DANGEROUS BEAUTY
Beauty can be an obsession and with 80% of women polled in a 2006 survey saying that they compete
with other women when it comes to their appearance, finding ways to enhance beauty is becoming
more and more popular. These heightened expecta0ons of beauty can drive some people to act in
dangerous ways. An example is unhealthy methods to lose weight, like smoking or vomi0ng, which
more than half of teenage girls have admi;ed to using. However, common beauty prac0ces can harm
more than a woman's self-esteem; they can even cause serious physical harm. (Source: YWCA USA)
The Beauty Hazards That Made Our List Are:
* Pedicures and Manicures
* Spray tans
* Ar0ficial eye lashes
* Body waxing
* Numbing cream for laser hair removal treatments
Risky Makeup: You may have fond memories of pu)ng on your mom's makeup as a child, but there
could be something more sinister lurking in the widely used products. In two separate FDA
inves0ga0ons, varying amounts of lead were found in every lips0ck tested, even those produced by
popular companies like Revlon, M.A.C., and L'Oreal. Your mascara can also pose a risk with 33% of
mascaras tested in an Oklahoma College of Optometry study having some sort of bacteria, including
staphylococcus. The bacteria can easily enter the eye during applica0on, increasing the risk for eye
infec0ons. (Source: www.Forbes.com)
Avoid the Hazards: Despite the possible hazards, women are most likely not going to stop their beauty
rou0nes any0me soon, but there are some steps that can be taken to ensure you remain gorgeous and
healthy. One being toss old makeup, especially those used around the eyes. Mascara should be safe for
about three months; any longer and you risk bacteria se)ng up a permanent residence on the
mascara wand. Another 0p is to read what ingredients are used in your beauty products and if the
ingredients are not listed, don't use it! (Source: www.Forbes.com)
