Get ready for the
most massive concert to
be held in Cold Lake in
15 years.
Military band meets
brass band in “The Roast
Beef of Old England,”
a concert spectacular
hosted by the 4 Wing
Band this Saturday.
“It’s going to be
huge – two completely
different bands, tons
of brass and a program
that includes everything
from Elton John to
Rossini,”
said
WO
Cam Martin, 4 Wing
Bandmaster.
The 4 Wing Band’s
special guests for the
concert are the Mill
Creek Colliery Band,
an authentic Britishstyle brass band from
Edmonton. Unlike a
typical military band, a
brass band is all brass and
percussion – no flutes,
clarinets or saxophones.
Its
perfectly-blended
sound can rattle the
palace walls or warm the
cockles of a Cockney’s
heart.
WO Martin will be
doing double or even
triple duty that night.
In addition to directing
the 4 Wing Band, he’ll
be playing the soprano
cornet in the Mill Creek
band and performing a
solo on that instrument.
“It’s a tiny little
instrument, almost like
a toy trumpet,” he said.
“But it’s incredibly agile,
and can play high notes
way up into the musical
stratosphere. You don’t
see them in brass-and-
reed bands, but they’re a
staple in a British brass
band.”
Each band will have
a turn on the stage, and
then they will combine
for a hair-raising finale.
The evening will
have a definite British
flavour,
but
Irish,
Italian and American
music also figures in the
program. Interspersed
among
the
“proper”
selections will be popular
music and folk tunes, and
WO Martin will get to
play the famous piccolotrumpet part from the
Beatles’ “Penny Lane” on
his little cornet.
The concert starts at
7:30 pm at the Lakeland
Inn, with an optional
dinner at 6:00. Please see

details.

Remembering
“Chief Pete”
WCWO Bob Viel and
the Medley CFB Society
have begun looking for
this year’s recipients of
the CWO Peter Stauffer
Memorial Scholarships.
We’ll have full info in next
week’s issue.
In
a
nutshell,
the
Society
offers
scholarships of $2,500 to
graduating high school
students who want to
pursue post-secondary
studies. The scholarships
reward
motivation
and effort over pure
achievement
–
an
applicant doesn’t have to
be a straight-A student,
but must demonstrate
academic
consistency
and commitment to the
community.
I had the honour of
working for CWO Stauffer,
and I am thrilled to see
that the Medley CFB
Society has taken such
good care of his legacy.
Pete was a trucker, and
his leadership always
reflected his respect
for the hard-working
men and women in “the
trades.” As WCWO, he
encouraged people to
give their best, and he
always showed genuine
appreciation for personal
effort.
Pete
loved
the
military life, and he knew
how to balance work and
play. He was 4 Wing’s most
famous
“parrothead”
(Jimmy Buffett fan), and
he took almost as much
pride in his ridiculously
colourful shirts as he did
in his uniform. I don’t
think there will ever be
an annual social event on
the base that will match
Pete and Rae’s legendary
Christmas parties.
If you know someone
who is graduating from
high school this year,
please check out next
week’s paper or send
a note to Robert.Viel@
forces.gc.ca. The Peter
Stauffer
scholarships
offer
terrific
encouragement to young
students, and do justice
to the memory of an
inspiring leader.

CDS Announces Action Plan on Sexual Misconduct
DND/The Courier
Last
week
the
Chief of Defence Staff
(CDS), Gen Tom Lawson,
publicly released the
independent
external
review authority’s report
into sexual misconduct
and sexual harassment.
He also released an
action plan to address
inappropriate
sexual
behaviour
in
the
Canadian Armed Forces
(CAF).
In
April
2014,
the CDS ordered an
independent
external
review to look into
sexual misconduct and
sexual harassment cases
involving CAF members.
This followed a number
of media reports on the
subject and a subsequent
internal review.
Madame
Marie
Deschamps, a former
Supreme Court of Canada
Justice, completed the
external review in March.
In her report, Mme
Deschamps cited “an
underlying
sexualized
culture in the CAF that
is hostile to women and
LGBTQ members, and
conducive to more serious
incidents
of
sexual
harassment and assault.”
She said there is a serious
problem
of
underreporting
harassment
and assault incidents,
partly because of a lack
of trust that the chain of
command will deal with
them appropriately.
She said the three
fundamental
points
are support for victims,
rebuilding trust and
confidence
in
the
organization,
and
“momentum.”
“There are, in the
Canadian
Forces,
a
number of persons who
are open to, and indeed
welcome,
a
change
in the organizational
culture and are ready
to participate in that
change to prevent further
incidents
of
sexual
harassment and assault,”
she said.
The
report
includes ten specific
recommendations. The
CDS has accepted two of
them, and has accepted
the remaining eight in
principle while the CAF
studies how they can be
implemented.
The CDS has directed
the creation of the
Canadian Armed Forces
Strategic Response Team
on Sexual Misconduct.
The initial mandate of
the Strategic Response
Team was to conduct a
detailed review of the
final report and develop
an action plan to address
its recommendations.
The
team
is
headed
by
MGen
Chris
Whitecross.
“Inappropriate
sexual
behaviour is a complex
problem,”
she
said.
“Quick band-aid fixes
are unlikely to solve the
many dimensions of the
problem. We need wellconsidered
innovative
change to arrive at a longterm and sustainable
solution.”
“The CAF action
plan is a key step of the
solution.”
Gen Lawson agrees
this is the beginning of
a long process, but he
says it’s a necessary one.
“For an institution such
as the Canadian Armed
Forces, one built on the
camaraderie and trust,
inappropriate
sexual
behaviour
is
utterly
corrosive,” he said.
“Exemplary conduct
is part of Canadian
Armed Forces members’
obligation to serve. We
cannot accept anything
less, and I will not accept
anything less.”
Highlights of the action plan include:
o Engaging leadership at all levels to
support and engage in the changes required;
o Examining what structure is required
to centralize the responsibility for prevention,
training, victim support, research and reporting
of inappropriate sexual behaviour;
o Assessing existing inappropriate sexual
behaviour reporting processes with the aim of
encouraging increased reporting by making the
process easier to navigate for victims;
o A comprehensive review of all language
and definitions associated with inappropriate
sexual behaviour;
o Conducting a comprehensive review
of all relevant policies associated with
inappropriate sexual behaviour, with the
objective of integrating them more coherently;
o Developing options to better inform
victims of the complaint processes that are
currently in place;
o Examining the delivery of support to
members who come forward with allegations;
and
o Updating the education and training
curriculum both in terms of content and
delivery.

Theme: Play. Watch for upcoming schedule. Summertime

no rules, no structure. You can
make up each day, and every
day is different. Whether you’re
on your own or with your friends,

kids to see reading as play,
and discover that the joyful,
boundless and carefree feelings
associated with play can just as
easily be found in a great book.
We want kids to have fun reading
and share this joy, while they
have the freedom to choose,
explore, discover and play, any
way they want.

Squadron (WTIS) and 42

competed in the force

challenge consists of the
four components of the
force fitness test done
back to back with a 30

The order of the
events was the sand-bag
lift, intermittent loaded

on the time from start of
sandbag lift to the end of
the rushes.
While the Force

meant to be a challenge
for individuals, WTIS
and 42 Radar stepped
up to take it on as units.
Winners would receive

points for their unit and
earn bragging rights for
the year.
As it turned out,
42 Radar was underrepresented on the day,

the two units participated

PETS
QWhich plants are toxic to my pet?
A
Azaleas, chrysanthemums and split leaf philodendrons
are what your neighbours flatter you with, Green Thumb
comments. But your houseplants might make your pets “green”
too. An unexpected pet illness often leads back to a nibbled
leaf on a houseplant. Birds, cats and dogs chew them, which
can cause a rash, swollen tongue/lips, or vomiting, stomach
pain and cramps. The ingestion of some plants can even cause
serious heart, kidney and respiratory problems. The list of toxic
house and outdoor plants is extensive, including some of the
most commonly kept: asparagus ferns, daffodils, heart and
saddle leaf philodendrons and lily-of-the-valley. If your pet is
showing an interest in your foliage, ask your veterinarian for a
list of poisonous plants.

Q
HOME INSPECTION
I heard that Radon gas is now a potential hazard in
parts of Alberta. Do we need to check if our home
has this?
A
Radon gas can be found in many parts of the province. In 2007
Health Canada lowered exposure limits considerably - see this
link for more info (http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ewh-semt/radiation/
radon/faq_fq-eng.php). In turn this has made the public more
aware of the hazards associated with Radon decay products. Given
the reduced exposure levels, there could be homes in the area that
have elevated amounts of Radon. Testing is not readily available
and it’s best to seek a professional like ourselves with the
knowledge and specialized equipment for measuring Radon levels.
Mitigating the Radon can be done in several ways and always seek
a certified company to conduct mitigation in accordance with local
codes. Call us to discuss measuring/ testing your home for Radon.

SUMMER IS COMING! WHAT CAN I DO FOR
MY CELLULITE?
Sometimes, there are fat deposits which cannot be
eliminated by diet or exercise. Fortunately, there are
ways to help eliminate those difficult problem areas. Lipolysis
(Lipo-dissolve) injections target those concerned areas. They
initiate a process during which fat cells are broken down
and then are excreted by the body. Another alternative is
SlimShapes body contouring. It combines radio-frequency
and ultra-sound to melt and break up the fat. The radiofrequency tightens the skin therefore improving your internal
Spanks. Resulting in a beautiful slimming effect!
For the month of May we have a special for Body
Contouring. Get 1 Lipodissolve and 3 SlimShapes for only
$1500. Book your appointment today to look and feel great
for summer!

Three Square Meals a Day de l’escadre, c’est un peu

4 Wing Food
Services
Times are busy at
Wing Foods.
The All Ranks
Kitchen (ARK) not only
prepares
breakfast,
lunch and supper for
our diners, we also
prepare and organize
meals for people that
aren't able to come to our
facility. Every day, we put
together
lunch
and
supper for Q, WASF,
Bldg 162, and Control
Tower duty personnel.
This includes a hot
meal and between-meal
allowances (BMAs). We
also prepare box lunches
and BMAs for members
who are required to work
over meal hours, like
those at 42 Radar and
TEME.
The box lunches
served on flights to
Inuvik are prepared in
our kitchen to hold you
over until you get to
your destination. There
you will meet one of our
members from the 4 Wing
ARK waiting to serve you
breakfast, lunch and
supper for the duration
of your stay.
For special exercises
and
winter
survival
training, we select a cook
to prepare hot meals for
the staff. When 1 Service
Battalion or other units
from Edmonton come
to Cold Lake to conduct
training, we supply food
for their hay boxes, and
also supply BMAs and
hot coffee. When 4 Wing
Units have a mess dinner,
our staff coordinate with
the customer to create
the menus and prepare
the food (and they always
enjoy that shot at the end
of the dinner!).
The
Logistics
Branch recently started
a competition for the best
cake design. Every cook
in the kitchen puts an
effort into designing and
baking a cake that best
represents the Logistics
Branch.
Being a cook in
the Canadian Armed
Forces is not just serving
three meals a day, but
also looking after those
little things that people
appreciate but may not
realize are a part of our
daily routine.

Celebrating All Types of Mothers
Padre Elisabeth
Duggan
Sunday
we
will
celebrate
mothers,
but motherhood is so
much more than just
maternity.
Over
the
years, Mother’s Day has
come to mean various
things
to
various
people. In some cases it
celebrates the motherly
love women (or even men)
give to those they did not
bear.
Motherhood
is
a heart that endlessly
gives of her love. Children
grow
and
develop
from the love given to
them. When a mother
makes sacrifices, a child
learns the value and
importance they have in
the world. The sleepless
nights caring for a
sick child or quieting
nightmares are examples
of a mother’s sacrificial
love.
Motherhood is hands
that never stop working.
Life
brings
many
demands – sporting
events, activities and
bake sales are a job in
themselves. Mothers do
not question but give
of themselves to offer a
child
endless
opportunities.

HOROSCOPES
Capricorn - December 22 - January 19
An old friend reaches out. Call them, Capricorn. They
need your support. A treasure is uncovered. Put it to
good use. A goal is set high.
Aquarius - January 20 - February 18
Stand back, Aquarius. An old acquaintance is about to
make a scene. There is a means behind the madness,
but that may not be reason enough for you to join in.
Pisces - February 19 - March 20
Change is inevitable, Pisces. Roll with it. Good will
come of it. A message remains unreturned. Try not to
let it bother you. You can’t win them all.
Aries - March 21 - April 19
Praise is hard to come by these days, Aries. Keep at it,
and you will be rewarded eventually. A family member
beats the odds. Celebrate with a day at the park.
Taurus - April 20 - May 20
Battle wages at home. Steer clear of it, Taurus.
Winning is impossible. The to-do list grows at the
office. Divide and conquer. A request is denied.
Gemini - May 21 - June 21
You can hope for something all you want, Gemini, but
it may not be in the cards right now. There is another
more realistic goal. A debt is repaid with interest.
Cancer - June 22 - July 22
Relax, Cancer. You’ve done the work, and it shows.
You will impress far more than you realize. The details
of a long-term plan are finally revealed.
Leo - July 23 - August 22
Uh-uh-uh, Leo. You’ve had your turn. It’s time for
someone else to shine. A fundraiser begins. Money is
nice, but time is even better. A conversation turns ugly.
Virgo - August 23 - September 22
For crying out loud, Virgo. How many times are you
going to come to a friend’s aid before you realize
the truth? You’re being duped. Turn your efforts
elsewhere.
Libra - September 23 - October 22
Athletic pursuits supersede academics this week,
Libra. Give the youngster in your life your blessing.
Achievements at work call for a party.
Scorpio - October 23 - November 21
The desire to succeed is strong this week, Scorpio,
perhaps a little too strong. Don’t get carried away. An
offer is accepted and finalized.
Sagittarius - November 22 - December 21
Frustration grows in the planning of an event.
Compromise is key, and it is up to you to get the
conversation started, Sagittarius. A text inspires.

Counting Crows and Twin Forks
Give Cold Lake a Special Night
Capt Kyle Wall
Counting
Crows
came to Cold Lake
Energy Centre on Friday
to promote their seventh
studio album, Somewhere

The band took the
stage as consummate
professionals. With two
decades of experience,
they played a seamless
