Vision House 2011 Annual Report

2011 Annual Report
Since 1990 Vision House
has successfully provided
transitional housing, support
services and child care for
homeless mothers and their
children and separately to
homeless men recovering from
drug and alcohol addiction.
What our families have been through:
How you help change lives:
“I was in a very abusive relationship – physically,
mentally, sexually, emotionally and verbally for
close to 5 years. I stayed with my abuser despite
pleas from friends, family and my children to
leave him. My children were scared and tired of
seeing me black and blue and always depressed.
One morning I knew I had enough. We escaped
that day.”
“When I walked into the Vision House courtyard,
I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. My
children were in awe. I knew instantly that
Vision House was where we needed to be in
order to get our loving family back to the way it
was before the abuse tore it apart.”
“I never felt I was the ‘type’ to be homeless, but
after 9/11 I was without a job, no way to pay my
rent and I was scared. The worst happened
when I lost my apartment. I truly felt like a bad
mom. I was depressed and embarrassed.”
“My family was normal, so I thought. My dad
abused drugs and alcohol and beat my mom.
I stood up for her by calling the police. Before
I left home at age 15, he had gone to jail three
times. I had no healthy role models, so I began
living a rebellious life. I had my first child at age
16 and my second at 20. Suicide felt like a real
option on more than one occasion.”
“The people at Vision House are friendly and
welcoming. Every day I feel my burdens lifting
off my shoulders.”
“Vision House isn’t a place to get a handout, but
a place where you’re challenged to develop your
God-given talents and address issues that are
preventing you from reaching your goals. I had
the opportunity to make changes, better choices
and a difference in my family’s future.”
“Thank you Vision House – for all the basics like
shelter, counseling, child care, resources and
accountability. And a big thank you in helping
me gain confidence and become the person that
I was always meant to be.”
Mission Statement
To follow our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in
working with the poor and homeless to promote
positive transformation of their lives.
Board of Directors
Dear Friends,
What an exciting year 2011 turned out to be! While we experienced many challenges, there was also
an abundance of blessings along the way. Many individuals, businesses, churches and foundations
partnered with us to provide homeless families a safe place to live at Vision House and to provide
food, clothing, counseling, job training and the opportunity to build a path of hope into the future.
Our 2011 accomplishments:
1. Provided housing and support services for 119 homeless individuals:
36 mothers, 69 children and 14 men.
2. Achieved 93% success rate in the family program; 43% in the men’s drug
and alcohol recovery program.
3. Provided child care and early childhood education in our licensed child care center for 133 children, including resident children, alumni children and community children.
4. Received NAC accreditation for our child care center (National Accreditation Commission
for Early Care and Education Programs).
5. Acquired a Thrift Store in Bothell from Bellevue Christian School in order to increase revenue to support our Vision House families.
6. Continued Jacob’s Well expansion project in Shoreline: Hundreds of volunteers alongside professionals helped us frame, roof, install windows and begin placement of siding on the complex for homeless mothers and children.
7. Doubled our volunteer hours to nearly 23,000 hours valued at more than $492,000.
Even with all of these amazing achievements, there are still many people in need in our community.
We have more than 50 families on our waiting list and receive over 2,000 calls a year from people in
desperate situations asking for help.
With your support, we will continue reaching out and serving the hurting and homeless. Thank you
for your deep sense of compassion for homeless children in our community.
God bless,

Fundraising
Volunteers are essential in
helping us achieve our mission. In 2011,
volunteer hours doubled for the third year
in a row to nearly 23,000 hours valued at
more than $492,000!
Our Vision House champions help with
our family and children’s activities, special
events, donation sorting, office work,
landscaping and maintenance, construction,
Bargain Bash garage sale, thrift store, or
wherever there is a need. Volunteers allow
us to trim expenses and use resources
wisely, thereby freeing up dollars to provide
high quality, life-changing services for the
families in our care.
Expansion Projects
Vision House Jacob’s Well
Thanks to hundreds of volunteers and
professional builders, our expansion project in
Shoreline made great strides in 2011. The first
of the two buildings was framed, the windows
and exterior doors installed, and the rough-in
plumbing completed. By the end of the year, we
began installing the siding, as well as the heating
and fire sprinkler system.
We build our facilities debt-free, on a pay-asyou-go model, so we’re incredibly grateful to
the many churches, businesses, foundations,
community groups and individuals who have
raised funds to get us this far.
Upon completion, Vision House Jacob’s Well
will provide a home and support services for 20
homeless families. Modeled after our successful
Vision House program in Renton that serves 23
families, Jacob’s Well will include a licensed child
care center as well as a crisis center and a space
for programs.
New Vision House
Thrift Store
In August 2011, Vision House was gifted a thrift
store in Bothell from Bellevue Christian School.
The new Vision House Thrift Store gives us an
excellent opportunity to provide quality, low-cost
clothing and household items to the community,
a way for people to help homeless kids by
donating their gently-used belongings, and
creates an income stream to support the families
in our care.
More than 50 volunteers cleared out old
merchandise, did minor remodeling and
restocked the store with new merchandise.
In 2012, a volunteer design team will be
redesigning the store to increase traffic flow,
improve aesthetics and lighting, and to create
a more functional workroom.
“At Vision House my kids feel safe. They trust me
again and tell me how proud they are of me.“
“Vision House is a family, a support group.
Loving people taught me how to set goals and
make good decisions. They helped me find my
self esteem.”
“My girls truly have been blessed by their
Vision House experience. My oldest daughter
struggled in school, but now is doing great. The
tutoring services offered by Vision House helped
a great deal.”
Vision House Donors 2011
We are grateful to the businesses, churches, organizations and foundations that
supported Vision House in 2011 through financial contributions, volunteering and in-kind gifts.
