Introduction
Introduction
"Few things sponsor spiritual growth more than
studying from the scriptures. The Savior said, 'He
that hath the scriptures, let him search them, and
see . . . ' (3 Nephi 10: 14). The Lord has promised
that if you will search, you shall see marvelous
spiritual truths that will persuade you to turn to
Christ as your great exemplar. You will be
strengthened in your desire to make covenants with
the Lord, to receive the ordinances, and to serve"
(A. Theodore Tuttle, in Conference Report, Apr.
1984, p. 3 2 ; or Ensign, May 1 984, p. 24).
As teachers we need to do all we can to help our
students devote themselves to scripture study. Part of
our challenge is to pay the price ourselves to master
the scriptures. We also need to spend the time
necessary to help our students master the scriptures.
We should teach students to feast upon the words of
Christ, to search the scriptures, and to apply them
to situations and problems they face during their
lives.
A primary objective of scripture mastery is for each
student to learn the location of certain scripture
passages, and their historical setting, doctrinal
teaching, missionary application, and personal
application. Students should be encouraged to
memorize the scripture passages as well. By the time
they graduate from seminary, students should be
extremely familiar with the one hundred scripture
mastery passages and should have a strong desire to
continue in-depth understanding of pertinent
scriptures.
Mastery means control, thorough knowledge, full
competence to use or apply, and complete
proficiency. Learning the mastery scriptures provides
a solid foundation for building a lifetime of scripture
study. Success in meeting this objective will depend
largely upon your attitude as the teacher. Expecting
your students to learn the scripture mastery passages
is the key to successfully motivating them to do so.
missionary application, and personal application
for each passage
3. An annotation (key word or words) for each
scripture mastery passage
4. Several cross-references for each passage
5. Statements or situations relating to each scripture
mastery passage
6. Methods to help students master the passages
7. A variety of ways to scripture chase
8. Helps for memorizing the passages
9. Ways to test students' mastery of the passages
The suggestions in this guide arc not intended as an
exhaustive summary of methodology. Please feel free
to adapt these ideas to your particular situation.
Many of the methods given are, or can be, based on
competition. Competition can easily be overdone;
therefore, you should be sensitive to the feelings of
students who are not competitive or who are slow
learners. Noncompetitive ways to encourage scripture
mastery or allowing students to assist one another
will help these students enjoy learning the scriptures.
Scripture mastery should supplement the regular
seminary study of the standard works. By no means
should it overshadow the daily, sequential study of
the scriptures. You must be wise in the time you
allot to scripture mastery, giving the regular
curriculum priority. Home-study teachers must be
particularly careful that the weekly class does not
turn into a weekly scripture chase.
Students should not mutilate or abuse copies of the
scriptures to succeed in activities such as scripture
chase. Taping or gluing pages together, laminating
specific pages, or ripping pages in an effort to
increase speed are not consistent with the respect
due the standard works.
You should review the scriptures your students have
learned in previous years so that fourth-year students
are conversant with the entire list of one hundred
scriptures when they graduate.
This guide has been prepared to assist you in helping
your students master the one hundred scripture
mastery passages. It contains the following material:
As a new scripture mastery passage is introduced,
each student should mark it in his or her scriptures.
The passage should be read aloud, difficult words and
ideas defined, and the historical setting, doctrinal
teaching, missionary application, and personal
application introduced.
1 . The twenty-five scripture mastery passages
associated with each of the four courses
2. The historical setting, and a doctrinal teaching,
Scripture mastery cards are available with each
course to help students review and study the selected
passages.

its truthfulness.
Approach your study of
the Book of Mormon as

him about personal
weakness.
Our weaknesses can

Method., {Iff Teaching and Review
Audiovisual Aids
Audiovisual aids may be used in the scripture
mastery learning process and in scripture chasing.
After using the appropriate visual or audio, let the
students find the applicable scripture and discuss it.
Do not use visual and audio aids that are suggestive,
vulgar, or inappropriate for a seminary classroom.
Newspapers and Magazines
Show headlines, movie and local advertisements,
and pictures to the class or give each zone/group
their own newspapers. Allow five minutes to find as
many articles, cartoons, stories, or advertisements as
possible that pertain to any of the scriptures to be
reviewed. At the end of the five minutes, allow each
zone two minutes to share the information from the
newspaper that relates to the scriptures. Zones could
be awarded points for each scripture that is matched
to something in the paper.
Local Broadcast News
Whether you copy and replay or simply paraphrase
the broadcast, the news has a wealth of application
opportunities for scripture mastery. Be careful of
copyright infringement.
Audio
Using cassette recorders and record players, play
appropriate instrumental music, songs, hymns,
sounds, and words. Be careful of copyright
infringement.
Video Recorders
Record recent news and advertisements, or produce
your own news, advertisements, and stories. Again,
be careful to avoid violating copyright laws or using
inappropriate material.
Slides and Filmstrips
Many of the audiovisual aids provided by the
department or other appropriate slides could be
utilized. Avoid any copyright violation.
Use of Programs Taped from the Air
Most programs on television may be recorded from
the air. A program taped off the air may be used in
the classroom if the following criteria are met:
1 . It may be retained no more than forty-five
. calendar days, and then it must be erased.
2. The tape may only be used in the classroom
during the first ten school days following the
recording.
3. Generally, only one showing of the tape per class
is permitted.
4. Showing of specific segments must not alter the
overall message or content of the program.
s . The tapes may not be duplicated for sharing with
others.
6. All copies of off-the-air recordings must include
the program's copyright notice.
Most pay-television programs deny rights to copy.
Recording programs off the air should not be a
routine practice.
Bulletin Boards
Bulletin boards or posters are a visual way of
continually emphasizing scripture mastery passages.
Examples
1 . A bulletin board centering around the theme of
scripture mastery scriptures could be displayed at
the beginning of the year with a new passage
emphasized each week.
2. Applicable pictures and phrases could be placed
around one scripture.
3. A mystery board could be produced with a new
clue added daily for the scripture of the week.
Each day have the students write down their guess
and turn them into their zone/group leader. The
zones with the most correct guesses should receive
appropriate recognition.
Chaining
Chaining is linking together a series of scriptures
that have a common theme or idea. Pick four or five
scriptures that relate to the mastery scripture. These
could come from the recommended list of
cross-reference scriptures provided or from the
Topical Guide in the back of the LDS edition of the
King James Version of the Bible.
You could circle the scripture mastery verse in the
Topical Guide to serve as a reminder of the
beginning of the chain.
Examples
1 . Starting with the key scripture, chain it to the
next by writing "Go to {reference} . " Chain the
second scripture to the third and so on.
Cross-reference the last scripture to the first,
making the chain complete.
2. Write down three or four references next to the
mastery scripture. Cross-reference each of these
back to the original scripture.
Problem Solving
One way to help students appreciate the scriptures is
to help them see how the scriptures can be applied
in their lives. When a student asks a question in
class or comes to you with a problem, help him find
37
the answer in the scriptures. If possible, use scripture
mastery passages. Be alert for problems or situations
you could use as examples in class.
Example
One student has been offended by another. Should
she find a way to get revenge ? Discuss
Leviticus 19: 18 with the student and help her see
that love is more effective than revenge.
Have individual or zone/group competition to find
an answer in the scriptures to a real life situation or
problem. Give students extra credit if they solve the
question from the scriptures, or give the answer, and
then have the students find a scripture to
substantiate it.
Have a class question box. Prior to the day the
questions are answered, give the questions to class
members and assign them to find the answers from
the scriptures. Write a few mastery references on the
board, and have students pick the reference that
answers the question and tell why.
Student Talks
Assign each student a specific scripture mastery
passage and adequate time in class or at home to
prepare a talk using footnotes, the Topical Guide,
and personal experiences.
Each talk should have an introduction, the scripture
quoted, and a story or example; it should conclude
with a testimony of the particular gospel concept
addressed. Each talk can last from two to five
minutes, and one or two could be given each day.
You may wish to evaluate the talks as part of the
students' grade or zone/group points. This method
should not be used more than once or twice a year.
Chalkboard Thoughts
In a comer of the chalkboard write "Scriptures Have
the Answer. " Each day of class, write a question and
list a scripture mastery reference that contains the
answer. For example, What could I be doing to
prepare for my mission? (see Alma 3 7:35 ) .
Watch for these kinds of references as you study and
teach the scriptures. As the year progresses you may
wish to have students supply the questions and
answers.
Scripture of the Week
Pick a scripture and emphasize it in several ways
during the week.
1 . Read it as a class each day of the week.
2. Have a student read it in devotional.
3. Display it on a bulletin board.
38
4. Have students write it down each day.
5. Have students memorize a portion of the scripture
each day.
Role Playing
Role playing is a technique that uses students to play
a role in front of the class to demonstrate a concept,
scripture, or story.
Example
Dan has always wanted to go on a mission. Now
that he is eighteen, he has a girlfriend and a good
job he does not want to leave. Josh is a good friend
who would like to see Dan serve the Lord.
Dan's Instruction
You want to do what is right but are frustrated with
all of your current choices. Listen to Josh and see if
he can help.
Josh's Instruction
Dan is perplexed but listens to you. Help him by
using the scriptures and some good advice.
Some scriptures that Josh could use are Doctrine and
Covenants 1 8 : 1 0 , 1 5 - 16; 1 Nephi 3 : 7 ; Moses 1 :39;
Jeremiah 1 6 : 1 6 ; and Matthew 6:24.
Variation
Divide the class into groups or zones. Give each
group a mastery scripture and allow them five
minutes to plan their demonstration. Each group acts
out the scripture at the front of the class. If the class
guesses the reference , you may want to award points
to the zone that performed and to the zone that
guessed correctly. Points could also be given for
preparation and involvement.

Discuss which words would be most essential if the
verse were limited to (eight) words or less.
..

\3
Students can be encouraged to substitute their own
names for the names of individuals in a particular
scripture. This technique serves to help personalize
the scripture so the students understand how the
scripture applies to them. For xample, Doctrine and
Covenants 64:9 reads, "Wherefore, I say unto you,
that ye ought to forgive one another " (emphasis
added) . Using name substitution, the verse would
read, "Wherefore, I say unto [your name] , that [your
name] ought to forgive [anyone who offends you] . "
Ask the students to abridge or summarize the
scripture mastery verse, being careful not to change
the meaning. Or, encourage students to look for
words or phrases which if left out could change the
meaning.

Learning Aids
Learning aids or individual worksheets can be an
effective way of mastering the scriptures. This
section contains various methods that you can use to
create your own learning aids for students.
Learning aids should be used to help the students
develop skills they need in order to better
understand the scriptures.
Not only should you have the students work through
the learning aids, but you should help students
identify the skills used in each learning aid. Include
these skills in your normal lesson presentation, and
encourage students to apply these skills to their
personal study of the scriptures.
Suggest that students read the section or chapter
before reading the heading, and then ask them to
write their own chapter heading. Students should
then compare theirs with the ones in the scriptures.
Find an edition of the scriptures without the current
chapter headings. Compare the two editions to help
students understand the contribution of the scripture
editions now in use.
Footnotes, Index, Topical Guide, and
Cross-references
Ask students questions that will stimulate the use of
the footnotes, index, Topical Guide, and
cross-references.
39
Make an overhead transparency of an entire page of
scripture. Use the enlarged form for class discussion.
Have each student finish a statement in his own
words. I can keep the Sabbath day holy

Identifying Key Words
Have students circle or underline what they believe
to be the most important words in a scripture
passage. Sometimes it helps to suggest a certain
number of key words that they should find.
Help the class identify what they feel is most
important in the scripture.
Ask each student to prepare a list of things he or she
can do to better live the principles taught.
Writing Questions
Defining Difficult Words or Phrases
Identify phrases from a mastery scripture and have
students put the phrases in their own words. Guide
this activity to ensure accuracy. You could also have
students write definitions for words you have
identified. Compare their definitions with dictionary
definitions.
Make a list of difficult words from the scripture
verse. Have the students match them to modem
terms you have listed. Another option would be to
list difficult words or phrases on the learning aid;
then prior to class discussion, have students check
the meanings of any words they do not understand.
Personal or Life Applications
Ask students specific questions on how they can
apply the scripture to their own lives. Be sure to ask
questions that will help your students identify their
own feelings about the scripture and its teachings.
To apply a scripture to their own lives, have
students make commitments as the scripture is
studied.
40
As they read the verse, have students write questions
about concepts they do not understand.
After completing a few learning aids, have your
students use their own ideas to create a learning aid
by developing questions that will help fellow
students apply the scripture. You may want to use
this as a group rather than an individual activity.
Crossword Puzzle
Construct a crossword puzzle using the annotation
for each mastery scripture, or use specified key words
of your choosing. The clues could be the scripture
references or written situations. If you have second-,
third-, and fourth-year students, you may want to
. include scriptures used in previous years. This could
also be used as a take-home review.
True or False Exercise
Ask students a question or give a statement which is
either true or false. Have them prove the statement
true or false by turning to the appropriate scripture
mastery passage. For example, The Holy Ghost has a
body of flesh and bones (false; see D&C 1 30:22 - 23 ) .
Scripture Games
Caution and wisdom should be used any time
a game is played in the classroom. The game
itself should not overshadow but should
facilitate learning, and care should be taken
that the Spirit is not offended.
There are a number of enjoyable activities
described on the following pages, but they
should be used sparingly and never as a
substitute for the basic scripture curriculum.
Including ideas for learning games is not an
endorsement for their indiscriminate use.
Scripture Games
Concentration
If the squares do not match and the zone says they
match, award bonus points to all the other zones.
Prepare a concentration board (see the example
below ) . It could be drawn on the chalkboard, made
into a transparency for an overhead projector, or
made on a plywood board with hooks attached.
Do not allow students to use their books, although if
the activity is used early in the year books could be
allowed. This game of concentration can be used as
a review for a test.
A transparency can be shown on the chalkboard so
that when a match is made, you mark an X through
the matched squares. If a transparency is shown on a
screen, cover the squares with small slips of paper.
You will also need a control sheet (see the second
example) .

If the two squares match and the zone says they do,
the zone gets a predetermined number of points and

If the squares match and the zone says they do not,
their tum is over. ( Do not say anything. Allow a

clue, and have them identify its reference from
memory. Let the zone members consult with each
other for five to ten seconds. The zone leader then

square. If the answer is incorrect, an 0 goes in the
square. Each correct answer is worth five points for
the zone. The first zone to get Tic-Tac-Know, three

Variation
Make one large board for the class, and have each
zone try to get three X s (or whatever symbol they
choose) in a row. To get an X , they must correctly
give the reference in five seconds or less.

Scripture Pictures
Divide the chalkboard into as many sections as you
have zones/groups competing. If you have a small
chalkboard, have one zone representative at a time
go to the board. Have a representative from the first
zone draw a picture of the scripture selected by the
zone without using any numbers, letters, or words.
The first person in the class to identify and locate
the scripture gets a point, or you may choose to give
zone points.
You might also rotate into the artist's place in each
zone and compete with the students.
participants. The cards should remain in a pile on
the table in front of each student. The object of the
game is for a player to get rid of all his or her cards.
To play, a student picks up the top card from his
pile and places it scripture side up in the center of
the table. He then declares the reference. Any
student can challenge his answer, which is checked
by turning the card over where the scripture
reference is printed. The following consequences are
possible:
If the scripture reference is named correctly and no
one challenges, the card stays on the pile on the
table.
If the scripture reference is named correctly and is
challenged, the challenger puts the card at the
bottom of his pile.
Scripture Bee
The scripture bee activity is most effective if held
outside class time with students from different classes
or seminaries competing against each other. In large
seminaries, fourth-year students could compete
against each other using all one hundred scripture
mastery passages, third-year students using
seventy-five scriptures, second-year students using
fifty scriptures, and first-year students using the
twenty-five they have received this year. Awards for
this activity may be appropriate.
The rules are as follows:
1 . The contestant IS given the clue.
2 . The contestant has five seconds to begin
speaking.
3 . When the contestant begins to speak, he or she
should repeat the clue and then give the answer.
4. After the contestant repeats the clue, he or she
Will be given an additional fifteen seconds to
complete the answer. The answer must be held t
the first thing said. It cannot be changed.
If the scripture reference named is incorrect and is
challenged, the player takes back his card and all
other cards in the pile into his pile.
If the scripture reference quoted is incorrect and
none of the other students challenge, the player
takes the card back and places it at the bottom of
his pile. If no one challenges, the card is still turned
over to verify if the student was correct.
The activity continues until one person has no cards
left. He is the winner.
An alternative is to have the clue side of the cards

Scripture Chase
A proven way to help master the scriptures is
scripture chase. This section includes a
variety of methods and sample situations.
Remember that the main objective of
scripture chase is to help students master the
selected passages.
Scripture Chase
Basic Scripture Chase
Materials Needed
Each student needs his or her personal copy of the
standard works.
Preparation
Divide the class into zones/groups, and appoint a
leader.
Procedure
Read a scripture passage, a situation, or an
annotation related to one of the mastery scriptures.
You may let students begin looking for the scripture
as soon as you start reading, or you may have them
wait until you say "go . " Give them a predetermined
amount of time to locate the scripture.
When members of a zone find the scripture, they
raise their hand or put a hand on top of their book
to indicate to the zone leader that they have found
the scripture. When all zone members have found
the scripture, the zone leader stands up or raises his
hand.
Competition for a scripture ends when a specified
amount of time has elapsed or when a specified
number of zones/groups have found the scripture.
There are several scoring possibilities. Points can be
given for each individual student who has the
correct scripture, for each complete zone with the
correct scripture, or for a specified number in the
zone finding the scripture. You can give an
additional speed point for the first student in the
class to find the scripture. You can also give a
different number of points to the first, second, and
third zones to find the scripture. If zones tie, give
them equal points.
Teams can be disqualified for a scripture point if
there is talking or showing scriptures during
competition, or if the wrong reference is cited. As
an alternative you can specify that they may help
each other.
If you desire to determine the winning group in your
class and the groups differ in size, you may want to
divide the final number of points a group scores for
the day by the number of people in the group.

procedure, turning to the next scripture on the
transparency.
Materials Needed
When the paper gets to the first person in the row,
that person writes down the last reference, gets the
answer sheet from the teacher, returns to his or her
seat, checks the zone's answers, wads up the paper,
and throws it in the wastebasket in front of the
zone. If the student misses, he or she has to retrieve
the paper and try again until making a basket.
1 . A basket (A wastebasket will do. )
2. A ball. A small, soft ball is preferable. Balls made
of paper ancl/or tape can also be used.
Playing the Game
Before beginning the game, mark three places of
varying distances from the basket: one to represent a
two-point shot, one a four-point shot, and one a
six-point shot.
This activity is similar to regular scripture chase. A
point is scored for each person in the zone who finds
the correct scripture. Each zone with all members
finding the correct scripture chooses one
representative to go to the front of the room and
attempt a shot at the basket from the two-point
range. If successful, they move to the four-point
range and then the six-point range. A zone cannot
send the same person to shoot the ball twice in a
row.
Variation
Allow the person who gets the speed point to shoot.
Fast Break Chase
When the first zone completes their "fast break" by
making a basket, the teacher says "stop . " He then
writes that zone's time on the chalkboard. It is
important to do this at the end of each round.
The teacher should read the correct references for
the zones that did not finish.
For the next round, the first person in the zone
moves to the last seat, and everyone else moves
forward.
Scoring
Each zone gets a predetermined number of points for
each correct scripture they found.
The first zone to find all the scriptures gets an
additional number of points. The zone with the
fastest time at the end of several rounds gets extra
bonus points.
Example Round
Materials Needed
1 . A wastebasket or other type of container for each
zone.
2. An overhead projector and screen.
3. A transparency with five annotations (one for
each scripture used) for each round played. (See
the example following the scoring instructions. )
4. An answer sheet for each zone with the
annotations and references identified.
5. A blank sheet of paper for each zone/group.
6. A stopwatch or a watch with a second hand.
Playing Rules
Arrange the zones in rows. Give the last person in
each row a blank sheet of paper.
Place the transparency with the annotations on the
projector, and tum it on so that all the annotations
can be seen. Begin timing.
The zone member beginning (the last person in each
row) sees the first annotation, looks up the
reference, writes it on the paper, and hands the
paper forward to the next person. If he does not
know the reference, he may ask the person in front,
who can ask the person in front of him until
someone can pass the answer back to the one
chasing. He must then look up the reference before
he can write it down. No one can leave his seat to
pass a reference back. Each zone member follows this

Scripture Bowling
To play this game, you will need a bowling score

a second hand.
Have each zone/group leader write the players' names

the board:

First, a participant who gets no score in the tenth
frame is finished and can total his points.
Explain the bowling marks and point keeping, which
should be recorded on the score sheet after each
scripture chase situation.
Second, a participant who gets an open frame in the
tenth frame gets ten points and can figure his score.
Example
Read a scripture or a situation, and say "go. " Keep
track of the seconds. When five seconds have
passed, call out "strike"; after ten seconds, call out
"spare"; and, finally, after fifteen seconds, call out
"open. " This ends the frame.
Third, a participant who earns a spare in the tenth
frame gets twenty points plus one more scripture
situation. The totals of both tenth frame situations
are then added to his total.
Fourth, a participant who earns a strike in the tenth
frame gets twenty-five points and two more scripture
chase situations. The total of all three situations are
then added to his or her total.
The first thing a student heard you call out after
locating the correct scripture is his or her score for
that frame. A student who did not find the correct
scripture within fifteen seconds does not score any
points. The zone leader then asks each person's score
and records X, /, 0, or - . The zone leader will
then record the points earned, keeping a cumulative
score for each person (see sample score sheet) . The
game continues in this manner until the tenth
frame, where there are four possible scoring
opportunities.
Options
1 . Determine the best individual score.
2. Find the best zone average by adding each zone
member's score and dividing the total by the
number of people in that zone.
3. Find the best class score by adding the zone
averages and dividing by the number of zones
within the class.

ALhletic Variations of Scripture Chase
Golf Chase
Prepare an individual score card like the one shown
above. Remember, in golf the lowest score wins.
Give each student a score card. Give the scripture
clue, and count to ten at whatever pace is
appropriate. The students find the correct verse and
record the first number you called after the scripture
was found. Give the answer so students can be sure
they are correct. The lowest score for each clue is
one. Eighteen would be a perfect score (see score
card ) . A student who does not find the verse must
take a ten as a score .
You may wish to score this individually or to have
all the members of a zone/group add their final scores
together for zone points.
Variation
Certain materials are needed: a golf ball, a putter,
and a ball return machine or a small box with a hole
cut in it. A shoe box works very well.
Give a scripture clue and say "go . " The first
zone/group to have everyone find the scripture gets
points. Someone from that zone also gets a chance
to score more points by putting the golf ball. For
putting, put tape on the floor at three different
distances, such as a five-point range, a ten-point
range, and a fifteen-point range. Let the person
determine what distance to putt from. Points are
given if the ball goes in the hole. You may wish to
let the first person to find the scripture do the
putting.
Track Meet
General Instructions
Read the clue, and have the students begin when
you say "go . " Counting begins as soon as the
scripture clue is given.
A person scratches ( is out of the competition) by
touching his or her book too soon, failing to find the
correct scripture in the time given, or exceeding a
predetermined score for an event.
Give students a number for each event to represent
scratch. That number will depend upon the type of
track or field event. When you count up, it will be
the highest number given, and when you count
down, it will be the lowest number given.
You could make up other events in addition to the
ones below.
One-Hundred-Meter Race
Run three heats. Heat one should have the hardest
clue and heat three the easiest clue.
Begin your count with seven and count up to
twenty-two, for about fifteen seconds of countin!;.
Each number represents one second.
Scratch would be twenty-two or higher.
Fifteen-Hundred-Meter Race
In this race you will use ten different scriptures.
Give the first clue, say "go , " and begin to count
from five. When you get to fifteen, give the answer
to the first situation and have students record their
scores. Then give the second clue. Continue this
procedure until all ten scriptures are given.
The scratch number for each round is fifteen.
Students add up the ten different numbers to get
their time.
l lO-Meter Hurdles
The hurdles are similar to the one-hundred-meter
race. Begin your counting with ten and count up to
thirty.
High Jump
Begin the competition at six feet and move up in
three-inch intervals. Those students locating the
passage in a predetermined number of seconds have
cleared the height. Allow up to three misses per
height. Stop the competition at no more than eight
feet.
Pole Vault
Pole vault is played the same as the high jump. Start
at fifteen feet and go up to twenty-two feet in
six-inch increments.
Shot Put
Give the scripture clue and begin counting down
from seventy to forty. The number you say after the
student finds the reference becomes the number of
feet the shot was thrown by that student. You may
want to allow students three attempts and have them
record their best score.
As an alternative, you could record the event, clues,
and count on a tape recorder.
Javelin
In each event the students record the first number
they hear you say after they have found the
scripture.
Handle the javelin the same way as the shot put, but
start your count at two hundred seventy and go
down to two hundred.
55
Drag Race
You will need paper and a pencil for each student.
Prepare a cassette tape before class or conduct the
game live. Taping it gives you a chance to circulate
around the room.
On the tape, you could record the sound of engines
revving up as you welcome students to the drag
races. You then give a clue. As soon as you finish

the clue, the students begin turning to the correct
scripture. When you finish giving the clue, you
begin counting down from ten. When you reach
zero, give the reference. As the students find the
references, they record the number they heard first
after finding the scripture. If they have the wrong
reference, they do not score. You can go as many
rounds. or races as you want. At the end of the race,
have students total their points. High point total

OneonOne and Individual
Scripture Chase
One-un-One and Individual Scripture Chase
Bid a Scripture
Each zone/group chooses a representative. Two zones
will compete each round. You determine the
rotation order {zone one against zone two and so
on} . The participants sit in chairs in the front of the
class. They cannot use their books. The chase
proceeds as follows:
There are only two students who might not move,
the winner if he or she is already in desk number
one and the loser if he or she is already in the last
desk. If during a given round the students in a pair
tie, give a tiebreaker to those two students to see
who rotates up and who moves back.
First, give a clue to let the students know the book
or part of the book the scripture is coming from.
Next, the contestant who is to be first says, "I can
words. " Suppose
name that scripture in
the first student said four words. The other
contestant could either say, "I can name it in three
words" or challenge the first contestant to name the
scripture.
Once one of the contestants has challenged the
other to name the scripture , read from the beginning
of the verse the number of words the contestant said
he or she could name it in. If the contestant gives
the correct reference, his or her zone gets the
designated number of points. If the first contestant
misses, the other contestant can try. If the second
student fails, turn to the class and give them the
words again. The game then becomes a regular
scripture chase. Award points for the first individual
to find the passage and for the first zone to find it.
Note: Do not let students look up the reference until
you have given the class the clue. You should not
give more than nine words.

Quick Draw
Students are paired either sitting or standing
depending on the variation you use. The winner is
the first one to find the correct scripture after the
clue has been given.
Variation One
The entire class stands, and a scripture clue is given.
A student who finds the reference within ten
seconds remains standing. Anyone who does not
locate the correct reference in the time limit sits
down. As more clues are given, less time is given to
find the scripture until only one quick draw is left
standing.
Variation Two
Instead of the entire class standing, only the boys
stand. They compete against each other until there
is one winner. The girls then compete with each
other until there is one winner. The boy and girl
champion then square off and draw against each
other. The fastest with three out of five scriptures is
the winner.
Challenge Chair
Quick draw can also be played putting stakes, wards,
high school classes, or zones against each other.
The objective is to end up in chair number one or to
advance as far forward as possible. Begin by
arranging chairs in pairs in a semicircle in the room.
With students occupying the chairs, give a scripture
situation or annotation. When a student finds the
correct reference, he reaches over and touches the
desk of the student he is paired with_ The winner of
each pair moves up to the next pair of desks, and
the loser of each pair moves down to the next lower
pair of desks.
Stump the Zones
Each zone tries to stump the other zones. One zone
member reads five consecutive words from a
scripture. The class has a given time limit to find
the scripture. The zone scores one point for each
person in the other zones who does not find the
reference. Continue until all zones have had an
equal opportunity.

Clue
Choose four or five key words from each scripture.
Some of them should be quite general and difficult
to find, and others should be very specific giveaway
clues. To chase, read one of the words from a given
scripture. Read the difficult words first. Wait five
seconds, then read the second key word for the same
scripture; continue this until the last clue, which
should be so obvious that everyone will know the
scripture. The students may begin chasing as soon as
the first key word is read.
In scoring, allow the most points for zones or
individuals finding the reference after the first clue
and less for each additional clue.

The object of this game is to fill all five boxes in a
row for fifteen points. Each student is given a score
sheet similar to the one shown. The student colors
in the blank box in column one (see the example) .
o u then give a clue. After ten to twelve seconds,
time is called. If the correct reference has been
I cated, the student colors in box two in row one
and continues through the five boxes in row one
until reaching box fifteen, providing he or she finds
the correct reference with each clue.
A student who gives an incorrect reference colors in
the blank box in column two and continues in that
column until reaching the top box or failing to find
the correct reference. Every time an incorrect
response is given, or the scripture is not found in
time, the student moves to the next column.
To determine the final score, have the students tally
the number of points in the boxes they colored in.
The game does not require that all twenty rows be
used.

Preparation
Before class list on the chalkboard the scripture
references that are to be reviewed.
3
Prepare one or two situations or problems for each
scripture to be reviewed.
4
Procedure

each student write the chalkboard references on a
zingo sheet. There should only be one reference per
block. If there are more blocks than references, have
students use the references more than once.

Round 1
Round 2
Every student randomly draws one scripture man,
one scripture woman, one bomb, one temptation
man, three smiling faces, and eighteen scripture
pellets in the various squares. You then give a
situation or scripture clue. A student who finds the
reference in ten seconds or less can mark off a square
on his sheet. To determine which square is marked
off, you pull a marker out of a cup or jar and read it
to the class (for example, A I , B3 , or 04) . All the
students who found the scripture check off the
square called out and record their points for that

read off each scripture reference so you can verify
the references. The game continues until a student
has zingo horizontally, vertically, diagonally, or, if
specified, has marked off all the blocks in the zingo

submarine (one S ) , and four mines (draw four
separate bombs) . Ships can be marked horizontally,
vertically, or diagonally (see example) . No speed
point is given in this chase.

Procedure
Give a blank grid to each student to keep track of
hits and misses, using an X for hits and an 0 for
misses. Begin with a regular scripture chase. Let the
first two zones who find the scripture shoot at the
ships. They designate which square by calling a
letter and a number. For example, B5 or G3. Points
are awarded if they hit a ship.
Suppose zone one was first to find the scripture and
they selected C5 . Each student would record
whether it was a hit or a miss. If they hit a ship,
they would get one point and could keep guessing
until they missed or hit a mine. When they miss,
then the second zone guesses. When a team sinks a
ship by guessing the last of the squares it fills, they
get all the points that ship is worth. If they hit a
mine, they loose a tum and four points.
Scoring
The missionary's zone is awarded five points for each
convert plus an additional ten points for converting
one person from each zone.
Variation
Send your top missionary to a foreign mission
(another teacher's room) . Exchange missionaries. Of
course, this will work only if other teachers in the
seminary are using the same method.
Variation
Half the class are missionaries and half are
investigators. All missionaries are sent at the same
time. Each missionary keeps a card to record the
names of "converts. " Missionaries use their own
scriptures; otherwise the same rules apply. After five
to seven minutes, the missionaries and investigators
change roles.

Misccllaneous Scripture Chase
Individuals
Give the class a scripture clue. The first person to
raise his or her hand with the correct answer
receives points for the zone/group, and for each
correct answer you drop a small piece of candy into
the cup.
When enough candies have been placed into the cup
to outweigh the paper clips, the cup will fall. The
individual who causes the cup to drop receives the
candy for his zone, and the game can begin again.
By Zone
To play by zone the teacher gives the key words or
situations and the entire zone must find the
scripture. The zone who drops the cup receives the
candy.
Scripture J ourney
Each student needs a copy of the map, Passover
Road. A student starts the scripture journey at the
Mediterranean Sea and tries to arrive in Jerusalem.
Give a clue to the class and then count backward
from ten. A student who locates the scripture moves
forward as many spaces as the number heard
immediately after finding the reference. For example,
a student who found the reference just before you
said six, would move forward six spaces.
It may take fifteen to twenty minutes to complete
the journey. Part of the fun, however, is to tell the
class, "Today we will only be playing for
by that
minutes. See if you can make it to
time . "
_

A variation could include doubling of moves- odds

maps could be created for other courses.
Hangman
Each student should draw hangman gallows on a
blank piece of paper. G ive a clue and let the
students chase against the clock for ten or fifteen
seconds. If they fail to find the scripture, they add a
part of the body to the gallows. Be sure that the
parts of the body they add before a student is "hung"
are predetermined, such as head, body, arms, and
legs.
Two misses
Three misses
Scripture Puzzle
On a sheet of poster board draw or paste a picture
representing a scripture mastery passage, and cut the
picture into several puzzle pieces. You will need a
picture representing a different scripture for each
zone. The task is for each zone/group to reconstruct
the picture, identify the scripture, and locate the
reference within the time limit.
Scripture Relay
Arrange the zones/groups so each zone occupies a
complete row of seats from front to back. Give a
sheet of paper to the last person in each row. Make
sure the first person in each row has a set of
scriptures. Give a scripture clue. When you say "go, "
the students in the last seat of each row write down
what they think the reference is and pass the paper
forward to the next person in the row. That student
looks at it and passes it on if he 0r she agrees with
it. If the student does not agree , he or she crosses
out the reference and writes the correct one. The
sheet works its way along the row in this manner.
When the answer sheet reaches the front student in
the row, that person must decide if the reference is
correct. If it is correct, he or she must locate it in
the scriptures. If it is not correct the student may
change it and locate it in the scriptures. The student
then raises his or her hand, indicating the zone has
finished.
You check the sheet and the scripture reference
found. If they are correct, the zone receives a certain
number of points. The student in the front of each
row moves to the back seat, and everyone moves up
a seat. You give another scripture clue, and the relay
starts over again.
Variation
To begin
One miss
Require each person to write a scripture reference on
the sheet as it moves along the row. A team member
may write down a reference that is already on the
sheet, or a different one if he or she thinks the
reference is wrong. This variation gets everyone
involved, even though everyone may not know the
scriptures well.
67
Hot Seat
Paper Chase
Arrange each zone/group in a row. Tum the front
desk in each row around so it is facing the other
students in the zone. Give a clue. The students in
the front desks are the only ones to begin chasing.
The other students must keep their scriptures closed.
As soon as a student in a front desk finds the
scripture, he yells "go, " and the team begins
chasing.
Each student needs a pencil or pen and a piece of
paper. Have the students number both sides of their
papers from one to the number of scriptures being
reviewed.
Award speed points and zone points. Speed points
are only earned from the front desks. Zone points go
to whichever zone gets all their hands up first. After
each round rotate different people to the hot seats.
Object Chase
Materials Needed
Find an object or picture that represents each of the
scriptures to be reviewed, for example:
1 . Money (see Jacob 2: 18- 19)
2. Hymn book (see D&C 2 5 : 1 2)
3 . Clock or picture of someone running (see
Genesis 39:9)
4. An idol (see Exodus 20:3 - 1 7)
5. Picture of two people talking (see Exodus 33 : 1 1 )
6 . Candle (see Matthew 5 : 14- 16)
7. Picture of angel Moroni (see Revelation 14:6-7)
Each student should have scriptures, a pencil or pen,
and a piece of paper.
Preparation
Put the objects in a box or bag so they can be
revealed one at a time. Before the activity have
students number their papers to match the number
of items you have. Students can participate as
individuals, pairs, or zones.
Procedure
Read a scripture reference, a situation, or an
annotation related to the scripture and count aloud
to ten. Students write down what they think the
reference is.
If students cannot put down the reference within ten
seconds after you have read the reference, have them
write IDK for I don't know.
After reading all the scripture references, give the
correct answers. Have students check their own
papers by marking the ones they missed and writing
the correct references.
Ask which scriptures were missed, and review those
scriptures with the class. Then have students tum
their papers over. Give the clues again in a different
order. Have the papers corrected, and check
improvement.
Fishing Chase
Materials Needed
Each zone/group will need one 114" dowel three feet
long with a string attached for the fishing line and a
bent paper clip for a hook.
You will need to make a fish for each scripture
situation. Use five-by-seven cards folded in half with
holes punched in the middle of each fold (see
example) . These cards are the fish. Write the
annotation on the card or clip it to the card.
hole
C
Procedure
Reveal one item at a time. Allow students thirty
seconds or so to determine which scripture the
object represents. Students should be encouraged to
use their scriptures jf they need them.
After thirty seconds tell students they must write
down a scripture reference. Present another object.
Leave the objects out so students can continue to
think about them.
Once all the objects have been presented, allow
students a few minutes to make changes on their list
of scriptures. Next, give the correct reference for
each object, and award points for each correct
answer.
68
Procedure
Place all the fish cards, creased side up, on a table.
They will look like small tents. One person from
each zone comes forward with the fishing pole. On
signal they begin to fish by trying to hook the bent
paper clip in the hole on the card. They must hold
on to the end of the pole and not touch the line
with their fingers.
A student who hooks a fish lifts the card from the
table and takes it to his or her zone. The zone then
reads the situation, and everyone finds the verse in
the scriptures. You may want to let zone members
help each other.
Miscellaneous Scripture Chase
can begin the chase as soon as they recognize the
scripture. Award points for individual and
zone/group.
Note on the chalkboard the zones' finishing order. If
everyone in a zone has located the correct scripture,
then award points. The first zone to finish gets five
points, the second zone gets four points, and so on.

Memorization
While it is not required that students
memorize all one hundred scriptures, they
should be encouraged to do so. The following
are methods that can be used to help students
memorize scripture mastery passages.
scripture raise their hands. Choose any scripture
from a student's sheet to have the student quote.
Mark the reference so you do not call for the same
one each time.
Awards and Recognition
Visible awards and recognition will motivate many
students to memorize on their own. Awards must be
given soon after completion to be effective. Awards
and recognition can be overemphasized or
cheapened, so make sure the awards are meaningful
and are in harmony with your area director's
guidelines. The following methods have proven
successful.
The zone or student is awarded a certain number of
points for correctly quoting the scripture passage.
Allow one quotation per zone per day. Do not allow
any one student to dominate.
Choral Recitation
Scripture Club
To be a member of the scripture club, a student
must memorize the mastery scriptures.
Levels of Achievement
The following achievement levels are obtainable
over the four years of seminary:
Read a scripture over and over orally in class, having
the students read with you. Encourage students to
close their books when they feel they can repeat part
of the scripture without looking. Let individual
embers quote the scripture to the class when they
feel they have it memorized.

Memento Presentation
You could give each student some inexpensive
reward that represents the work accomplished. You
could use a pin, certificate, small book, iron-on
decal, seminary letter (similar to a high school
athletic letter) , or special recognition on the
graduation program.
A student who has already passed off three scriptures
to the zone leader may add one scripture each week.
The zone leader gets that student's sheet from you

Use tests to stimulate students to memorize
scriptures. Use their test scores as part of their grades
or as extra credit. Here are several examples of tests
that can be used:
\
i . Have students write out the scripture from
memory on a blank piece of paper.
. Have students recite the scripture orally to you or
I to another class member.
3. Give students a copy of the verse with words
I missing, and have them fill in the blanks.
4. Mix up the words in the verse, and have them
I arrange the words in the correct order.
5 . Give them the first letter of each word and have
: them complete it.
. Give an oral class exam. As you call on different
, students, they must give the next word or phrase,
\ whichever you specify.

Recite the scripture as a class, with class members
each taking a tum giving one word at a time. Have
classes compete to see which one can get through
the verse the most times without a mistake.
Individual Initiative
A student selects three of the scripture mastery
passages to be memorized and passes off those
scriptures to his or her zone leader. The zone leader
writes the references, the student's name, and the
zone name on a sheet of paper and gives the paper
to you.

Word Erase
On the chalkboard write out the scripture to be
memorized. Have the class repeat it several times.
Erase two or three words at a time while the class
continues to repeat the scripture after each erasing
session. Continue the process until all the words are
erased from the board and the class has the verse
memorized.

Word Arrangement
After allowing time in or outside of class to
memorize a scripture passage, give each zone/group
an envelope containing small slips of paper with one
or two words of the verse on each piece of paper. As
a zone, students are to put the words of the scripture
in correct order.
When each zone has finished, shuffle the papers,
and put them back in the envelope. Redistribute the
envelopes, and have one student at a time in each
zone work on the verse with a time limit of ten to
fifteen seconds. When the time expires, the students
should rotate and have another person continue.
Paper Pass
Give students an allotted amount of time to
memorize the mastery scripture. When the time is
up, have the students close their books, and give
each student a blank piece of paper. On your signal
they should begin to write out the verse, including
the reference. Every fifteen seconds have them rotate
papers in an organized manner around the class.
Each student is responsible to correct the paper
received if necessary and then to continue writing
the verse.
Continue the activity until all the papers are
complete. After a predetermined amount of time,
correct the papers. This could be a zone/group
competition, or you could give each student an
appropriate number of points for every correct paper
in the class.
Chalkboard Play
Give the class a scripture to be memorized and about
five minutes to study it. Then have each zone/group
leader stand at the chalkboard with the zone lined
up behind him or her. Each zone leader writes the
first word of the scripture on the board and goes to
the end of the line, the second person moves up and
writes the second word, and so on until the scripture
is written.
Memorization
If anyone writes a wrong word, the next student may
correct it, but that completes that student's turn.
The first group finished correctly is the winner. Felt
pens and a large sheet of butcher paper can be used
as an alternative to the chalkboard, but be careful of
staining the wall behind the paper.

Tests
This section is to be a resource containing
several ideas and examples for testing student
knowledge of the scripture mastery passages.
Tests
Matching
Place scripture references in one column and
annotations or key words in another. The student
matches the references to the appropriate answer.

b. Prophecy concerning the joining of the Bible and
the Book of Mormon
c. God spoke to man face-to-face

statement come from ? "For I am not ashamed of the
gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto
salvation. "
a. John 14: 1 5
b. Acts 7:55 - 56
c. Romans 1 : 1 6
d. Revelation 14:6- 7
___
___
____
____
Situations
Give problem situations applicable to your locale,
with the correct solution being a mastery scripture.
Example
Willy Wisdom's acquaintances continue to tempt
him with alcohol and drugs. They do not understand
how he can be so strong and resist their pressure.
Willy's secret is that he knows the promises made to
those who keep the Word of Wisdom. What are the
promises? (See D&C 89: 1 8 - 2 1 . )
Timed Situations
Make up a test using ten to twenty situations,
annotations, or scripture quotes for the scriptures
learned. Tell the students they will be given a
certain amount of time to complete the test. One
minute for each situation is usually adequate. The
students are to keep their books closed until you tell
them to begin the test.
The object of this test is to determine the students'
knowledge of the scriptures and to see whether or
not they have marked the verses in their scriptures.
They may use their books.
Example
Indicate the scripture reference for each of the
following situations.
(D&C 130: 1 8 - 1 9) 1 . Knowledge is something you
will take with you into the
next life.
( D&C 76:22- 24) 2. Where can we read a
modem-day witness that
Christ lives?
(D&C 59:9- 10)
3. Keep· the sabbath day holy.
(D&C 64:9- 1 1 )
4. "I, the Lord, will forgive
whom I will forgive. "
True and False
Write or give oral situations, phrases, or problems
from the scriptures. Some statements will be true,
and others will be false. Students must determine
whether statements are true or false, and they must
give a reference that verifies their answer.
If you, the teacher, desire, the students could cross
out the incorrect statements on false answers and
write in the correct answer.
Verse Quote
Make up a test by quoting the scriptures that have
been learned. The student is to fill in the scripture
reference. This test might be more effective if used
toward the end of the school year.
You could allow the students to use their books or
take the test from memory. For second-, third- , and
fourth-year students, you may wish to include verses
from previous years.
Example
(Matthew 6:24)
1. "No man can serve two
masters: for either he will hate
the one, and love the other;
or else he will hold to the
one, and despise the other. Ye
cannot serve God and
mammon. "
Annotation Tests
There are two ways to review annotations or key
words with a test. One way is to give a reference and
have the student write the annotation or key word.
1 . D&C 88: 1 2 3 - 24.
2. Matthew 5 : 14- 16.
3. Proverbs 3 :5 - 6 .

Variation
This type of test could also be given orally.
For second-, third-, and fourth-year students, key
words of previous years can be used in any of these
methods to help students review scriptures learned in
previous years of study.
