2010 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients Wesley Fong received a BA in political science from UH Mānoa in 1965. Formerly a supervising deputy attorney general for the state of Hawai‘i and a supervising deputy corporation counsel for the city of Honolulu, he now teaches law at the UH School of Travel Industry Management and is a prominent community leader. A decorated Vietnam veteran, he retired as a colonel in the U.S. Army after serving 30 years. David Lassner received his PhD in communication and information sciences from UH Mānoa in 1998. Currently vice president for information technology and chief information officer for the UH System, Lassner has worked at UH since 1977 in a variety of technical and management positions that have culminated with creating and leading UH’s first integrated system-wide information technology support organization. Ashok Kumar Malhotra earned his PhD in philosophy from UH Mānoa in 1969. He began teaching at SUNY Oneonta, where he is a founding member of its philosophy department and currently serves as distinguished teaching professor. He was nominated for the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize for his mission to spread literacy by building five schools for the underprivileged children of India. Virginia Pressler earned an MBA from UH Mānoa in 1975, then decided to pursue a medical career in hopes of making a bigger impact on the community. She earned an MS in physiology in 1981 and an MD in 1982 from the UH Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine. She is now executive vice president and chief strategic officer for Hawai‘i Pacific Health. Dr. M.R.C. In 1968 she was elected to the state house of representatives, where she served until being elected to the state senate in 1974. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987-91. President George H. W. Bush appointed her administrator of the Small Business Administration from 1991-93.
