Answer: During your final semester of study at NYUCN. There is a two part application process (described below). 2. If I want to be licensed in more than one state, do I need to take the NCLEX‐RN examination in each state? Answer: No, the same NCLEX‐RN examination is administered nationally. How is the exam administered? Answer: The NCLEX‐RN Exam is administered on a proctored computer at an approved testing site at a location that you select once you are approved to take the test. 4. Do I need to take the NCLEX‐RN Exam in the state in which I wish to be licensed? Answer: No, as long as you have submitted an application to the State Board of Nursing in which you wish to be licensed, you may select any approved testing site location to take the exam. 5. How much does it cost to take the exam? Answer: There is an application fee payable to the appropriate State Board of Nursing (the NY State Board of Nursing fee is currently $143.00) as well as a fee to Pearson VUE (currently $200.00). 6. How and when will my degree requirements be verified by NYU College of Nursing? Answer: Once the final grades and your degree are posted at the University level, the Assistant Registrar will send the complete/total list of graduates to the New York State Board of Nursing (or your final transcript‐‐ with the official date of the degree awarded‐‐ to the individual non‐NY State Board[s]). The Assistant Registrar notifies students by NYU email that the eligibility list (or transcript) has been mailed to the Board(s) of Nursing. Typically, it can take up to six weeks after graduation to send this list. 7. Do I need to complete a separate course in child abuse identification and reporting to be licensed in NY? Answer: No. Graduates of New York State registered nursing programs after September 1, 1990 complete this coursework in their nursing program and are not required to submit additional proof. 8. Do I need to complete a separate course in infection control and barrier precautions to be licensed in NY? Answer: No. Graduates from New York State nursing programs after September 1, 1993 are credited with having completed this coursework as part of their nursing program. However, you must complete course work or training regarding infection control and barrier precautions, 2 including engineering and work controls to prevent the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis b virus (HBV) in the course of professional practice, every four years. You must attest to having completed this requirement to the State Education Department on your first licensure/registration application and at every subsequent registration. The Process from Start to Finish There are two major players that are involved in scheduling the NCLEX exam. Each is equally important and they work in unison with each other. The two major players are: 1. The State Board of Nursing (in the state in which you wish to be licensed)  If you are registering in the state of New York, the “expedited” application form you need (Nurse Form 1NYS) is found on the link provided below : “NYS Approved Nursing Graduates”  If you wish to be licensed in a state other than New York, check the website for the Board of Nursing in that state for directions. 2. Pearson VUE  This is the company that administers the NCLEX exam. The link to this site is indicated below. Follow these Steps of the Process: 1. Submit an application for licensure to the Board of Nursing in the state in which you wish to be licensed. It is best to do this at the beginning of the final semester of study at NYUCN. A fee will be charged to submit the application. NY State RN Licensure: If you wish to be licensed in the state of New York, click the “NYS Approved Nursing Program Graduates” link to get the required application form (Nurse Form 1NYS). This is an “expedited” form sent directly to NYUCN and is for NYS Approved Nursing Program Graduates. This form is not available on the NY State Board of Nursing website. Do not use the “regular” form on the NY State Board website. Her email is mer1@nyu.edu 2. Register for the NCLEX examination with Pearson VUE. Person VUE is the company that administers the NCLEX Exam at all locations in the United States. The cost for the exam is noted on the website. The application will also prompt you to select the State in which you wish to be licensed. Detailed information is available on the Pearson Vue website, including the NCLEX Examination Candidate Bulletin, at the following link: http://www.pearsonvue.com/nclex PLEASE NOTE: We recommend that you use your Social Security Number (even though Person VUE indicates that this is optional) because not including a SSN significantly delays testing approval. If needed, the Request for Reasonable Testing Accommodations form can be downloaded at: http://www.op.nysed.gov/documents/pls1ra.pdf Once you register with Pearson VUE, an electronic file is established for you. Pearson Vue will be notified by your State Board of Nursing when your application for licensure in that state has been received, and you are eligible to take the NCLEX exam. As with the State Board of Nursing application process, you can register with Pearson Vue at any time during your final semester of study. After you register with Pearson Vue, you will receive an “Acknowledgement of Receipt of Registration” by email (or USPS mail). Eligibility to take the exam. Once the final grades and your degree are posted at the University level, the Assistant Registrar will send the complete/total list of graduates to the New York State Board of Nursing (or your final transcript‐‐ with the official date of the degree awarded‐‐ to the individual State Board[s]). The Assistant Registrar notifies students by email that the eligibility list (or transcript) has been mailed to the Board(s). Typically, it can take up to six weeks after graduation to send this list. 3. Once the Board of Nursing clears you to register, you will then be eligible to take the exam. The Board of Nursing communicates this eligibility with Pearson VUE to inform them you are eligible to take the exam. Pearson VUE then sends you an “Authorization to Test (ATT)” by email (or USPS mail). 4. Schedule your NCLEX exam at a time and a location through the Pearson VUE site. There are testing centers located all around the country. 4 5. Leave early and arrive at the testing site at least 15 minutes before the exam begins. Relax. Take exam. 6. Applying for a Limited Permit. In many states, a limited permit authorizes practice as a nurse under the immediate and personal supervision of a licensed, currently registered, registered professional nurse and with the endorsement of the employer before you have taken and passed the NCLEX exam. You should be certain that you are ready to begin practice when you apply for the limited permit. You may apply for a limited permit in New York State either at the same time, or after submitting an application to the NYS Board of Nursing for licensure (Nurse Form 1NYS). There is a $35.00 fee. Please refer to the website of the state(s) in which you wish to practice for information about their limited permit requirements.
