Have you seen the FedEx Kinko’s commercial where a group is gathered
around a conference table as the manager discusses recycling paper within
the company? Actually, they aren’t recycling, they are just printing on the
backsides of other documents. A young lady with a puzzled expression asks
as she looks at her “recycled” paper, “What is a CEO Compensation
Package”? Horrified, the manager lands a belly flop on the conference table
attempting to snatch the paper out of her hand, and ultimately devours the
document. During a recent ASID trip to visit the El Paso Design
Community, I discovered a very detailed “CEO Compensation Package”
document in my seat pocket. I took it home, called the company, spoke with
the CEO and related the story. He asked that I send him the docs which I did, with a little handwritten
note, and one of my business cards, complete with the newly branded ASID logo. Several days later I
received a lovely floral bouquet and note thanking me for “doing the right thing.”
The ASID Texas Chapter is rich with folks who do the right thing. I just spent a Friday with many of
them. Your Texas Chapter Board and Design Community leaders are people of character. They willingly volunteer their time, talents, and energy as they guide and encourage our membership. Please
visit our newly redesigned and branded ASID Texas Chapter website at www.asidtx.org, to find our
leadership and let them know how much you appreciate their service to you and ASID. I wonder when
it will be your turn to serve. I know you are probably asking, “Why in the world would I want to do
that?” or “I’m just too busy”. We are all busy. Our board consists of spouses, parents, small business
owners, all of whom wear many hats. You could begin at the local level in leadership, and then serve at
the state level if you so desire. As to the “why”, I have been stretched well beyond my comfort zone in
beneficial ways through my 6 years in ASID leadership. Travel, speaking to groups, writing articles,
attending ASID national events, making friends all over the state and country, learning to work with
others from all backgrounds, seeing others grow, serving YOU the members, are the tip of the iceberg in
benefits to me personally and professionally. Please get involved with ASID for your benefit, and the
longevity of our organization.
Longevity used to describe my relationship with a certain unnamed bank. Recently, I felt I was unfairly
treated and marched into the bank to let them know! I tried every negotiating tactic my husband had
taught me, told them 26 years qualified me as a longtime customer, that I had never abused my relationship with them, and was asking a very small courtesy on their part. Nothin doin! No compassion, no
understanding, no explanation, and absolutely no gratitude for my many years supporting them. In
disgust, I stood up, asked to permanently close my account, and was summarily dismissed with the
comment, “We have no paperwork. Your account is closed. Bye.” I slowly exited the lobby, tears flowing
but not where they could see, and drove to one of our state owned banks, that did not take a bailout, and
was treated like a queen! Clearly, I contrasted my “member benefits” from each bank and made my
decision.
ASID Texas Chapter leadership is often asked, “How does ASID benefit me?” Well first, we don’t want
you leaving ASID in tears! And there is no reason to do so if you are aware of your member benefits.
They are like a gym membership in that your dues pay for many activities whether you use them or not.
Because ASID is comprised of practitioners, students, industry partners, and educators, we must serve
all members equally. You may not care for yoga, or use the gym day care, but love the ellipse machine at
the gym. Same principle applies to ASID. We receive our Strategic Plan from ASID in Washington, and
then your Texas Chapter board decides what we can physically and financially implement here in
Texas for our membership. There are programs, competitions, awards, etc., for all categories. Again,
please visit www.asidtx.org to find a comprehensive list of all your benefits as a member, and take
advantage of them. Here are few to include on your calendar:
1) Metrocon 2012 – the largest design tradeshow in the Southwest! You can take as many CEUs as
you’d like in 2 days, AND see all the latest product and technology related to our industry. August 9,

METROCON12 Expo & Conference
Better than Ever...
By Rosemarie René, ASID, RID
METROCON12 Presiding Chair
METROCON12 – the largest
regional expo and conference in the
USA is once again developing to be
the best show in the Southwest. The
two-day event will take place at
Dallas Market Hall [2200 Stemmons
Freeway, Dallas] on Thursday,
August 9 & Friday, August 10, 2012.
This year marks the eighth year that
the Texas Chapter of ASID again
joined the Texas / Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA [International Interior
Design Association] in their volunteer alliance to bring cutting edge
industry information to their collective membership. METROCON will
again be held in conjunction with the ASID Texas Chapter’s Legacy of
Design Awards Celebration / Annual Meeting, which will take place the
evening of Wednesday, August 8.
Through the continued support of the 2011 Sponsors, innovative exhibitors
and over 1,300 loyal attendees, the METROCON11 Committee of volunteers was pleased to distribute $40,000.00 to each organization. This
income will serve as funds needed for educational programs, student activities, scholarships and events designated by each association.
Please visit our refreshed website, which the METROCON Committee is
very proud to continue advancing: www.metrocon.info. Use this official
website as your resource for all conference information, daily schedules,
continuing education classes, travel information, directions, exhibitor
information, and sponsorship opportunities.
SPONSORING
Speaking of great opportunities to expand recognition: Sponsorship,
Sponsorships and more Sponsorships! On January 25th the annual
Sponsorship Soirée was held at Royal Sixty located in The International on
Turtle Creek. Proprietress Wendy Krispin welcomed everyone with horsd’oeuvres for all of our past METROCON Sponsors, as well as those interested in a sponsorship for the 2012 show. By the end of the evening 32 of
the 42 sponsorships were purchased.
Steve Patterson, ASID Industry Partner Representative, RID again is the
Sponsorship Liaison. He continues to work hard on behalf of our
exhibitors and sponsors to provide the best possible experience and to
keep them updated on the benefits of both exhibiting and sponsoring.
Businesses throughout the design industry have an expanded array of
options to support METROCON12, gaining valuable exposure with its
targeted audience. Some of those sponsorship opportunities are as
follows…
• Early move-in privileges for all sponsors
• Logo recognition on METROCON website sponsor page
• Specific recognition on show signage
• Sponsor recognition in their individual booths
• Sponsor recognition in METROCON on-site Directory
• Recognition in the footer of every official METROCON email mass
communication after April 1, 2012

If you cater to interior designers, METROCON12 is the place to be. Visit
our Sponsorship page at www.metrocon.info to find the list of this year’s
sponsors, remaining sponsorship opportunities, and tradeshow floor plan.
For further information about sponsorship opportunities, please contact
Steve Patterson: 214-755-9186 | sponsor@metrocon.info
Attention current ASID TX Industry Partners – Please note that
METROCON sponsorships are optional and completely independent of
your annual ASID Industry Partner dues.
EXHIBITING
One prominent benefit of ASID Industry Partner membership is reduced
convention pricing. Exhibitor registration opens April 2, at which time a
10’x10’ booth can be purchased for the reduced fee of $475. Green Zone
booth upgrades are available at $100 per booth (while available), Premium
booth upgrades are available at $150 per booth (while available) and Super
Premium upgrades at $250 per booth (while available). Please note that
booth sales officially close on June 22. Visit our Exhibitors page at
www.metrocon.info to find more information to purchase your booths.
A note to the Industry Partners out there who offer residential products
and services: Residentially-focused designers want you there! Every year
they ask why more of you are not present – especially those from beyond
the DFW area who want to do some “one-stop shopping” while they are in
the Metroplex. Think about it: There is a “Wow Factor” when you run
across something new and unexpected at a tradeshow. Our members are
always looking for new sources, and when you are not there along with
other vendors, you are not on their radar. Understand that a great deal of
residentially-focused designers attend METROCON every year, and they
desperately want you to participate, so plan on being at the 2012 show!
ATTENDING
For attendees, ASID & IIDA is again offering its members* affordable,
quality continuing education. Any member of the two organizations can
attend the two-day tradeshow free of charge with only a $50 flat fee to take
any amount of continuing education. Again this year the tradeshow and
continuing education registration is online at www.metrocon.info.
Continuing education courses will be filled on a first come, first served
basis, so sign up quickly. Online pre-registration will open June 1 at 8am
and will close at 6pm on July 27. On-site registration for the tradeshow
will, of course, be available during METROCON12. An additional charge of
$10.00 will apply to on-site registration. Note: If classes sell out online
during pre-registration, class openings may be available on-site due to
registrant no-shows, but they cannot be guaranteed.
*IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MEMBERSHIP:
To qualify as a Member and receive discounted tradeshow and/or continuing
education pricing, Attendees must be in good standing - i.e., not suspended for
non-payment - in the official ASID database or in the official IIDA database
ON MAY 1, 2012. If not in either one of these official databases on this date,
then the Attendee will not qualify as a Member and will need to pay the nonmember pricing.
PLAN ON IT
Whether you are an Industry Partner, designer, educator or student, please
join us at METROCON12 - the event of the year. We look forward at
greeting you on August 9 and 10!
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE cont. from page 4

Happy Spring!

What is the ASID Foundation?
Do you know the difference between ASID and the ASID Foundation?
Your membership dues provide ASID programs such as education, marketing, the right to
practice and more. The ASID Foundation supports endeavors that further knowledge,
innovation, and benefits to the public through interior design. This is done through
funding research, scholarships, and education.
The ASID Foundation has been a major supporter of:
• Scholarships
• Evidence-Based Design for Residential Environments
• Materials Research Collaborative, a project of the Healthy Building Network
• Veteran’s Housing Initiative of Rebuilding Together
• REGREEN, in collaboration with the US Green Building Council Council for Interior
Design Accreditation’s Future Vision and Collaborative Strategies
• The Green House – exhibit at the National Building Museum
These projects would not have happened without your support of the Foundation. New
research is continuously available and your dollars make this happen.
How to donate? Most of our donations come from members who donate annually or
pledge over several years. Another way is through the Legacy Society – giving through
your will.

Fiser brings to ASID an extensive background in leading
organizational transformation in corporate, not-for-profit,
and professional services industries. His innovative leadership expertise includes leading staff, boards, executives,

of design as it transformed the lives of the residents of New
Orleans following Hurricane Katrina," said Fiser. "I am
pleased to lead ASID in its quest to raise awareness of the
power of design to transform the human experience in all
types of spaces."

Wilson Associates 15th Annual
Point of Excellence Awards
Luncheon Raises Funds to
Benefit the Wilson Foundation
Wilson Associates, a global hospitality interior architectural design firm,
held its fifteenth annual Point of Excellence Awards Luncheon at The RitzCarlton in Dallas, Texas on Friday, Nov. 18.
Wilson Associates hosts a Point of Excellence Awards Luncheon annually
that recognizes excellence in the design industry, honoring vendors and
service providers who repeatedly go above and beyond to better serve their
clients. This year, more than two hundred and fifty people attended the
luncheon, which honored Chip Norton of Norton Enterprises N.A. LLC and
Ron McDaniel of Townsend Leather.
All proceeds from the Point of Excellence Awards Luncheon benefit The
Wilson Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1997 by
Wilson Associates President & CEO, Trisha Wilson. The Wilson Foundation’s
mission is to “make a difference one child at a time,” providing financial
support for education, healthcare and community outreach programs. While
the foundation supports domestic education programs, a majority of the funds
help support nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in rural South Africa,
specifically Limpopo Province, which suffers from high unemployment
and an HIV/AIDS pandemic that has left many orphans in its wake.

Tamie Glass wins 2011 ASID Educator Design
Excellence Award
The University of Texas at Austin Interior Design
Program is proud to announce Assistant Professor
Tamie Glass, Allied ASID, was recently chosen as a
recipient of the 2011 ASID Educator Design Excellence
Award for her work on the Mountain Villa Residence—a
project involving an extensive remodel of a 1980s residence (pictured below) originally designed by former
University of
Texas School
of Architecture dean Alan
Taniguchi. The extensive interior
and exterior renovation sought
to enhance the existing structure's strong formal language
while renewing the spirit of the
house for a more contemporary
lifestyle that reflects today's
values. The material palate and
interior detailing was dramatically improved, featuring a
leather wrapped staircase,
leather tiles, cabinets of Wenge,
Jacoba, and rift sawn oak, basalt
tile, fire slate countertops and
beautiful fixtures and appliances.
ASID recognizes the significant contribution of educators in interior
design and this peer reviewed, juried competition honors interior design
work at a national level. A total of five projects were awarded with only
three receiving this highest honor. In addition, Glass also received the 2011
Dream Home Silver Design Award for her work on the Mountain Villa
Residence, and six 2011 American Society of Interior Designers [ASID]
Texas Chapter Legacy of Design Awards: 1st place in the Contemporary
Residential Kitchen, Contemporary Residence–Large, Contemporary
Residential Bathroom, and Product Design categories;
and 2nd place in the Contemporary Residential Bathroom and Product
Design categories.
Congratulations to…
Kimberly Shapiro, Allied ASID has recently relocated from St. Louis to
the DFW area. Her professional industry experience includes residential, hospitality, healthcare and corporate, and she is acting liaison
between Dallas ASID members and Stacy’s industry partnership at their
beautiful new showroom (previously Robb & Stucky). Please contact her

launch of her business. This accolade further distinguishes Jaffe, one consecutive year after taking home the first place Rising Star Design Excellence
Award in the Product Design/Special Detail/Custom Original Piece category
from the same organization in 2010.
Jaffe’s recent award-winning space is a living room that needed a transitional and sophisticated lift. She achieved this by working closely with the
homeowner to incorporate existing pieces in the home and adding new
elements that worked harmoniously together with hints of earth, sea and
wildlife. Other considerations in the room were comfort, stylish function
(storage) and natural, yet noticeable, color. The winning work included a
Herez Persian rug from Kaskas Oriental Rugs (Austin), a piece from Tomlinson
and a Lee Industries sofa.
For Jaffe, who earned her first undergraduate degree in neuropsychology, this award is significant. It validates her newfound career. “As a young
designer with a new business, I am honored to receive this award. This award
helps solidify the career path that I always say chose me,” said Jaffe. After
receiving her first degree, Jaffe worked as a receptionist in an architecture
firm and then at a contract furniture group, where she discovered a passion
for the interior design field, which she describes as “a grand culmination of

art and science”. Shortly after this revelation, she pursued a degree in interior design, graduating from Texas State University-San Marcos Magna Cum
Laude. Jaffe then passed the qualifying exam to become a registered interior designer in Texas in 2009, launching her own firm six months later.
Jaffe is proud of her 2011 award, but considers it simply the beginning of
her design achievements. “I am excited to have won an award each year that
I have been in business so far, and hope I can continue this success,” she said.
To celebrate her win and thank the community for its support as her design
firm continues to grow, Jaffe is offering a 20% discount on three hours of
consultation time for new clients who initiate qualifying projects in January
and February of 2012. Those interested in setting up an introductory call to
discuss their home design needs should contact Jaffe at allisonjaffe@me.com

GLASS RECYCLED Unveils New Designer Showcase
GLASS RECYCLED announces the unveiling of their new ‘Designer
Showcase’ – an exclusive web-based portal where the design community can
create and order totally custom samples of the company’s various ecologically-friendly commercial and residential building products.
GLASS RECYCLED is a Texas-based company that creates stunning kitchen
countertops, bathroom vanities, flooring and a number of other hard-surface
finishes for both commercial and residential applications using their patented
process of using crushed recycled glass and porcelain products. Unlike granite,
marble or tile – which come from material mined from the earth and are available in only a few color selections, GLASS RECYCLED products are custom
made for each project and can be formulated in an infinite number of color
combinations. The company website already showcases hundreds of
sample choices, but the new Designer Showcase – a feature offered exclusively by GLASS RECYCLED – gives homeowners, remodelers and professional designers the ability to custom create virtually anything their mind can
imagine.
According to company president Tim Whaley – who invented and patented
the company’s manufacturing process, “We have a wide variety of glass, porcelain, mirror and mother of pearl colors – all crushed into a number of standard chip sizes. Clients can select from any combination of color and size, and
then we mix it with a custom epoxy to match virtually any paint color offered
by Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore paint companies. Since the final

UltraMedia is a team of dedicated technology experts, each with 15-25

one or both of Pat Johnson’s two other successful AV companies.
UltraMedia’s President, Pat Johnson, said, “We are a cohesive team,
expecting as much of one another as we do ourselves. Home technology is
our career—not a stepping stone to another position at another company.”
We’ve seen a lot of growth and change in the industry over the years. We
remember when HD was just a rumor, and 3D was seen only in special
theaters. Telephones were just that—and controlling home technology
from an iPhone wasn’t possible. We’ve kept up with changes with much
training, and hands-on experimentation in our office showroom.
From hanging a television, to a high-end audiophile dream installation, we
appreciate each client, and would like to thank the wonderful designers
we’ve had the opportunity to work with over the years. Without our
clients, large and small, we wouldn’t have the opportunity to celebrate ten

choices are limitless, and our new Designer Showcase gives the opportunity

GLASS RECYCLED products are as durable as granite but are heat and
scratch resistant, do not require a seal and do not emit any potentially toxic
volatile organic compounds. They can be can be made to any specified size
and shape for kitchen countertops, bathroom, utility room, game room bar
and more. Installation is easy and can be performed by anyone familiar with
traditional granite or tile installations.
GLASS RECYCLED applications will provide additional USGBC LEED®
points, and the average GLASS RECYCLED kitchen countertop ‘upcycles’
750 discarded glass bottles and jars – giving them new life and helping the
environment at the same time. Considering it takes 100 million years for them
to totally decompose, the stress-relief on landfills is just another great reason
to use this stunning material in any residential or commercial design project.

Dianne Etheredge is the past president for the Texas Chapter of ASID.
In the previous issue's feature "Focus On The Face of The Chapter" and
Operation Bring Eddie, San Antonio designer Misty Skelly – The Interior
Edge, was inadvertently omitted from the Donor List. Misty ordered/
installed the Hunter Douglas window coverings, and donated a beautiful
cross sculpture. Thank you Misty!

STUDENT NEWS
News from the University of Texas at Austin
UT Austin Interior Design Professor
Releases Two New Books
Lois Weinthal, Associate Professor and Graduate Advisor for the Master
of Interior Design Program at The University of Texas at Austin is pleased
to announce the release of two new book titles, Toward a New Interior:
An Anthology of Interior Design Theory (Weinthal, editor) and After Taste:
Expanded Practices in Interior Design (Kleinman, Merwood-Salisbury,
and Weinthal, co-editors), both published by Princeton Architectural
Press.
In Toward a New Interior, Weinthal frames the interior in a range of
scales, from the clothing we wear to the city we inhabit. Between these
scales is an array of layers that can be pulled apart and further investigated, often revealing an identity by which we surround ourselves. Essays
are organized into eight chapters, cutting across a range of disciplines and
eras. After Taste is an edited volume comprising texts, interviews and
portfolios that collectively document new theories and emerging critical practices in the field of interior design. After Taste also offers expansive views of interior studies, highlights important emerging areas of
research, identifies allied practices, and makes public its under-explored
territory.
Lois Weinthal is an Associate Professor and has been teaching Interior
Design in the School of Architecture since 1999. Her practice, Weinthal
Works, focuses on the relationships between architecture, interiors, clothing
and objects, resulting in works that take on an experimental nature.
