TO USERS OF THIS TRANSPORTATION DIRECTORY
The Western CT. Area Agency on Aging, Inc. (WCAAA) is pleased to
distribute this Directory of Transportation Services for our service area.
Although WCAAA staff and volunteers have spent many hours researching
and confirming specifics concerning the transportation services contained in
this Directory, users are cautioned to call each transportation provider for
temporary changes in service and fee involved if applicable.
Please feel free to call the WCAAA at 203-757-5449 or 800-994-9422 with
corrections and specific comments relative to this Directory, or email your
comments to westernctaaa@sbcglobal.net. Visit our web site for additional
services available through the WCAAA www.wcaaa.org
The WCAAA is very grateful to staff of the CT. Department of Social
Services, Elderly Service Division, for their funding of our Transportation
Conference and the CT. Department of Transportation for their technical
assistance in assessing transportation issues.

The best way to get a conceptual overview of what is available is to look

4
TYPES OF TRANSPORTATION SERVICES OFFERED BY
LOCAL PROVIDERS
Ride services offered by different providers in our area can be categorized
into certain basic classes:
Fixed transit is standard bus service running on a set route and schedule.
You ride and you pay a fare. The fare is reduced if you are elderly or
disabled, but you must pay to ride. All buses in CT are handicapped
accessible.
ADA Para-Transit, which serves those who are disabled, of any age. (Paratransit: Para means alongside. Para transit is service that often augments
regular routes and is furnished in vehicles that are sized between a bus and
a car.)
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires transit agencies to
provide paratransit services to people with disabilities who cannot use the
fixed route bus or rail service (also known as mainline service). In general,
paratransit service must be provided within 3/4 of a mile of a bus route or
rail station, during the same hours and days, for no more than twice the
regular fixed route fare. The ADA further requires that paratransit rides be
provided to all eligible riders if requested any time the previous day, within
an hour of the requested time.
Aides ride for free. Companions do not.
To use this service you must apply and prove you are disabled. Call the local
system for the application form.
Dial-a-Ride Service- This is offered to senior citizens (most often defined
as those 60 or over) and to younger persons with disabilities.
Once someone qualifies and registers for the program, he or she calls a
dispatcher, in advance, and makes a reservation. A vehicle is sent to his/her
person’s home at the appointed time. The person is taken to his/ her
destination and is picked up and brought home at a set time or when his/
her business is done.
Some services limit destinations to medical and dental offices. Others may
give rides to Senior Centers or shopping areas. Some go to anywhere within
the service area.
5
Dial-A-Ride Service Continued
Service is usually door-to-door. There may or may not be a charge,
depending on provider. Most of the time, service is not refused for failure to
pay the fare.
To use the service you apply to local provider and prove age or disability.
Medical Transportation programs- These are variations on the Dial-a-ride
theme. They typically offer non-emergency transport. They are normally for
the patient and a caregiver or family member who accompanies the patient.
Job Links service- www.joblinksct.com, provides rides to employment
located in areas not served by public transit.
This is done by extending existing routes, by creating special routes or by
expanding hours of service. In addition, workers may be provided with gas
cards or be provided funds for car repair or for license, emission or insurance
costs when no public transit is available. The rider does not have to be a
senior or disabled. However, he/ she must be low-income.
A client service request form must be filled out by a job developer, case
manager or placement agency. It is then returned to local Job Links
coordinator. Call your regional transit provider for more information.

INSTRUCTION FOR PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES
ON HOW TO USE MASS TRANSIT
The Kennedy Center, which is a non-profit rehabilitation agency, offers
Travel Training. This is one-on-one instruction for those with cognitive,
sensory, and physical disabilities. The trainer travels along with the client
when he/she uses the transit system and will continue to accompany him
/her on trips until he /she reaches a skill and confidence level that enables
him /her to ride without assistance.
This service is free. It is available throughout most of CT. They do not ask
for proof of disability. They do not do travel training for the blind.
There is likely to be a waiting list for the Kennedy Center program. They
should respond to the client within 2 or 3 weeks. Call 1-800-300-8029 x247.
Board of Education and Services for the Blind (BESB)
This state agency offers Orientation and Mobility Services (Independent
Travel Skills Training). Orientation and Mobility is that part of a rehabilitation
or education program that teaches an individual who is legally blind how to
travel safely and independently. Call 1-800-842-4510
