John Jay College Campaign for the Future of Justice
Jules and Lynn Kroll Lead by Example
Jules Kroll, chairman of the John Jay College
Foundation Board of Trustees, has a long and
well established track record as a pioneer
in such fields as private investigations, risk
management and bond rating. Now he has
shown himself to be every bit the trailblazer
with respect to John Jay’s fundraising
campaign, with a $2-million leadership gift
that will help support the College’s Honors
Program for talented,
highly motivated students.
The College saluted the
gift from Kroll and his
wife, Lynn, by naming
the soaring, light-filled
atrium that anchors the
new building on West 59th
Street in their honor. The
dedication on May 8 was
part of a gala to formally
launch the $50-million
Campaign for the Future of Justice.
“Jules Kroll’s long and distinguished career
has been built on trailblazing leadership, and
he proves this once again with this generous
gift to our campaign and our students,” said
President Jeremy Travis.
Kroll, who is chairman and chief executive of
Kroll Bond Rating Agency Inc. and chairman
and co-founder of K2 Intelligence, said in
an interview with The Wall Street Journal
that the gift was spurred in part by his
interest in helping the minority population
at John Jay, where nearly two-thirds of the
15,000 students are either Latino or African
American. “I didn’t feel that I had ever done
enough for the minority community in my
other work,” said Kroll. “It makes you feel
good to help with that.”
Kroll said he hopes that the gift will “lead by
example” and prompt others to do likewise.
“The inspiration for this
is seeing the contribution
that our graduates
and faculty make,” he
said. “They really are
on the front lines of
educating and becoming
practitioners in the area
of justice.”
The John Jay Honors
Program is an innovative,
theme-based program
that brings students together to excel
academically. They work closely with faculty
and peers in an ongoing learning community,
exploring the idea of the common good
in a sequence of enriched, challenging,
interdisciplinary courses that use New
York City as a laboratory for learning. The
program emphasizes critical thinking,
creativity and ethical decision-making with
attention to global concerns, community
responsibility and civic engagement.
from the president
The proud history and promising future
of John Jay College of Criminal Justice owe
much to our donors and benefactors, whose
generosity and vision have combined in
powerful ways to contribute to the College’s
ongoing success story.
It is here at John Jay that students
are challenged, stimulated and
engaged as they prepare to make
a difference in the world. It is
here that faculty members bring
to bear the very best in teaching
and scholarship in the course of
addressing society’s most pressing
needs. And it is here that every gift
makes a significant difference not
only to our students but to those
whose lives will be ultimately
touched by our future “fierce advocates for
justice.” You have our profound gratitude.
Consider a few examples: the $5-million
gift from proud alumnus Dr. Andrew
Shiva (MS ’97) and his wife, Anya, that will
support students and faculty in our forensic
psychology programs; the $200,000 in crucial
planning and operational funding provided
by the David Rockefeller Fund for the
Prison-to-College Pipeline program; and the
$2 million from John Jay College Foundation
Chairman Jules Kroll and his wife, Lynn, to
support the Honors Program for our brightest,
most highly motivated students.
These are just three of the many contributions
that provide us with valuable unrestricted
funds for investment in the kinds of programs
students expect from their college. These gifts
also allow us to attract and retain
extraordinary young faculty
members who, while winning
coveted prizes for their research,
know the importance of teaching
future leaders, scholars and heroes.
As John Jay looks ahead to 2014,
when we will mark 50 years of
Educating for Justice, nothing is
more crucial to the future success
of the College and its students than
our donors’ continued generous support of the
ongoing $50-million Campaign for the Future
of Justice. I am proud of and grateful for the
commitment of all of our donors, who are
helping to insure that John Jay’s noble mission
continues unimpeded, and that we maintain
our preeminent position as an institution
of higher learning, innovative research and
cultural significance.

Jay Walk Contributions Pave the Way for Scholarships
Early last year, a standing-room-only crowd

John Jay’s two buildings,
the Jay Walk is a unique

The Anya and Andrew Shiva Art Gallery is Named in Honor of
the Largest Donation in the College’s History
In a historic milestone for John Jay, alumnus
and Adjunct Professor Dr. Andrew Shiva
donated an extraordinary $5-million gift to
the College, the largest donation in its nearly
50-year history. In recognition of this gift, the
new building’s 4,050-square-foot exhibition
gallery has been named the Anya and
Andrew Shiva Gallery.
Dr. and Mrs. Shiva’s transformative gift will
be used to fund research grants for students
and faculty of John Jay’s PhD program
in Forensic Psychology, assessment and
psychotherapy training for students, and
new research initiatives that would not
be possible without this unprecedented
contribution.
Dr. Shiva said his inspiration for giving so
generously to his alma mater began with
the rich, powerful relationships with and
encouragement he received from John Jay
faculty as a student. Those relationships
would continue and grow as Dr. Shiva
went on to become chief psychologist of the
Division of Forensic Psychiatry at NYU/
Bellevue Hospital Center, and an active and
visionary member of John Jay’s graduate
faculty in forensic psychology.
In a reception dedicating the Anya and
Andrew Shiva Gallery, President Jeremy
Travis conveyed his deep gratitude to the
Shivas for their tremendous generosity and
dedication to John Jay.
“We stand here today in recognition of the
arts and what Andrew has given to the
psychology department and the eminence of
that program. We are also recognizing an act
of generosity in naming this art gallery,” said
President Travis.
“I’ve been asked more than once, ‘Why an
art gallery?’ Community is my first answer,”
said Dr. Shiva. “An art gallery provides our
students with exposure to art, creativity,
expression, imagination and inspiration.
The second answer has to do with the
psychological aspect of art as an expression
of the inner self. When you combine a
psychological approach to interpreting art
with topics related to crime and justice, there
is a real opportunity to see, through the work
in front of you, a glimpse of the artist’s soul.”
Dr. Shiva is also an avid collector of antique
United States paper currency, and he founded
the National Currency Foundation in the fall
of 2011 to promote the history behind paper
money and virtual exposure to the notes
themselves. As a Research Associate for the
Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum
of American History, Dr. Shiva has begun
digitizing and cataloging the paper currency
in the National Numismatic Collection at
the Smithsonian for their archives and as a
teaching tool for the general public.
After earning a BA/MA in Forensic
Psychology in 1997, Dr. Shiva went on to
earn a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from
Columbia University. Always passionate
about higher education and the mental health
field, Dr. Shiva has been a strong supporter
of the College as a member of the doctoral
faculty and as a trustee of the John Jay
College Foundation.

Pinkerton Fellowship Initiative Making a Difference
The Pinkerton Foundation has demonstrated
strong confidence in John Jay and its students
by making its largest grant ever to a college
and its first grant to support a fellowship
program to John Jay. Named the “Pinkerton
Fellowship Initiative,” the $475,068 project
will provide opportunities for promising
students to assume positions of responsibility
in the youth-service field.
The initiative consists of two tracks, the
Pinkerton Community Fellows and the
Pinkerton Graduate Research Fellows,
providing unique learning and service
opportunities for up to 10 juniors and seniors
and four graduate students. Pinkerton
Fellows engage in year-long placements
with a host organization from the nonprofit
sector, and receive financial support in the
form of wages, stipends and transportation
allowances. Graduate Research Fellows
work with outside agencies under the
auspices of the John Jay Research and
Evaluation Center.
The 2012-2013 host organizations include:
Abraham House; the Center for Court
Innovation; the Center for Alternative
Sentencing and Employment Services; the
Children’s Aid Society; the DOME Project;
Exalt Youth; Good Shepherd Services; Hour
Children, and the Osborne Association.
“Pinkerton Fellowships provide students with
the opportunity to connect their academic
learning with professional experience,” said
Ann Jacobs, Director of the Prisoner Reentry
Institute, which oversees the Pinkerton
Community Fellows component. “As a result,
they are more employable, more promotable,
and more likely to contribute in big ways
earlier in their lives.”
Rick Smith, the President of the Pinkerton
Foundation, added: “We are delighted that the
Pinkerton Fellows Initiative at John Jay will
both provide direct, hands-on assistance to
many of our community-based grantees and
offer a new generation of students and young
researchers valuable experience in the field.”

justice reporting gets boost from tow foundation
The Tow Foundation takes a programmatic
interest in media, juvenile justice, higher
education and First Amendment issues –
evidence of which was amply displayed in the
foundation’s $100,000 grant to support the

projects either planned or in the works.
With Tow’s support, the center is also creating
an online “juvenile justice news network” for
participating journalists, with discussions,
chats and other resources to assist them in
following trends and new research in this
area. “Fellows have to commit
to going out and producing
stories,” she said. “Anytime you
can get journalists to write about
an otherwise uncovered subject,
it’s a plus.”

Rockefeller Fund ‘Leap of Faith’ Helps Prisoner Reentry
John Jay’s Prison-to-College Pipeline
program, which is helping to redefine
prisoner reentry, owes its existence in part
to a “leap of faith” on the part of the David
Rockefeller Fund, which has provided two
two-year grants to
help get the initiative
up and running.
The P2CP program,
as it is known, brings
together students
from the John Jay
campus and men
incarcerated at the
upstate Otisville
Correctional Facility
for a monthly series of learning exchanges at
the prison. The inmates, who are all within
two to five years of release, also participate in
traditional college classes and are guaranteed
admission to the City University upon release
if they meet certain basic qualifying criteria.
“They’re discerning,” Ann Jacobs, executive
director of the Prisoner Reentry Institute,
said of the David Rockefeller Fund and its
executive director, Marnie Pillsbury, and
director of programs, Marianna Schaffer.
“They know that higher education is one of the
best investments you can make when it comes
to corrections.”
The Fund provided
$100,000 over
two years from
2010-2011, which
Jacobs said covered
the planning and
start-up phase
and the first year
of operation.
The funding was
renewed for an
additional two years in 2012.
“They saw the opportunity here,” said Jacobs.
“This is a very substantial commitment on the
part of the David Rockefeller Fund.”
Jacobs added that Fund officials stay very
involved with the P2CP, visiting Otisville
prison, attending Prisoner Reentry Institute
events and networking with other potential
donors.

Mirantes invest in social justice
A generous $250,000 gift from the Vice
Chairman of the John Jay College Foundation
Board of Trustees and his wife will help
support the John Jay Vera
Fellows Program, which
provides an opportunity
for students to gain critical
experience as interns at social
justice organizations.
In recognition of the gift, the
College has named the new
rooftop terrace the Elizabeth
and Arthur J. Mirante II
Faculty Dining Terrace.
Mirante, is a former CEO of Cushman &
Wakefield, the commercial real estate firm.
In 2012 he became a Principal and Tri-State
President of Avison Young, Canada’s largest
independently-owned real estate services
firm.
The Mirantes are staunch,
longtime financial
supporters of the John Jay
Vera Fellows Program,
now in its fifth year.
Support for the program
makes it possible for
outstanding students
who have demonstrated
a commitment to social
justice and public service
to receive stipends during their internships.
Arthur Mirante will be the honoree at the
College’s 2013 fundraising gala.
loyal donors help john jay vera fellows make an impact
From Harlem to Brooklyn, even at the state
Capitol, John Jay Vera Fellows are making
an impact. As interns in social justice
organizations, John Jay students are gaining
valuable experience and contributing to
the front-line work of community-based
organizations.
One recent John Jay Vera Fellow interned
with the Neighborhood Defender Service,
which provides free legal representation
and social services
to residents of upper
Harlem. During the
internship she shadowed
attorneys and had a front
seat into the world of
lawyering.
Through the John Jay
Vera Fellows Program,
10 students each year
have an opportunity
to intern with front-line criminal justice
agencies. The Fellows attend weekly
seminars that include scholarly reading and
discussion, guest lectures and site visits.
They also receive a stipend of $1,500 per
semester.
Many Fellows have gone on to full-time
employment at their internship sites or have
used their experience to help them obtain
related positions at other nonprofits. One
6
Fellow who was hired by her internship
agency has since been promoted twice and
now serves as an agency mentor to a John Jay
Vera Fellow.
The reactions of students to the John Jay Vera
Fellowship have been uniformly positive.
“Interning with a Vera agency has completely
changed my perspective on what my future
could be,” said one. “The Vera Fellowship is
a truly one-of-a-kind, hands-on experience
that helped me define
who I am and what
I would like to do in
life, and gave me the
confidence that I can
achieve that.”
The program, coordinated by Professor
Abby Stein of John Jay’s
Interdisciplinary Studies
Program, is made possible by the generous support of loyal donors,
including former New York City Corporation
Counsel Frederick A.O. Schwarz Jr.; former
Goldman Sachs Senior Director Richard
Menschel and his wife, Ronay; Jeffrey Gural,
chairman of Newmark Grubb Knight Frank;
Ron L. Moelis, CEO and chairman of L&M
Development Partners Inc., and Herbert
Sturz, former New York City Deputy Mayor
and the founding Director of the Vera Institute of Justice.
then, now and always,
students matter to Jim and rubie malone
Through all of the many positions Drs.
James and Rubie Malone have held in
their long careers at John Jay – as faculty
members, counselors, deans and College
executives – students have
always occupied a special
place in their hearts. The
Malones recently affirmed
that affection with a
$100,000 pledge to the
College to support student
scholarships. In recognition,
the College on December
11 dedicated the Drs. Rubie
and James Malone Student
Government Conference
Room in the new building.
The conference room is the site of Student
Council meetings as well as workshops,
training sessions and other events.
Jim, as he is known schoolwide, has been
member of the John Jay community since
1970, and his long service includes 11 years
as Dean of Students. In that role, he helped
create the student government charter that is
still in force today. Rubie, his wife of 49 years,
joined John Jay in 1978, and like her husband began in the Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) program. Her John Jay
career has similarly been marked by extensive
involvement in student activities, as faculty advisor, counselor and mentor.
Both are trained as teachers
and social workers, although
the recognition of their talents
ultimately lifted them to
other assignments, Jim as the
College’s first Vice President
for Administrative Affairs,
and Rubie as Assistant
Vice President for Strategic
Planning and Outcomes
Assessment.
The Malones’ pledge reflects guiding precepts
that have helped shape their lives. Jim professes
a strong belief in “reaching back” and helping
others to attain their highest potential. He
often says, “If I can help somebody as I pass
this way, then my living has not been in vain.”
Rubie, ever mindful of the guidance and
encouragement she has received from family,
teachers and others, said she continues to live
by the motto of her undergraduate alma mater:
“Culture for Service.”
Remembering A Visionary
George Friedman, a beloved member of the
John Jay College Foundation Board of
Trustees, died suddenly last year. “George
was an inspiring, devoted, energetic and
tireless advocate for the mission of John Jay
College,” remembers President
Jeremy Travis. “Through his creative
contributions, he shaped the future
of the College,” added John Jay Board
Chair Jules Kroll. “He always pushed
us to be creative and bold,” added
President Travis. “We miss him.”
Friedman was the genius behind
developing and marketing perfumes
for some of the best known designers
in the world, including Ralph Lauren,
Paloma Picasso and Gloria Vanderbilt. His
entrepreneurial vision changed the fragrance
landscape and his impact in the cosmetic
industry was legendary.
Friedman’s innovative spirit and deep
expertise in marketing and advertising were
a tremendous boon to John Jay. His input
was pivotal in moving John Jay forward with
a new branding initiative and logo, which
were created by fellow board member Alan
Siegel of Siegelvision.
Friedman served with distinction
on numerous boards in the not-forprofit sector and was chairman of
the I Have a Dream Foundation,
through which he sponsored a
program that enabled inner-city
children to attend college.
John Jay is privileged to continue
to work with George’s wife, Pam
Bernstein Friedman, who donated her
husband’s wardrobe to continue her support
of John Jay’s Career Services Clothing Closet
Program. In addition, a scholarship fund has
been established in Friedman’s name. Those
who wish to contribute should visit www.

Campaign Close-up
Jayne Rosengarten, Vice President of Marketing and Development
provides a closer look at The Campaign for the Future of Justice.
Inspired to Give: What is the vision for The
Campaign for the Future of Justice?
Vice President Rosengarten: The Campaign
for the Future of Justice provides alumni and
friends of John Jay a unique opportunity to
join the College’s efforts to forge new and
remarkable initiatives that further the impact
of the College’s world-class scholarship and
research.
Inspired to Give: When did the
Campaign begin and how much
has been raised?
Vice President Rosengarten:
The Campaign for the Future of
Justice began in 2005 with an
established goal of raising $50
million by the College’s 50th
anniversary, which will take place in the
2014/2015 academic year. The Campaign has
had an overwhelming response from alumni
and friends and to date has raised over $42
million.
Inspired to Give: What do the Campaign
contributions support?
Vice President Rosengarten: The funds
raised will support student success through
scholarships, enriched interdisciplinary
programs and paid internships.
Contributions also support innovative faculty
research and will help to recruit and retain
eminent scholars, scientists, artists and
professionals. The funds will also enhance
our students’ learning environment by
enabling the College to further expand its
facilities and resources. Donors work with
the President and John Jay’s development
team to determine their area of interest and
match it with the needs of the College.
Inspired to Give: How has the new building
impacted the College’s fundraising efforts?
Vice President Rosengarten: The College’s
new bold 13-story vertical campus is the
architectural embodiment of the College’s
transformation as a world leader in
Educating for Justice. Towering above 11th
8
Avenue, it provides a timely opportunity
to rally philanthropic support. Since John
Jay did not need to raise funds for the
construction of the building, donors have
the unique opportunity to name a space and
designate the funds to an area of need at the
College.
Inspired to Give: Why does John Jay need
philanthropic funds if the College
is funded by the State?
Vice President Rosengarten:
Dramatic changes have occurred
in government funding for
higher education. State support
for publicly funded institutions
has dwindled and growth in
federal support for financial
aid and research has also been
significantly reduced. It is critical that as
a publicly funded institution, we leverage
private donations to ensure that our students
continue to receive the quality education
that they deserve and that John Jay remains
competitive and on the cutting edge.
Inspired to Give: This publication features
many generous donors; do smaller gifts count
in the Campaign?
Vice President Rosengarten: Each and
every gift is meaningful. We are grateful to all
of our donors, whether it is a gift made today
or a future bequest. Every dollar counts
and supports student success, enriched
programs, faculty research and an enhanced
learning environment. Alumni participation
rates, in particular, are universally
regarded as the best way to measure alumni
satisfaction with their alma mater; it is one
of the key metrics used to determine national
rankings and the financial support received
from foundations. It is not the dollar amount
of each gift that counts; it is the percentage of
alumni that give at any level. A gift of $25 is
just as important as a gift of $2,500 when it
comes to alumni participation.
thank you from chair jules kroll
For nearly 50 years, John Jay College of Criminal Justice has been providing outstanding
educational opportunities to students from all walks of life and every part of the globe. Your
support and commitment allow these future “fierce advocates for justice” to continue to reap the
considerable benefits of a John Jay education. Thank you, alumni, friends and supporters.
These are exciting times at John Jay, as the College undergoes a dramatic transformation and
expansion, with new cutting-edge academic programs, highly motivated new faculty and
students and, of course, the spectacular new addition to the West Side campus. It is inspiring to
see the contributions that our graduates and our faculty make on the front lines of justice in all
its myriad forms, and the recently launched Campaign for the Future of Justice is an important
way of assuring that future generations will have an opportunity to make similar impacts.
It is my honor and privilege to serve as chairman of the foundation, and I salute each and every
one of you for your willingness to lead by example, Your steadfast and generous support serves
to inspire others to do likewise, and makes it possible for John Jay to maintain and build its
international reputation in Educating for Justice well into the 21st century.
