them to the shelters.
Making a difference doesn’t have to start with something as large as Kylee’s packets for the homeless
shelters. Incredible differences can be made one small deed at a time.
“A ‘good deed’ means we have gone out of our way to help someone, and it only counts if the deed
remains anonymous,” Kyle’s dad says. “This is so it is not about you, but about the people you help. The
reward is in the doing, and the satisfaction that comes from knowing you made a difference.”
Advocate Mary Fisher has launched a world wide movement based on Thomas and Kylee’s idea. The 100
Good Deeds bracelets are now being made in impoverished areas in countries like Africa, empowering
people in those vulnerable communities.
What a great way to get your children involved in the community, or wherever there is a need. People
of all ages can participate in this great initiative. Perhaps the kids of Story County can start a cool new
trend of giving! I’ll be on the lookout for those beads.

Monty Woodward
Monty is a new volunteer at Story Medical. He is a retired
social worker, Veteran and has a masters degree in Theology.
Monty has known our social worker, Susan Koehler, for many
years, and his wife worked with us as well. He is a friendly,
easy going guy and you will see him around Senior Care a lot.
Monty is visiting individually with some of our residents and
talking with the Veterans who have had similar experiences. He reads daily devotionals as well.
It is my pleasure to welcome Monty. We are so blessed that he has joined
the Story Medical family.

Medical Center Week
at Story Medical
May 11 - 17, 2014
A medical center is just a few buildings until you fill them with people. Then
it transforms into an extraordinary place of service, teamwork, openness and
relationships. We never forget that it’s our people - our employees, patients,
residents, and visitors - who write our story.
During Medical Center Week we’re celebrating the whole Story Medical family.
We have a full week of celebration planned. Please feel free to join us!
Sunday, May 11 (Mother’s Day)
• Carnations for employees, patients, residents, and visitors - all week
Monday, May 12
• Community Service Day - please donate non-perishable food to the United Way of Story County,
there will be boxes set up in all of our buildings.
Tuesday, May 13
• Team Dress-up Day - Do you have a favorite “team”? Sonny and Cher? The Adams Family? The
Chicago Cubs? Get one or more of your friends together and dress up as your favorite team!
Wednesday, May 14
• Medical Center Week BBQ, come one, come all! This BBQ is open to the public at all of our locations
Thursday, May 15
• Chamber Mix & Mingle, 5 to 7 p.m., South Campus
Friday, May, 16
• Minute-to-Win-it Ambush
