Hilda Walker Intermediate School – October, 2010
Letter From the Principal
General Information
Dear Walker Parents/Guardians,
Hilda Walker Intermediate School
19900 S. 80th Avenue
Tinley Park, Illinois 60487
Phone: 815-464-2285
Walker students are now settled in the routine of a new school
year, focusing on improving academically and participating in a
variety of after-school activities. They have taken the first of
three NWEA assessments to help us monitor academic growth in
reading, math and language.
Our teachers will use this
information and also student performance on last year’s 2010
ISAT to plan lessons and activities to help our students keep
growing!
Last year our Walker fifth and sixth graders met the high
expectations set for them by their teachers and parents by
performing so well on the 2010 ISAT. Overall 90% of our
students met or exceeded Adequate Yearly Progress. This is
phenomenal! Congratulations to all Walker staff members,
Walker parents and Walker students for working together to help
our students grow and perform so well!
Progress Reports (grades): Since grades were posted on
Power School through at least September 24th, you are able to
take a look at your child’s academic progress and performance in
all classes for the first half of this grading period. The grading
period ends on October 20th. Conference Days are scheduled for
November 1st and 2nd. Please call your child’s teacher to set up a
conference in November if you have not already done so. If you
have immediate concerns, we invite you to call your child’s
teacher right now to discuss options and suggestions for a
more successful second half of this grading period.
Sincerely,
Ms. Jan Zevkovich, Principal

PBIS
Hilda Walker is participating in an important district initiative
called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
What is PBIS?
PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It
is a school-wide strategy for helping all students achieve
important social and learning goals. We know that when good
behavior and good teaching come together, our students will excel
in their learning.
What does PBIS look like at our school so far?
We have adopted a unified set of expectations for behavior in our
district. They include the following: Be Respectful, Be
Responsible and Be Safe. You will notice that our behavioral
expectations are positively stated and easy to remember. In other
words, rather than telling students what not to do, our district is
focusing on these preferred behaviors. You will see these
expectations posted throughout the building.
We appreciate your input and involvement. Please contact us at
school if you have any questions or need further information.
Thank you for your support!

ELL NEWS
Hi! I wanted to introduce myself to you. My name is Ms. Soch and
I’m the new ELL teacher at Summit Hill Junior High and at Hilda
Walker Schools. I teach 5th to 8th grade ELL students. ELL means
English Language Learner.
My job is help support students who speak a second language so
that there isn’t a language barrier preventing academic success.
Please help your child by encouraging him/her to speak and read
in your first language as much as possible. This will build a firm
foundation in that language. The transition to English will then
become easier. I will be communicating with classroom teachers
in order to determine areas in which each student needs support.
This often includes pre-teaching and review of material. I look
forward to working with your child this school year.
Thank you for your support!
Miss Agnes Soch, ELL Teacher

Orff News
The Walker Wildcat Orff Ensemble has begun practice for our
Winter Program on December 2nd. The students have been
learning some playing techniques and warm-up routines for the
xylophones, metalophones, and glockenspiels. We have also
begun working on playing rhythmic ostinatos on various other
percussion, and Orff based instruments. Our first concert is sure
to be spectacular! Hope to see you there!
Walker “Wildcat” Dance Team
The Walker Wildcat Dance Team has had only a couple practices
so far, but it is already clear that we are going to have a fun year
together! Our first performance will be along side the Walker
Wildcat Singers and Orff Ensemble in the holiday program on
December 2nd! The dance team will be using elements from all
different genres of dance in their routine. We can’t wait to show
everyone what outstanding talent we have at Hilda Walker!

October Art News
Tinley Park Bench
Ms. McCarthy is always astounded by the level of talent and
creativity that the Hilda Walker students demonstrate in the art
room. This year the students will work with a variety of media
including pencil, oil pastel, watercolor, chalk pastel, printmaking,
and sculpture.
Last year in early February, the 6th Grade Walker Artists answered
Tinley Parks "Call to Artists" by designing a Bench for the 2010
Benches on the Avenue. The students created designs for an
"Astronaut" bench. The "astronaut" bench is about the mysteries
of the unknown. The front shows an alien that is stealing an
astronaut’s ship. The back is an astronaut floating in space that
literally bumps into an alien. The flower boxes display our
admiration of the NASA astronauts who have risked their lives to
educate us about the universe. The students received the bench
March 1st and worked hard filling the screw holes, priming and
painting the bench. They worked for two months during their
lunch time and before school. The bench is now located on Oak
Park Avenue along with 19 other spectacular looking benches. On
Saturday, August 14th, Tinley Park awarded the 6th Grade Walker
Artists an award for Best School Group Project. The bench will be
returned to Walker soon and will be placed in the lobby or
commons for all to enjoy!
Walker Artists
The 5th Grade Walker Artists are currently working on artwork for
display at Walker and the District office depicting the Walker
Way. The students have chosen an area in the school and one of
the 3 B's: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe, to
illustrate the way students should act in school. The best one will
be displayed at the District Office this year.
The 6th Grade Walker Artists are currently working on an
international contest, the Lions International Peace Poster
Contest. The students are creating a 16"x20" poster that shows
what peace means to them. The winner of the Walker round of
judging will be moving on the Lions Club District Governor for
further judging.
The 5th and 6th Grade Walker Artists will be participating in the 3rd
Annual Will County Art Fair. The theme this year is “Hero’s”, a
collaborative effort based on the student's Heroes. The artwork
will be displayed Wednesday, November 3rd, and Thursday,
November 4th, at the University of St. Francis. More information
will be sent home with the students participating in the show.
Art to Remember
Our school is offering a program that reproduces your child's
personal artwork onto a variety of colorful products. This
includes: magnets, key chains, quilt blocks, beverage insulators,
matted prints, wall calendars, bookmarks, ceramic mugs, sports
towels, mouse pads, heart ceramic ornaments, journals, art
sketchbooks, placemats, CD cases, stainless steel travel mugs,
pillows, teddy bears with T-shirts, tote bags, ceramic tiles, aprons,
and T-shirts.
Your child will create artwork following the art class curriculum.
Order forms will go out in October, for first quarter.
You will have the opportunity to purchase a variety of products
featuring your child's artwork. You are under no obligation to
purchase. However, we believe you will be excited by these
unique personal keepsakes. They make great gifts for family and
friends. We are excited to share this unique art program to
promote your child's art!
Miss Alison McCarthy, Art Teacher
Physical Education News
Please support the Hilda Walker Physical Education program by
bringing in Box Tops for Education. The money raised through
Box Tops is used to enhance the Physical Education program at
Hilda Walker. This year we were able to purchase dyna-bands,
mats, soccer balls, pickle ball equipment, and a variety of other
items to promote physical fitness. Over the past five years the PE
Department has been able to raise over 6 thousand dollars because
of the cooperation of parents and students. Thank You for your
continued support. Trimmed Box Tops can be turned into the PE
office at anytime.
To start the year, students' physical fitness levels were assessed
using Fitnessgram. Students completed the push ups, curl ups,
trunk lift, PACER, and sit and reach test. These tests were done to
measure their muscular strength and endurance, cardio respiratory
endurance, and flexibility. Results of the tests will be sent home
with the first quarter report card.
In the coming weeks students will be participating in soccer,
football, bowling, and fitness activities. These activities are
designed to teach students the skills of the game and the
importance of teamwork.
Parents, please remind your students to complete their PE question
of the week. It is due every Tuesday in their homeroom's PE
Box and is worth 15% of the total grade. PE homework is posted
in each homeroom and is available on Mr. Acevedo's webpage on
the Hilda Walker Website.

VIDEO CLUB
The Walker Video Club’s first meeting was after school on
Sept.15th with 32 students and 5 sixth grade helpers from last year:
Maddie Brzeczek, Jeremy Keeton, Brendon McKee, David Nino
and Zach Tassie. In our first two meetings, students have learned
how to make a photo name card and do transitions and special
effects on their practice movie. This week they will learn how to
use a video camera and make titles for their movie. Our last
meeting will be October 27th, but students can still participate by
volunteering to film and edit various school events, such as the
Veteran’s Day assembly in November, the Walker School play,
Talent show, plus other activities. The students will also help
develop an all-new Step-Up movie about Walker School to show
the fourth graders in the spring.

Garden Club News
Garden Club members, under the direction of Mrs. Pfeiffer, with
assistance from a parent volunteer, Karen Stevens, are helping to
take care of the native plantings on the school property. Recently,
Garden Club members have worked in the front of the building
removing weeds and clearing old debris from planting areas.
Further, members are assisting in maintaining plantings in the
Mary Drew Garden just outside the bus doors.
Between Mrs. Pfeiffer’s Science classes and the Garden Club as
well, the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly has been reestablished on the school grounds. If you look closely at the
milkweed plants on our property you will see many Monarch
caterpillars chewing and nourishing themselves on the plants we
have provided for them. These caterpillars will make chrysalises
and emerge as the front line of butterflies that make a yearly
migration to Mexico. These butterflies migrate to Mexico and then
send their off-spring back north in the Spring to begin the process
all over again.
While we continue making sure Monarch butterflies are hatched
from the school property, Garden Club members continue their
effort to regain and sustain Monarch and Karner Blue butterflies
in our school habitat. In fact, milkweed and wild lupine are now
planted on the school grounds in an attempt to encourage the
species of both the Monarch and the Karner Blue butterfly to
return and remain as an enduring part of our ecosystem.
This past summer, members of the Prestwick Garden Club worked
diligently in improving the garden area at the Mary Drew Garden
site. In fact, the Prestwick Garden Club was recently recognized
by the School Board for their efforts with a “Certificate of
Appreciation,” and pictures of them tending to the garden were
published in many newspapers in the Frankfort area.
Garden Club members will continue to maintain the gardens on
the school property, will take part in a recycling endeavor this
year, and will sponsor a “MUM FLOWER SALE” in the
upcoming weeks.
Also – we now have a bluebird house! Ask Garden Club members
what this exciting addition to our property is all about.
Want to join the Garden Club? See Mrs. Pfeiffer for
details.

REMINDER FROM TINLEY PARK POLICE DEPT.
Tinley Park Police Chief, Michael J. O’Connell, has requested that
all schools who serve Tinley Park students alert students, parents,
and caregivers to the laws that effect driving while in school zones
and construction zones:
Effective January 1, 2010:
 A person under the age of 19, who holds an instruction permit,
or a graduated Driver’s License, may not drive a vehicle on a
roadway while using a wireless phone. This does not apply to
persons under the age of 19 years, using a wireless telephone for
emergency purposes.
 A person, regardless of age, may not use a wireless telephone at
any time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in a School
Speed Zone, or on a highway in a Construction Zone or
Maintenance Speed Zone.
 A person may not operate a motor vehicle on a roadway while
using an electronic communication device to compose, send, or
read an electronic message or “text message”.
The Tinley Park Police Department will be enforcing these new
laws in the near future. The safety and well-being of all our
students is of primary importance. If you have any questions or
concerns, please contact the Police Department.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Tinley Park Police, Community Resource Unit

Reminders…..
Buses:
In order to provide safe transportation for all of our students,
children must ride the same bus to and from school each day. They
will not be able to switch buses without written permission from
the school office. Permission will only be granted for emergencies,
which do not include babysitting arrangements or going to a
friend’s house. Students also need to use their designated bus stop
for boarding and drop off each day.
Car riders:
Please remember that the building is not open for students until
8:00 am each day. Please do not drop off your child before this
time. Our primary concern is the safety of your child.
All student pick-ups are in the front of the building at the main
entrance only.
All drivers picking up students must enter the parking lot using the
east entrance that is nearest the baseball field. Please follow the
driveway along the outside of the parking lot. Vehicles are to form
a single file line stopping at the sidewalk in front of the main
entrance to the school. Your student(s) may not cross the parking
lot to get into a vehicle. All vehicles must exit the parking lot
using the west exit. Vehicles are not to drive across the parking lot
to use the east exit for departure (as it is designated a one-way
entrance during school hours). If a driver needs to enter the
p7
building to pick up their student(s), please park in the middle of the
lot and walk towards the main entrance. During pick-up times,
students are not permitted to cross the parking lot without an adult.
Drivers picking up students (or absent work from the office) are
asked not to park in the spaces adjacent to the sidewalks. Parking
in these spaces poses a danger for a collision during this time. If
your student is not outside when your vehicle is the lead one, the
driver will need to pull around and go back through the pick-up line
of cars.
Visitors:
For the safety of our students and staff, all visitors must sign in at
the main office. This includes before, during, and after school
hours. Please have a picture ID available when you check in. We
understand that you will periodically need to talk with your child’s
teacher. You are always welcome to do, but we do ask that you
arrange for a date and time in advance with your child’s teacher.
This will ensure that they are available to talk with you when you
arrive.
Cell Phone Use:
The use of cell phones at school is detrimental to the academic
climate because it takes valuable time away from instruction and
creates disciplinary problems. Students’ cell phones should be
turned off and NOT JUST SILENCED while inside the building
before, during, and after the school day. Cell phones must be
stored in backpacks and not in student possession during the
school day. Students who violate this policy will have the cell
phone confiscated and will receive disciplinary consequences.
Dress Code reminder….
With cooler weather upon us, please remind your child(ren) of the
appearance code as stated in the handbook.
Students’ dress for school must be appropriate.





Pants with excessive shredding or holes are not
appropriate.
Skirts and shorts must be to the fingertips regardless of
additional leg wear underneath.
Necklines must be 3” from the collarbone area.
Pajama pants (blanket fleece and flannel pants
included) may only be worn on designated spirit days.
Outerwear, such as coats, jackets, gloves, sunglasses, hats
and other head coverings may not be worn during the
school day unless the student is directly entering or
leaving the building. Fingerless gloves are not permitted
while in the school building.
You may consider sending your child with a sweatshirt or sweater
to keep at school in case they get cold during school day.
