Tony Tinker Accountancy Department Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College City University of New York Syllabus, Readings and assignments for Accounting 2101 Introductory Accounting (Last update: 6/25/2011) COURSE MATERIALS AND RESOURCES There is no REQUIRED textbook for this book. The recommended text is FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING, Spiceland, Thomas and Herrman, First Edition, McGraw Hill. ISBN 978-0-07-337933-3. Most accounting books (including the older owns) still follow the same format, so you can use older editions, second hand copies, or copies that you share with you friends. YOU MUST BUY ACCESS TO CONNECT (to complete the assigned online homework) (around $35). Online homework is a big part of this course. Newspapers (most below are now free on-line) New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/ Wall Street Journal: http://www.collegejournal.com/ Guardian Unlimited: http://www.guardian.co.uk/ Financial Times: http://news.ft.com/home/us Newsletters: Smart pros http://finance.pro2net.com/ (covers corporate governance issues mainly, offers email alerts) COURSE CONTENT: Overview of Course Content and Description 1) Introduce the concepts and principles underlying financial reporting; 2) Interpret and apply accounting information in business decisions; 3) Understand the procedures and techniques needed to prepare a complete set of financial statements; 4) Improve communication and online skills that are essential for success in business today. The computer skills include reasonable knowledge in Excel, utilizing the Internet to gather financial information, and effective use of Blackboard. Students are required to complete homework assignments using McGraw Hill's CONNECT, a specially designed software. Students MUST acquire a code in order to be able to access and complete the assigned problems and project online. This access code is provided as part of the packaged course materials which can be purchased through the bookstore. Grading CONNECT -- online homework 50 Final Exam (not departmental) 40 Class Participation and Attendance 10 Extra Credit Assignments (to be decided) Typically a minimum of 3 extra credit assignments are given, earning 5 points maximum. Extra credit grades are not added to your homework and final exam grade, they are only used to 'lift' you to a new grade level if you are on the margin, or to 'rescue' students who have done disastrously on the final or the homework. Exams, Quizzes and Homework Assignments There is no midterm or quizzes. Grades are determined by the CONNECT homework the final, and Extra Credit Assignments. These will be decided during the course. This course DOES NOT apply the College curve. The deadlines for the on-line homework are absolute. They cannot be extended once they are set. No partial credit is given. At the end of the course, your on-line homework grades will be summed-up, and that number, taken as a proportion of the total possible marks. How to access Blackboard Blackboard’s web address is: (To be assigned). Your user ID is your CUNY web mail address. Your password is the PIN number you use to register for your classes. Academic Honesty Everything you submit in this course must be your own work. Copying material exactly or very closely from any source without using quotation marks and citing your source is plagiarism and will result in an automatic zero for that assignment. Below is CUNYs description of prohibited behavior: BARUCH NOW EMPLOYS SOFTWARE FOR DETECTING PLAGIARISM. "Plagiarism is the act of presenting another person’s ideas, research or writings as your own. The following are some examples of plagiarism, but by no means is it an exhaustive list: copying another person’s actual words without the use of quotation marks and citations, presenting another’s ideas or theories in your own words without acknowledging the source, using information that is not common knowledge without acknowledging the source, failing to acknowledge collaborators on homework assignments. Internet plagiarism includes purchasing or downloading term papers online, paraphrasing or copying information from the Internet without citing the source, and cutting and pasting from various sources without proper attribution".
