Mrs. Baldessari Chemistry
50 point project
Due: _______________ Name__________________________________________
Purpose of the Project:
A study of the development of modern atomic theory illustrates how theories can change as new discoveries are
made. For this reason, we normally study atomic theory in its historical context. You will discover through your
research: Who thought of the atom first, how the model of the atom has changed through time, how the model
looks today, and which people are responsible for the greatest changes in the atomic model.
BUILDING YOUR TIMELINE:
For each of the scientists listed below, you will be providing the following information:
 Background information on the scientists including: name, photo, where they were born, when did they died
10 points
 Brief description of the experiment each scientist conducted (approximately 100 words or less) including
the year they conducted the experiment 10 points
 The significance of their experiment – observations made and what they discovered/what the scientist is
known for(such as discovering protons) 10 points
 The name of the new model, and a photo of the new model or a photo of the experiment. (Note, in some
cases a new model was not developed, just a further understanding of the current model.) 10 points
 Neat, colorful, easy to read timeline 10 points
James Chadwick
John Dalton
Democritus
Eugene Goldstein
Robert A. Millikan
Earnest Rutherford
Joseph John Thomson
Erwin Schrödinger
YOUR TASK:
 Research each of the scientists. (Use you text book, my website, and the Internet.)
 You will be creating a timeline, on construction paper or poster board to communicate your findings
A) Draw a colored timeline on a construction paper or poster board with dates clearly labeled
B) Neatly, glue all the information on your timeline
C) Add color or other decorations to make your timeline visually interesting.
D) Refer to the rubric to ensure that you add all of the information required
E) You may choose to add other appropriate information and/or pictures you find during
your research.
F) Turn in project on time with rubric attached.
