Première Vision New York moved to a larger show venue this season in order to accommodate increased offerings, which
included 30 leather suppliers and 26 apparel manufacturers, showing at Premiere Vision New York for the first time, and
coming from Europe, Asia and South America.
Handbag designer Odile Berard, of Marie Odile for Soltek, was excited about the new leather area. “There was great selection,
with a broad range of color; an interest of ours for next spring. There were oranges, blues and greens…a really beautiful
selection. I’m also looking in the accessories area for tasteful solutions to placing logos on the bag exteriors.”
“My collection is all about creating beautiful, quality clothes,” says Clark Sabbat, designer of his eponymous, bespoke collection
for women, as well as for new label Mohyur. “I’m here to find texture, fabrics with interest that we can layer. I can’t compete
with fast-fashion retailers, so I can focus on creating high quality pieces…and I find the best products here at Première Vision.”
“Our collection is all about building wardrobes for our
customer,” says Patrick Sleem, designer of women’s
collection Etcetera. “Everything needs to work together.
I’m here to shop for novelty¬–finishing up for holiday–and
am starting to populate color stories for Spring/Summer
2017. Also a soft, pastel story like the architecture and
automobiles of Havana…and that’s what’s great about
this show–I can come here looking for unexpected
surprises.”
Première Vision’s Deputy Fashion Director Sabine
Le Chatelier presented Trend Tasting seminars, PV’s
forecasts for color and product highlights for the Spring/
Summer 17 season, as just part of a complete program,
demonstrating the fashion and business leadership the
industry has grown to expect from PVNY. A Tuesday
evening roundtable focused on “Urban Manufacturing for
the 21st Century,” was emceed by Manufacture New York’s Bob Bland, and covered the advantages of locally-sourced, smallerscale manufacturing, married with technology and sustainability practices, setting a pattern for future fashion industry TK and
employment. The panel also included Hannah Milman, Executive Director of the Martha Stewart American Made program;
Steven Capozzola, Communications Director for menswear brand Ralph & Remington, as well as former media consultant
for the the Alliance for American Manufacturing U.S. Business and Industry Council; Amanda Parkes, PhD, Manufacture New
York’s Chief of Technology and Research; and Daniel Silverstein, a New York-based clothing designer and expert on zero-waste
manufacturing and sustainability. A festive post-show cocktail party was held in the Bistro Designs Café on Tuesday evening.
Menswear designer David Hart has been enjoying his experience as Première Vision brand ambassador. “This is the most
elevated fabric show,” said Hart. “The best people are here from Italy, France, Turkey, the U.K. and more. I’ve been able, not
only to find fabrics, trims and materials that I love, but also companies that are willing to work with an emerging designer such
as myself on minimums.”
An exciting exhibition celebrating the crossover between
the worlds of denim and haute couture was brought to
the U.S. from the last Paris edition of Première Vision.
With concepts designed and realized by Atelier JeanPierre Ollier, the exhibit was an inspiration to visitors and
exhibitors alike.
Exhibitors were enthusiastic about the newly expanded
space and opportunities.
“It’s been a good show, in general,” says Larimode’s
Meriem Larini, a manufacturer showing at PVNY for
the first time. “This gave us good insight into the U.S.
market. We’re from Morocco and a lot of designers don’t
even know what Morocco has to offer. We’re excited to
be opening this market.”
Tannerie Remy Carriat was one of the new leather brands showing. “It was a good show, especially since it was a new one for
leather,” says Marie Hiriart Carriat. “We worked with more handbag and shoe designers here. Water buffalo and nubuck hides
were particularly popular, and our customers love color. We’re looking forward to the July, Fall/Winter show, where leather is
even more important.”
“This was an awesome show,” say Keith Ng and Jeff Kwok of TH Zipper. “We’ve been very busy, and it seems like visitors have
been looking for everything! We’re offering reflective zippers which got a lot of attention from designers in the outdoor market.
We also got a great response to printed zippers, especially because designers can create their own patterns.
“We’ve seen a lot of new customers here, which is primarily why we do this show,” says Leo Voloshin of Printfresh. “Current
clients, as well, so it’s been great. People are reacting to our Bohemian prints and graphic florals. People love the bright colors
and statements.”
Packaging design and trimming company Reca saw this show as an opportunity to offer a much wider selection at this show.
“We are recognized in the U.S. for our labels and hangtags, but our aim is to serve our clients with a full combination of the
product,” says Reca’s Enrico Diazzi. “We have a unique position in that we can follow from label to packaging and even instore materials. This fair has been great because it’s gotten larger and is a better set-up. We got a lot of interest.”
“I’ve been seeing new customers from Canada, plus some smaller companies from here in New York,” says David Bianchi of
Gipitex. “This show works well for us because our company is comparatively smaller, and we like to work with many different
smaller customers who appreciate the quality we can offer.”
“ We are known for our synthetic blends with a very natural handfeel, so we’re a very niche product,” says Shinichi Kaneda of
Toray. “ People really liked a 100 percent nylon fabric we’re doing that is very light and abrasion resistant and, when made up
into apparel, is very packable. We’re known in performance, but are really moving into fashion with items like our polyester/
Kevlar blend...it’s still performance, but has fashion-appeal. We have an office in New York and exhibit in Paris, but it was still
important for us to be at the New York show.”
Overall the January 2016 edition of Première Vision New York offered amazing energy and innovation to the market, and we
are already looking forward to next July’s program.
