WELCOME
Welcome to the study of Intellectual Property Law, which forms part of the course
BIR324.
Intellectual Property Law has become increasingly important in the age of technological
superiority in which we live in. It is at this stage almost impossible to imagine life without
inventions and the accompanying trade marks creating massive revenue for the owners
of these rights. The focus of this part of the BIR324 course will be on Patents, Designs,
Trade Marks and Copyright with a more in depth focus on the latter two areas.
This part of the course is divided into 4 modules.
The following text book is prescribed:
Van der Merwe et al. 2011. Law of Intellectual Property in South Africa. Durban:
LexisNexis.
ISBN 978 0 409 02275 9
This text book is available at Van Schaik Bookstore on the UFS main campus and
through various other national retailers.
