St John’s College Newsletter No. 29 20 September 2013 Dear Parents, Students, Staff, Friends and Carers, The school holidays are upon us. As the term draws to a close, I would like to thank the school community for their support this term. In particular thanks must go to Mrs Baker, Mr O’Connor, Mrs Sutton and Mr Cathcart for adapting to new roles for the term. Next term we welcome back Mr Gold from Long Service Leave and Mrs Rebecca Barrett from Maternity leave. I have recently received an update on the State Government’s laws with regard to under age alcohol consumption. With the holidays upon us it is timely to remind the whole school community that it is illegal to supply alcohol to a minor. The rules apply particularly to slightly older students or to parents who are often tempted to purchase alcohol for parties. Further information is available at : http://www.olgr.qld.gov.au/liquor/responsible/underage/supply/index.shtml The abuse of alcohol and the trend toward binge drinking is a scourge that has serious implications for the physical and mental health of our young people and it is the responsibility of all of us to try to help alleviate the problem. I also believe that the Government is giving fair warning through their publicity campaign that these laws with be strictly enforced in the coming months. Our Netball girls flew out for London yesterday and the East Timor group fly out tonight. We wish both groups safe travel and look forward to hearing their stories on their return. The NAPLAN results for our present year 9 cohort are now in! The individual results will be sent home with the year 9 reports. The overall results are extremely positive. In Language Conventions (22 points above state) , Reading (23 points up), Persuasive Writing (27 points up) and Numeracy (16 points up) this group performed well above state average. Spelling was on the State average for this group this year. The teachers of years 8 and 9 deserve high praise for their work in bringing the students to this standard, as do the students of year 9. It will take us some time to digest all the data available and amend our programs to account for it. Reports for years 8 to 10 will be issued this afternoon and year 11 reports will be posted home. This report is to keep parents and students informed of current progress rather than a full account of where they are at. Year 12 work is currently being collated so that samples of work can be submitted to subject panels for verification after the break. As this is a work in progress, there will not be a report for year 12 at this time. Please remember that the first Monday next term has been designated as Labour Day so school will not resume until Tuesday 8th October. Enjoy the time with the family at home. Dave Cuskelly Unbind and Set Free From the Library desk Holidays are here again and it has been great to see students checking out books by their favourite authors. Trying to promote Australian literature in a US dominated online market can sometimes feel like a losing battle. However, good old aunty, our ABC is running this promotion again… Australia's largest celebration of books and reading, Get Reading! is back in 2013 with the ultimate guides to the best Australian reads. Along with the traditional Top 50 Books You Can't Put Down, in 2013 Get Reading! has collated a list of Australia's 50 favourite homegrown reads, exclusively voted for by subscribers, fans and friends of Get Reading! In September each year, Get Reading! runs a month-long, nationwide campaign focused on inspiring more Australians to discover or rediscover the pleasure of reading. The 2013 Top 50 Books You Can't Put Down have been hand-picked and curated by a panel of authors, booksellers and publishers. The all-Australian list contains something for everyone, from picture books to history, memoirs to popular fiction, award-winners to classics and will be available from Sunday 1 September on the Get Reading! website. http://www.getreading.com.au/ The 2013 Get Reading! campaign runs from 1 September to 30 September and during this time seventeen authors from the Top 50 list will participate in more than one hundred events right across Australia. To see what events are happening in your area, visit www.getreading.com.au/events In last week’s newsletter this column reported on the address given by one of our St John’s staff Penny Horton-Stephens, at the teacher preview of the Afghanistan hidden treasures from Kabul exhibition. The graphic has been reposted here to remind you about the enthralling and informative exhibition. Enjoy your leisure time this holiday. Reports for Years 8 to 10 have been issued to your student today. If your student wasn’t at school to receive their report, it will be posted home. Year 11 reports will be posted home. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS SURFING COMPETITION St John’s College competed in the Catholic Schools competition last week for the first time. Members of the team were: Tom Berryman, Jake Murphy, Jonah Visser, Tomas Kriz, Pat Webber, Mitch Stark, Harry Broeren, Jake Warren, Angus Gemmill, Ryan Mackel, Jye Epstein, Brittany Stark, Bronte Ruegg McMeeking and Kyra Murray. Unity, Siena and St Tereas’s Colleges were the other schools involved. Unity College were successful in taking out the trophy. The competition was held at Kings Beach, Caloundra. Due to exam commitments only Year 8 and 9 students attended. This was a great opportunity for our ‘youngsters’ to take on more experienced suffers from other school. Particular congratulations to Jake Murphy who was a close second in his heat. Rod Kriz ST JOHN’S BOARDRIDERS Term 4 is the commencement of our Boardriders. We are starting our development program under the direction of Brad Lee on a Thursday morning at Mudjimba. We have both Level 2 and Level 1 instructors working closely with the students to help develop their skills. We have a female instructor working with the girls. This year we are focusing on students who already have an intermediate level of skill. Our goal is to develop surfing within the school . We will be conducting a school competition and a camp in term 4. Stay tuned for further details. We are looking for a school surfing logo. Any students wanting to submit a design can see Mr Kriz. Rod Kriz When cancer strikes, young people need support. At CanTeen, we believe that no young person should have to face cancer alone. St John’s College will be selling Bandanna’s and pens to support Cancer the first week of term 4. Everyone can wear their bandanna on Friday 11th October. There is no doubt that having cancer in your life can really mess things up. Everyone is different and everyone will react differently to what is going on. Cancer can be a really scary thing to deal with and it can present all sorts of challenges. Unlike lots of other stuff that you have to deal with, cancer is not something that you may have ever thought about, let alone read about or talked to friends about. You may not be able to deal with it on your own but asking for help can be a pretty scary thing to do. Dealing with everything you're feeling, and talking about it, can be really hard - but totally worth it. There are different ways you can get support to figure it all out: Information Find out more about cancer and how to deal with all aspects of it - medical, emotional and practical. Peer Support Programs Meet other people going through a similar experience. Counselling The CanTeen Counselling Service is a free, specialised service for anyone aged 12-24 years in Australia living with cancer. Individual Support CanTeen has staff and offices throughout the country, supporting thousands of young people living with cancer. Youth Cancer Services Specialised treatment and support services for young people with cancer based in major hospitals throughout Australia. Other Support Services Or all of the above! Support is about whatever works for you. Visit Canteen website http://www.canteen.org.au/ Year 10HPE Next term you will be doing biathlon in HPE. The unit starts in Week One. Thank you Kim Harrison Business Manager 07 5441 5666 Attention parents Please do not use the carpark at the back of the school (off Dandenong St) as a drop off area. This is a staff carpark and due to the nature of the road leading in, staff make the assumption that no cars are coming out at that time of the morning. You are putting yourselves and our staff at risk of a serious accident by using this area to drop off students in the mornings or to pick up in the afternoons. Students are to be dropped off at the front entrance along Perwillowen Road. Thank you for your attention to this issue. Elizabeth Sutton Acting Assistant Principal Social Justice Sunday 29th September We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on 29 September. This year’s Social Justice Statement is titled: ‘Lazarus at our Gate: A critical moment in the fight against world poverty’. The statement by the Australian Catholic Bishops urges all Australians to focus on our obligation to help the world’s poorest and to work to combat poverty wherever it is found. Although progress has been made over the past decade in the fight against extreme poverty, one billion people still live on less than $1.25 per day, and 20 per cent of the world’s poor live in countries near Australia. For further details about the Social Justice Statement, visit the Australian Catholic Social Justice council website (www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au) or call (02) 8306 3499. Announcement of the Social Justice Statement 2013-2014 Lazarus at our Gate: A critical moment in the fight against world poverty. A billion people around the world remain in extreme poverty, and twenty per cent of the world's poorest live in countries near Australia. 'In our region', the Bishops say, 'Australia is the rich man and Lazarus is at our gate.' Pope Francis has reminded us of our mission: 'Fighting poverty, both material and spiritual, building peace and constructing bridges.' Please consider what will you do, as an individual and as a nation, to help the most needy who sit at our gate?
