Fishing Unit FISH BUCKS: Lobstering!! Information for Teachers: Skills to develop- basic computational skills with decimals, solving word problems with multiple steps. Pick different numbers and you can do this activity over multiple days. Results will be similar, but different over time. This long term unit provides an opportunity to gain an appreciation for the changes of prices as they relate to the overall profit or loss. Making subtle changes with this finite number of variables enables the student to make comparisons based on a profit history, then make predictions and estimate the profit/ loss given a new data set. Benchmark Prices: Bait can cost between $5 - 30 per tote. Mr. Woodin usually buys 2 totes when it’s cheap, 1 when more expensive. Gas is just normal gas from a gas station. Currently about $3.05 per gallon. Lobsters sell for $4.00 -8.00 per pound based on demand and availability. He uses 1-2 totes of bait per day, about 5 gallons of gas, and catches between 15-50 pounds of lobster. Fishing Unit FISH BUCKS: Lobstering!! The prices fluctuate on a daily basis. In addition, certain types of fish are not caught /landed on certain days. In this instance, students who chose to catch some of those fish will get paid nothing! That’s why they call it “fishing” instead of “catching”! How to play: Today’s 200 Pound Catch First, each student should allocate his catch. He should divide his 200 pounds of fish into four types of fish. He does this by selecting a number of fish boxes to hold each fish type. Using the following page as an example, notice that three 20 pound boxes are selected for Wolf Fish- so there are “W’s” written on three boxes. The student chose to divide his remaining 140 pounds in the following manner; Haddock: 2 boxes, Cod:1 box, and Flounder: 4 boxes. Students should calculate the number of pounds that have been selected of each type. At this point, the teacher should supply the daily catch report , or read the values for each type. Students should then multiply the weight of each fish type by the price provided. The best fisherman is decided by the person who gets the largest sum of money.
